I organized an afterschool program at my high school where food insecure students could receive untouched, leftover food from our cafeteria. Organizing and implementing this large-scale project allowed me to hone my leadership skills for a good cause. At TCU, I plan to continue nurturing my love of service by mitigating community issues throughout my college career.”

The first response reads like a list and tells, rather than shows, readers what the applicant is like. While they mention multiple activities, no detail is provided so the response lacks credibility.

By contrast, the second response focuses on a single project that showcases the applicant’s character and leadership skills. Their service-oriented mindset is clear and lines up with TCU’s values. Though they don’t explicitly mention this, their compassion and problem-solving mindset shine through the response. This is the type of writing that will show admissions officers who you are in a unique and memorable way.

How to Write the TCU College Admissions Essays

As I said in my last p ost , college admissions essays are a crucial component of any college application. So, continuing from the discussion of the ApplyTexas Essays and UT Short Answers, I will focus this week on TCU’s unique essay prompts and the best way to approach each of these topics.

TCU explains on its website the importance of the admissions essay and provides some insights on how best to approach it:

The essay tells us a great deal about our candidates and allows for expression of writing skills, organizational skills, creativity and imagination. The essay should be 300-500 words in length and legible. Feel free to be serious, humorous or somewhere in between.

The main detail here is that these essays should be pretty short, given the word-length recommendation -- basically nothing more than 3-4 paragraphs, which means you won’t be able to cram in a lot of different ideas. Instead, it's best to focus on 1-2 key points.

And the tone? Well, as you can see, the TCU admissions officers are fine with serious or funny. My personal preference is the “somewhere in between” -- in other words, personable and sincere.

Now that we understand generally what TCU is looking for in the college admissions essay, let’s look at its prompts. For each of these, I will provide a basic outline recommendation, including what kinds of content you could include and how to brainstorm topics.

PROMPT #1 : At TCU, our mission statement is very important to us. “To educate individuals to think and act as ethical leaders and responsible citizens in the global community.” This is integrated into all aspects of the TCU experience. If you were to write a mission statement about your life, what would it be and how does this mission direct your life and goals?

A mission statement is a declaration of what motivates you, of what makes you tick. It's the underlying reason for why you are doing … well, all that you do. In English-class terms, it's what the character wants, what drives their actions, except now you are the character.

If we were talking about mission statements in terms of Macbeth , King Duncan might say, “To promote the general welfare of Scotland,” whereas Lady Macbeth might say, “To ensure that power is given to those who are most deserving.”

Fortunately, once you get past the hard part of actually determining your mission statement , the question pretty much gives you your essay structure:

Paragraph 1: What would your mission statement about your life be? [~100 words]

This is your introduction paragraph, in which the thesis should be you declaring your life’s mission statement.

Paragraph 2: How does this mission direct your life? [~150 words]

This is your first “body” paragraph. Here you can provide an overview of how your mission statement guides your life. You can focus on some concrete examples of how it has affected you, and then you can use the next paragraph to go deeper on one of these examples.

Paragraph 3: How does this mission direct your goals? [~150 words]

This is your second “body” paragraph. Here you can now talk in more detail about one specific moment from your life, which you should have introduced in the previous paragraph, and how this specific moment has shaped your goals.

Paragraph 4: How would those goals be helped by attending TCU? [~100 words]

This final part is not from the prompt itself but it is implied. You should basically explain how your mission/goals align with those of TCU.

PROMPT #2 : Tell us about the most significant person, experience, or circumstance which has shaped your life thus far. How has he, she, or it influenced your character? How might you use what you have learned to achieve your goals?

The “most significant” X is a common topic across college applications, so I won’t go too deep into this one, but you should note that the question provides a pretty clear structure:

Paragraph 1: Tell us about the most significant person, experience, or circumstance which has shaped your life thus far. [~75 words]

Use the first paragraph to introduce this most influential person or experience. In your thesis, you should focus on yourself and what you learned from your major influence. I would avoid topics related to teachers, coaches, and covid-19 -- unless, of course, you have a strong case for writing about one of those.

Paragraph 2: How has he, she, or it influenced your character? (Pt. 1) [~175 words]

The two middle paragraphs should be a story in which you describe the influential person or experience.

The first part should be like the exposition and rising action of a story. Also, if you are describing a person, you can provide an overview of their personality and how they generally interacted with you and what context you met them or spent time with them.

Paragraph 3: How has he, she, or it influenced your character? (Pt. 2) [~175 words]

The second part of the “story” section should have a climax. Basically, you should go into details on the pivotal moment that changed you. This is where you tell the “heart” of the story and explain its impact on you.

