PhD: Hospitality and Tourism Management Concentration

This program will prepare you for a career in research and teaching at institutions throughout the United States and abroad.

The coursework includes several hospitality and tourism management courses as well as a group of research design and statistics courses. You will also complete courses in supporting fields of inquiry such as psychology, sociology, management, marketing, etc. The program typically requires four years to finish, including courses, a second-year paper, a comprehensive exam, and a doctoral dissertation. Applicants with strong hospitality and tourism management backgrounds are preferred. Incoming students are expected to have both good written and oral communication skills, as well as the analytical skills required to master research methods and statistics.

Admission requirements

We prefer the GMAT, but we do accept the GRE test as a substitute. In either case, the exam must have been taken within 5 years of the time of application to WSU.

Desired prerequisites

In general, you must meet the following prerequisites to be accepted into the program:

  • A master’s degree (M.S., M.A. in a related discipline, or MBA), although outstanding applicants with bachelor’s degree will be considered
  • A GPA higher than 3.25 on a 4.00 scale
  • Hospitality and/or tourism related background (educational or professional)
  • Interests and goals that complement faculty interests and the program’s goals
  • Letters of recommendation supporting your candidacy for admission
  • A substantial industry experience (strongly preferred)

While applicants may have diverse profiles, an educational or business background that reflects an understanding of and interest in hospitality and tourism management is advantageous. Students with an MBA or business experience, in particular, are preferred. Because the program is focused on graduating students qualified to teach at high-quality, research-oriented institutions, you should have good command of the English language, both spoken and written, and have a reasonable level of skill in mathematics to facilitate the mastery of research methods and statistics. You should also have competencies in hospitality and tourism management in addition to accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, operations management, and computer skills.  If you are deficient in any of these areas, additional coursework and preparation beyond the major course of study may be required. Your advisory committee will determine these requirements.

General Competency

The requirements for this program follow the Ph.D. Program in Business Administration Policies and Procedures and Program Requirements in the Carson College of Business. The concentration in Hospitality and Tourism takes advantage of existing course and seminar offerings in the other five business disciplines to offer a diverse and flexible high-quality program. The program requirements for the concentration in Hospitality and Tourism Management are designed to develop proficiency in the student’s major field of study with applications in hospitality business management.

Research tool requirements

A minimum of 4 research tool courses to be selected by the student with the approval from his/her Ph.D. committee.

  • ANOVA (e.g., Psych 511, Stat 507, Stat 512, or Soc 522)
  • Regression/Econometrics (e.g., Psych 512, Soc 521, Stat 530, Stat 533, Stat 535, EconS 511, or EconS 512)
  • Psychometric Theory (e.g., Psych 514 or Stat 520)
  • Multivariate Statistics (e.g., BA596, Mktg 594, Stat 519, MgtOp519, or MgtOp591) or Applied Structural Equation Modeling (Psych 516)

These suggested courses above may be substituted for other courses that treat each of the above topics in a comprehensive fashion, as approved by the student’s program committee. Although four research tool courses are required, additional research courses may be taken as part of the student’s supporting field requirements.

Major field requirements

These courses will enable you to develop proficiency in your primary area of study.

  • HBM 591: Seminar in Services Management

  • Mktg 593: Behavioral Research Methods Seminar
  • BA 598: Research and Professional Development Seminar (1 credit course)
  • HBM 600: Independent Study (Second-year Research Project)

Business electives

You are required to complete at least 2 of the following graduate-level business courses:

  • EconS/Fin 596 Advanced Topics in Financial Economics
  • MGTOP 516 Time Series

  • MKTG 592 Seminar in Marketing Foundations

These suggested courses above may be substituted for other courses as approved by the student’s program committee.

Supporting field requirements

Coursework in the area of specialization is intended to provide necessary skills and knowledge to conduct research in a chosen field. Courses must be related to an area of study selected by the student and approved by the doctoral student’s committee. Supporting doctoral level coursework may be selected from areas such as (but not limited to) research seminars in anthropology, psychology, sociology, economics, management, international business, information systems, marketing, communication, etc. Additional coursework in HBM may also be taken, with approval from the doctoral student’s committee.

