Telemedicine physicians are among the highest-paid earners in the remote work model, with ... [+] eyewatering salaries reaching as high as nearly half a million

Is high-paying remote work really declining in 2024?

Contrary to popular opinion, the job board, Indeed.com, believes this is not the case. In its recent analysis of remote jobs from its Remote Job Tracker , Indeed noted that the share of job postings that advertize remote and/or hybrid work is actually leveling off at close to 8%, which is about three times higher than the share of remote job availability in 2019, despite the efforts of some employers to urge and mandate workers to RTO (return to office).

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, how to find these high-paying remote jobs.

So, what steps can you take to find these remote jobs?

According to Indeed career advisors, they suggest you take following steps:

  • Research your industry: Some industries they note, such as IT and tech, marketing, and accounting, are much more likely to have remote roles. If you work in one of these sectors, you stand a better chance of securing a remote job. If not, you might want to re-evaluate your career position and assess whether it would be a wise move to make a career pivot so that you are better aligned with remote work opportunities. Of course, this decision would only be sensible to you if remote work was a greater priority for you in your employment considerations than any other factor.
  • Use remote job boards: Of course, there are quite a few job boards dedicated to remote and flexible jobs, such as FlexJobs and WeWorkRemotely, and there are other traditional job boards such as LinkedIn and Indeed that have filters you can apply to find remote work as well. Just a note of caution: always bear in mind that many job boards serve aggregated data on job listings that are posted elsewhere as well, and are not responsible for the safety or legitimacy of these jobs. Sites such as Indeed do share guidance on how to protect yourself from fake or scam jobs; however it is up to you to be mindful of this when approaching any job platform, and bear in mind that there are some criminals who will play on the fact that you and many others are looking for remote work, just to obtain your personal or financial information. Look out for any red flags, such as jobs that sound too good to be true, obvious spelling mistakes, or the company simply cannot be found existing anywhere on the internet.
  • Edit your resume: Highlight your independent work skills, your background in working remotely or in a hybrid model, and tailor your resume for each remote job you apply to.

Additionally, you should consider:

  • What type of remote job works best for you, whether you want a full-time, hybrid, or freelance remote job.
  • Preparing your physical space, tech set-up, and common interview questions for remote job interviews .
  • Weighing up both the pros and cons of remote work, such as increased flexibility and reduced commuting, versus loneliness and self-paced schedule management, and decide if this is something you are happy to put up with for the long-term.

When applying for a remote job, always ensure that your physical space and internet speed is set up ... [+] to successfully accommodate everything from your remote interview to the day-to-day demands of the role

Following these steps, and looking out for these opportunities within the tech, marketing, app development, and other remote-first industries will enable you to be better aligned to secure your dream remote job—even sooner than you imagined was possible.

SCE Labor Market Survey Shows Sharp Increase in Job Seekers, While Current Job Satisfaction Deteriorates

NEW YORK—The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Center for Microeconomic Data today released the July 2024 SCE Labor Market Survey , which shows a sharp increase in the proportion of job seekers compared to a year ago. Satisfaction with wage compensation as well as with nonwage benefits and promotion opportunities at respondents’ current jobs all deteriorated. The average expected likelihood of receiving an offer in the next four months increased compared to a year ago, while the average expected likelihood of becoming unemployed in the next four months reached a series high. The average expected wage offer (conditional on receiving one) declined year-over-year, while the average reservation wage (the lowest wage at which respondents would be willing to accept a new job) increased year-over-year but retreated slightly from a series high recorded in March 2024.

Experiences

  • Among those who were employed four months ago, 88% were still with the same employer, a series low since the start of the survey and down from 91.4% in July 2023. The rate of transitioning to a different employer increased to 7.1%—the highest reading since the start of the survey—from 5.3% in July 2023. The increase compared to a year ago was primarily driven by women.
  • The proportion of individuals who reported searching for a job in the past four weeks increased to 28.4%—the highest level since March 2014—from 19.4% in July 2023. The increase was most pronounced among respondents older than age 45, those without a college degree, and those with an annual household income less than $60,000.
  • 19.4% of individuals reported receiving at least one job offer in the past four months, essentially unchanged from July 2023. The average full-time offer wage received in the past four months decreased slightly to $68,905 from $69,475 in July 2023.
  • Satisfaction with wage compensation, nonwage benefits, and promotion opportunities at respondents’ current jobs all deteriorated relative to a year ago. Satisfaction with wage compensation at the current job fell to 56.7% from 59.9% in July 2023. Satisfaction with nonwage benefits fell to 56.3% from 64.9%. And satisfaction with promotion opportunities dropped to 44.2% from 53.5%. These declines were largest for women, respondents without a college degree and those with annual household incomes less than $60,000.

