Going Global With Your PhD

Research in the field of psychological science provides many opportunities for personal and professional growth. One way to take advantage of these opportunities is to study abroad, where you can find new scientific perspectives and research methods as well as improve your career options. Leaving home is about going outside of your comfort zone and broadening your horizons, allowing you to foster knowledge of a new culture — sometimes in a new language — and forcing you to think outside the box. Working toward your doctorate in another country also allows you to build an international CV, which in turn provides more opportunities for employment, scholarships, training grants, project funding, international visibility, and business collaboration in the future.

There are, however, significant obstacles to pursuing your PhD abroad.  There are several considerations you should address before you start packing your bags:

Evaluate your stress potential:  Although individual experiences vary, composing a doctoral thesis is most often a long and time-intensive commitment. This can be even more stressful in another country, where you are far from your usual social network. There will be moments of distress, stress, and loneliness, all of which may impact your time abroad. Before you go, it is important ensure that you can manage your time well, meet deadlines, avoid procrastination, and handle frustration healthily.

Think carefully about where you want to live:  Going abroad for your PhD will allow you to experience a new culture with local practices that probably are different from your own. You will need to develop alternative ways to debate and negotiate your perspective with your advisor and other researchers, as well as get used to new rules, laws, and bureaucracy.

Start your search for the university at least 6 months in advance:   After you identified your potential research field, it is important to select institutions with doctoral programs in departments that have current professors engaged in your research topic. Ask for information about the documentation, supervisors, funding, degree requirements, and fees before you begin planning your research proposal.

Build a good relationship with your supervisor:  Although cultural differences and language barriers may complicate your relationship, it is important to make sure that your supervisor is aware of your struggles, ideas, and goals. Your supervisor should know how to manage expectations and anxiety and guide you through academic life at your new university.

Once you are accepted by a doctoral program abroad, there is still much to do. Below are some basic requirements to help with your preparations:

Academic record, resume, and personal statement:  You will need official copies of all relevant diplomas, certificates, and transcripts. If these documents are not in English, you should obtain official translated versions. You may be  required to submit your resume and a personal statement specifying your objectives and determination to do your PhD. Focus on describing your research area and how your experiences and qualifications will contribute to the field. Recommendation letters are essential and should be provided by your previous academic advisors, university tutors, or people who supervised you in a work or volunteering setting.

Proficiency language exams:  You may have to present evidence of language proficiency. The most common official language for international doctoral programs is English. If English is not your first language, you may be required to take a language proficiency exam such as the TOEFL or IELTS tests. English-speakers may also be required to take proficiency exams in other languages. Make sure that if you take an exam, it is accredited by a national authority such as a foreign office or ministry of education.

Visa: Visas typically include limits on the duration of a student’s stay. You should contact the immigration bureau of your host country and ask how you can increase your stay as well as find out which documents you need. Besides the national identification documents, the consulate may ask for travel insurance, your address abroad, justification of the trip (this can be a letter of acceptance from the university along with your airplane ticket), and a letter of economic dependence (this can be written by a relative and must be stamped in a notary’s office) or proof of means of subsis tence. Whether you receive a visa as a researcher, student, or worker may vary depending on the national legislation.

Healthcare: If you become ill in a foreign country, remember that the medicines and health services are different from those in your country. Before you leave, familiarize yourself with the private and public services of your host country and search for an international health insurance plan.

Finances: Check with your bank to learn about the best options for international transactions, especially how to avoid high costs with exchanging currencies. It is also advisable to look into how public finance and social security work in the country where you will be living. Foreign citizens may have to pay taxes based on their visa. Be prepared to have unexpected costs and issues with bureaucracy. It is also important to budget for rent, food, transportation, and overall economic conditions of the host country.

PhD funding: This is available from a range of sources, but it is important to know where to look. Consider applying for research fellowships, university scholarships, international PhD funding (e.g., Erasmus+, a European Union program that supports education, training, youth, and sport in Europe), or loans. The majority of universities have funding and bursaries available to support students; these may include merit-based academic scholarships, need-based scholarships, and international scholarships. You can sign up for PhD newsletters and PhD funding blogs (e.g., http://postgraduate-funding.com ; www.topuniversities.com ; www.phdportal.com ) to learn about opportunities. Additionally, you can support yourself by working while you pursue a PhD. This will provide an additional source of income, but be aware that it can also decrease your productivity and affect your schedule.

