Why Use a Business Planning Binder

business planning binder

A business planner binder can offer several compelling benefits for individuals or businesses looking to achieve and maintain success. Here are some reasons why using a business planning binder is valuable.

  • Enhanced Organization: A business planning binder provides a structured and organized way to keep all essential documents, plans, and information in one place. Also, this can reduce clutter and the risk of losing critical materials. With designated sections for different aspects of your business, such as goals, finances, marketing, and operations, you can access the information you need when you need it.
  • Increased Productivity: A well-organized binder can streamline your workflow and improve productivity. Instead of wasting time searching for documents or remembering important details, you can refer to your binder for quick reference. Also, this efficiency allows you to focus on more critical tasks and better use your time.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: You can track key performance indicators (KPIs) and other relevant data with a well-organized binder. Also, this data can inform your decision-making process, helping you make informed choices based on real-time information and trends.
  • Accountability: Using a business planning binder encourages responsibility. Also, when you set goals, create plans, and document progress, you hold yourself and your team accountable for achieving the desired outcomes.

Goal Setting and Tracking

Goal setting and tracking are essential components of effective business planning and management. Also, these processes involve defining specific objectives for your business and monitoring progress toward achieving those objectives.

Goal Setting

  • Specific: Goals should be clear and precise. Instead of a vague goal like “increase sales,” a particular purpose would be to “increase monthly sales by 10%.”
  • Measurable: You need a way to measure your progress. Also, in the example above, measuring sales growth as a percentage provides a quantifiable metric.
  • Achievable: Goals should be realistic and attainable. Setting unrealistic goals can lead to frustration and demotivation. So, assess whether you have the resources and capabilities to achieve the goal.
  • Relevant: Goals should align with your business objectives. Also, they should contribute to the growth and success of your company.
  • Time-bound: Set a deadline for achieving the goal. For example, “increase monthly sales by 10% within the next six months.”

Goal Tracking

  • Regular Assessment: It’s crucial to assess your progress toward achieving your goals. Regular check-ins, such as weekly or monthly reviews, help keep your goals at the forefront of your business activities.
  • Data Collection: Collect relevant data and information that pertains to your goals. Also, it might include sales figures, website traffic, customer feedback , or any other metrics that are relevant to the specific plan.
  • Analysis: Analyze the data to determine whether you are on track to meet your objectives. Are you making the expected progress? Are there any trends or patterns that need attention?
  • Change : Based on your analysis, be prepared to adjust your strategies or tactics.
  • Celebrate Milestones: When you achieve milestones or make significant progress towards a goal, celebrate your successes. Recognizing achievements can boost morale and motivation.
  • Communication: Ensure that your team is aware of the goals and their progress. Also, effective communication within the organization is essential for alignment and collaboration.

Team Management and HR

business planning binder

Team management and human resources (HR) are critical to a successful business. Also, effective team management and HR practices are essential for building a skilled and motivated workforce, fostering a positive workplace culture, and ensuring legal compliance.

Team Management

Leadership and supervision.

  • Effective team management starts with solid leadership. Leaders must set clear expectations, provide guidance, and inspire their teams to achieve goals.
  • Supervisors oversee team members’ work, offer support, and resolve conflicts.

Team Building

  • Building a cohesive team involves selecting the right individuals. Also, it fosters collaboration and creates a sense of unity and trust among team members.
  • Team-building activities, training, and regular team meetings can strengthen bonds.

Performance Management

  • Regular performance evaluations help identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement among team members.
  • Constructive feedback and goal setting are essential components of performance management.

Conflict Resolution

  • Conflicts within teams are expected. Also, effective team managers should have conflict-resolution skills to address issues.
  • Encourage open communication to prevent conflicts from escalating.

Human Resources (HR)

Recruitment and hiring.

  • HR handles sourcing, screening, and hiring new employees. Also, it involves crafting job descriptions, conducting interviews, and checking references.
  • Ensuring diversity and inclusivity in hiring is also a key HR concern.

Onboarding and Training

  • HR plays a vital role in onboarding new employees, including introducing them to company policies and culture and providing initial training.
  • HR often manages continuous training and development programs to enhance employee skills.

  • They also work to maintain a positive workplace culture, address concerns, and foster employee engagement.

Choosing the Best Business Planner for Owners and Entrepreneurs

business planning binder

Staying organized and on top of tasks is crucial for success in most people's everyday lives. In the scope of the business world, that sentiment might ring even more true. Whether you're a seasoned business owner or a budding entrepreneur, having a reliable business planner can make all the difference in managing your daily activities and achieving your long-term goals.

There are countless options available in the market, and that makes choosing a planner daunting. The key is to find a business planner that aligns with your unique needs and preferences. In this guide, our planning experts will help you explore the key factors to consider when selecting the best business planner and highlight some top choices.

Learn more about how to use a planner for beginners .

How to Choose the Best Business Planner

The first consideration when choosing a business planner is the size that suits your lifestyle and workspace. For both large and small business owners, a planner that is too large may be cumbersome to carry around, while one that is too small might not offer enough space for detailed planning. While you’re looking for the right planner size , explore all of your options, from compact options perfect for on-the-go entrepreneurs to larger formats for those who prefer a more spacious layout.

Compact Portability: On-the-Go Entrepreneurs

For those constantly on the move, a compact-sized planner is a game-changer. Compact planners are designed to slip easily into a bag or briefcase, ensuring you have your planning companion with you wherever business takes you. This size is the best planner choice for entrepreneurs who need quick access to their schedules, to-do lists, and important notes without the burden of carrying a bulky planner.

