India is one of the leading countries that is developing cutting-edge technologies. Over the years, India has made incredible strides in technology and has become the third-largest technology startup ecosystem in the world, as stated by the Economic Survey in 2022.

National Technology Day, celebrated on May 11 every year, honours our scientists, engineers, and tech entrepreneurs, who have dedicatedly contributed to the country with their innovations.

On this day, thousands of schools and colleges across the country conduct various programmes and competitions to uplift and motivate the youth in India.

YourStory takes a look at the history and importance of this day.

National Technology Day was first celebrated on May 11, 1999, to honour the talented people in the field of science and technology in India.

The initiative was started by former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to recognise the contribution of Indian scientists and engineers who ensured the successful conduct of the Pokhran tests in May 1998. It was the second time that India conducted nuclear tests, the first having the code-name “Smiling Buddha” in 1974.

However, the US government imposed heavy sanctions on the Government of India back then, but India stood firm and went ahead with the nuclear tests in 1998.

The theme

Every year, National Technology Day has a new theme. The theme for this year’s National Technology Day is “School to Startups-Igniting Young Minds To Innovate”.

This year also marks the 25th National Technology Day, which will be celebrated for two days--from May 11 to May 12.

Significance of National Technology Day

National Technology Day is a significant milestone that was achieved by the government and Indian Army. It is a reminder of India’s latest innovations and breakthroughs in the science and technology sectors.

However, today not only serves to acknowledge the advancements made by fellow scientists, technologists, and engineers but also encourages the next generation to build innovative tools and technologies.

Tech industry growth in 2023

This year is looking bright for India’s tech industry as the sector is predicted to grow by $245 billion in FY2023, according to a NASSCOM report . These statistics alone are proof that India’s take on technology is getting stronger.

When it comes to startup businesses in India, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) also stated in a study that the country had 1,300+ new tech companies in 2022.

Moreover, India ranked 40 on the Global Innovation Index (GII) in 2022, which features countries according to their potential for innovation.

Overall, there is a huge wave of advancements in the field of technology over the past three decades in India, and it is continuing to grow further.

Innovation happens when you take original ideas out for a walk. However, sometimes that’s not enough. It also depends upon whether you’re solving a real-world problem, whom you share your ideas with, and whether you can tinker with them. Increasingly, as fields have become specialized, there is no space for self-taught “lone” innovators like Leonardo Da Vinci. One of Da Vinci’s inventions was the flying machine, inspired by the flight of birds. He also drew detailed images based on his curious and intense observational skills, leading to the invention of parachutes, and helicopters, and our understanding of plate tectonics. All by himself and without formal education, he advanced research in diverse fields such as anatomy, astronomy, civil engineering, and optics.

It is unimaginable that we can have innovators like Da Vinci in the future, but we can try and figure out what can foster innovation amongst school-going children in the modern world. Increasingly, research papers are written jointly by several co-authors as opposed to being authored independently by a single author. For example, in their research, Lukas Kuld and John O’Hagan found that as recently as 1996 single-author papers in top economics journals accounted for 50 percent of all articles, but this had dropped to just over 25 percent twenty years hence. This suggests that to operate at the frontier of research, one must be open to drawing on ideas from others. This can take place by reaching out to those with a different skillset or background, earning their trust, sharing ideas with them and then being open to their ideas. Innovation is most likely to thrive in groups where theorists sit down with experimentalists, artists with scientists, and technologists with humanists. To that end, encouraging students from diverse backgrounds to work together on team-based projects in schools can help trigger innovation.

American industrial research organization Bell Labs prided itself on having co-located cross-functional teams to encourage experimentation. In my own experience of working for six years at Amazon, innovation was most salient where data scientists came together with economists, who sat down with software engineers and product managers, and where teams were allowed to experiment, fail fast, and experiment again. Moreover, disruptive innovation was hampered when employees were working from home. This was observed by Andy Jassy, the current CEO of Amazon, who said publicly that innovation happens while interrupting people during a meeting, getting animated, and working on a whiteboard outside the meeting room. That process could not take place in a virtual work environment.