All the challenges you confront as you work toward a PhD in a new country help to make it worthwhile. Living abroad is a life-changing decision, but the knowledge and real-world experiences you will gain while you expand your professional network, develop friendships, and open borders into the globalized world is priceless.

Clinical Psychology degrees abroad

Clinical psychology is the process of assessing and treating patients for a range of conditions that have an affect on mental health and well-being. Clinical psychology programs are often vocational degrees that explore the treatments and support you can give patients to help with specific conditions.

Clinical Psychology program structure

Clinical psychology degrees are usually only available as postgraduate programs. Once you have a bachelor’s in psychology or a relevant major you can progress to a master’s or PhD focused on this area of health and medicine.

However, in the UK, some universities have the option of studying the subject at bachelor’s level as part of a psychology degree or as a standalone degree.

A doctorate or PhD program in clinical psychology may require you to create an extensive research paper and new contribution to the subject, extensive practical training and assessments, as well as exams.

What does it take to practice psychology abroad? Cultural competence is always in demand; educational requirements vary widely.

While American-trained psychologists tend to be in high demand for overseas academic jobs, finding work as a clinician can prove more challenging, even for natives who get their degree in the United States and want to return home to practice.

Not only do training and licensing requirements differ considerably around the world, but working in another culture or language can raise ethical challenges, says Merry Bullock, PhD, director of APA's Office of International Affairs.

"APA's multicultural guidelines, along with international guidelines, suggest that psychologists' roles in cultures or languages that they don't thoroughly know should be more training or consultation rather than direct intervention with clients," she says.

Nonetheless, because many countries lack a sufficient number of well-trained clinicians, they're recruiting psychologists, expecting that they will obtain the cultural or language training they need within a year, says Judy Hall, PhD, CEO of the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology and co-editor of "Global Promise, Quality Assurance and Accountability in Professional Psychology" (Oxford, 2008).

The key, she adds, is to thoroughly research the licensing and registration requirements in the countries you're interested in. "You can't assume that your U.S. doctorate will be sufficient," she says. "The U.S. and Canada are the only countries that require a doctoral degree to be a licensed psychologist. The rest of the world may want additional information."

Getting started

Although a doctorate is coveted in the United States, many other countries—including most in Europe—emphasize an undergraduate degree in psychology, says Hall. This can be a problem for U.S.-trained doctoral students who seek work overseas, because approximately half have undergraduate degrees in subjects other than psychology.

"My biggest piece of advice to students looking for overseas jobs is to document the equivalent of an undergraduate degree in psychology," says Hall.

But such documentation isn't a problem in countries such as New Zealand and Australia, which have a shortage of well-trained clinical psychologists. Indeed, New Zealand offers automatic licensing to job applicants with doctorates from accredited programs in the United States, says Larry Beck, a New Zealand job recruiter. And many developing countries, including India, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, have no licensing or regulation of clinical psychology.

"Anyone can [provide] counseling and psychological services, even those who had some workshops or [minimal] training in related areas," says Fatima Al-Darmaki, PhD, professor of counseling psychology at United Arab Emirates University. The profession is poorly regulated and only beginning to become established as a respected field of study, she notes.

Hall thinks that lack of regulation will quickly change, mostly because psychologists in those countries are asking for tighter restrictions to ensure quality control.

Because licensing laws, if they exist, vary so dramatically from country to country, job seekers should check guidelines through a country's psychological association. APA's Office of International Affairs maintains a list of international psychological associations at www.apa.org/international/natlorgs.html. And plans are under way to build an APA Web site that will house "The Psychologist's Map of the World," which will include information on licensing and registration requirements for a host of nations, says Bullock.

