Students who enroll in one of the Anthropology Department’s Ph.D. programs join a vibrant and diverse community of scholars working to extend the disciplinary and interdisciplinary horizons of twenty-first century Anthropology. Students in all Ph.D. programs work closely with their advisers and other faculty to craft an appropriate sequence of graduate-level courses, professional experiences, and independent research culminating in a dissertation. The Department of Anthropology offers only the PhD degree. Prospective students interested in the MA in Archaeological Studies should consult the Council on Archaeological Studies .

Applications are open to become an ISM student

Music program admissions.

In association with the Yale School of Music (YSM), the ISM admits outstanding choral conductors, organists, and singers  interested in pursuing the degrees of Master of Music, Master of Musical Arts, or Doctor of Musical Arts. The application deadline is December 1. Applicants should frequently check the online portal to be certain credentials have been received. Separate, identical applications must be submitted to both the ISM and the YSM. The ISM does not charge an application fee.

Admission Requirements

• Completed online Institute application (for all disciplines except composition; see below). Applicants must also apply separately to the School of Music . The ISM does not charge an application fee. 
• Electronic transcripts of all academic records uploaded into the application. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable, but must include your name, the name of the institution, the degree program, course-work, and your GPA. (If offered a live audition, applicants must submit official transcripts to the School of Music). All transcripts must be in English. 
• Curriculum vitae (a résumé of academic, performance, and employment information). Optional: examples of involvement in liturgical, musical, or artistic activities (orders of worship, prayers, hymn texts or tunes, sermons, special events, etc.).
• Repertory list of major performance areas.
• Audition recording (see recording guidelines below).
• A 5-page writing sample representing your best academic writing and thinking. A portion of a senior thesis or term paper is acceptable. A short essay (500–1,000 words) relating your goals to the mission of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. The essay should discuss your work thus far in sacred music, your vocational goals, and your interest in interdisciplinary study in collaboration with Yale Divinity School students. 
• Three letters of recommendation.
• Scores from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) if English is not your first language (see below for details). TOEFL scores are not accepted. Self-reported scores for your ISM application are acceptable, as long as the official record is in your YSM application.

Prescreening recording guidelines and auditions

An audition recording and live audition is required of music candidates. 

Prescreening Recordings

All applicants should upload audio and video files directly to the application website. Audio quality must be excellent on audio and video recordings. If you are choosing between submitting audio or video files, and your video does not have high audio quality, we prefer that you submit an audio recording.  Choral Conducting applicants must provide a video recording.

Live Auditions

Auditions are held during the last week of February. Exact dates and details will be included with the invitation to audition. For specific information, please refer to the Live Auditions section of the Yale School of Music How to Apply page. 

Language Proficiency Tests

Students for whom English is a second language must demonstrate a level of language proficiency appropriate for study. Applicants to the ISM and Yale School of Music should arrange to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) before December 1 . Yale School of Music and ISM will not extend an offer of admission to any student who has not met our English language requirement before March 1 of that application cycle. International Students

International students are a vital part of our community at the ISM. We welcome international applicants, and seek to offer them support throughout the application process and during their time on campus. In order to gain admission to the Institute and to obtain a visa, international students must show that they have sufficient funds to provide for their expenses while in residence as a student in the United States. Bank affidavits and certificates of finance will be required.

The Institute’s Admissions Committee will consider applications for all degree programs, invite music applicants for auditions and interviews, and then make its recommendations to the appropriate admissions committee of either the School of Music or the Divinity School. 

Letters of acceptance are sent by March 15

Letters of acceptance will be sent to successful candidates on or around March 15. There is no early decision process, nor is there a summer program. Divinity School students must obtain the ISM director’s approval to complete a degree on a part-time basis. School of Music students must be enrolled full-time and in consecutive years.

Resubmitting your application

Students who are not admitted may reapply the following year without resubmitting these materials, although they may send new ones if they choose. All other application materials must be submitted, as for first-time applicants, by the deadline. Letters of recommendation and transcripts will be kept on file for one year.

The Master of Arts (M.A.) program in East Asian Studies is a multidisciplinary program offering a concentrated course of study designed to provide a broad understanding of the people, history, culture, contemporary society, politics, and economy of China, Japan, Korea, or a transnational region within East Asia.