An A5 planner or PetitePlanner Organization System may be just right for you.

Classic Dimensions: The Balanced Choice

Classic-sized planners strike a perfect choice for work-life balance, offering enough space for detailed planning while remaining portable. This 7x9 size is ideal for individuals who want a comprehensive planner that can accommodate both broad overviews and specific daily tasks. It provides enough room for creativity and organization without overwhelming your workspace or bag.

Larger Planners: Spacious Planning for Detailed Minds

For those who thrive on detailed planning and prefer a larger canvas, 8.5” x 11” planners provide an expansive layout. These planners offer more room for intricate notes, elaborate to-do lists, and detailed scheduling. The 8.5” x 11” size is the best planner choice for business owners who appreciate the luxury of extra space and find comfort in having a comprehensive overview of their business activities.

The format of a planner plays a crucial role in how effectively it helps you manage your business tasks. Consider whether you prefer a spiral-bound, softbound, ring binder, or digital planner. Fit your planner to your lifestyle and routine. If you are looking for a compact and portable planner you may want to opt for the softbound version. If your planner will be safely living on your desk then you might prefer the ring binder format.

Everyone has a different lifestyle and your best planner should fit into that routine and schedule. Make sure to look at the different formats of these yearly calendars and find your best fit.

The layout of a business planner determines how information is organized on each blank page. For both physical planners and digital planners, a daily planner is ideal for individuals with a high volume of tasks, while a weekly planner layout provides a broader view of the week ahead. Monthly planners are excellent for setting long-term goals and milestones.

The best planners come in various formats, ensuring you find the one that best fits your planning style. Some individuals prefer a structured layout with designated spaces for specific tasks, while others may prefer a more open and customizable design. Planners are known for their thoughtfully designed layouts that balance structure and flexibility, allowing you to tailor the planner to your unique needs.

Explore more planner layouts for work and all areas of your life.

Investing in a high-quality planner ensures durability and longevity, important factors for a tool you'll be using daily. High-quality planners consist of premium materials, sturdy covers, and thick, high-quality paper.

In a world filled with digital planners a well-constructed paper planner not only withstands the wear and tear of daily use but also provides a satisfying tactile experience.

Personalization Options

A personalized productivity planner can add a touch of your personality to your daily routine. Offering a range of customization options, allowing you to choose the cover design, color scheme, and even add your name or a motivational quote. Personalizing your productivity planner can make it feel more like a reflection of your identity, motivating you to use it consistently.

QuickBooks reports section in the binder:

If you use QuickBooks online or desktop, you know about QuickBooks Reports like your “ Profit and Loss Report ” and other reports. Well, this section is where you will place these printed reports. Monthly and quarterly reports are fine in this section. It’s a quick way to see the reports without logging into QuickBooks or turning on your computer. You can also add things like your Balance Sheets quarterly and yearly for reference.

Payroll Summary reports section:

If you have payroll, you will need this section. A payroll company will send you these reports as you generate payroll. You must keep them handy so hole-punching them and putting them in the binder (Affiliate Link) is a good idea. If you want, you can put your payroll reports in another binder (Affiliate Link) to save space.

You can also add a place for your bank and credit card statements..

This section should include all your bank and credit card accounts for the entire year. The best way to include them is to hole-punch them in the binder (Affiliate Link) . They are then in order and easy to access with the newest statement. By doing it this way, you will know that you have reconciled the bank account because you will see it in the binder (Affiliate Link) .

If you run a product-based business, you will have to add additional sections like:

  • The product-based Bookkeeping reports
  • Recently performed Inventory tracking documents
  • Wholesale receipts
  • Cost of Goods Sold Receipts

Another area you can add to the binder is a section for invoices.

If you bill the clients (Affiliate Link) , you will have lots of these receipts. Be sure to include them in the binder (Affiliate Link) . Get more tips about Accounts Receivable in this post.

By the end of the year, all these items will be in one place, fastened to the binder (Affiliate Link) you can bring to your accountant, reducing the amount of time it takes to gather this information.

Now, doesn’t this binder (Affiliate Link) make more sense to do at the beginning of the year so you don’t have to gather it in a mad rush at tax time? I think so.

If you need help creating this small business bookkeeping binder (Affiliate Link) , please contact me . I have been doing solopreneur bookkeeping for over 10 years, and with my office organizing skills, my bookkeeping services include my ability to do paper organizing. Many other bookkeepers do not offer this service.

The best thing about using a business planner

The best thing about using this planner to be organized is that you can have fun and use it in your own creative way.

There are no rules, and no right or wrong way to fill out the business planner printable.

In fact, although there are checkmarks, boxes, and formatting, I encourage you to write or draw outside the lines! I’m a messy writer myself, and my blog philosophy is based on embracing messy handwriting and creative ideas. I’m an artist at heart, so I cannot help but be a rebel!

I created this business planner printable both for those who like to make business plans in an organized fashion, as well as those who are less organized with their writing and creative ideas.

Know that whichever way you express yourself is ok!

How to use the printable business planner

You will find using this planner to be fairly self-explanatory. Basically, all you need to do is start writing in it! And as mentioned, write in it any way you like that works for you.

Planners are awesome to jot down creative ideas and inspiration that you find on Instagram, on YouTube, in nature, and daily life. They are helpful for bloggers, artists, writers, students, moms, and anyone who enjoys writing, being organized, saving their ideas, or keeping notes.