PhD Research Credit Requirements

In addition to major field requirements, business electives, and supporting field requirements, the Ph.D. in Hospitality and Tourism Management requires additional research credits associated with the development of the final dissertation. A minimum of 32 (800 level) research credit hours is required.

Even Summer Nights Can’t Escape Egypt’s Economic Crisis

It’s so hot in Cairo that people like to go out all night. It might look like a party, but in reality, one shopkeeper said, “everybody is dead on the inside.”

A darkened market after 10 p.m. in Cairo.

By Vivian Yee

Photographs by Hadeer Mahmoud Ahmed

Reporting from Cairo

Ten p.m. arrives in Cairo’s Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood with the same dogged tenacity as it does anywhere else, but down the fluorescent shopping streets and in the sidewalk cafes, few people used to glance at the clock. It might have been near bedtime in other countries, but Cairo was practically still waking up.

That was summer in the past, season of sweat, and the city adapted its schedule. Days were for cooling inside, or at least avoiding the sun’s blitzkrieg. Nighttime offered mercy. Though the concrete sidewalks still belched up the day’s accumulated heat, the neighborhood came alive only after isha, the last of the five daily Muslim prayers. The day went on long into early morning.

Not this summer. With an energy shortage prompting the government to mandate earlier closing times , 10 p.m. now brings a dimming to Sayyida Zeinab: metal shutters are down or rolling toward the ground, turning the loudly colored, exuberantly lit storefronts to gray.

Years into an economic crunch that has left the government scrambling for dollars and made life a misery for all but the richest, Egypt is short on natural gas and funds to buy more, necessitating daily countrywide blackouts until a few weeks ago.

So, starting in July, orders came from on high: To save electricity, stores must close by 10 p.m. and cafes, restaurants and malls by midnight, slightly later on weekends. Only groceries and pharmacies are exempt.

Certificate in Health Economics & Outcomes Research

students in the library

The online 9-month, part-time health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) Certificate is tailored for individuals seeking an introduction to HEOR, including professionals in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, clinicians and other health care professionals, graduate degree holders, and graduate degree students.

HEOR has become increasingly important. Providing affordable health care while maintaining the best possible health outcomes is a challenge to all governments and health care payers. This is especially true in the United States, which spends almost twice as much per capita compared to other high-income countries yet has substantially poorer health outcomes. Major drivers of the spending gap include higher administrative costs and the higher prices of devices and pharmaceuticals in the US.

As health care becomes more complex, health care decisions can be improved by combining information from economic analyses (health economics) and vital clinical data on patients (outcomes research) to evaluate health care  value . HEOR informs health care decision-making by allowing stakeholders, especially payers, health care providers, and patients, to understand the clinical, economic, and quality of life endpoints of various treatments and health care practices. Individuals seeking an introduction to HEOR, including professionals in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, clinicians and other health care professionals, graduate degree holders, and graduate degree students, are encouraged to apply.

Benefits of the HEOR Certificate Program

  • The flexible online format is perfect for local or global participation
  • Students experience live webinars, active discussion boards and asynchronous lectures
  • Program faculty are experts in clinical investigation, clinical epidemiology, health services research, outcomes research, meta-analysis, biostatistics, drug development, and related fields.
  • No thesis is required
  • Faculty post all required reading materials on the course website, so there are no books or materials that participants need to purchase.

BHC becomes a catalyst for tourism and economic growth in Lampung

This article has been translated by PwC Indonesia as part of our Indonesia Infrastructure News Service. PwC Indonesia has not checked the accuracy of, and accepts no responsibility for the content.

