How Custom Colors Made My Google Calendar Look Amazing

This task management tool is the best i've found for actually getting things done, how to disable excel's annoying auto-formatting.

Using a template to create a document gives you a jumpstart. A template can include sections, formatting, images, and built-in calculations to simplify the work of creating your document.

For Apple products like Pages and Numbers, templates just aren't as easy to find as they are for Microsoft products like Word and Excel. And what's even harder is finding templates that are free or reasonably priced.

To help you with your search, here are five great websites that offer templates for Pages and Numbers; both free and paid.

1. Template.net

TemplateNet Pages and Numbers Templates

A terrific template resource for many applications, including Pages and Numbers, is Template.net. You can browse or search through thousands of free templates like certificates, cards, contracts, budgets, and inventory sheets.

Toward the top of the main screen, you'll see a scrolling list of applications like Photoshop, Google Docs, Google Sheets, InDesign, and others. This makes it much easier to find templates designed for your application.

Select either Pages or Numbers and then browse through the screens of template options. You'll notice that the free templates are clearly marked and the applications they're available for are also displayed.

When you pick a template that interests you, you'll see helpful details about what it includes such as the size, file format, and orientation. And at the bottom, you'll see similar templates which is ideal for times when you need to create more than one document for your project.

If you find that you'll be visiting the site for templates often, you can check out the Template.net pricing plans for a Pro Membership for unlimited use.

Template.net is a solid choice for Pages and Numbers templates and certainly one to bookmark.

2. iWorkCommunity.com

iWorkCommunity Pages and Numbers Templates

For some truly unique templates, take a look at iWorkCommunity.com. What's great about this site is that the templates are created by Apple software users just like you. In fact, you can submit your own templates to help others.

When you land on the main page, pick Pages, Numbers, Keynote, or Script from the top to browse by the application. You can then narrow down the options with tags on the left or the search box at the bottom. There are templates in a variety of categories like agendas, resumes, schedules, and more.

Select a template that you like and you'll get all of the details including a brief description, file size, and the number of downloads from others. Click the name of the file next to Download and you're on your way.

All templates on iWorkCommunity.com are currently available for free, which makes it definitely worth your time. And remember, if you create a template of your own for Pages or Numbers that you'd like to share, hit the Submit New Template button at the top and help out your fellow document creators!

3. StockLayouts

StockLayouts Pages and Numbers Templates

If you're in the market for a graphics-based template, then StockLayouts is the site for you. It offers free templates for Pages, Numbers, and Keynote along with InDesign, Illustrator, and Microsoft products.

The main page has a section for Free Graphic Design Templates with paid templates below it if those interest you as well. Pick a template and see the details like page size, fold type, and compatibility. Choose your file format in the dropdown box and hit the Download Now button.

Below the template details, you'll see other free templates and those you can purchase for the same type of document.

StockLayouts also offers different pricing structures if you're interested in paid templates. You can buy a single template for a small fee or sign up for a subscription where you can get from ten to 50 templates per month.

For flyers, brochures, newsletters, menus, datasheets, and more, there's a nice collection of graphic design templates on StockLayouts.

Klariti Pages and Numbers Templates

Klariti is another website that provides templates for Apple along with Microsoft products. Although the templates on Klariti are not available for free, there are over 250 options for Pages and Numbers plus a money-back guarantee if you're not satisfied.

Just hit that Apple button on the top navigation, select either Pages or Numbers and then view the long list of templates. The list is neatly arranged so you can see the template name and a brief description easily.

Choose a template and you'll see the entire template with every page, relevant sections, and some helpful FAQs at the bottom. If you're ready to make a purchase, click the Buy Now button and follow the prompts. The site accepts major credit cards and PayPal.

You can find templates for Pages like plans and proposals and those for Numbers like requirements and guides. If you're struggling to find the right template for you and don't mind paying a few bucks, check out Klariti.

5. Vertext42

Vertex42 Numbers household templates

One site that's known for its awesome Excel templates also offers Numbers templates; Vertex42. While there isn't a ton of templates for Numbers, there are still many good options.