When I plan art ideas for my Etsy shop and blog , I’ll often gather inspiration from other online sources, magazines, out and about when I’m shopping, and more places.

Sometimes I sketch ideas, sometimes I scribble them, and sometimes I list them. Whatever it takes to capture the ideas before they’re gone.

How can a business planner help you succeed in 2024?

There are a couple of ways using a business planner for your creative ideas can help you succeed.

Obviously, a planner exists to help you plan! You can write out your business goals , expenses, product ideas , and more. A plan is the first step in any creative or entrepreneurial venture. Thoughts become words, words become actions!

Manifesting

Writing in a planner not only gives you clarity of thought but can help you successfully manifest your business plans . By writing your business plan, you can discover obstacles or roadblocks. You can closely examine your creative pathway and mindset. And most of all, gain further inspiration and motivation for your entrepreneurial dreams!

Inspired, excited feelings help you take positive action. In that regard, writing in a planner can help you manifest small business success.

Taking action

As I mentioned, outlining an entrepreneurial plan is the first step to taking action for your small business.

Devising a plan helps you see clearly, on paper, what it is you want and need to do step by step, day by day, month by month. Planning not only is an action in itself, but it also helps motivate you to take further actions!

Accountability

Writing in a small business planner helps to keep you accountable to yourself. Plus, you can go back to it months or years from now to see how far you’ve grown. Or to see how you may have changed direction in your business.

Inspiration for entrepreneurs, artists, and creative people

Every single business, small or large, starts with a dream. The dream becomes a plan, then the plan starts to become reality. It takes time. Dedication. Inspiration. And hard work.

The entrepreneurial life isn’t for everyone. Not even for most. Most will give up long before success can catch up with them.

And ya know what else? Life happens, too. Sometimes you hold the entrepreneurial vision for years before it’s finally the right time in your life to take action.

I first started experimenting with artistic entrepreneurial ventures way back in 1999 when I was 18 years old. It took until 2018 to finally know myself and understand I had to find a way to be creatively self-employed . And now, I am. It’s an incredible, deeply fulfilling feeling.

So no matter when you’re getting started, know that you can succeed if your heart is in it for the long run.

You have to keep going.

It’s so kind and shows what a giving soul you are to provide the information you are, but I cannot tell your legitimate downloads from ads and do not want to get malware or anything, thus cannot get the planner. But I got so much useful information, I still wanted to give my gratitude! Bless, with love and light, Mori from OleanderMoonCo. (And I have been doing the 369 manifestation journal for about 6 or 7 months, it does work, like anything, you have to trust the process and believe your vision and intuition.)

Thank you for your kind words! I have just emailed you the PDF directly. You will see it from Kristen and my last name. I’m glad you are finding success with the 369 method. It worked well and fast for me for a specific thing. I need to go back to it soon for more goals!

Thank you so much. God bless you!

Hi!! This has been so helpful with planning my big day!! The only thing I would add would be a section for the luncheon and maybe a section specifically for the contact information for all the vendors and venues, bridal party, photographers, etc. I just kept finding myself flipping through the whole thing over and over again to find the information I needed. And the luncheon information is sometimes completely different from the ceremony and the reception, so it would be awesome if you could add something like that in for future brides!!

Thank you for your feedback! We will let our team know and look into adding this in the future.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! This is amazing Thank you so much!!!

I do have one question, I absolutely LOVE the script font used, what font is it?

You’re welcome! The brush script font is called Selima. It is a good one!

I just saw the reply about attire and such. The wedding planner that my friend made for me had a sheet for bride and bridesmaids attire, groom and groom mens attire, mother and mother in law, flower girl. It had space for budget, actual price, places to buy dresses and suits so on.

Thanks, Kelly. Yes, we didn’t add any specifics to those sections because they are so broad so we thought the notes pages could be used there along with your own clippings from magazines, etc. An attire sheet sounds like a good idea though, I will pass that on for sure.

Are there any pages after attire, beauty, inspiration, day after and honeymoon like the other sections?

I love this!! Thank you!! I’m making a planner for my wonderful friend as a small gift to help her plan and this made it so easy! The only thing that I would request is notes pages that match the theme so you can have extra writing space, and those can be used for the beauty, attire, etc sections that you have cover pages/dividers for but no pages to write/organize/plan for.

Is there a checklist/ page for Attire, the day after and Honeymoon? there are cover pages but I could not find any informational pages like all the other sections. I love this printable planner but I feel as though some pages may be missing

Hi Vanessa,

Unfortunately, we don’t have any pages for those sections at the moment. The cover sheets for those sections were included so that people can add inspiration clippings, custom schedules, etc.

We just found the day after and honeymoon sections are a bit too wedding specific to make any kind of guide for those. We have been thinking about the attire section though and hope to add something for that soon. If you have any suggestions for what you’d like to see for that, please share!

Buying a wedding planner in the store was approximately $40.00. Boy was I glad when I came across this site. The printable pages were beautiful and very organized. I was able to create a beautiful book for my daughter. She will be organized and I know she’s going to LOVE IT!! Thanks so much

Wow, I’ve never found printables or wedding planner that’s so detailed and has exactly what I’m looking for! Plus so cute!! Thank you so much.

I need a printable wedding planner.Thank you in advance.

I please need a free printable planner for our wedding. we are lost when it comes to wedding planning dont know where to take and where to leave.

I think this is an amazing thing to offer as this process is extremely daunting to me. THANK YOU for helping guide the process so I don’t get overwhemled.