Cultural adjustments

Even if a country doesn't require a license to practice, psychologists have an ethical obligation to have the training and skills needed to provide proficient care, says Bullock. That includes being knowledgeable and sensitive to the local culture and may include speaking the local language. Although English may be the academic language in some countries, clients generally feel most comfortable discussing problems in their native tongue, says Al-Darmaki.

Psychologists can sometimes get around language barriers by finding supervisory positions at community mental health centers and hospitals, says Jui Shankar, PhD, who received her doctorate at Ball State University before returning to her native India and taking a job as a mental health coordinator for Doctors Without Borders in a remote area of northeast India. She grew up in Pune, on the west coast of India, where the culture and languages couldn't be more different. As such, she was hired to train locals to counsel people about HIV/AIDS rather than do the hands-on work herself. She's now learning the local languages and customs so she can better evaluate her staff and, eventually, do some of the counseling herself.

As with Shankar's job, there are many overseas opportunities with nongovernmental organizations, says Shankar.

"These kinds of places can absorb a lot of people with PhDs and master's degrees in psychology," says Shankar. "They work on everything from basic health care to women's issues to mental health advocacy."

The work is often in poor, underserved and sometimes dangerous areas, but it can provide excellent experience, she says. She was quickly promoted from a trainer to a mental health officer, and she now supervises counselors, conducts community-based assessments of mental health needs, oversees a program to publicize the center's services and even sees a few clients.

"It's a dream job," she says. And she's found that her training at Ball State prepared her well for the work.

That's not always the case, even for psychologists returning to their native countries. Counseling psychologist Li-Fei Wang, PhD, for example, returned to Taiwan from the University of Missouri confident in her counseling skills. "I was so naive," she admits, noting that the Taiwanese clients she saw in schools and at the National Taiwan Normal University where she is a professor, wouldn't open up as easily as their American counterparts. "They expected me to be the expert and ask all the right questions, but, culturally, they were not used to talking about their problems," she says.

She also found it critical to include parents and teachers when working with children and even young adults because of the enormous influence these authority figures have in Chinese culture. When working on career decisions with college students, for example, she not only explores their personal interests, but also their parents' expectations and how students feel about them. It took her several years to develop methods to account for the complexity of traditional Chinese interpersonal-relationship dynamics. But once she did, she found her counseling to be much more effective.

Along with adjusting to a new culture, psychologists who move from the United States to other countries need to learn to work with the health-care and insurance systems. Pay for psychologists tends to be lower outside the United States, so those who choose to work abroad often do it for the experience rather than the compensation, says Nancy Pachana, PhD, who was born and educated in the United States and is now an associate professor in psychology and the director of the university's clinical psychology training program at the University of Queensland, Australia.

Because much of the world has state-run health-care and health insurance systems that regulate salaries and services, psychologists hoping to tap into these public insurance programs need to find work in clinics, hospitals and other settings that receive compensation through them.

"In many of these countries without a licensure law, you can work in private practice even without a license, but you'll find it difficult to get paid without some form of recognition, such as chartering by the British Psychological Service," says Hall.

You will become a scientist-practitioner who understands and can implement evidence-based assessment, intervention, and consultation practice from a social justice perspective. Plus, you'll understand the history of school psychology, the impact of historical discrimination and inequity on educational and psychological functioning, and  individual differences and social/cultural influences on development and adjustment.

You'll conduct evidence-based direct counseling and mental health interventions, as well as indirect consultative interventions in applied settings. You will also be trained to carry out comprehensive psychoeducational assessments to support decision-making regarding special education eligibility and development of individual education plans (IEPs). On the research side, you'll critically evaluate research (i.e., designs, data analysis, and data interpretation) from a methodological, as well as ethical and social justice, perspective. Using research methodological skills and statistical expertise, you'll complete original dissertation research, present at psychological and educational conferences, and prepare manuscripts for publication.

Program Features

All students begin in the first year with an introductory professional orientation course, beginning research courses, pre-requisite courses that lead to a second-year school-based practicum, and engagement with the community through the completion of a school-based, pre-practicum experience.

In the second year of the program, students complete two semesters of a structured school-based practicum, in which they spend two days a week in a school setting and complete structured activities tied to the practicum, while also taking additional courses in research methods/statistics, counseling, consultation, and assessment.