This program is designed for students preparing to go on to the doctorate in one of the disciplines of East Asian studies (e.g., anthropology; economics; history; history of art; language and literature, including comparative literature, film studies, and theater studies; political science; sociology, etc.), as well as for those students seeking a terminal M.A. degree before entering the business world, the media, government service, or a professional school.

The number of students in the M.A. program generally ranges from 15 to 25 students each year. Students come to the program with a variety of experiences, skills, academic preparation and interests. Many have had some experience working or living in East Asia and all are expected to have had substantial language training in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. Each student, working in conjunction with the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) in East Asian Studies, plans an integrated program conforming flexibly to his or her particular needs and goals. The environment is very demanding, as M.A. candidates share classes with Ph.D. candidates with disciplinary specializations. It is also collegial, as Ph.D. and M.A. students interact professionally and socially with faculty, members, and visiting scholars at the Council on East Asian Studies and the larger University community.

Joint-Degree Program

CEAS offers joint-degree programs with three of Yale’s professional schools—Environment, Law, and Public Health—that offer a strong connection between two demanding courses of study while also fulfilling the requirements of each separate school. Only students enrolled in the two-year track of the East Asian Studies M.A. degree program are eligible for a joint degree. More information is available here .

The Council of East Asian Studies at Yale University does NOT offer a Ph.D. program. Some students will use the East Asian Studies Master’s Program as a stepping stone to a Ph.D. program. Usually, this path is chosen when the student aspires toward a Doctorate, but lacks language or foundational coursework or is not certain of the field through which to pursue it. The broad-based nature of the East Asian Studies M.A. program allows the student opportunities to explore before deciding on a specific field or to bolster their qualifications for pursuing a Doctorate.  Comprehensive information on all departments and programs is available at the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences .

Yale Quantum Institute

Opportunity: $1,500 grant to develop yale stem course with yale art gallery artworks.

Through a partnership between the Yale University Art Gallery and Yale’s Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning and with the support of the Provost’s Office, Yale Instructors (Faculty, Lecturers, Postdoctoral Associates/Fellow, Graduate students TAs) in STEM fields are invited to apply for curriculum development grants of $1,500 (awarded as research funds) to develop at least one Gallery-based curricular session which focuses on cultivating advanced critical observational skills (the ability to recognize, analyze and interpret the complex ways in which images convey meaning) or other skills or topics related to the faculty member’s teaching practice or discipline.

The goal of the grant program is to introduce instructors to the museum as a unique, multidisciplinary learning environment and equip them with visual-analytical tools and innovative pedagogies to apply in their own teaching and research. To this end, grant recipients will be required to:

1) attend a two-hour pedagogy workshop at the Gallery in October 2024 (date TBD)

2) to develop in consultation with Gallery staff a one-page lesson plan that is both specific to the Gallery visit (including a small selection of art works and activities/questions for in-gallery engagement and discussion) and can be applied more broadly (emphasizing the development of disciplinary skills or habits of mind such as critical observation skills, pattern recognition, emotional recognition, and empathy) across courses and can be utilized by other faculty

3) based on the developed lesson plan, lead on their own a museum session for a course they are offering in the 2024–25 academic year

Grant recipients will have the option to request an observation with feedback of their museum session.

The Yale Department of Physics welcomes applications to our matriculating graduate class of 2024 beginning around August 15th, 2024. The General GRE and Physics GRE scores are Optional for applications received by the December 15, 2023, submission deadline.

We recognize the continuing disruption caused by COVID-19 and that the hardship of taking GREs falls unequally on individual students. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment for all; therefore, we do not require these standardized tests for admission to our program. All applications are reviewed holistically, and preference will not be given to students who do or do not submit GRE scores.

Admissions: Applying to the MD-PhD Program

We seek applicants who are committed to pursuing a career as a physician-scientists. We value students who are curious, creative, compassionate, and resilient, and bring a diverse range of personal experiences, viewpoints, and academic interests to our collaborative and innovative community.