Paragraph 4: How might you use what you have learned to achieve your goals? [~75 words]

In this conclusion paragraph, you can identify how your experience has inspired your career, major, future education plans, etc., and how TCU will help you along the way.

PROMPT #3 : Those we call great will usually point to some failure in their lives as a pivotal moment leading them to their successful path. Tell us about a time in your life in which failure propelled you toward success.

This type of prompt -- the “failure” essay -- is also pretty common among college applications. In this case, you probably could recycle an essay from ApplyTexas or the Common Application and shorten it to 500 words. However, if you are starting fresh, then I recommend you follow a similar structure to that of Prompt #2 :

Paragraph 1: " Tell us about a time in your life in which failure propelled you toward success." Include a brief overview + thesis. [~75 words]

Paragraph 2: Story of the failure -- what led up to the failure and describe the failure itself. [~175 words]

Paragraph 3: Story of the failure -- what you did to overcome it and the initial impact. [~175 words]

Paragraph 4: Conclusion of what you overall learned and how you plan to use this knowledge in the future. [~75 words]

PROMPT #4 : In her best-selling novel The Secret Life of Bees, TCU alumna Sue Monk Kidd wrote, “The hardest thing on earth is choosing what matters.” What matters to you?

A seemingly open-ended question, this prompt shares a lot of similarities to the mission statement prompt. Both are getting at the same idea: what motivates you? Therefore, you can brainstorm and structure your response just like you would for the first prompt:

Paragraph 1: What matters to you most? [~100 words]

Identify what matters to you most (I recommend something somewhat serious, since more “humorous” topics will probably come off as slight and thus make your response feel trivial). Provide some background or overview on why this thing matters to you. The thing itself could be a concept, such as “great design,” or a character trait, like “honesty,” and even something social or cultural, like “family.” I’d try to think a little bit outside of the box.

Paragraph 2: What made this matter to you? [~150 words]

Whatever you describe probably didn’t matter to you from Day 1, so you should explain in this paragraph what made you interested in it. Or how it came to matter the most to you.

Paragraph 3: How has this concern for what matters to you influenced your thoughts and actions? [~150 words]

Once you establish just how your topic came to matter so much to you, you should then explain its impact on your life (just like in the mission statement essay). Explain how you have taken this thing to heart and have applied it in some tangible way to your everyday life.

Paragraph 4: How do you plan to further think/act in the future? [~100 words]

Finally, like with all the other essays, you should conclude by stating how you will extend what you have done into the future and, specifically, at TCU.

How to Approach Supplemental Essays

When our students dig into the college application process, they are often surprised to encounter not only the main Common Application’s personal statement , but also a host of supplemental essay questions. These assignments are often school-specific writing prompts for which a student must also craft thoughtful, well-written replies.

Supplemental essays are often more focused than the Common App assignment, though they vary in length and scope. Their prompts tackle subjects that range from deeper explorations of a student’s background to their collegiate and academic interests.

We often encourage our students to nail down their personal statement topic first, then ask them to approach their supplemental essays in priority order, according to submission deadlines. Many schools will offer prompts that are similar in theme and content to one another (for example, many institutions now ask about a student’s most important activity ), so it is helpful for students to gather and review all supplemental questions before beginning the brainstorm process to see where they might naturally overlap.

Elite institutions often have extensive supplemental sections, as do some honors programs, so students should keep this in mind as they hunt for their essay questions and map out their plan of attack.

All supplemental essays should be given the same time and care as the main Common Application essay. These supplements not only are an excellent opportunity to show a school both your competence and level of devotion to their institution, but also offer opportunities to paint some personality into your application. So embrace supplements, use your unique voice, and show these schools what you’re made of!

It really depends. Typically, the more competitive the university, the more arduous the supplemental essay requirements. Most top universities ask for at least three supplemental essays, but some only require one short essay.

The most common supplemental essay topics are:

The Why Essay , which asks applicants to discuss their interest in their intended major and/or the school in question.
The Activity Essay , which asks applicants to describe their involvement in an activity that is meaningful to them.
The Community Essay , which asks about a community the applicant belongs to and the role that community plays in their life (and vice versa!).
The Diversity Essay , which often asks applicants to explore how they champion diversity and inclusion in their communities and/or how they engage with people from different backgrounds or who hold opposing views.
The Short Answer , which asks applicants to answer prompts in very few words (or characters) to add context to their application and a splash of personality.
The Oddball Essay , which asks applicants to tap into their creativity to connect curveball questions to their lives and interests.