Finally, thinking about the final customer is easier when you interact with them. This can help bring innovation to existing products as well as give rise to new products that the customer never thought they required. It also helps to sometimes source new ideas from the customers themselves. Applying it to pedagogy, innovation can happen in terms of designing new content for a course. It could also take place in terms of pedagogy. Good teachers experiment and figure out what works for their course and students, but they also seek customer (student) feedback on what’s working and what’s not for their teaching to be effective, engaging, and innovative.

Creativity reflects the ability to produce novel and effective ideas and the ecosystem in which teams interact can influence the rate at which these ideas are produced. A Nature article by Melaine S. Brucks and Jonathan Levav showed that in a field experiment across five countries (Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia), videoconferencing inhibits the production of creative ideas. They show that online meetings hamper idea generation because they focus communicators on a screen, which prompts a narrower cognitive focus. Another Nature review by Benedek et al. argues that creative ideas do not just emerge out of nowhere but typically result from goal-directed memory processes. This suggests that to inspire young minds to innovate we must focus on improving their memory – this can be through better sleep, a balanced diet, and enhanced physical activity.

We should allow children to physically interact and “play” with other children who may be starkly different from them. In other words, working alone and virtually, not being open to ideas from others, not experimenting, and allowing one’s memory to be hijacked by digital feeds will stifle innovation. Children should be encouraged to share their ideas and be receptive to others’ ideas, meanwhile using their memory to juggle these ideas in their brain, carry out experiments, fail, and then learn. And then sleep well. Then we may have our next Da Vinci.a

essay on igniting young minds to innovate

Mylab’s patented NATSpert ID TripleH Detection Kit offers all- in- one qualitative multiplex Real-Time PCR test for simultaneous detection and discrimination of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) such as HIV, HBV and HCV in donated blood. In India, with high prevalence rate of HIV, HBV, and HCV, blood safety is a big challenge. Blood safety relies deeply on the accurate screening of blood for transmissible infections (TTIs). Every year thousands of people in India acquire deadly infections because of lack of appropriate preventive testing.

The Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAT) is considered the gold standard in blood safety screening and significantly reduces TTIs related to Hepatitis B and C and HIV. Some viruses, such as hepatitis B, have a longer incubation period of 40 to 50 days. The serology tests fail to detect the presence whereas NAT will find out such presence. NATSpert, the only made in India approved NAT test, is highly sensitive and is specific real time PCR technology for testing of individual donors and blood products. It can identify and detect multiple analytes in a single test, thus improving workflow turnaround time and sensitivity compared to the currently available commercial NAT kits. It is a high quality, affordable NAT test compare to existing commercially available tests. NATSpert can help blood banks to supply non-infected blood, avoid litigations that come their way due to infected blood stocks and improve their quality standards.

In my 14-year journey within travel technology, I’ve seen its incredible impact. Technology isn’t just changing how we travel, it’s revolutionizing it. Think about biometrics—your fingerprint or face as your passport—making airport check-ins a breeze. But it’s not just about convenience, it’s about making travel safer and smoother for everyone. Working in this field, I’ve learned that technology isn’t just a tool – it’s a game-changer. It’s about finding new ways to solve old problems, like reducing waiting times at airports through data analytics. It’s about making the entire journey, from booking to baggage claim, more efficient and enjoyable. To all the future engineers out there, my message is simple: dream big. The future of travel is in your hands. Embrace your creativity and curiosity. Look for solutions where others see roadblocks. Because, in this ever-changing world, it’s the innovators who will shape tomorrow’s experiences. So, don’t be afraid to push boundaries and think outside the box. The innovations in the travel industry is just beginning, the possibilities are endless.” Saravanan Annadurai, Senior Principal Program Management, Sabre

Ranging from sustainable energy solutions to artificial intelligence applications, the fair highlighted the imaginative and resourceful nature of the upcoming generation of technologists.