Candidates must submit their application to the Yale School of Medicine which includes the AMCAS and the Yale Secondary Applications and indicate their interest in being considered for the MD-PhD Program. All applications are holistically reviewed to find candidates whose academic and personal experiences indicate exceptional potential and a commitment to pursue MD and PhD training at Yale. Among the things we look for in a candidate's application are:

• Significant research experience(s) with evidence of increasing independence, responsibility, and depth of contributions
• Outstanding letters of recommendation, including those from research mentors who can reflect upon your potential for success as a physician-scientist
• Personal statements that allow us to understand your reasons for training as a physician-scientist
• Activities that reflect your curiosity, compassion, maturity, leadership, grit
• Broad academic excellence, not reflected solely in MCAT scores or GPA

Admissions Timeline

Invitations for interview will be sent via email from September to January. All interviews are virtual and will be scheduled over a two-day period. Candidates have interviews with members of both the MD and MD-PhD Interviewing subcommittees, non-evaluative meetings with MD-PhD program faculty and students, and informational sessions with the program director and current students. Social events and student buddies will help you learn more about the MD-PhD community at Yale and about living in New Haven. As part of the invitation to interview, we will provide a survey link that allows you to request informal meetings with up to five Yale faculty whose research is of interest to you. These informal discussions are not part of the admissions evaluation but are made available to you so that you can get a more complete picture of what Yale has to offer. Applicants who are not invited to interview for the MD-PhD Program will be offered the option to have their application considered for MD-only admission.

Special Instructions for Applicants Interested in “non-traditional” PhD programs

MD-PhD applicants who plan to pursue their PhD in Anthropology, Economics, History of Science & Medicine, Philosophy, Religious Studies or Sociology must submit applications to both the MD-PhD program and to the PhD program. (A link to the PhD program application will be sent to such students when their complete MD-PhD program application is received.) Interview invitations will be made after both applications have been reviewed. Materials required to support the PhD program application are detailed below. Students interested in these programs are encouraged to contact the MD-PhD program to indicate their interest and to obtain the most up-to-date information about specific PhD program requirements. Please note: the completed MD-PhD application must be received by October 15th and the PhD application completed by November 1st to allow full review and consideration for interview.

Important information to keep in mind:

• The " personal statement of academic purpose " is carefully evaluated by PhD program faculty; when requested, it should be prepared with this audience in mind. This document should be a succinct statement of 500-1,000 words explaining why you are applying to Yale for graduate study, describing your past research, your preparation for the intended field of study, your academic plans for graduate study at Yale (e.g. your proposed research project), and your subsequent career objectives. Explain how the faculty, research, and resources at Yale would contribute to your future goals.
• You may submit a letter of recommendation from the same individual as part of both the AMCAS and GSAS applications; we encourage you to ask the recommenders most capable of speaking to your preparation for the PhD program of study to submit their letters to both AMCAS and GSAS. Once you identify a recommender in the GSAS Admissions Portal, they will receive an email providing instructions and access information.
• No application fee to GSAS will be required to submit these additional materials.
• The MCAT will be accepted in lieu of the GRE except for candidates to Economics.

Gap years are not necessary for applicants . Nationally, >75% of MD-PhD students have taken at least one gap year after college 1 . Gap years can help applicants gain research or clinical experience necessary for deciding whether dual-degree training is right for them. Or they can provide time to travel, work, or take the MCAT and apply. But gap years per se are not necessary to be admitted to MD-PhD programs! The distribution of gap years taken by Yale MD-PhD applicants, interviewed or accepted candidates, and matriculated students for 2019-2023 shows a median “gap” of 2 years for interviewed, accepted, and matriculated applicants But 18% of our current students joined the program immediately after graduating from college.

Admission to our graduate programs is open to students with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree or its equivalent in any field of engineering or in related areas (physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and materials science). Deadlines for submitting your application:  

Doctoral and Master’s Program: December 15. Enrollment to begin in the fall (there is no spring term admission). Look for application instructions at the Yale Graduate School website (Please note: Applications are accepted online only)

Non-Degree program (DSR):   Applications currently accepted on a continuous basis. Applications must be submitted no later than 90 days prior to your intended start date.

GRE General scores are optional for applicants to Chemical & Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Personalized Medicine and Applied Engineering. GRE General scores are optional for applicants to the Ph.D. program in Biomedical Engineering but are required for applicants to the M.S. program in Biomedical Engineering. When registering to take the GRE, please use institution code 3987. It is not necessary to include a departmental code. GRE General scores are not accepted for applicants to Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science.

Applicants whose native language is not English and whose undergraduate studies were done at a university where the language of instruction was other than English must provide the results of their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Application Timeline & Process

The timetable outlined below is a guide to assist students who plan to apply for academic Master’s degree and Ph.D programs. Because of the range of programs and requirements, the information below is a general framework. The process typically begins in the first semester of junior year, or two years prior to application. Students should plan on submitting application materials by the end of first semester senior year, or approximately eight months prior to matriculation.