Investor Daily - BHC jadi katalisator pertumbuhan pariwisata dan ekonomi Lampung

20 August 2024

Jakarta, ID - Bakauheni Harbour City (BHC), a comprehensive development project managed by PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero), is poised to become the primary catalyst in driving tourism and economic growth in Lampung. As a National Strategic Project (PSN), BHC aims to transform the Bakauheni Harbour area into an integrated tourist destination and a new economic hub that will spur regional development.

ASDP Corporate Secretary, Shelvy Arifin, stated that BHC will leverage the strategic position of Bakauheni Harbour as the main gateway between Java and Sumatra. "BHC is designed to create sustainable economic impacts, strengthen domestic tourism connectivity, and increase tourist visits," Shelvy said in a press release quoted on Monday (19/8/2024).

This project not only carries the concept of tourism development but also acts as a stimulus for the growth of various supporting sectors. With a solid integration between the tourism, harbour, and entertainment sectors, BHC is projected to provide a strong multiplier effect, creating new job opportunities and boosting both local and international investments. It is expected to transform the economic landscape of Lampung, making it more dynamic and competitive.

BHC will also prioritise the empowerment of MSMEs and local communities, as part of ASDP's efforts to ensure that the economic benefits are directly felt by local communities. "We are committed to involving small and medium enterprises as well as local communities in every phase of BHC's development. This is our way of ensuring that this project truly brings comprehensive positive impacts," added Shelvy.

Urban planning observer, Yayat Supriyatna, believes that BHC has great potential as a tourist magnet. "Intensive promotions and attractive tour packages will make BHC a prime destination for various segments of tourists, from students to civil servants," explained Yayat.

He also emphasised the importance of creating synergy between the public and private sectors to maximise BHC's potential. "Cross-sector collaboration is crucial to ensure that BHC becomes a destination capable of attracting large-scale and sustainable tourism," he said.

Data up to August 2024 shows a significant increase in the number of visitors to related tourist areas, with a total of 117,168 vehicles visiting Siger Park and 37,893 visitors at Krakatau Park. This reflects public enthusiasm for tourist destinations around BHC, indicating that Lampung has great potential for further development.

Through strong cooperation between the government, state-owned enterprises, and the community, ASDP is committed to making BHC a new tourism icon in Lampung. This project is expected to bring long-term impacts on economic development and community welfare, making Lampung a leading tourism destination in Indonesia.

Previously, State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir also expressed his support for the project. "The extraordinary potential of Bakauheni needs to be continuously developed. The investments we have made in this development require support from local governments and communities to ensure the project runs smoothly," he said recently.

Making a measurable economic impact

Press contact :.

Saeed Miganeh poses standing in a hallway. A street scene is visible through windows in the background

Previous image Next image

How do you measure the value of an economic policy? Of an aid organization’s programming? For Saeed Miganeh, who completed an  MITx MicroMasters in Data, Economics, and Development Policy and is now enrolled in MIT’s master’s program in Data, Economics, and Design of Policy (DEDP), these are key questions he is determined to answer.

“Enrolling at MIT fed my interest in investigating the political economy questions surrounding the development of African countries,” he says. “It boils down to promoting pro-poor, evidence-based policymaking in the developing world.”

Miganeh earned a bachelor of business administration from the  University of Hargeisa and completed coursework in  Open University Malaysia’s master of business administration program. Before enrolling at MIT full time, he spent 14 years as an accountant with the United Nations’  International Organization for Migration . His work with the IOM fed his curiosity about intent and impact, particularly how political agendas can affect policy adoption, how safeguarding human rights strengthens peace and prevents conflict, how climate change adaptation policies affect the poor, and how promoting intra-African trade spurs economic growth in the continent.

“My journey to DEDP began when I earned a certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation offered by the International Training Center of the  International Labour Organization ,” he recalls. “Our course coach recommended taking MITx courses, which led me to the MicroMasters program.”