In the third year of the program, students complete an advanced practicum, more advanced research courses, and work on their dissertation proposals.

In the fourth year of the program, students apply for a calendar-year-long doctoral internship through the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC), an APA-accredited doctoral internship match system for doctoral students in Health Service Psychology programs.

In the fifth year, students are required to complete a calendar-year internship under the direction of a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist.

Transfer Credit

Students with a master’s degree may be able to transfer up to 36 credit hours into the PhD program. However, a minimum of 63 credit hours and a minimum of 2 years of coursework must be completed at Loyola University Chicago.

Program Length

This is a full-time program. Students complete the course work for the program in four years, including summers. Time for degree completion, including the dissertation, is five years.

Continuous Enrollments Doctoral students in School Psychology are required to maintain continuous enrollment during their program of studies. A formal leave of absence may be granted upon request and with the approval of the Graduate School’s Associate Dean.

What is the difference between a PhD and EdS in School Psychology?

The EdS degree will allow you to be credentialed in Illinois as a licensed school psychologist through the State Board of Education and also prepares you to become a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). This credential allows you to practice as a school psychologist in the public schools. The PhD program also prepares students to become credentialed school psychologists, but additionally provides research and clinical training that allows for careers in research and University-level teaching.

Does the School Psychology PhD program prepare me for licensure?

In Illinois, the PhD degree qualifies you to become licensed as a school psychologist by the Illinois State Board of Education, which is required to work in the schools. Graduates of the PhD program are also eligible to pursue clinical licensure (as a clinical psychologist) through the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations (IDPR). In Illinois, graduates of our School Psychology PhD program meet the educational requirements to pursue their clinical psychology license, but must meet IDPR requirements for internship, postdoctoral training, and exams; each case is reviewed by IDPR. Outside of Illinois, each state has its own credentialing requirements and individuals need to check with the state in which they want to practice school psychology for the particular state's credentialing requirements.

Do I need to take any licensure examinations?

All candidates must successfully pass the Illinois State School Psychology Content Examination prior to beginning internship. All candidates must also pass the PRAXIS School Psychology Examination to obtain NCSP status (National Certified School Psychologists). For doctoral graduates pursuing their clinical license in Illinois, they must also meet IDPR exam requirements (e.g., passing the EPPP).

I have taken graduate courses at another university. Will any of these courses transfer to Loyola's School Psychology program?

Because of the rapid changes in the field of education and school psychology, courses will only be transferred to Loyola if they have been taken during the five years prior to your admittance to the school psychology program. If you do not have a master's degree, then six semester hours may be transferred. If you have a master's degree, up to 36 semester hours may be transferred into the PhD program at Loyola.

How long does it take to complete the PhD in School Psychology?

Full-time students can complete the coursework and field placements in a minimum of four years by taking courses during the summer. A full-time 12-month internship must be completed during the last year of study. All coursework and the dissertation proposal must be completed prior to beginning an internship. Completion of coursework and dissertation typically takes five years.

Can I complete the PhD in School Psychology degree by taking courses part time?

The program is full-time only and requires attendance during the summer.

Is there a residency requirement?

As full-time students, all PhD students automatically satisfy the residency requirements.

Hi all! I’m an American beginning my research on clinical psych programs, and I’m considering some international options such as Spain, Germany, and England (specifically Oxford). However, does anyone have information on how easy it is to practice with a foreign degree? I could see myself studying in Europe then returning to the US to practice or vice versa - how feasible is this? Also, if anyone knows of strong English speaking programs in Spain or Germany (I’m proficient in Spanish and conversational in German but of course I would prefer for my coursework to be in English), please let me know!

Psychology student camille chandler named beinecke scholar, the third carnegie mellon student to receive the beinecke scholarship, chandler plans to pursue graduate studies in the social sciences.

Camille Chandler is a researcher, a leader and a dancer. She is an advocate for Black success and a champion for mental health. And as a 2024 Beinecke Scholar, she is a force to be reckoned with at Carnegie Mellon University and in the greater academic sphere.