To navigate to the templates, go to the Browse Template Categories section on the right of the main page. At the very bottom, click Numbers Templates . When you land on that page, you can find templates in categories like home and family, personal finance, business finance, and office.

If you want to get a template, just click the Download button. Each file is formatted for Numbers. But if you'd like more details on the template or want it for Excel as well, click the link above the Download button labeled "[Template name] for Excel."

The download page for the template will display the filename which should be in Numbers format. Click the Download button on that page to obtain the template.

The templates for Numbers on Vertext42 are currently available for free. And remember to visit the site for Excel or Word templates too!

Whether you’re a first-time solopreneur or a seasoned business owner, the planning process challenges you to examine the costs and tasks involved in bringing a product or service to market. The process can also help you spot new income opportunities and hone in on the most profitable business models.

Though vital, business planning doesn’t have to be a chore. Business plans for lean startups and solopreneurs can simply outline the business concept, sales proposition, target customers and sketch out a plan of action to bring the product or service to market. However, if you’re seeking startup funding or partnership opportunities, you’ll need a write a business plan that details market research, operating costs and revenue forecasting. Whichever startup category you fall into, if you’re at square one, our simple business plan template will point you down the right path.

Copy our free simple business plan template so you can fill in the blanks as we explore each element of your business plan. Need help getting your ideas flowing? You’ll also find several startup scenario examples below.

Download free template as .docx

Whether you need a quick-launch overview or an in-depth plan for investors, any business plan should cover the six key elements outlined in our free template and explained below. The main difference in starting a small business versus an investor-funded business is the market research and operational and financial details needed to support the concept.

1. Your Mission or Vision

Start by declaring a “dream statement” for your business. You can call this your executive summary, vision statement or mission. Whatever the name, the first part of your business plan summarizes your idea by answering five questions. Keep it brief, such as an elevator pitch. You’ll expand these answers in the following sections of the simple business plan template.

  • What does your business do? Are you selling products, services, information or a combination?
  • Where does this happen? Will you conduct business online, in-store, via mobile means or in a specific location or environment?
  • Who does your business benefit? Who is your target market and ideal customer for your concept?
  • Why would potential customers care? What would make your ideal customers take notice of your business?
  • How do your products and/or services outshine the competition? What would make your ideal customers choose you over a competitor?

These answers come easily if you have a solid concept for your business, but don’t worry if you get stuck. Use the rest of your plan template to brainstorm ideas and tactics. You’ll quickly find these answers and possibly new directions as you explore your ideas and options.

2. Offer and Value Proposition

This is where you detail your offer, such as selling products, providing services or both, and why anyone would care. That’s the value proposition. Specifically, you’ll expand on your answers to the first and fourth bullets from your mission/vision.

As you complete this section, you might find that exploring value propositions uncovers marketable business opportunities that you hadn’t yet considered. So spend some time brainstorming the possibilities in this section.

For example, a cottage baker startup specializing in gluten-free or keto-friendly products might be a value proposition that certain audiences care deeply about. Plus, you could expand on that value proposition by offering wedding and other special-occasion cakes that incorporate gluten-free, keto-friendly and traditional cake elements that all guests can enjoy.

3. Audience and Ideal Customer

Here is where you explore bullet point number three, who your business will benefit. Identifying your ideal customer and exploring a broader audience for your goods or services is essential in defining your sales and marketing strategies, plus it helps fine-tune what you offer.

There are many ways to research potential audiences, but a shortcut is to simply identify a problem that people have that your product or service can solve. If you start from the position of being a problem solver, it’s easy to define your audience and describe the wants and needs of your ideal customer for marketing efforts.

Using the cottage baker startup example, a problem people might have is finding fresh-baked gluten-free or keto-friendly sweets. Examining the wants and needs of these people might reveal a target audience that is health-conscious or possibly dealing with health issues and willing to spend more for hard-to-find items.

However, it’s essential to have a customer base that can support your business. You can be too specialized. For example, our baker startup can attract a broader audience and boost revenue by offering a wider selection of traditional baked goods alongside its gluten-free and keto-focused specialties.