Saeed grew up and completed his early education in the self-declared Republic of Somaliland during the reconstruction period after a decade-long civil war with Somalia. He was inspired by his country’s development of a functioning democracy and economy after conflict. Miganeh’s work is all the more impressive for someone who has lived almost exclusively there — with the exception of four years as a child spent in Ethiopia due to the civil war in Somalia — and whose studies have taken place entirely in the republic.

“Africa is the new battleground for fighting global poverty in the 21st century,” he says.

Practices and progress toward measurable improvement

Before pursuing graduate study at MIT, Miganeh worked in youth development programs with the  Somaliland National Youth Organization . “I was the coordinator for one of their youth networks that worked on health,” he says. “After completing my undergraduate study, I assumed the position of finance officer for the organization.”

Later during his tenure with IOM, Miganeh learned that, while the organization has a central evaluation function that evaluates projects and programs, Somaliland’s governmental institutions lacked the capacity to effectively evaluate public policies and programs effectively. His work with the IOM helped him discover the practice areas where he might benefit from partnering with others possessing expertise he’d need to make a difference. “During my work with IOM, I was involved in development projects’ administrative and accounting functions,” he remembers. “I was interested in knowing how projects were impacting beneficiaries’ lives.

Miganeh wants to dig deeper into understanding and answering developing African countries’ political economy questions, noting that “development projects can consume lots of resources from design through implementation.” Ensuring these programs’ effectiveness is crucial to maximizing their impact and societal benefit. “Every country needs to have the necessary human capital to undertake evidence-based policy design to avoid wasting resources,” he says.

He returned to Somaliland to complete a capstone project that will allow him to put his newly acquired skills and knowledge to work. The project is an important part of his master’s program. “I’m [working] with the  Somaliland Ministry of Education & Science , assisting in institutionalizing evidence-based policymaking in the education sector,”  he says.

A unique vision to drive effective change

Miganeh is already planning to use the skills he’s acquiring at MIT to facilitate change at home. “I must discover and produce policy insights using my research and, with the guidance of the top academics and professionals at MIT and other institutions, translate them into effective policies that can make a demonstrable impact,” he says.

Miganeh reports that MITx’s MicroMasters and DEDP master’s programs help students develop the unique blend of skills — including the ability to leverage data-driven insights to design, implement, and evaluate public policies that improve societal outcomes — that can help them become effective agents of social change.

“My early enthusiasm for mathematics in high school and my later work in development organizations gave me the right combination to excel in the rigorous developmental economics coursework at MIT,” he says. “Once I’ve completed the program, I will establish a consultancy to advise government agencies, nonprofits, and the private sector’s corporate social responsibility departments on designing, implementing, and evaluating policies and programs.”

Miganeh lauded the faculty and students he encountered while continuing his studies. “I have developed professionally and personally,” he reports. He saved his highest praise for the Institute, however.

“Pursuing this master’s degree at MIT, where modern economics education has been reinvented and is home to faculty including Nobel laureates and other distinguished professors and scholars, was an enriching lifetime experience, personally and professionally,” he says.

“Looking back on discussions of how to tackle the world’s development challenges is a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”

GETTYSBURG, PA –  A new National Park Service report shows that 742,000 visitors to Gettysburg National Military Park (NMP) and 98,000 visitors to Eisenhower National Historic Site (NHS) in 2023 spent $61.4 million dollars in communities near the park. That spending supported 734 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $88.5 million dollars. “I’m so proud that our parks and the stories we tell make a lasting impact on more than 300 million visitors a year,” said  National Park Service Director Chuck Sams . “And I’m just as proud to see those visitors making positive impacts of their own, by supporting local economies and jobs in every state in the country.”  “People coming to Gettysburg NMP and Eisenhower NHS also spend time in our local communities enjoying local attractions, wonderful food, and cozy accommodations,” said Superintendent Kristina Heister. “We are proud that our parks contribute so significantly to jobs and the economic sustainability of communities near the parks.” An interactive tool is available to explore visitor spending, jobs, labor income, and total economic contribution by sector for national, state, and local economies. Users can also view year-by-year trend data. The interactive tool and report are available on the NPS  website . Per Stromhaug named senior associate vice president for economic development

campus news

UBNOW STAFF

Published September 4, 2024

Per Stromhaug.