The graduate school application process, also outlined below, is similar to the process you used when applying to undergraduate colleges; there are materials to gather and deadlines to meet. Many students find it helpful to compile a spreadsheet to help them stay organized and avoid missing important deadlines. Early decisions and rolling admissions policies are common, even if not explicitly stated. There are additional featured articles at the bottom of this page that can help you with some of these components.

Application Timeline

Junior year or one year prior to matriculating, september – december.

• Schedule an appointment with a Office of Career Strategy advisor.
• Meet with faculty and your Director of Undergraduate Studies to discuss potential programs and letters of recommendation.
• Begin to prepare for the GRE.
• Research and develop list of target programs.

January – May

• Refine list of target programs.
• Register and sit for the GRE .
• Ask for letters of recommendation.

June – August

• Draft personal statements.
• Finalize list of target programs, noting application deadlines (most will begin in November).

Senior Year or One Year Prior to Matriculating

• Request letters of recommendation from faculty.
• Finalize your personal statements and have them edited by a writing tutor and other readers.
• Contact the Office of the Registrar to request transcripts be sent to target programs.
• Begin submitting applications. Confirm with programs that your application file is complete, including letters of recommendation.
• Begin exploring sources of financial aid (federal, institutional and private) and obtain and file applications as soon as possible.
• Obtain a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and file well before the deadline.
• Have your fall semester transcripts sent to target programs.

February – April

• Evaluate Letters of acceptance and offers of financial aid.

Application Process

Standardized tests.

Standardized tests are used in combination with your other application materials to gauge your preparation for graduate-level work. Tests may be general or subject specific depending on the subject and program requirements. Determine which, if any, standardized tests you need to take and gather information on how often the test is offered, testing locations, and cost. For GRE details and registration information, please visit the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website .

Additional considerations for Students with Disabilities who are thinking about applying to graduate or professional schools include identifying which exams are needed, how far in advance exam accommodations must be requested, and which documentations regarding your disability will likely be needed for exam accommodations.

Personal Statements

Preparing a well-written and effective personal statement (sometimes referred to as statements of purpose or personal essays) that clearly articulates your preparation, goals, and motivation for pursuing that specific graduate degree is critically important. You will need to spend a considerable amount of time and effort crafting these statements. For individual assistance with writing your personal statement, consult with the writing tutor in your residential college  or the Writing Center within the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning .

Letters of Recommendation

Graduate programs will commonly require 2-3 letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation allow an admissions committee to understand your strengths, weaknesses, and potential from another person’s perspective. You can find more information in our Soliciting Letters of Recommendation Blog .

Application Forms

Program application forms are typically available on the program web site; you can also call the program to request application materials. Pay special attention to any directions given and complete application forms exactly as instructed. Do not simply refer the recipient to your resume; answer all questions completely and thoroughly.

Transcripts:  Graduate schools usually require that you submit official transcripts from all institutions of higher education as part of your application. You can request your Yale College transcript online through the Student Information System (SIS) or by contacting the Office of the Registrar . If you completed courses at another college or university or studied abroad, you will need to contact those schools directly to request official transcripts. For courses taken abroad, you may be required to get a translation of your transcripts if it is in another language.  

Resumes and CVs:  Graduate programs often require applicants to provide a resume or CV (curriculum vitae). The OCS website provides resume samples and a CV worksheet  that you can use as a guide when developing your document. Before submitting your resume or CV, you should have it reviewed by a OCS Career Advisor or Graduate Peer Advisor to assure it is free of errors and is effectively conveying your skills, background, and experiences.

Writing Samples and Creative Portfolios:  Depending on your discipline, you may also need to submit writing samples appropriate to your intended area of specialization, such as poetry, fiction, or journalism. For those pursuing advanced degrees in performing or visual arts, you may also need to submit a portfolio of your work or audition tapes. Review the specific requirements for the programs you’re considering and speak with your faculty advisor or OCS Career Advisor, Derek Webster , to discuss your needs.