4. Revenue Streams, Sales Channels and Marketing

Thanks to our internet-driven economy, startups have many revenue opportunities and can connect with target audiences through various channels. Revenue streams and sales channels also serve as marketing vehicles, so you can cover all three in this section.

Revenue Streams

Revenue streams are the many ways you can make money in your business. In your plan template, list how you’ll make money upon launch, plus include ideas for future expansion. The income possibilities just might surprise you.

For example, our cottage baker startup might consider these revenue streams:

  • Product sales : Online, pop-up shops , wholesale and (future) in-store sales
  • Affiliate income : Monetize blog and social media posts with affiliate links
  • Advertising income : Reserve website space for advertising
  • E-book sales : (future) Publish recipe e-books targeting gluten-free and keto-friendly dessert niches
  • Video income : (future) Monetize a YouTube channel featuring how-to videos for the gluten-free and keto-friendly dessert niches
  • Webinars and online classes : (future) Monetize coaching-style webinars and online classes covering specialty baking tips and techniques
  • Members-only content : (future) Monetize a members-only section of the website for specialty content to complement webinars and online classes
  • Franchise : (future) Monetize a specialty cottage bakery concept and sell to franchise entrepreneurs

Sales Channels

Sales channels put your revenue streams into action. This section also answers the “where will this happen” question in the second bullet of your vision.

The product sales channels for our cottage bakery example can include:

  • Mobile point-of-sale (POS) : A mobile platform such as Shopify or Square POS for managing in-person sales at local farmers’ markets, fairs and festivals
  • E-commerce platform : An online store such as Shopify, Square or WooCommerce for online retail sales and wholesale sales orders
  • Social media channels : Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest shoppable posts and pins for online sales via social media channels
  • Brick-and-mortar location : For in-store sales , once the business has grown to a point that it can support a physical location

Channels that support other income streams might include:

  • Affiliate income : Blog section on the e-commerce website and affiliate partner accounts
  • Advertising income : Reserved advertising spaces on the e-commerce website
  • E-book sales : Amazon e-book sales via Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing
  • Video income : YouTube channel with ad monetization
  • Webinars and online classes : Online class and webinar platforms that support member accounts, recordings and playback
  • Members-only content : Password-protected website content using membership apps such as MemberPress

Nowadays, the line between marketing and sales channels is blurred. Social media outlets, e-books, websites, blogs and videos serve as both marketing tools and income opportunities. Since most are free and those with advertising options are extremely economical, these are ideal marketing outlets for lean startups.

However, many businesses still find value in traditional advertising such as local radio, television, direct mail, newspapers and magazines. You can include these advertising costs in your simple business plan template to help build a marketing plan and budget.

pages business plan template mac

5. Structure, Suppliers and Operations

This section of your simple business plan template explores how to structure and operate your business. Details include the type of business organization your startup will take, roles and responsibilities, supplier logistics and day-to-day operations. Also, include any certifications or permits needed to launch your enterprise in this section.

Our cottage baker example might use a structure and startup plan such as this:

  • Business structure : Sole proprietorship with a “doing business as” (DBA) .
  • Permits and certifications : County-issued food handling permit and state cottage food certification for home-based food production. Option, check into certified commercial kitchen rentals.
  • Roles and responsibilities : Solopreneur, all roles and responsibilities with the owner.
  • Supply chain : Bulk ingredients and food packaging via Sam’s Club, Costco, Amazon Prime with annual membership costs. Uline for shipping supplies; no membership needed.
  • Day-to-day operations : Source ingredients and bake three days per week to fulfill local and online orders. Reserve time for specialty sales, wholesale partner orders and market events as needed. Ship online orders on alternating days. Update website and create marketing and affiliate blog posts on non-shipping days.

6. Financial Forecasts

Your final task is to list forecasted business startup and ongoing costs and profit projections in your simple business plan template. Thanks to free business tools such as Square and free marketing on social media, lean startups can launch with few upfront costs. In many cases, cost of goods, shipping and packaging, business permits and printing for business cards are your only out-of-pocket expenses.