Expectations

  • The expected likelihood of moving to a new employer increased to 11.6% from 10.6% in July 2023, while the average expected likelihood of becoming unemployed rose to 4.4% from 3.9% in July 2023. The current reading is the highest since the series started in July 2014.
  • The average expected likelihood of receiving at least one job offer in the next four months increased to 22.2% from 18.7% in July 2023. The average expected likelihood of receiving multiple offers in the next four months rose to 25.4% from 20.6% in July 2023.
  • Conditional on expecting an offer, the average expected annual salary of job offers in the next four months declined to $65,272 from $67,416 in July 2023, though it remains significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. The decline was broad-based across age and education groups.
  • The average reservation wage—the lowest wage respondents would be willing to accept for a new job—increased to $81,147 from $78,645 in July 2023, though it is down slightly from a series high of $81,822 in March 2024.
  • The average expected likelihood of working beyond age 62 increased to 48.3% from 47.7% in July 2023, and versus a series low of 45.8% in March 2024. The average expected likelihood of working beyond age 67 increased to 34.2% from 32% in July 2023, partially reversing the steady declining trend observed in the series since the onset of the pandemic.

About the SCE Labor Market Survey

The SCE Labor Market Survey , fielded as part of the Survey of Consumer Expectations (SCE) since March 2014, provides information on consumers’ experiences and expectations regarding the labor market. Every four months, approximately 1,000 SCE panelists are asked details about their current (or most recent) job. Respondents are asked about job transitions, and about their job search effort and outcomes (number of job offers and offer wages), over the last four months. The currently employed are also asked about their level of satisfaction with wages, non-wage benefits, and their prospects for advancement at their current job. In addition, the survey elicits respondents’ expectations about job transitions over the next four months. Respondents are asked about the likelihood of receiving at least one job offer over the next four months, the expected number of offers, and the expected wages for these offers. The survey also elicits the respondents’ “reservation wage” and retirement expectations.

More information about the SCE survey goals, design, and content can be found here .

U.S. economy added 818,000 fewer jobs than first reported, sign job market has been slowing

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy added 818,000 fewer jobs from April 2023 through March this year than were originally reported, the government said Wednesday. The revised total adds to evidence that the job market has been steadily slowing and likely reinforces the Federal Reserve’s plan to start cutting interest rates soon.

The Labor Department estimated that job growth averaged 174,000 a month in the year that ended in March — a drop of 68,000 a month from the 242,000 that were initially reported. The revisions released Wednesday were preliminary, with final numbers to be issued in February next year.

WATCH: Economist says Federal Reserve too slow to cut interest rates and weakening the economy

The downgraded estimate follows a jobs report for July that was much worse than expected, leading many economists to suggest that the Fed had waited too long to begin cutting interest rates to support the economy. The unemployment rate rose for the fourth straight month, to a still-low 4.3%, and employers added just 114,000 jobs.

The Fed raised its benchmark rate 11 times in 2022 and 2023 to fight inflation, which hit a four-decade high more than two years ago. Year-over-year inflation has since plummeted — from 9.1% in June 2022 to 2.9%, clearing the way for the Fed to begin cutting rates when it next meets in mid-September.

The revised hiring estimates released Wednesday are intended to better account for companies that are either being created or going out of business.

“This doesn’t challenge the idea we’re still in an expansion, but it does signal we should expect monthly job growth to be more muted and put extra pressure on the Fed to cut rates,” said Robert Frick, economist at the Navy Federal Credit Union.

In the revisions, new professional and business services jobs — a broad category that includes managers and technical workers — were reduced by 358,000 in the 12 months that ended in March. Leisure and hospitality employers — including hotels and restaurants — added 150,000 fewer than first reported.

CSIRO to cut up to 500 non-scientific roles as restructure of science agency continues

Australia's national research body, the CSIRO, will cut up to 500 jobs as part of a broader organisational restructure.

Non-research staff are affected, with some research roles already earmarked for cuts earlier this year.

What's next?

The CSIRO staff union has called on the government for more funding to ensure it can continue to carry out world-class research.

The CSIRO will cut up to 500 jobs in a wave of reforms the agency's staff union says is gutting the organisation's capacity to do research.

In an internal memo sent on Tuesday and subsequently published online by the CSIRO's Staff Association, chief executive Doug Hilton announced between 375 to 500 staff in non-research or support roles would be axed.

In the email, titled "An update on our priorities", Dr Hilton outlined cost-saving measures designed "to support CSIRO's financial stability" were needed to reduce expenditure by at least $100 million.

Dr Hilton said the CSIRO was "doing everything possible to minimise staffing impacts" including voluntary redundancies.

The chief executive outlined economic challenges including inflation and increased demand on public spending as being reasons behind the restructure.

"While these changes are essential, I fully appreciate that they are not easy," he wrote.

The newly announced cuts will come from the enterprise services team, which encompasses technical staff supporting scientists, and employees from the legal, finance, IT and other departments.

CSIRO is a government-funded agency with financing of $916.5 million in the 2024-25 financial year, an amount which has remained stable excluding a pandemic boost that ended in 2023.

