What is a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree?

Boise State’s online Master of Social Work (MSW) degree is designed for individuals passionate about making a difference in the lives of others. Unlike fields such as medicine or counseling, social work emphasizes a holistic view of individuals within their environments, addressing crucial issues like human rights, social and economic justice, equality and diversity.

What is an MSW degree?

An MSW degree, or Master of Social Work, is an advanced professional degree that equips you with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in social work. This degree focuses on specialized areas such as clinical practice, policy analysis and community organization, preparing you for leadership roles in various social service settings. Unlike a Bachelor of Social Work, which offers a foundational understanding of social work principles, the MSW degree allows for deeper exploration and application of advanced concepts. Additionally, it serves as a stepping stone for those interested in pursuing a Doctorate in Social Work, which focuses on academic research, teaching and high-level administrative roles.

Why pursue an MSW degree?

Pursuing an MSW degree opens the door to a wide range of rewarding career opportunities in social work. With an MSW, professionals can advance into specialized roles such as clinical social workers, mental health counselors, school social workers, or policy analysts. This degree not only broadens your career options but also significantly enhances your professional growth and earning potential. Graduates are often sought after for leadership positions and are eligible for licensure , leading to higher salaries and increased job security. The skills and expertise gained through the program empower you to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals, families, and communities, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling career.

Key features of the program include:

Community-Centric Learning : You will learn within your communities, fostering strong connections that enable you to address specific local needs effectively while earning your degree.

Distinguished Accreditation : The Master of Social Work Online program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education’s Board of Accreditation, assuring students of superior quality and resources. This accreditation reflects our commitment to meeting and exceeding educational standards, providing you with a reputable and high-quality learning experience.

Field Coordination : A distinguishing feature of the program is the comprehensive field coordination services . Our faculty and staff guide you to secure a practicum placement, a feature not universally available across programs. This unique support benefits both you and agencies, equipping you to contribute meaningfully to your placements while empowering agencies with prepared and competent professionals.

Supportive Network : We feature a dedicated support network that will help guide you from the moment of interest. Our student success team assists with your applications, course selection, and navigating life’s challenges. Field coordinators secure enriching work experiences, while faculty provide expertise both in and out of the classroom, ensuring a seamless academic journey.

Moving ahead with the Master of Social Work Online

Earning a MSW degree is a significant step toward a rewarding career in social work. Whether you’re passionate about advocacy, helping vulnerable populations, or leading and innovating in the field, this program gives you the advanced education and training to reach your goals. Boise State’s MSW degree not only opens the door to diverse career opportunities but also empowers you to make a real difference in society as a social work professional.

Mr. Kevin Solomowitz Wins 2024 Excellence in Innovation Award

Kevin works on two laptops at his desk in a school setting

We're excited to congratulate Kevin Solomowitz, a graduate of Loyola's Educational Technology Program, on being selected as the recipient of this year's Excellence in Innovation Award. This prestigious award recognizes Kevin's outstanding work in integrating technology to create innovative and engaging learning experiences.

Before starting the program, Kevin admittedly lacked confidence in using technology for virtual teaching after having to adopt new tools rapidly during the pandemic. However, through the rigorous coursework and hands-on training in the Ed Tech Program, Kevin's technological skills and self-assurance have skyrocketed. He has become a creative force, seamlessly blending tools like Google Workspace, Kahoot!, video content, and interactive Hebrew lessons to craft dynamic and student-centered lessons. For example, he found that projecting maps and videos sparked his students' curiosity far more than textbooks alone. His Hebrew keyboard projection exercise is an ingenious way to get students practicing vocabulary at their own pace.

Beyond his own classroom, Kevin has taken a leadership role in providing professional development and mentoring colleagues at his religious school. He has guided teachers in using the school's learning management system and introduced them to user-friendly tools that quickly got them excited about tech integration.

The Learning Design & Technology Program (formerly Educational Technology) is proud to have such a gifted and creative leader among its students. Once again, congratulations to Kevin on this outstanding achievement!