Cost Forecast

Our cottage baker’s forecasted lean startup costs might include:

Business Need Startup Cost Ongoing Cost Source

Gross Profit Projections

This helps you determine the retail prices and sales volume required to keep your business running and, hopefully, earn income for yourself. Use product research to spot target retail prices for your goods, then subtract your cost of goods, such as hourly rate, raw goods and supplier costs. The total amount is your gross profit per item or service.

Here are some examples of projected gross profits for our cottage baker:

Product Retail Price (Cost) Gross Profit

Bottom Line

Putting careful thought and detail in a business plan is always beneficial, but don’t get so bogged down in planning that you never hit the start button to launch your business . Also, remember that business plans aren’t set in stone. Markets, audiences and technologies change, and so will your goals and means of achieving them. Think of your business plan as a living document and regularly revisit, expand and restructure it as market opportunities and business growth demand.

How to design and print your own business card using Pages

By Charlie Sorrel • 2:30 pm, October 25, 2017

Business cards refuse to go away.

Today, almost everyone carries a smartphone, and that’s where we keep our contacts lists. And yet we still exchange business cards. Why? They’re easy to use, they don’t require you to mess withAirDrop, or any other convoluted way to share, and — perhaps most important — they’re customary. We’re used to handing over our details on card. So today we’re going to see how to make and print a business card in Pages, for Mac or iOS. The good news is, it’s super easy. The bad news? Think of the trees.

Do we really still need business cards?

The answer to this comes from the Mobile World Congress, the yearly trade show in Barcelona where the the newest mobile tech is hawked. There’s always a new startup there trying to replace the business card with some kind of clunky app-based “solution,” but the whole show runs on paper cards. But when I tried to go card-free one year, every time I had to exchange contact details I had to explain myself, all while scrawling my email address onto scraps of paper.

Worse, if you don’t have a card, PR folks assume that you’re not legit. An official-looking card “proves” that you work for whoever you say you work for. And a card is pretty much mandatory to get into press events.

How to design a business card in Pages

Pages has several business card templates built in. These are better than starting from scratch, because they’ve already taken care of the layout of multiple cards on a page, which is the most annoying part of printing business cards from a word-processor app (fancier publishing apps like InDesign have tools to make this easier).

To design a card, we will choose one of these templates, redesign one of the cards to our liking, and then copy and paste that new design across the entire page. There’s no way to automate the last step, but we can make it less painful. One final note before we begin: The screenshots here show Pages on an iPad, but the process works exactly the same on the Mac.

Pick a template

Pick one of these fine templates to get you started.

Open up Pages and tap the little + icon, then scroll down to check out the templates. I picked the Classic Business Cards template because it is the simplest, and therefore easy to customize. Tap to open.

Switch on guides

Make sure all of these are on.

Next, we switch on Pages’ smart guides . These are lines which appear whenever you drag an object, in order to make it easier to line things up. To switch on the smart guides, tap the … at the top right of the window to access Pages’ settings, and toggle the switches for Center Guides , Spacing Guides , and Edge Guides . Exit settings by tapping the … again.

Edit your business card

You only need to edit the first card in the template.

Now we start on the design. First, you should replace the sample text with your own contact details. Just tap or click into the existing text fields and change the information. Do this by double-tapping on the text to make it editable. Type in your own details for the name, job title, and contact information fields (these fields may vary if you chose a different template).

Next, we’ll change the typefaces. I like Helvetica, so I’ll change my card to use that. I’ll also make the name bold so it stands out. To access these text tools, tap the little paintbrush icon in the toolbar, and then tap the Text label at the top of the sidebar. You’ll be familiar with these tools.

Change the fonts

This is where you pick your typeface.

To change the fonts, font sizes, and other attributes, just tap on the text in the main window, and then make the changes in the sidebar. One thing to note here is that these business card templates are page layout documents . That is, the text is contained in boxes, instead of being allowed to roam free across the page. Boxes can be grouped together, and if you’re using the same Classic template as me, then you’ll notice that the name and job title boxes are already grouped, because when you tap on ones they both get selected.