Interviewing:  A graduate school interview should be approached in the same manner as a job interview. Preparation and practice are essential. Be ready to discuss your academic preparation and motivations for seeking a graduate degree, your specific areas of interest within the field of study, and your goals following your degree completion. Also, be prepared to discuss any internships, fieldwork, research, or clinical experiences and the impact they had on you. After the interview, don’t forget to send thank you notes.

How to Apply to the Doctoral Program

The research conducted by YSE PhD candidates spans global and disciplinary boundaries — and what’s more, it is fully funded. Doctoral Program Application Deadline

The application deadline for admission to the fall class in a given year is typically the preceding January 2 of that year.

Applications are submitted through the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) website .

Before You Apply

All applicants must identify and contact one or two faculty members who they think could serve as their major advisor. Applicants will not be accepted unless a faculty member in the Yale School of the Environment (YSE) agrees to become their mentor. We do not do lab rotations. Once an applicant is admitted they immediately work with the chosen advisor.

• Applicants should begin contacting prospective faculty advisors between late September and late October to discuss their research interests and determine if they and the prospective faculty member are a good match.  This initial contact is normally done by email.
• As part of that initial contact, applicants should explain in writing what research questions they would like to pursue during their doctoral studies, what kind research experience and expertise they already have gained, and why they wish to work with the prospective faculty member.  Applicants should provide a CV at that time they initiate contact.
• Applicants are also encouraged to contact current students and alumni from their potential advisor’s research group for more information about working with their advisor, the doctoral program, and life in New Haven.

Application Elements

The PhD application has several elements:

• Biographical information ,
• Transcripts of course work and proof of degrees,
• Test scores (e.g., GRE, and English language proficiency test (TOEFFL, IELTS) as appropriate). NOTE: The GRE is optional. Applicants should check with their prospective advisors whether or not they wish to see the scores.
• A CV describing research and professional experience and a list of any scholarly work,
• A personal statement describing the goals for graduate study including the dissertation research topic as well as professional aspirations beyond the PhD. (Note: The goal of the YSE doctoral program is to train students to pursue post PhD positions that align with their professional goals and aspirations. These may include academic or non-academic [public or private sector] careers.) 
• Three letters of reference that can describe the applicant’s character, abilities and professionalism, and attest to the applicant’s scholarly aptitude and future potential.  Ideally, at least two of the three letters should come from academic advisors or research mentors.
• Applicant may provide a writing sample (e.g. a pdf reprint of a publication) but this is not required.

All elements of the application will be given equal consideration in the decision-making; there are no cut-off’s for test scores.

How to Apply for Combined PhD Programs

Application Fee and Fee Waivers

The application fee for all degree-seeking applicants is $105.00. The fee must be paid, or a fee waiver must be granted, before an application will be reviewed. Application fees are non-refundable. Some applicants may be eligible for a fee waiver; U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and non-U.S. citizens are all eligible to request a fee waiver. Fee waivers may be granted on the basis of:

• Participation in a special program, event, fellowship, or status.
• Documented financial hardship

Application Review Process

Once the application is submitted to the Yale Graduate School it is forwarded to the doctoral program in the School of the Environment (YSE). This normally happens in the middle of January, at which time the doctoral admissions committee engages in the review of the applications.  

• Applications are reviewed by the doctoral admissions committee which is comprised of seven members of the YSE faculty that represent the breadth of the scholarly disciplines within YSE.
• Applicants are ranked for admissibility by the admissions committee.
• The top ranked applicants are invited to an open house, which takes place sometime in early February, at which time applicants have a chance to meet and engage with students and faculty in YSE.
• Following the open house, the admissions committee will decide which applicants will be recommended for admission to the doctoral program in the School of the Environment.
• The YSE doctoral committee recommendations will be sent to the Graduate School for final approval.  

Admission into the Program and Funding Information

Students approved for admission to YSE will be sent a formal letter of offer of admission from the Dean of the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. This normally happens in late February. The letter will explain: the terms and expectations of doctoral studies within the YSE, which includes a guarantee of 5 years of stipend funding, health care coverage and a waiver of tuition and an explanation of teaching expectations. 