Established in 1971, the Beinecke Scholarship Program was founded to inspire and enable driven, hardworking students to pursue graduate education in the arts, humanities and social sciences. CMU nominated Chandler, a junior in the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, for this opportunity, and she was selected as one of 20 Beinecke Scholars nationwide.

“The Beinecke Scholarship is really competitive,” said Paige Zalman , associate director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholar Development . “[Receiving this award] highlights Camille’s extraordinary research accomplishments as well as her future potential as a leading scholar — but it also highlights the incredible work of the Psychology Department here at Carnegie Mellon in terms of preparing students for meaningful careers in research.”

Studying Psychology at Carnegie Mellon

Growing up in Howell, Michigan, Chandler was acutely aware of the lack of diversity surrounding her and the impact that could have on a student and their success.

“In a way [my experiences] led me to CMU. I think that because of where I grew up, people didn’t really expect that Black people could achieve very much, and so I worked really hard to get to a really good university, which is part of what led me to CMU. Being able to prove to people that I could go somewhere like CMU was a part of getting me here.” 

Once at CMU, Chandler started to realize that her experiences weren’t about proving herself to people. They were about learning what she wanted to do and how she could leverage her experiences to make a difference.

Chandler’s introduction to psychology began with taking an AP psychology course in high school. Fascinated by the study of why people behave certain ways, Chandler came to CMU thinking that she wanted to become a mental health professional. Her path took a different turn after taking two courses — the first being Grand Challenge First-Year Seminar: We're Not Beyond Race: Race and Identity in America, taught by Kody Manke-Miller , associate teaching professor of psychology and Dietrich College’s director of research on diversity, equity and inclusion, and Kevin Jarbo , assistant professor of social and decision sciences. The second course was Introduction to Social Psychology taught by Manke-Miller and Michael Trujillo , assistant professor of psychology.

Exploring Research in Social Risk-taking

The early psychology courses helped Chandler focus her research interests, coalescing at the intersection of individuals and their social environments. Her research aims to understand how these factors impact behaviors and perceptions in a social setting. She aspires to help develop beneficial interventions to center Black success.

Chandler’s research to date has focused on preferences for standards of fairness in resource allocation and how people make sense of conflicting feedback. In her studies, she and a cohort of two other students investigated the impact of social rejection on social risk-taking. The project explored the experiences of in-groups and out-groups to examine social rejection and how it impacts a person’s social risk-taking behaviors. Her investigation was a joint project in the Data-Driven Diversity (D3) Lab and the Stigma Health Equity and Resilience (SHARE) Lab . Her project was accepted as a poster presentation at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology Conference.

Securing the Beinecke Scholarship

Chandler began preparing her Beinecke application package in January with support and advising from Zalman’s office. After a competitive campus nomination process, a committee made up of staff from the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholar Development and faculty who teach in the arts, humanities and social sciences selected Chandler as CMU’s Beinecke nominee.

“What Camille brings to the table is a very strong and impressive research background that highlights how well-positioned she is to not only be successful in graduate school but also to be a leader in her field of social psychology,” said Zalman.

Chandler received the news of her selection as a Beinecke Scholar through an email, and at first, it didn’t register. Once it did, she was thrilled and surprised.

“Winning this feels like a testament to my academic self-efficacy that I’ve been working on for a while,” Chandler said.

Chandler is now beginning to work on her senior honors thesis project with Trujillo. This thesis will expand on her past studies, exploring the impact of skin tone on in-group role model effectiveness in the academic achievement of Black students.

“We’re so excited to see what she does next because it is very clear that she will have an important impact not just on Carnegie Mellon but on the future of her field and on her future students,” said Zalman.

Chandler made it clear that her support network has been essential in her academic journey and her path to earning this scholarship.

“I’m really lucky. I have a pretty good network of support at CMU that really helped me to apply for this. During the application process, Paige was so helpful — I sent her so many emails asking for feedback on everything that I was doing,” said Chandler.

As a Beinecke Scholar, Chandler will receive $5,000 just prior to starting graduate school, along with an additional $30,000 while enrolled and attending her graduate program of choice. She is still considering where to pursue her graduate studies.