If you want to apply different styles to each of these fields, you can just double tap each one to select it individually. Or you can sell all fields and apply the same typeface at once. To access the different styles contained in a typeface (bold, italic, and so on), tap the little i next to the name of the typeface — Helvetica Neue in my case.

Now is also the time to experiment with layout. Just drag the fields around until you like the look of the layout. You’ll notice that the smart guides will pop up automatically to help get things properly aligned.

Getting ready for print

The next part is the most boring part, because it involves copying and pasting the card you created into all the other spots on the page. There’s no good way to automate this, so you’ll just have to get on with it.

First, group all the text boxes in your card. This locks the layout and makes it easy to paste as a single object. To group the text fields, select them all. On the iPad, this is done by placing and keeping your finger on one box, while tapping the others. Remember, we’re only grouping the fields in the first card, the one we already edited. When they are all selected, tap Group in the black popover bubble.

Group all the elements of your card together.

Now, let’s delete the rest of the cards. Select them all, in the same way you just selected the elements of you card, above. Then tap Delete in the black popover bubble.

Next, tap your card and then tap Copy in the black popover bubble, then tap on a blank spot on the page and tap Paste in the black popover bubble. You can paste several copies, and then align them, or align them as you go. Either way, you can use the smart guides to make sure everything is aligned.

The built-in guides help to line things up.

Printing your cards

If your printer handles card, then you can print at home. Just load up the card stock into the printer (the size is indicated at the bottom of each page of the template — in this case it is Avery 5371). Then hit print, and print the cards. You may have noticed that the card template we used had two pages. Just ignore the second page. If it will be identical to the first, then why bother, right? Just make sure to print only the first page of your document. If you’re planning to send out the document as a PDF, though, you should delete the second page. Do this by tapping the view options icon at top right, next to the Documents button. Then chose to Page Thumbnails . Then, in the newly-appeared column, tap the thumbnail for the second page, and tap Delete in the black popover bubble.

Printing on the iPAd is easy, if you have an AirPrint printer.

On the iPad, printing is just as easy. Tap the … icon at top right, then tap Print , and follow along with the AirPrint dialog.

If you don’t have a printer, or you want your local printshop to use some fancy cards stock, then you should save the file as a PDF. Just above the Print button in the … menu is the Export button. Tap that, then choose how you’re going to send the PDF in the standard share dialog box. You can also choose to save the PDF in the Files app to deal with later.

There are plenty of other options for your card. You can add images, and you can really go to town on the text formatting. Just remember that you need to line everything up using the smart guides before printing, so that chopping the cars into card-sized cards is simple. Good luck!

Your fellow users have no control over what the Pages product team provide as basic Pages templates. Send them feedback from your Pages application menu.

Apple never intended Pages to be more than a consumer grade application, leaving the business focus to other vendors (e.g Microsoft) to provide advanced functionality. You may be able to open an MS Word business plan template in Pages provided that it has no Microsoft Basic library requirements. Or use Word itself.

Need a Business Plan Template? Here Is Apple's 1981 Plan for the Mac. If you want to write a business plan, Apple's plans for the Macintosh can help.

By Matthew McCreary Jun 11, 2018

Business plans are often composed of four parts. There is typically an executive summary, a marketing plan, a management team description and a breakdown of company finances. When Apple's Joanna Hoffman created the preliminary business plan for the original Macintosh in 1981 (available in full here ), she added one more part: open issues.

If you're looking for a business plan template you can use to outline your product or service, you probably can't find a better business to emulate than Apple. Here is a breakdown of what Apple covered in its 29-page document.

Related: How to Create a Marketing Plan

1. Apple Product Overview

The point of an executive summary is to succinctly describe a large amount of material without making people read too much. The quicker you can get others to understand your offering's value, the better off you'll be. Hoffman summarizes the Mac's unique value with just four charts and two paragraphs.