Per Stromhaug, who has guided economic development and innovation activities at Binghamton University for more than a decade, has been named senior associate vice president for economic development at UB.

The appointment was announced yesterday by Venu Govindaraju, vice president for research and economic development.

Stromhaug, who has a PhD in cell biology and an MBA, has worked at Binghamton University since 2013. He most recently served as associate vice president for innovation and economic development, a role in which he helped the university and Binghamton region become a national leader in battery innovation and manufacturing..

“We are incredibly pleased that Per has joined the University at Buffalo,” Govindaraju says. “His extensive experience in economic development and as a research scientist will help further technology commercialization and innovation throughout the region and beyond. His leadership in connecting university talent and assets to entrepreneurs, businesses and the community will be foundational to drive Western New York’s growth in artificial intelligence, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and more.”

Stromhaug, who will lead the university’s economic development strategy and initiatives, succeeds Rick Gardner, who previously held the position.

He will oversee the Business and Entrepreneur Partnerships (BEP) team, which connects companies and startups to UB resources — including world-class experts, state-of-the-art research labs and equipment, entrepreneurial programs and other support services — to help businesses grow.

The BEP team also leads UB’s technology transfer activities to license and commercialize research; it oversees the university’s incubators and early-stage startup programs and builds pathways between faculty and students to companies in the region and throughout the state to address workforce gaps.

Stromhaug will lead multiple grant-funded programs such as Cultivator, which nurtures Western New York-based startup founders in their earliest stages by providing mentorship, investments and other resources to transform their innovative ideas into viable, scalable businesses.

Stromhaug will also oversee operations and programming for UB’s Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences (CBLS), Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics (CMI) and Center for Advanced Technology in Big Data and Health Sciences (UB CAT). These programs match New York State companies with experts, wet labs, office space, shared equipment and funding sources to accelerate research and development.

“I am extremely excited to take on this role at UB,” Stromhaug says. “UB has a strong and growing research portfolio and is a national leader in multiple fields. The Business and Entrepreneur Partnerships team has done a tremendous job translating UB innovation into community benefits, and I look forward to joining the team and helping to grow economic development efforts further.”

Under Stromhaug’s leadership, Binghamton University won numerous prestigious grants, including $113 million in funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and Empire State Development for the Build Back Better Regional Challenge to start the New Energy New York initiative aimed at building a nationally leading battery innovation and manufacturing ecosystem.

His efforts also led to the university receiving $15 million — with a potential to be extended to $160 million — from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to be one of 10 inaugural Regional Innovation Engines. He also secured one of 31 national tech hub designations for the New Energy New York program, as well as $6 million from NSF’s Accelerating Research Translation program.

He led Binghamton’s Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships, which oversees numerous technology commercialization programs, including NSF’s Innovation Corps site in Binghamton, the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator in downtown Binghamton and other incubator programs.

Additionally, Stromhaug oversaw the Small Business Development Center for the Southern Tier and the Trade Assistance Adjustment Center for New York, New Jersey and Puerto Rico. He also secured Binghamton’s partnership in the University Technology Licensing Pool, the first of its kind university patent pool aimed at streamlining licensing of patents to industry.

Prior to Binghamton, Stromhaug worked for the SUNY Research Foundation, coordinating technology commercialization across the SUNY system. He also worked at the University of Missouri.

From 2003-10, Stromhaug was an assistant professor of cell biology at the University of Missouri, where he led a lab that conducted research on the molecular and cellular biology of intracellular transport and organelle biogenesis. Prior to that, he held postdoctoral positions at the University of Michigan, the University of Florida and the Norwegian Cancer Society.

He earned a BS in chemistry and biochemistry, an MS in cell biology and a PhD in cell biology, all from the University of Oslo in Norway. He earned an MBA from the University of Missouri.