I would love to use this to plan for my wedding.

Thank you so much for the free resources! I wasn’t able to find the links for the dividers, and when I click on the cover page, I get an error message.

Thank you so much!!! I look forward to using this to plan my wedding!!!

Thank you so much

I want free printables for wedding planning, I am lost when it comes to wedding planning.

6 Advantages of Business Proposal Binders

There’s no reason to be nervous when giving a business proposal, not if you come prepared to use every trick up your sleeve to win over potential investors. Proposal binders are like the ace in the hole– they may not guarantee victory but they can definitely put the odds in your favor. Consider the many different ways that custom printed binders improve your chances of securing financing for your next big project.

Business Plan/Proposal Binder

Show off your business plan with a proposal binder design.

Show Off Your Brand and Product

The custom design of your binder can help show off your brand and product in a positive light, giving your investors an idea of what they can expect from you. A sharp-looking company logo helps investors to become familiar with your brand and what it stands for, while full-color images give investors their first look at your product. Reinforce your brand and product identity by including additional visual elements throughout your proposal whenever appropriate.

Professional Looks Breed Professional Results

You are only doing a disservice to your fantastic business plan if you present it in a boring, unattractive way. Using a binder makes you look professional and confident-two qualities that are crucial when presenting a business proposal. First impressions go a long way towards sealing the deal and proposal binders help to make your first impression a strong one.

Business Proposal Meeting

Proposal binders help get your point across in a clearly organized way.

Present Information Clearly and Concisely

The most important reason to use proposal binders is the organizational power they provide. Using custom binder dividers with index tabs can break up your proposal into different sections, making it easier for investors to browse for information. Organizing your proposal like this also makes it easier for you to stay on track and hit every point that you want to make. You’ll feel more confident and speak more clearly when all of your goals are spelled out in front of you.

Easier to Follow than a Slideshow

Visuals are important for making any presentation easier for your audience to understand. Proposal binders put these visuals front and center where your audience can see them more clearly. Since every one gets a binder, everyone can get the full impact of your proposal, making it easier for you to make your statement and land the investment.

CD Pocket Proposal Binder

An example of a proposal binder with a CD pocket for multimedia presentations.

Include More Information

Although conciseness is the key to a successful business proposal, you also want to be able to include anything that might win over your investors. Binders with a cd pocket give you the option to go above and beyond by including things like product samples, blueprints, concept renderings and media presentations.

Make Follow-Up Easier

Your proposal binders give investors something to consider long after your presentation has concluded. When it comes time to make a decision, they’re going to remember every bit of important information from your presentation because it’s all neatly outlined in the binder. Add a business card slot so that they can easily reach you when they’ve reached a decision. Last impressions are just as important as the first and binders provide the longest-lasting impression you can hope for.

Your proposal binders can only be successful if they are filled with the right information and have an appropriate design. It’s worth having an extra set of eyes to look at both your binder design and your business proposal to make sure both are working towards your goal of securing financing.

Five reasons your business continuity plan will fail — and how to fix them.

By Michael Berman , Leah Kraus , Jacqueline Pitter and Geoffrey Tritsch

August 28, 2024

university columns

No campus is immune from disaster. Fires, extreme weather and bad actors are everywhere. President Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “In preparing for battle, I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” This also applies to disaster planning. If you are writing or updating your business continuity/disaster recovery plan, avoid these five common mistakes:

Putting technology before people

The IT team has two roles in disaster recovery: restoring IT systems and assisting other departments to resume their institutional-critical work.

IT disaster planning is not only about technology. Students, faculty and staff don’t care about your servers. They care about the applications they need to turn in assignments, conduct their research and do their jobs. Your plan should focus on this result rather than on the technology itself.

In any disaster situation, address the specific issue at hand by enabling your skilled, dedicated people with the information and resources they need. The quickest option for resuming normal operations may look nothing like what was in place before the disaster. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Planning for the event

You can’t plan for every eventuality, especially when disasters are rarely single events. More often than not, a disaster is a series of events that all happen together. Don’t try to write a “cookbook” — a rigid step-by-step approach to addressing disasters. Instead, your plan should provide easy access to the resources, configurations, processes, information, personnel, pre-arranged relationships, outside resources and alternate sites needed for effective response. The key is to research and develop strategies to resolve problems now — not in a time of crisis.

Failing to communicate

Just as a disaster does not occur in a vacuum, neither does disaster recovery. The people affected by the disruption will be rightfully scared, concerned and/or interested. The success of disaster recovery depends on effective communications, which means a different plan for internal and external constituencies.

Insulate those working on disaster recovery efforts from onlookers and those who want to help. Set up a communications team to ensure that external messages are timely, clear, easy to understand and consistent.

Take time before a disaster strikes to think about communications flow:

  • How do you ensure that the essential personnel (on- and off-campus, inside and outside of IT) can all be reached?
  • What if the disruption eliminates your primary communication channel?
  • How will you update concerned users, students, parents and other stakeholders?
  • Can you prepare help desk messages, website splash pages and web banners to ease worries during a crisis?

Be sure to involve your human resources, legal and public relations departments in both planning and response.

Failing to practice is practicing to fail

Just as you wouldn’t expect actors to perform in a play without rehearsal, your plan will need to be assessed and tested regularly. Like any muscle, a plan that isn’t exercised atrophies.