The Mac's premise was simple -- most companies sold computers in four price brackets:

  • $500 or less
  • $501 to $1,500
  • $1,500 to $3,000
  • $3,000 to $5,000 (or more)

However, the first two brackets were reserved for handheld or low-performing devices. With the Macintosh, Apple planned to create a computer in the second bracket while still maintaining high-quality hardware and software.

pages business plan template mac

Here's what Hoffman wrote in the Mac's executive summary: "I currently know of no products being developed by competition for Band 2 (unfortunately this doesn't mean there arn't [sic] any!). One would expect serious business customers will move up to Band 4 and the job of Macintosh and VLC is to migrate the remaining Band 3 customers to Band 2, leaving Band 3 manufacturers out in the cold!!"

In other words, Hoffman was unaware of any high-functioning computers being sold in the second price bracket -- from $500 to $1,500 -- where Apple planned to position its Macintosh. Most brands sold computers instead for somewhere between $1,500 and $3,000, which Apple considered the third bracket. Its plan was to create an accessible, affordable computer for less than $1,500 (the Mac) and an ultra-powerful option for more than $3,000 (the LISA).

That way, users had their choice of computers and Apple avoided direct competition with other computers in the same price range.

2. Macintosh Markets and Software Ranking

Hoffman opened the second section of the Mac's business plan with a simple, but important, statement: "The advantage of a product line is that each individual product does not have to do everything."

The Macintosh did not need to have identical capabilities to its other offerings, like the powerful-but-expensive LISA, because those who preferred more functionality could simply buy the LISA instead.

pages business plan template mac

That's why Apple played up the Mac's differences in its marketing plans. In mock posters, Apple labeled the Mac as "LISA's little brother."

You can see how Apple chose to emphasize Mac's differences from LISA in the famous 1984 Super Bowl commercial, three years after Apple created its preliminary business plan. In an interview with Bloomberg , Lee Clow (one of the creatives on the ad) explains how the ad was meant to show that computers were finally accessible to everyone, and not just for Big Brother or the elite.

In its business plan, Apple also broke down how the lower cost and accessibility could affect three marketplaces:

  • For the office: "Every day, more managers rely on computers to help perform their functions effectively and efficiently. MAC makes it possible for any manager to experience the automated office with minimum investment of time and money. MAC will be a rewarding first computer experience."
  • For education: "As Word Processors are replacing typewriters in the real world, students need to learn word processing, not just typing. MAC will help the students of the '80s learn the tools of the '80s and prepare Computer Literate students for colleges and employment."
  • For the home: "The family Macintosh facilitates management of personal finances and records, makes it possible to take advantage of convenient services such as home banking and home shopping. MAC also provides Entertainment and Education for every member of the family."

Look at the language in these statements -- you see words like "any" and "every." You see that Apple means to help "the students of the '80s" -- not some students or most , but all of them. In each case, Apple positioned the Mac to be available to more people than ever before.

3. Macintosh Organization, Staffing and Budget

pages business plan template mac

Some companies choose to separate the Staffing and Budget sections, but Apple chose to combine them in its Mac business plan. In large part, this is because Apple's staffing decisions affected its budget so heavily.

In July of 1981, when Hoffman wrote and Steve Jobs approved the preliminary Mac business plan, there were 28 employees working on the project. By December, the company estimated there would be 63. As a result, a large portion of the Macintosh operating expenses were tied up in paychecks.

In this section of its business plan, Apple also broke down the cost of making a Macintosh ($397), how much it would cost to distribute the products, and the potential operating profit.

pages business plan template mac

Apple broke down the operating profit for a variety of different price points, from offering the Macintosh for $995 all the way up to its projected price point of $1495. That way, it could understand how much it should sell the Macs for in order to make the maximum profit and stay in the black.

4. Open Issues

Apple's preliminary business plan hadn't solved every potential problem the Macintosh would face. However, in its final section, the company did lay out the major challenges ahead. They were:

  • "Europe has not been given much consideration yet."
  • "We are designing our packaging to accept a door-less disk drive only. ... Should we be taking this risk?"
  • "Who will manufacture Macintosh?"
  • "Is our schedule realistic?"
  • "How do we get PCS to feel a 'part' of the Macintosh?"