Just like with the Common App personal statement, you’re going to want to write authentically about yourself while addressing all parts of each supplemental essay prompt. Many schools want to better understand how you see yourself contributing to their campus community and/or diversity and inclusion efforts along with how you hope to use your education to achieve your goals. So, be honest and forward-thinking, and don’t forget to customize each supplemental essay so it’s specific to each school you’re submitting to. That means doing research and weaving information into your essays that demonstrates the amount of time and thought you’ve put into your application.

Each admissions department has their own process for reviewing applications, and some admissions committees put more weight on supplemental essays than others, but all admissions departments that offer applicants the opportunity to pen additional essays are doing so for a reason: to better understand the applicant and compare similarly qualified candidates. It’s in the applicant’s best interest to not only provide admissions with as much information regarding their candidacy as possible, but also go the extra mile. At highly competitive institutions, admissions officers are looking for reasons to remove students from the applicant pool—don’t let poorly written or (*gulp*) incomplete supplemental essays work against you!

Absolutely not. Please do not reuse content from your Common App essay in your supplements. Although it’s possible for you to expand upon an idea, activity, or community that you mention in your Common App essay in your supplements, you should never recycle content or any phrasing word for word.

Start by reading through all the prompts. Next, jot down ideas that come to your mind (no matter how silly they may seem!). Everyone has a story to tell, and we’re willing to bet you’re more interesting than you think. Give yourself plenty of time to consider different topics and revise, revise, revise! How To Approach the Required TCU Short Essays

Tcu’s two short essay questions provide an opportunity to get to know students better and learn what qualities they would bring to the tcu campus. here are some tips for how to approach these important essays. remember, tcu admissions counselors look carefully at these essays when considering your application, so spend the time to brainstorm and plan your response with your audience in mind..

Here’s how to approach Prompt 1

At tcu, it is our vision to be a world-class, values-centered university. we value academics, intellectual inquiry, creative expression, leadership, service, diversity, and the appreciation of the human experience. with which one of tcu’s core values do you most align and why (maximum length: 200 words) , notice that this prompt gives students 7 different tcu values to choose from when deciding on the theme of this short essay. there’s a value that could work for virtually any student. this essay should be straightforward because you don’t have any room for fluff., approach 1: tweak existing writing. , if you’ve already written about leadership, an academic passion, or a service project for another essay, it’s perfectly fine to tweak it to fit this prompt. efficiency is key when you have a lot of essays to write. , pro tip: do your research make sure you have researched how you would bring the value you discuss to tcu —and use specifics. for example, what student organization might you get involved with what type of roommate or classmate will you be what research project would you like to work on, approach 2: start from scratch. , look at the 7 values and see if you can eliminate any immediately. then, look at the existing values and brainstorm anecdotes from your life experience in high school that could demonstrate each of the existing values. pick the one that you could most easily write about., example: if you most value diversity, talk about a time when you interacted with someone very different from you. what did you learn from that experience how have you applied what you learned in other areas of your life how would you bring what you learned to tcu pro-tip: make sure to be specific here, here’s how to approach prompt 2, describe how you have already contributed to creating an inclusive environment in your community or how you plan to contribute to an inclusive college environment in the future. (maximum length: 200 words), if you’ve already written about how you’ve contributed to an inclusive environment at your school, camp, job, or maybe on your sports team, you can tweak it to fit this prompt. pro tip: end by being specific about how you will contribute to an inclusive community at tcu., approach 2 : start from scratch — have already contributed to an inclusive community., think about ways you have been inclusive to all different types of people. write them down. maybe you have reached out to a shy classmate and asked them questions to make them feel included in a discussion. maybe you regularly say hi to everyone in the hallway, even if you don’t know them. maybe you are in the international club to learn about different cultures. maybe you’re the person who makes sure no one is left out. whatever the case, give a specific example. pro tip: end by being specific about how you will contribute to an inclusive community at tcu., approach 3: start from scratch — haven’t yet contributed to an inclusive environment but plan to in college. if there is really nothing you can identify from your past experiences of how you’ve contributed to an inclusive environment, you can choose to answer the second part of the prompt. here’s where you need to think ahead and reflect on who you want to be in college. why is tcu the perfect place to develop your ability to be more inclusive , pro tip: do your tcu research and write about the specific ways you will do this, such as a particular student organization you plan to join and what you will do to make it more inclusive., as always, have someone else proofread your essay before you paste it into the application.