Testing should run the gamut from walking through hypothetical scenarios, to simulations, to announced or unannounced live exercises. Testing will reveal missing critical documentation and areas requiring additional training. Involve everyone who might be needed in a real disaster, including IT staff, public safety, facilities, communications, risk management and even campus leadership.

Don’t be afraid of incremental improvements. Training, and real-world disaster responses, should be used to update the plan. All improvements should be incorporated into the plan. Train on the document and document the training.

Creating a dusty binder instead of a living document

If your sole reason for developing a disaster plan is to satisfy your external auditors, then your plan can sit on a shelf to be dusted off annually. If you want the plan to be useful in an actual emergency , then it needs to be a living document that is routinely updated. Technology, systems, personnel and applications all change. Priorities, procedures, places, people and their relationships all need to be kept current, and that means regular tests, re-evaluations and updates.

You can’t plan for disasters, but avoiding these common mistakes will go a long way in ensuring you have a plan you can really use in an emergency. Keep in mind the words of Jon William Toigo from his excellent book Disaster Recovery Planning:

“Even those who have successfully managed recovery efforts are quick to point out that their recovery strategies failed in as many parts as they succeeded. Almost invariably, they attribute successful recovery to luck, hard work, on-the-spot ingenuity and innovation, and God. While all believe that outcomes would have been very different had no contingency planning been undertaken, to a person they concede that their plans were – and could only be – imperfect.”

Firm to Farm: Estate Planning 101 for Farmers and Ranchers

When you work on your estate plan, rfd-tv’s farm legal and tax expert roger mceowen recommends preparing a vital list of information for whoever will need it..

asset-title-estate-planning-law_adobe-stock.png

When it comes to estate planning , we tend to think of wills, trusts, and powers of attorney. But there are other things you can do before those documents are drafted to make creating those documents easier and smooth the transition upon death.

A good idea is to create a binder that contains your retirement plan information and anything else your children, lawyer, accountant, or executor might need in the event of your passing. Also, ensure all the right people know where to find the binder and have access to it.

What farmers & ranchers should put in their Estate Planning binder:

  • Copies of health and life insurance policies;
  • Burial plot location and funeral instructions;
  • Also, provide your email, computer, phone passwords, bank account information, and data about your debts and bills;
  • Copies of your driver’s license, birth certificate, social security card, and marriage license;
  • Any real estate documents and an exhaustive list of your assets — land you own, stored crops, livestock, and marketing contracts.
  • Copies of crop insurance policies, USDA program contracts, and all your key business relationships.

Collecting this information in advance will be immensely helpful for any additional steps in the estate planning process. It will also likely allow more efficient use of an attorney’s time in drafting the necessary documents for your estate plan.

MoSCoW Prioritization

What is moscow prioritization.

MoSCoW prioritization, also known as the MoSCoW method or MoSCoW analysis, is a popular prioritization technique for managing requirements.

The acronym MoSCoW represents four categories of initiatives: must-have, should-have, could-have, and won’t-have, or will not have right now. Some companies also use the “W” in MoSCoW to mean “wish.”

What is the History of the MoSCoW Method?

Software development expert Dai Clegg created the MoSCoW method while working at Oracle. He designed the framework to help his team prioritize tasks during development work on product releases.

You can find a detailed account of using MoSCoW prioritization in the Dynamic System Development Method (DSDM) handbook . But because MoSCoW can prioritize tasks within any time-boxed project, teams have adapted the method for a broad range of uses.

How Does MoSCoW Prioritization Work?

Before running a MoSCoW analysis, a few things need to happen. First, key stakeholders and the product team need to get aligned on objectives and prioritization factors. Then, all participants must agree on which initiatives to prioritize.

At this point, your team should also discuss how they will settle any disagreements in prioritization. If you can establish how to resolve disputes before they come up, you can help prevent those disagreements from holding up progress.

Finally, you’ll also want to reach a consensus on what percentage of resources you’d like to allocate to each category.

With the groundwork complete, you may begin determining which category is most appropriate for each initiative. But, first, let’s further break down each category in the MoSCoW method.

Start prioritizing your roadmap

Moscow prioritization categories.

Moscow

1. Must-have initiatives

As the name suggests, this category consists of initiatives that are “musts” for your team. They represent non-negotiable needs for the project, product, or release in question. For example, if you’re releasing a healthcare application, a must-have initiative may be security functionalities that help maintain compliance.

The “must-have” category requires the team to complete a mandatory task. If you’re unsure about whether something belongs in this category, ask yourself the following.

moscow-initiatives

If the product won’t work without an initiative, or the release becomes useless without it, the initiative is most likely a “must-have.”

2. Should-have initiatives

Should-have initiatives are just a step below must-haves. They are essential to the product, project, or release, but they are not vital. If left out, the product or project still functions. However, the initiatives may add significant value.

“Should-have” initiatives are different from “must-have” initiatives in that they can get scheduled for a future release without impacting the current one. For example, performance improvements, minor bug fixes, or new functionality may be “should-have” initiatives. Without them, the product still works.

3. Could-have initiatives

Another way of describing “could-have” initiatives is nice-to-haves. “Could-have” initiatives are not necessary to the core function of the product. However, compared with “should-have” initiatives, they have a much smaller impact on the outcome if left out.

So, initiatives placed in the “could-have” category are often the first to be deprioritized if a project in the “should-have” or “must-have” category ends up larger than expected.

4. Will not have (this time)

One benefit of the MoSCoW method is that it places several initiatives in the “will-not-have” category. The category can manage expectations about what the team will not include in a specific release (or another timeframe you’re prioritizing).