Note the fourth issue in particular. Apple wondered whether its 1982 release date was overly optimistic. Given that the Macintosh was actually released two years later, in 1984, clearly there was cause for concern. But, Apple's business plan allowed for the company to foresee that and react accordingly.

Related: Use These 5 Steps to Create a Marketing Plan

The Apple Macintosh business plan template

Apple's early business plan helped organize its efforts for the Macintosh, and the Macintosh has helped revolutionize the computer industry.

That isn't to say everything went exactly according to plan. The first part of the Macintosh business plan was an overview of the product, or an executive summary. It explained how the Macintosh would be more affordable than any of its competitors. In the second part of the business plan, which explained the company's marketing plans, you can see how Apple planned to market the Macintosh as a computer for the people. This idea was then clearly executed in its 1984 Super Bowl ad.

However, due to the marketing costs, Apple ended up selling the Macintosh for $2,495 -- well over its intended price. The third section of the business plan broke down the company's organization, staffing plans and budget, placing Jobs at the top of the Macintosh's organization chart. However, just a year after the first Macintosh was released, Jobs resigned from Apple and started NeXT.

Those were massive setbacks, but life happens. Apple and Joanna Hoffman knew that when they put together the business plan, and that's why the fourth and final section asked questions that Macintosh needed to address before its launch.

When you're writing your own business plan, you don't have to do everything Apple did. You probably shouldn't, in fact. But, you can use this plan as a template to organize your thoughts. You can even use it as inspiration to admit you don't know everything. Clearly, not even Apple knew the future.

Create a custom template in Pages on Mac

If you create a document that you want to use again as a model for other documents, you can save it as a template . Creating your own template can be as simple as adding your company logo to an existing template, or you can design a completely new template.

You can add your custom template to the template chooser, or save it as a file to share with others or to install and use on your iPhone or iPad.

The template chooser with My Templates as the last category on the left. Custom templates are displayed in the order they are created and can’t be rearranged.

Save a document as a template

Select File > Save as Template (from the File menu at the top of your screen).

Click an option:

Add to Template Chooser: Type a name for the template, then press Return. Your template appears in the My Templates category in the template chooser.

Save: Type a name for the template, then select where you want to save it.

If you save it to iCloud, the next time you open Pages on your iPhone or iPad, the template appears as a downloadable file in the document manager.

When you create a new template, you start with an existing template (Blank or any other template), make changes, then save it as a custom template. The original template remains unchanged. Custom templates appear in the My Templates category in the template chooser.

Note: Only templates that appear in the template chooser can be used to create new templates. If you want to use a custom template that’s not in the template chooser, install it first.

In Pages, select File > New (from the File menu at the top of your screen), then double-click the template you want to start with.

Do any of the following:

Delete an existing place holder or background graphic: Select the object you want to remove and press Delete on your keyboard. If the object still can’t be deleted, you may have to unlock it first. If the object is on a section layout in a word-processing document, choose Arrange > Section Layouts > Make Section Layouts Selectable (from the Arrange menu at the top of your screen).

Create a media place holder: Select an image or video, then choose Format > Advanced > Define as Media Place Holder (from the Format menu at the top of your screen).

Create a text place holder: Select the text, then select Format > Advanced > Define as Text Place holder (from the Format menu at the top of your screen).

Add a watermark or background object: In a word-processing document, select the text or object you want to place on the background, then choose Arrange > Section Layouts > Move Object to Section Layout (from the Arrange menu at the top of your screen). In a page layout document, you can add watermarks and background objects to page templates that are saved with the template.

In the template chooser, Control-click the template name, then select Rename or Delete.

If you’re renaming, type a new name, then press Return.

After you save a custom template you created, you can’t edit it. However, you can use it as the basis for a new template.

Select File > New, then double-click the custom template you want to use as the basis for a new template.

Custom templates appear in the My Templates category of the template chooser. If you want to use a custom template that doesn’t appear there, you must first install the custom template (see the instructions above).

Make your changes, select File > Save as Template, then select an option to save the document as a new template.

You can delete the old template after you create the new one.

On your iPhone or iPad, you manage custom templates in the document manager .