Doctoral students at YSE receive 5 years of guaranteed funding. Funding packages consist of a stipend ($32,700 for the 2020-2021 academic year), full tuition coverage, and health insurance. Completed applications should be received at Yale by Dec. 1st. A record of your academic performance (“unofficial transcript”) is required and should be “uploaded” to your on-line application. An official grade transcript is neither required nor necessary for the review of your application. Students must submit three letters of recommendation and are encouraged to submit samples of their research work. Providing scores on the GRE Aptitude Test is optional, as are scores on the GRE Psychology Subject Test.  It is especially advisable to begin the application process early. A common problem in reviewing applications is that some are incomplete in some respect at the time the review begins and are therefore temporarily set aside. If these applications remain incomplete, they may never be reviewed by the departmental admissions committee. Accordingly, it is important to allow sufficient time for the independent information (transcripts, letters) to arrive at Yale in time to be processed. 

Applicants should indicate primary faculty members in the department with whom they would be interested in working in their applications.  Because of the emphasis on close contact with faculty members in research, as well as effective student participation in small class groups, only about fifteen new students out of about seven hundred applicants can be admitted each year. Applicants should realize that the total number of applicants is many times larger than the number that can be admitted, and, further, individual feedback on applications is not possible. A fine academic record, evidence of research experience and potential are weighed together in the admission decision process.

Official score reports must be submitted for all required examinations. Ask the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to report your scores to the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, code 3987.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  The General Test is required of all applicants. Applicants should take the GRE no later than November. Applicants are strongly encouraged to register early to schedule test dates and times. For registration forms, test dates, test centers, and general information contact  www.gre.org(link is external) . 

Test of English as a Foreign Language.  The TOEFL is required of all applicants whose native language is not English.  This requirement is waived only for applicants who have received a baccalaureate degree, or its foreign equivalent, prior to matriculation at Yale, from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction. NOTE:  1 or 2 year MA degree does not qualify for the waiver.  If you do not qualify for a waiver but have taken the TOEFL within the last two years you will need to have your TOEFL scores released to us (code 3987). If your scores can no longer be released, you will need to take the test. The test should be taken as early as possible to ensure that your scores are received in time to be incorporated in your file.  Normally TOEFL scores will not be released if they are older than two years. If you took the TOEFL before and ETS will release those scores then you should no have to retake the examination.

International English Language Test System (IELTS).  You may substitute IELTS for TOEFL.

Test of Spoken English (TSE).  All international applicants who accept offers of admission to the Ph.D. program and whose native language is not English are strongly encouraged to present scores on the Test of Spoken English by the time of enrollment in the fall. The TSE is administered in the United States and abroad. For further information check the  www.toefl.org(link is external)  web site. Students who do not demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English may be retested and/or asked to take courses in English for speakers of other languages. A high level of proficiency is required for students to serve as teaching fellows.

Doctoral and master’s degrees. Students may enter the Graduate Economics Program after earning a bachelors degree (or the equivalent) or a master’s degree. The Master of Philosophy is awarded to students who complete all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation. The Doctor of Philosophy is awarded upon acceptance of the doctoral dissertation. The Economics Department does not accept students into a terminal master’s program. The Economic Growth Center offers a one-year MA program in International and Development Economics.

Full-time and Part-time Study.  Doctoral students are expected to devote their full energies to course work and preparation for the qualifying examinations in the first years, and dissertation research and writing in the final years of graduate study. There is no part-time study available to applicants to the Department of Economics.

Nondegree Study.  Qualified individuals who wish to study at the graduate level but not pursue a degree may be admitted to the Division of Special Registration (DSR) as “special students.” Admission to this program is for one term or one year only and carries with it no commitment for further study. These students are not eligible for financial aid or loans. Applicants interested should apply in the same fashion as for full-time study.

Interdisciplinary Study.  Students may apply for admission to only one department or program within the Graduate School per year. Students may take one or more courses in a related department, and are often advised by faculty members from more than one department during their dissertation research. Students in the Graduate School, may, with permission, take advantage of course or research opportunities in Yale College and in the professional schools.

Joint-degree Programs.  The Department of Economics offers a joint J.D./Ph.D. degree with the Yale Law School. Students must apply to and be admitted to the Yale Law School independently of the Graduate School. Applicants may apply to both schools at the same time or they may enter one school and apply to the second during their first year of study. A separate application is required for each school, and each makes its own admission decision. Students who apply simultaneously to two schools should indicate that they are doing so on both applications. Transfer Students.  The Yale Graduate School does not admit transfer students. The presumption is that students who receive a Yale doctoral degree do their studies at Yale. Students currently enrolled in a doctoral program elsewhere who wish to apply to a Yale doctoral program may do so through the normal admissions procedure. They must meet all the application requirements, including the deadline for submission. Some very successful students have entered the Yale program in this way. Such students may petition the Economics Department and Graduate School to waive a portion of the Ph.D. course requirement (normally a maximum of three courses) in recognition of previous graduate-level work done at Yale or elsewhere. All other requirements, including the comprehensive examination, the economic history requirement, the oral examination, and the econometrics paper, must be completed at Yale. Students who enter the program from another doctoral program receive the full six-year financial aid package.