Placing initiatives in the “will-not-have” category is one way to help prevent scope creep . If initiatives are in this category, the team knows they are not a priority for this specific time frame.

Some initiatives in the “will-not-have” group will be prioritized in the future, while others are not likely to happen. Some teams decide to differentiate between those by creating a subcategory within this group.

How Can Development Teams Use MoSCoW?

Although Dai Clegg developed the approach to help prioritize tasks around his team’s limited time, the MoSCoW method also works when a development team faces limitations other than time. For example:

Prioritize based on budgetary constraints.

What if a development team’s limiting factor is not a deadline but a tight budget imposed by the company? Working with the product managers, the team can use MoSCoW first to decide on the initiatives that represent must-haves and the should-haves. Then, using the development department’s budget as the guide, the team can figure out which items they can complete.

Prioritize based on the team’s skillsets.

A cross-functional product team might also find itself constrained by the experience and expertise of its developers. If the product roadmap calls for functionality the team does not have the skills to build, this limiting factor will play into scoring those items in their MoSCoW analysis.

Prioritize based on competing needs at the company.

Cross-functional teams can also find themselves constrained by other company priorities. The team wants to make progress on a new product release, but the executive staff has created tight deadlines for further releases in the same timeframe. In this case, the team can use MoSCoW to determine which aspects of their desired release represent must-haves and temporarily backlog everything else.

What Are the Drawbacks of MoSCoW Prioritization?

Although many product and development teams have prioritized MoSCoW, the approach has potential pitfalls. Here are a few examples.

1. An inconsistent scoring process can lead to tasks placed in the wrong categories.

One common criticism against MoSCoW is that it does not include an objective methodology for ranking initiatives against each other. Your team will need to bring this methodology to your analysis. The MoSCoW approach works only to ensure that your team applies a consistent scoring system for all initiatives.

Pro tip: One proven method is weighted scoring, where your team measures each initiative on your backlog against a standard set of cost and benefit criteria. You can use the weighted scoring approach in ProductPlan’s roadmap app .

2. Not including all relevant stakeholders can lead to items placed in the wrong categories.

To know which of your team’s initiatives represent must-haves for your product and which are merely should-haves, you will need as much context as possible.

For example, you might need someone from your sales team to let you know how important (or unimportant) prospective buyers view a proposed new feature.

One pitfall of the MoSCoW method is that you could make poor decisions about where to slot each initiative unless your team receives input from all relevant stakeholders.

3. Team bias for (or against) initiatives can undermine MoSCoW’s effectiveness.

Because MoSCoW does not include an objective scoring method, your team members can fall victim to their own opinions about certain initiatives.

One risk of using MoSCoW prioritization is that a team can mistakenly think MoSCoW itself represents an objective way of measuring the items on their list. They discuss an initiative, agree that it is a “should have,” and move on to the next.

But your team will also need an objective and consistent framework for ranking all initiatives. That is the only way to minimize your team’s biases in favor of items or against them.

When Do You Use the MoSCoW Method for Prioritization?

MoSCoW prioritization is effective for teams that want to include representatives from the whole organization in their process. You can capture a broader perspective by involving participants from various functional departments.

Another reason you may want to use MoSCoW prioritization is it allows your team to determine how much effort goes into each category. Therefore, you can ensure you’re delivering a good variety of initiatives in each release.

What Are Best Practices for Using MoSCoW Prioritization?

If you’re considering giving MoSCoW prioritization a try, here are a few steps to keep in mind. Incorporating these into your process will help your team gain more value from the MoSCoW method.

1. Choose an objective ranking or scoring system.

Remember, MoSCoW helps your team group items into the appropriate buckets—from must-have items down to your longer-term wish list. But MoSCoW itself doesn’t help you determine which item belongs in which category.

You will need a separate ranking methodology. You can choose from many, such as:

  • Weighted scoring
  • Value vs. complexity
  • Buy-a-feature
  • Opportunity scoring

For help finding the best scoring methodology for your team, check out ProductPlan’s article: 7 strategies to choose the best features for your product .

2. Seek input from all key stakeholders.

To make sure you’re placing each initiative into the right bucket—must-have, should-have, could-have, or won’t-have—your team needs context.

At the beginning of your MoSCoW method, your team should consider which stakeholders can provide valuable context and insights. Sales? Customer success? The executive staff? Product managers in another area of your business? Include them in your initiative scoring process if you think they can help you see opportunities or threats your team might miss.

3. Share your MoSCoW process across your organization.

MoSCoW gives your team a tangible way to show your organization prioritizing initiatives for your products or projects.

The method can help you build company-wide consensus for your work, or at least help you show stakeholders why you made the decisions you did.

Communicating your team’s prioritization strategy also helps you set expectations across the business. When they see your methodology for choosing one initiative over another, stakeholders in other departments will understand that your team has thought through and weighed all decisions you’ve made.

If any stakeholders have an issue with one of your decisions, they will understand that they can’t simply complain—they’ll need to present you with evidence to alter your course of action.

Data governance: transforming data into business strategy.

Cory McNeley is the Managing Director of UHY Consulting .

Data is a vital asset for modern organizations, providing insights that drive strategic decision making. And the amount of data created, consumed and stored is only increasing . Without proper management, the information gathered can become unwieldy and unusable, compromising analytics and insights and threatening operational efficiency and business performance.

Here's how businesses can maximize their data’s potential.

