Microsoft Teams: How to Hand In Assignments
Microsoft Teams is one of the most popular tools for remote learning. Millions of teachers and students worldwide rely on Teams for hosting or attending online classes and tracking assignments.
Speaking of assignments, if you’re not sure what are the steps to follow to turn in assignments in Microsoft Teams, this guide is for you.
How to Hand In Assignments in Microsoft Teams
- First, go to your classroom.
- Then select the General channel.
- The list of your assignments will appear on the screen. It’s filtered by the due date. In this manner, you’ll know what assignments are urgent and which can wait.
- Select your assignment card . Open it and check the assignment details.
- Hit the Turn in button to submit your assignment. Your teacher can now check your assignment and the files you attached to it.
Keep in mind that the maximum file size is 500MB. You can add up to 10 additional resources for each assignment.
The Assignment Hand-In Status
The status of the Turn in button may vary depending on whether you met the deadline or not.
- Turn in late . This status indicates you’re submitting your assignment after the due date. The good news is that your teacher has allowed late hand-ins. You’re lucky.
- Not turned in . This status is visible if you failed to meet the deadline for handing the assignment in. The bad news is that your teacher hasn’t allowed late turn-ins.
- Undo turn in . Use this button if you need to edit the assignment you already handed in.
- Turn in again . You can use this button to upload the edited version of an assignment you previously submitted.
Make sure to always hand in your assignment on time. Stay organized and try to meet the deadline.

How to Rename the General Channel in Microsoft Teams
For a long time, the General channel has been a default feature in any team created in Microsoft Teams. However, its generic name often led to it being underutilized or even completely ignored. To address this, Microsoft has introduced a new feature that allows users to rename the General channel in existing teams and assign a specific name when creating a new team.
How to Rename the General Channel
If you’re a team owner and want to rename the General channel in an existing team, follow these steps:
- In the list of channels, locate the General channel and click on the … to open the context menu.
Once the channel is renamed, it cannot be changed back to General. Additionally, the associated folder in the SharePoint site collection, where documents shared in the channel are stored, will also be renamed to match the new channel name.
How to Create a Team Without a General Channel
When creating a new team, you now have the option to provide a name for the default channel. As shown in the image below, the form includes a field to name your first channel.
Keep in mind that “General” is now a reserved word in Microsoft Teams, and you cannot create a channel with this name anymore.
With this new feature, your teams can have more meaningful channel names, reducing confusion and increasing productivity. Users will no longer have to deal with an unused General channel, making the overall experience in Microsoft Teams more streamlined and user-friendly.
This is a great improvement that simplifies the way users interact with Microsoft Teams, ensuring that every channel serves a clear purpose.

I have one assignment left over from the previous year that is from an archived team. It has really been bugging me as I am unable to hand it in. I want to hand it in to get rid of it on my assigned assignments page, not so my teacher can see my work. I am unable to contact the teacher as she no longer works in my establishment.