Those interested in transferring to Yale might consider the Exchange Scholars Program as an alternative. At participating institutions, students may petition their own schools to enroll full-time at Yale for a term or for an academic year as exchange scholars. Participating universities include Berkeley, Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, MIT, Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Stanford.

Further Graduate School Information.  A comprehensive description of academic rules and regulations of the Yale Graduate School will be made available to students when they are registered. The Programs and Policies booklet may be found on the Internet at the  Graduate School  website.

Length of Study.  Students are expected to complete the requirements for the degree in six years of registration. The first two years are generally spent taking courses full time; the third is spent preparing a dissertation prospectus within workshops and completing all requirements except the dissertation; the remaining years are spent pursuing and writing up a work of original research. The average length of time required to complete the program is five years. A small percentage finish in four years, although students are guaranteed registration for 6 years in which to finish their degree.

Residency Requirement.  Doctoral students in this program are required to be in residence in New Haven for at least three years.

Dissertation.  The doctoral dissertation is the climax of the graduate school experience. Every dissertation makes an original contribution to a student’s field of study by discovering significant new information, achieving a new synthesis of ideas, developing new methods or hypotheses, or applying established methods to new materials. A dissertation also demonstrates the student’s mastery of relevant resources and methods. Students work with two advisers throughout this process.

In the academic year 2023-24 tuition for full-time study is $48,300. This rate is expected to increase in subsequent years. Ph.D. candidates are charged four years of full tuition. Thereafter students are charged a modest continuing registration fee each term until the dissertation is submitted or the terminal date is passed.  For the 2023-24 academic year this fee is $790 per semester.

The Graduate School provides full tuition, health insurance and stipend fellowship for the first six years of study. Normally the Department of Economics provides additional stipend support. There is a combined award policy that applies to students who obtain outside fellowships. This policy gives students a financial incentive to obtain outside awards.

Teaching Fellowships.  Because the faculty considers teaching to be essential to the professional teaching of all doctoral students, they serve as teaching assistants in the third and fourth years of study.

Research Fellowships.  Department faculty often hire students as research assistants either part-time or full-time.  During this academic year there are seven students supported as full-time research assistants where this funding replaces the need to serve as a teaching fellow.  In the summer of 2020, twenty-five students were supported as part-time research assistants for faculty. 

Outside Fellowships.  All applicants for admission are strongly urged to compete for outside fellowships which can be used at Yale. These fellowships are sponsored by both public and private agencies and are often more generous than those awarded by the University. In addition to their financial advantages, distinction is conferred on a student who wins an award. The  McDougal Graduate School Center  maintains a library of fellowship information; incoming students seeking external aid are advised to consult it on arrival in New Haven.

Federal and Non-Federal Student Loans.  Loans administered by the University are available to citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. The types of loans and amounts a student is eligible to borrow are based entirely on financial need as determined by federal formula.

Doctor of Philosophy

The primary mission of the PhD program is to provide scholars with the disciplinary background and skills required to contribute to the development of our understanding of better ways of measuring, maintaining, and improving the public’s health. Examples of research conducted by PhD students includes but is not limited to: cancer epidemiology, clinical trials, cardiovascular disease, molecular epidemiology, vector-borne diseases, parasitology, mental health epidemiology and HIV/AIDS. Students are encouraged to work with faculty throughout the university since much of the work done in EPH is interdisciplinary.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences .

Select program: "Public Health" and your Concentration: Biostatistics (PhD or MS), Chronic Disease Epidemiology (PhD or MS), Environmental Health Sciences (PhD), Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases (PhD) or Epidemiology Infectious Disease (MS), Health Informatics (MS) Health Policy and Management (PhD) or Social and Behavioral Sciences (PhD).

The GRE and TOEFL code for Yale GSAS is: 3987. A writing sample is not required.

The deadline is December 15th.