Thinking about applying here as I feel a strong mission fit+hometown ties to north Texas. As in my application is ready to submit today, however 2 things I’m considering. 1) I won’t have an MCAT score till July 2nd. As a low GPA applicant with upward trend for 40 credits (3.28 cGPA, 3.04sGPA) I’m wondering what a realistic MCAT score would make me competitive here and if I should wait to see my score as I’m not made of money and don’t want to flush $200 for the only AMCAS school I’d apply to. 2) I’m worried if I wait until I see my MCAT score and it is considered competitive then I’m disadvantaging myself by applying a month later effectively. Would love to hear your thoughts! @wysdoc

Received a C in biochem but was planning on retaking it online if I get past the secondary and also have not taken physiology but could take easily and make an A (degree does not require it). Is it worth applying? this would be my absolute top choice as my parents live in the Dallas area and have the most incredible support system here but also have a 505 mcat and a 3.7 GPA and a strong mission fit. Would they still consider me? @wysdoc

Anyone else having trouble gaining access to the portal? I used the Account Creation link, and it said that an email was sent to my email address, but it wasn’t! My AAMC email address is the same that I’ve been using for secondaries, and for all of my other account creations, the emails were sent to the same email address. I’ve had no issues prior to this one! Anyone know how to resolve the issue? I’ve checked my spam and junk mails. @SOM Admissions

Hi! I have a quick question about prerequisites. Can an Intro to Anthropology class count as a humanities course, or is it only a social science? I noticed some schools consider Anthropology as a humanities course, but wanted to double-check since the TCU website mentions that cultural anthropology is a social science course. Thanks!

Honesty and the TCU Honors supplementals

So the TCU Honors application includes some supplemental essays and instructs students to write them entirely on their own, with no editing or help of any kind from a parent, teacher, paid essay specialist etc.

What are the chances that my daughter is one of the only students who follows this instruction? We call her the moral police so I assure you she wouldn’t ever let anyone so much as peak at it, but I wonder how many others will.

Also…wouldn’t it be nice if this was the standard for all college essays? A LOT of weight is put on the essays, but not everyone has the same resources for perfecting them.

@PickleParent I think this is a good standard for supplements, yes, since it forces us students to be introspective and demonstrate our writing skills that would be further developed in college. As far as ALL essays, of course not everyone would follow this. I think it is helpful to have other sets of eyes on things before submitting them - that’s not to say they are writing them or changing phrases, but rather pointing out errors or sentence structure that could use rearrangement/ are confusing, before turning in the final copy.

In college, many of the many papers I have written I have showed to trusted friends to review for their feedback, and to take constructive criticism and improve them. So in that way, perhaps application essays and college are similar. Just a thought. Go Frogs!

Hi, I know my question pertains to the Chancellor’s scholarship, but no one has posted on that thread in a long time. I have been accepted as a finalist for TCU’s Chancellor’s scholarship this year and will head to campus on Febuary 10th for the interview and all. I was wondering if you had some more information on what the interview actually looks like or would be willing to provide some tips for it. I thought I read that the interview is split into two meetings, one maybe with a panel? If you could give me some insight into what the whole process looks like and how I should prepare for the weekend that would be great. Thanks!

Hi @lvw137 , congratulations on being invited! That’s huge! My first piece of advice would be to bring a jacket lol because it looks to be really cold in Fort Worth this week, but that is definitely not what it is like most of the time. I have posted about CSW before, so yes you read about it correctly. I assume you have the schedule of events over the three days, and I’m so glad that it is in person again! Enjoy yourself, ask current students questions as they will have good advice.

I believe the interview format will be like pre-covid again, which yes consists of 2 different interviews (there will be a break between them) with 2 different panels - I can’t guarantee as to the size, but anywhere from 2-5 people I would think. Do you have a prompt for these? I did, so I made a rough outline of things I wanted to include and started practicing in a mirror and timed myself to get it within the prescribed limit. You can be as creative as you want, but make sure also not to be robotic. Tell your interviewers what you have done (don’t be shy), your future plans (if you know), and how you see yourself fitting in TCU (this part is optional). As interviewers, we want to get to know you, not what you think we want to see. They will all want you to succeed.

Remember that every other finalist is just as nervous as you are - and that’s normal! Be open, be friendly, and be yourself. And make sure to take pictures and get some with your parent/guardian as well in case you do end up going to TCU. They’ll be fun to look back on a few years down the road!

Since some time has passed I don’t remember for sure. I think one session was with the presentation / response to prompt, and the other was more of an open-ended conversation/ Q&A. Did you receive any packet or link with instructions? I think the time limit should be somewhere in there, but I checked a recording of me practicing the night before that I saved back then and it was around 6 minutes. Sorry that I can’t be more helpful, I feel like an old person that can’t remember anymore haha, but I’m sure it will all come back to me if I think hard enough. Don’t hesitate to ask more questions!