The secretary of the CSIRO's Staff Association, Susan Tonks, called it a "dark day" for the agency.

"These cuts are a body blow for CSIRO and have the potential to cripple research output as scientists scramble to cover support gaps," she said.

"However, we know that research positions at CSIRO are not safe and the cuts just keep on coming."

The axing of roughly 200 research staff roles was announced from April to July, with health, biosecurity, agriculture and manufacturing scientists and researchers affected.

Research projects in nutrition and human health in Sydney and Adelaide will be closed down as a result of the cuts, the union said.

Earlier this month, the association wrote to Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic to protest an estimated 700 jobs being cut over the course of the cost-saving measures and restructuring.

"These cuts are widespread and reckless, jeopardising vital research and national capabilities in areas such as health, biosecurity (Human Health), climate change, and data sciences including artificial intelligence," the letter said.

"The concerns are not only for the jobs of CSIRO staff, but for the safeguarding of our national resilience and preparedness in a rapidly changing world."

Ms Tonks and the union have called for the minister's intervention in the agency, saying the CSIRO's core purpose is being undermined by the restructure.

A spokesperson from the CSIRO told the ABC in a statement that the organisation's goal was: "to grow CSIRO's research efforts by ensuring we have the right mix of science and skills to tackle the big problems facing the Australian community".

"We are working to implement these changes with minimal impact on staff, while still delivering the best possible impact for Australia," they said of the job cuts.

Mr Husic declined to comment.

How South Korea can support female research leaders

what are research jobs

Seoul National University (SNU), the largest public university in South Korea — where I have worked for nearly 40 years — has roughly 22,000 undergraduate students and a similar number of postgraduate students. Around 36% of undergraduates, and 49% of postgraduates, are women. The university’s 450-odd full-time female faculty members, by comparison, account for 19.7% of the total. As of 2022, nationally, across the academic, government and industry sectors, just 23% of the research workforce is female.

what are research jobs

Nature Index 2024 South Korea

The fall in numbers that occurs during women’s research careers is a major concern. In South Korea, female students in STEM fields constitute 31% of university entrants, and as graduates — generally in their 20s — they are employed at similar rates to men in science and technology roles. But a significant gap emerges in their 30s and continues to their 50s, with a 30% difference in employment rates between men and women in these age groups. There are now roughly 180,000 women in science and technology roles in South Korea who are on a career break, whose return to workplace is urgently needed to shore up the country’s future in science and innovation.

Retention is not the only issue — inequitable access to research funding and leadership positions is another serious problem for South Korea. Out of the roughly 49,000 principal investigators (PIs) who are pursuing governmental research projects across the country, 17.7% are female. This number needs to increase at least two-fold over the next decade to reflect the proportion of female PhD students.

Equally important as the number of PIs is the amount of research funding that is available to them. In South Korean universities, the average amount of government funding won by male PIs in science and technology areas is 165 million won (US$119,393). For women, that figure is 67 million won.

We see further disparity in the number of PIs at universities who were pursuing large projects of more than 1 billion won in 2022; 1,100 men versus 70 women. Considering this gap — which is far wider than in countries such as the United States and United Kingdom — it is noteworthy that women PIs in South Korean universities produce more output per research expenditure than men, in both the total number of papers and the top 25% cited papers in Clarivate’s Science Citation Index.

Since 2001, South Korea has initiated programmes to support the country’s female early career researchers with salaries and its established researchers with grants. These programmes have certainly contributed to the growth of female PIs but have not closed the gap in research funding. Similarly, affirmative action by the government and legislative changes by the National Assembly over this period — many of which have been influenced by initiatives led by female researchers — have improved female faculty numbers in public universities, but do not go far enough.

In 2015, for example, the Association of Women Faculty Councils at National Universities in Korea — a nation-wide network launched through the efforts of the Women Faculty Council and Diversity Council at SNU— set out to highlight the stark gender imbalances in the university sector. This included the fact that public universities hired far fewer female faculty members (15% of the total faculty) than private universities (25%). This initiative prompted the Law on Public Officials in Education to be amended in 2020, recommending that a specific gender does not exceed 75% of faculty composition in public universities. Each university must now submit a yearly plan to achieve this goal until 2030.

Measures such as these have been a strong motivator for improving gender diversity in research, but new strategies are needed if South Korea is to achieve gender parity. Female representation at academic conferences needs be improved, for instance, and the government and funding agencies need to make more proactive measures to increase the number of women PIs in medium- and large-scale research projects.

More female professors need to be hired in science and innovation areas to meet the needs of the growing population of female students, which in engineering and the natural sciences have actually increased over the past 10 years, both in undergraduate and graduate level.

Faced with the fastest declining population in the world, South Korea must do more to bolster the ranks of its highly skilled workforce. Implementing the policies and initiatives necessary to improve the recruitment, retention and the upward mobility of women researchers is of utmost importance for the country’s future success.