The Value Of Data

Data governance is essential for effective data management. It establishes a framework for structuring and organizing information—including how it’s defined, cataloged, stored and accessed—and the rules, policies and processes for handling it. This framework creates a unified reference point for quickly identifying what data is collected, where it comes from and how to access and use it.

Data governance defines the purpose, vision and goals underpinning a company’s data practices and builds trust in the quality and integrity of data to advance strategic objectives. Rather than viewing data governance merely as a set of security and compliance procedures, treating it as an enabler unlocks its power to transform data into business strategy by producing consistently high-quality, trusted information for qualified, fact-based decisions.

Apple phone 16, iphone 16 pro release date schedule: your complete countdown, ukraine strikes power plant near moscow to end war and putin’s rule, the dangers of bad data.

Executives often question the quality of their data when making data-driven decisions. Bad or poor quality is not just incorrect; it is irrelevant, disorganized, inaccessible, duplicative, inconsistent or contradictory. Bad data can stem from a lack of vision, strategy and controls around data management. In organizations that don’t prioritize governance, valuable information is often inaccessible and untrustworthy due to the absence of a unified source of truth. Disorganized and disparate sources across multiple systems and applications trap data in silos, hindering its quality and potential.

Bad data is a significant business liability. It can cause errors and inefficiencies, reducing productivity. Employees waste approximately two hours daily on non-value-added activities, primarily tracking down or validating information. Making important business decisions based on incorrect data or misleading insights can steer an organization down the wrong path, endangering its market share, reputation and consumer trust.

How To Create A Data Governance Plan

When developing your data governance plan, you'll need to define the scope, objectives, stakeholders and risks, as well as determine how the plan aligns with the overall strategic goals of the organization. Building out a robust plan may require months of pre-planning with involvement from a multitude of departments, including executive leadership, IT, legal and the data management teams. Depending on the complexity and structure of your organization, timelines will vary dramatically, but here are a few steps to help you get started.

Define your goal.

The primary purpose of collecting data is to gain intelligence—you want to learn something about the company or its environment to develop strategies and initiatives that improve the business. However, many executives I know admit to not using all their data effectively. Developing data as an asset with a defined purpose and future goals helps clarify the problems a company needs data to solve, such as increasing operational efficiency, reducing costs, driving innovation or enhancing customer experiences. This approach also changes the vision and philosophy around data practices by applying a “customer” lens to understand and meet user needs.

Investing in data as an asset plans for an unknown future by designing an extensible data governance model that can evolve with the business' needs. This allows organizations to scale data operations with a strategy and roadmap for growth and transformation. Purpose-driven data governance provides a centralized, structured approach to embedding data capabilities that maximize data quality and usefulness throughout its lifecycle. It also facilitates continuous improvement with a structure for refining and enhancing data quality and usefulness.

Prioritize high-quality data.

High-quality data is essential for making informed business decisions and developing reliable analytics. Good data is accurate, consistent, complete, timely and relevant. Feeding good data into business models helps organizations identify market trends, customer preferences and innovation opportunities, as well as predict outcomes, solve business challenges and drive performance and profitability.

Data governance builds a system for cultivating high-quality data from the point of creation. It enhances the quality and reliability of business insights derived from data by ensuring only the best, most useful information is presented for analysis through multidimensional collection, categorization and filtering. These factors turn data into business strategy by eradicating bad data and creating consistently high-quality, trusted information organizations can use to navigate complexities and opportunities, improve decision making and foster innovation with confidence and agility.

Educate your team.

For an organization to become truly data-driven, data management must be holistic and centralized, with everyone responsible for understanding and applying best practices. Before expending resources on data governance, companies should understand how data impacts the business, including the value of their existing data, how its volume is predicted to grow over time and how they plan to use it to advance business objectives.

Education is the key. It should be engrained into the foundation principles of the organization starting with the onboarding process. All new employees should understand the importance of data integrity from the day of hire. Continual reinforcement via presentations or town halls can be implemented to ensure the message is being delivered to existing employees. Seek to inform employees about the importance of quality data and the ramifications of poor quality data.

With a tailored strategy and a measured approach, organizations can design a scalable governance program that enables data to evolve in the right direction to deliver continuous value.

Ukrainian president says the push into Russia’s Kursk region is to create a buffer zone there

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday announced plans to create a “buffer zone” in Russia’s Kursk region. “Our primary task in defensive operations overall - to destroy as much Russian war potential as possible and conduct maximum counteroffensive actions,” he said in a nightly address.

The Ukrainian armed forces released footage on Sunday of what is said to show the destruction of a key bridge in Russia’s Kursk region. Ukraine also struck a second bridge nearby, less than two weeks into its stunning cross-border incursion.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday the daring military incursion into Russia’s Kursk region aims to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks by Moscow across the border.

It was the first time Zelenskyy clearly stated the aim of the operation that began Aug. 6. Previously, he had said the operation aimed to protect communities in the bordering Sumy region from constant shelling.

Zelenskyy said “it is now our primary task in defensive operations overall: to destroy as much Russian war potential as possible and conduct maximum counteroffensive actions. This includes creating a buffer zone on the aggressor’s territory -– our operation in the Kursk region,” he said in his nightly address.

This weekend, Ukraine destroyed a key bridge in the region and struck a second one nearby, disrupting supply lines as it pressed the incursion, officials said.