School of Social Work

Social work is a profession devoted to helping people function the best they can in their environment. Social workers are people who care about people who want to make a difference.

The Vision of the School of Social Work

The School of Social Work's Vision is to disrupt global systems of oppression and advance human well-being through effective, efficient, and empowering social work grounded in ethical and social justice frameworks.

SU’s social work program began in 1974 to serve the needs of Maryland and the neighboring states, and since then it has grown to include the dual-degree program with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1990 and a new Master of Social Work Program launched in 2001. In 2006, we expanded to include regional programs at Cecil College Northeast campus, the Eastern Shore Higher Education Center at Chesapeake College and the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown campus and in 2013 to the University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland in California, Maryland. All of SU's undergraduate and graduate social work programs are fully accredited by the Council of Social Work Education, a must for earning licensure.

Meet the School of Social Work faculty and staff .

If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It at SU

When Tylethia’s son battled addiction following a military-related injury, she decided to pursue a degree in social work at SU to make sure other veterans receive the continuity of care they so desperately need.

The Dynamic Profession of Social Work

Social work is a profession with many different opportunities and areas, all with the common goal of helping individuals. According to the National Association of Social Workers : “Social workers are skilled professionals who work to empower individuals, relieve suffering and affect social change. They are generalists and specialists who work in a wide variety of settings but apply common core values, principles and techniques.” Our programs are all accredited by the Council on Social Work Education , which is essential for licensure after graduation. For more information about social work, check out Social Work Helps.

Social workers provide a wide range of services to individuals, families, small groups, communities, and organizations. Working from a strengths perspective, social workers are guided by the values of social justice and human rights. Social workers often reach out to people who may be described as oppressed and underserved.

What exactly does a social worker do? Social workers most commonly work in non-profit agencies and or government agencies.  Fields of social work practice include, but are not limited to, mental health, child welfare, family work, substance abuse, adult and juvenile justice, school or medical social work, geriatric social work, homelessness and housing, domestic violence, and community organizing/development. Social work jobs can be found in various environments like schools, hospitals, communities, and other voluntary organizations. Learn more about Social Work Opportunities.

Wondering if an M.S.W. is for you? Take some non-degree seeking classes to see. Students who wish to enroll as non-degree seeking (not formally admitted to a graduate degree program) are not required to complete a formal application for admission to the department, but must complete application to the university. Non-degree seeking students may complete only the following courses: SOWK 607, SOWK 610, and SOWK 620. Students interested in the Advanced Standing Program must be admitted to the program before taking M.S.W. courses.

Is a social work degree useful? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for social workers is expected to grow much faster than average in the next decade. In addition, there are increased opportunities for social workers who are bilingual and for social workers who want to work in rural, underserved areas.

Graduates are highly competitive in the fast-growing marketplace of behavioral and community health.

PhD, Environmental Health Sciences

The Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health (formerly the Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health) strives to advance knowledge about the effects of environmental factors on human health through innovative, multi-disciplinary research. Programs explore a broad range of environmental health problems and aim to discover solutions that will effectively improve public health outcomes for the citizens of our state, the nation, and the world. Students master an essential core of knowledge in environmental and/or occupational health, epidemiology and biostatistics. Through courses, field studies and laboratory rotations, students gain experience and tools needed to specialize in a key area of environmental health. All students are mentored closely by our faculty members and gain practical experience through research activities.

PhD, Epidemiology

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics provides rigorous training in the fundamental sciences underlying public health practice. It offers a flexible and individualized learning environment to study the distribution and determinants of various diseases, injuries, and other health states in human populations, and the theory and biostatistical techniques for describing, analyzing, and interpreting health data. Our PhD program prepares students for a career in epidemiologic research in an academic, government, or private sector setting. Students will master essential core knowledge in the principles and methodology of epidemiological research and practice. Our program offers three areas of specialization: 1) Epidemiologic Methods, 2) Social Epidemiology, and 3) Environmental Epidemiology.