PhD Program

All PhD students are guaranteed five years of 12-month stipend and tuition support in the form of YSPH fellowships, teaching fellowships, traineeships and research assistantships. In addition to support for tuition and living costs, students receive a health award to covers the full cost of single-student Yale Health Plan Hospitalization/Specialty Coverage.

Faculty Advisors

PhD applicants are not required to secure a faculty mentor prior to applying to the program.

We expect applicants to provide information in their personal statement about the research they hope to conduct if admitted and to state the faculty in our department whose research aligns with their interests.

Diversity Research Awards

The PhD program in Public Health enhances commitment its PhD students who identify as underrepresented minority students, first-generation college graduates and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds by offering research awards to the top candidates admitted to the program. Each year a minimum of two PhD admitted students will be offered $2,000 each for research funds in addition to their financial aid package. Recipients have up to 2 years to spend these funds, which can be used for books, computers, software, conference travel, research travel or research supplies.

This funding is offered upon acceptance into the program. The criteria for the award is:

• Previous involvement in diversity-related initiatives in their community and/or volunteer activities helping underserved populations.
• Research interest in serving an underserved population

Department of Political Science

Application Information

This page is divided into information about Degrees, Procedures, and Frequently Asked Questions.

The department accepts applications only for full time study for the Ph.D. in Political Science. We do not offer a Master’s (M.A.) program or part-time study. More information about the Ph.D. program, including program requirements, is available here. All admitted students receive five full years of funding (with a possibility of a sixth), including tuition, health insurance, and a generous stipend.

A joint Ph.D. degree is available with  African American Studies , Statistics and Data Science , the  Yale Law School , or the  School of Management .  Students applying for a joint degree program must apply to and be accepted by both programs independently. Consult the Yale Graduate School’s Requirements for Joint Degree Programs for further information.

Students interested in pursuing quantitative political science research in American politics should consider the pre-doctoral fellows program from the Center for the Study of American Politics (see  here ).

The application deadline for admission in Fall 2025 is December 15, 2024. 

Late applications are not accepted. Applicants will be informed of the results of the application process by mid–March 2025.

Please note that ALL applicants for the Ph.D. in Political Science are required to submit GRE General Exam test scores, a writing sample, a personal statement, transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation.

Students are also required to select a primary subfield of study among our eight fields (American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political economy, or political theory, quantitative empirical methods, qualitative and archival methods, and formal theory).

Additionally, the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Test System) is required of all applicants whose native language is not English .

This requirement is waived only for applicants who will have received a baccalaureate degree, or its foreign equivalent, prior to matriculation at Yale, from a university or college where English is the primary language of instruction.

The application is an online process—all policies, procedures, instructions and answers to frequently asked application questions, as well as access to the application, can be found at Yale Graduate School of Arts & Sciences .

We encourage applicants, in their personal statement, to do the following succinctly (in no more than 1000 words): (1) discuss their motivation for conducting research, (2) provide a detailed summary of their research experience and training and how it prepares them for doctoral study in their proposed program (the standalone PhD in Political Science or the combined degree, if applicable), (3) the topic(s) they plan to study in graduate school and how they would approach those questions, and (4) why Yale is a good fit given their interests.

Learn about the program: its faculty, course offerings, and resources. Read the faculty's research publications to see who you might want to work with at Yale.

Verify the application deadline for your program.

All new students enroll in the fall, and the admissions process begins nearly a year in advance of matriculation.

Determine what standardized tests you need to take. Register early.

Some PhD and Master’s degree programs require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. In addition, applicants whose native language is not English may need to take an English Language test (TOEFL or IELTS).

Finalize your application.

Be sure to complete and submit the application before your program's application deadline.

• Doctoral Programs

Application for admission to the Doctoral Program in Management is made through the Yale Graduate School. The application deadline is December 15 of the year in which admission is sought.

Applications

Applications are considered only once per year, and all new students begin their doctoral studies in the fall term. Classes are not offered on evenings or weekends, nor is it possible to be a student in the program while holding a full-time job. Applicants are required to take either the GRE or GMAT test. You will find a full description of the application process on the Graduate Admissions Web Page.

Financial aid

All students admitted to the program are given full financial aid for five years as long as they continue to satisfy the program's academic requirements. The aid consists of a tuition waiver and a stipend that is comparable to stipends offered by other leading schools of management.