Image

Pro-Kremlin military bloggers acknowledged the destruction of the first bridge on the Seim River near the town of Glushkovo will impede deliveries of supplies to Russian forces repelling Ukraine’s incursion, although Moscow could still use pontoons and smaller bridges. Ukraine’s air force chief, Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleshchuk, on Friday released a video of an airstrike that cut the bridge in two.

Less than two days later, Ukrainian troops hit a second bridge in Russia, according to Oleshchuk and Russian regional Gov. Alexei Smirnov.

As of Sunday morning, there were no officials giving the exact location of the second bridge attack. But Russian Telegram channels claimed that a second bridge over the Seim, in the village of Zvannoe, had been struck.

Image

According to Russia’s Mash news site, the attacks left only one intact bridge in the area. The Associated Press could not immediately verify these claims. If confirmed, the Ukrainian strikes would further complicate Moscow’s attempts to replenish its forces and evacuate civilians.

Glushkovo is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) north of the Ukrainian border, and approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of the main battle zone in Kursk. Zvannoe is located another 8 kilometers (5 miles) to the northwest.

Kyiv previously has said little about the goals of its push into Russia with tanks and other armored vehicles, the largest attack on the country since World War II, which took the Kremlin by surprise and saw scores of villages and hundreds of prisoners fall into Ukrainian hands.

The Ukrainians drove deep into the region in several directions, facing little resistance and sowing chaos and panic as tens of thousands of civilians fled. Ukraine’s Commander in Chief, Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, claimed last week that his forces had advanced across 1,000 square kilometers (390 square miles) of the region, although it was not possible to independently verify what Ukrainian forces effectively control.

Buffer zones sought by both sides

In his remarks on creating a buffer zone, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces “achieved good and much-needed results.”

Analysts say that although Ukraine could try to consolidate its gains inside Russia, it would be risky, given Kyiv’s limited resources, because its own supply lines extending deep into Kursk would be vulnerable.

The incursion has proven Ukraine’s ability to seize the initiative and has boosted its morale, which was sapped by a failed counteroffensive last summer and months of grinding Russian gains in the eastern Donbas region.

For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin said while visiting China in May that Moscow’s offensive that month in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region was aimed at creating a buffer zone there.

That offensive opened a new front and displaced thousands of Ukrainians. The attacks were a response to Ukrainian shelling of Russia’s Belgorod region , Putin said.

“I have said publicly that if it continues, we will be forced to create a security zone, a sanitary zone,” he said. “That’s what we are doing.”

Ukraine’s move into Kursk resembled its lightning operation from September 2022, led by Syrskyi, in which its forces reclaimed control of the northeastern Kharkiv region after taking advantage of Russian manpower shortages and a lack of field fortifications.

Zelenskyy seeks permission to strike deeper into Russia

On Saturday, Zelenskyy urged Kyiv’s allies to lift remaining restrictions on using Western weapons to attack targets deeper in Russia, including in Kursk, saying his troops could deprive Moscow “of any ability to advance and cause destruction” if granted sufficient long-range capabilities.

“It is crucial that our partners remove barriers that hinder us from weakening Russian positions in the way this war demands. … The bravery of our soldiers and the resilience of our combat brigades compensate for the lack of essential decisions from our partners,” Zelenskyy said on the social platform X.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry and pro-Kremlin bloggers alleged U.S.-made HIMARS launchers have been used to destroy bridges on the Seim. These claims could not be independently verified.

Ukraine’s leaders have repeatedly sought authorization for long-range strikes on Russian air bases and other infrastructure used to pummel Ukraine’s energy facilities and other civilian targets, including with retrofitted Soviet-era “glide bombs” attacking Ukraine’s industrial east in recent months.

Moscow also appears to have increased attacks on Kyiv, targeting it Sunday with ballistic missiles for a third time this month, according to the head of the municipal military administration. Serhii Popko said in a Telegram post the “almost identical” August strikes on the capital “most likely used” North Korean-supplied KN-23 missiles.

Another attempt to target Kyiv followed at about 7 a.m. Popko said, this time with Iskander cruise missiles. Ukrainian air defenses struck down all the missiles fired in both attacks on the city, he said.

Fears mount for Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Elsewhere, the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said Saturday the safety situation at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is deteriorating.

International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi urged “maximum restraint from all sides” after an IAEA team at the plant reported an explosive carried by a drone detonated just outside its protected area.

According to Grossi, the impact was “close to the essential water sprinkle ponds” and about 100 meters (100 yards) from the only power line supplying the plant. The IAEA team at the plant has reported intense military activity in the surrounding area in the past week, it said.

Kyiv and Moscow have traded blame for attacks near the power plant since it was captured by Russian forces early in the 2022 invasion, including a fire at the facility last weekend. Grossi said the blaze had caused “considerable damage,” but posed no immediate danger to nuclear safety.

Belarus says it’s deploying more troops on Ukraine border

Russian ally Belarus has massed “nearly a third” of its army along its border with Ukraine, according to authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Lukashenko told Russian state TV that Minsk was responding to the deployment of more than 120,000 Ukrainian troops to the 1,084-kilometer (674 mile) frontier. Belarus’ professional army numbers upward of 60,000.

Ukrainian border force spokesman Andrii Demchenko said Sunday it had not observed any sign of a Belarusian buildup.

Lukashenko, in power for three decades, has relied on Russian support to suppress the biggest protests in Belarus’ post-Soviet history after his 2020 reelection, widely seen as a sham both at home and abroad. He allowed Russian troops to use Belarus’ territory to invade Ukraine and let Moscow deploy some tactical nuclear weapons on its soil.
