333 Informative Speech Topics To Rock Your Presentation

A powerful presentation covers a compelling topic that sparks your interest and hooks the audience. Use this master list to find your next great speech idea.

Subscribe to our weekly newsletter

You have been assigned a speech, presentation, or essay, but you have no clue what to talk about. A powerful presentation begins with a compelling topic that sparks your interest and hooks the audience. But you also need to discuss something you feel excited to research and discuss.

This guide contains 333 informative speech topics for your next presentation, plus pro tips for delivering the best presentation possible.

What Is An Informative Speech?

Informative speeches aim to teach or instruct the audience about a topic. They include objective information and fact-based research but can incorporate a unique perspective, compelling storytelling , or a powerful take-home message. Unlike a celebratory wedding toast or an inaugural speech , informative speeches are written specifically to educate.

The six key types of informative speeches are:

  • Definition speeches : This speech aims to explain a concept or theory. For example, a speech topic starting with “What is…?” is usually a definition-type informative speech.
  • Explanatory speeches : These speeches explain how something works. For example, an explanatory speech could explain how your brain processes information or how an electric car works.
  • Demonstrative speeches : These classic “how-to’s” show the audience how to perform a task and often include a visual presentation. For example, students could teach their classmates how to be more productive or cook a healthy meal.
  • Comparative speeches : When a speaker compares or contrasts two alternative things, they help the audience understand the similarities or differences between two topics. For example, a comparative speech may weigh the pros and cons of private versus public schools.
  • Descriptive speeches : This informative speech describes a person, place, or thing and explains why the subject is essential. For example, a student may teach their classmates about a historical figure, or an entrepreneur may give a descriptive speech about the specifics of their product idea.
  • Persuasive informative speeches : Although persuasive speeches are often categorized separately, some informative speeches can cross over into persuasion by using evidence to convince the audience why a particular method or perspective is better than its alternatives. For example, a salesperson may give a presentation to convince clients to buy their services, or a mental health advocate may give a speech to persuade people to do yoga more regularly.

How To Pick An Informative Speech Topic: The Five W’s

Whether you want to give a top-notch school speech assignment or a groundbreaking TED Talk , the best informative speeches have one thing in common: they deliver a purposeful message with a captivating delivery. You must understand the basic who, what, when, where, and why to pick the perfect topic.

  • Who: Before you start looking for topics, you should know who your audience is. A college speech class is a far different audience than a room of conference attendees. Consider what your audience is interested in, why they should care about your speech and their level of knowledge about the topic. If you talk about something too basic, they may be bored, but if you discuss something too technical, they may have difficulty understanding your speech.
  • What: Consider your passions and existing knowledge about a subject. The “what” of your speech is the meat of the presentation. Imagine a three-circle Venn diagram. The three circles are labeled: “things I am interested in,” “things my audience cares about,” and “things I can research.” The center point where these three circles overlap is the sweet spot for your speech topic.
  • When (Length): The length of your speech can drastically impact how in-depth you dive into the topic. A five-minute speech should cover a niche topic or a high-level concept. A thirty-minute to an hour-long presentation can teach about a more detailed topic.
  • Where: If you’re giving a speech in a meeting room at an office, your performance will likely be very different from speaking on stage in a large auditorium. Consider where you will be speaking and what kind of technology (projector, large screen, whiteboard, etc.) you will have available. The geographic location of your speech can also determine your selection of a local or regional topic relevant to the community.
  • Why: Most importantly, you should know the purpose of your speech. If your goal is to get a good grade, it may help you pay more attention to following the teacher’s rubric. If your goal is to convince the audience to make a lifestyle change or donate to an important cause, you should structure your speech with the core “why” in mind.

The best speeches combine a simple message with charismatic delivery, an easily digestible structure, and something the audience can relate to. The essence of a great speech is that it arouses something in the audience, such as the motivation to take action or to see things in a new way.

List of Informative Speech Topics: 333 Ideas to Spark Your Creativity

In an informative speech, it is essential to have plenty of evidence or data to support your claims. But even the most well-researched presentation can feel hollow without the passion for delivering it authentically.

As you explore ideas for your speech, you should naturally gravitate toward intriguing and exciting topics. Giving a speech about something you think your teacher or colleagues will like (rather than what you’re truly interested in) could ultimately be inauthentic or boring. Take note of what makes your heart beat a little faster and follow that curiosity .

Easy Informative Speech Topics

If you’re in a pinch, choose a speech topic that doesn’t require extensive explanations to get the point across. It may be a good idea to avoid anything controversial or technical. Instead, choose a straightforward demonstrative or descriptive topic with a wide range of online information.

  • How to improve your communication skills
  • The most memorable speeches in history
  • Why you should buy an electric car

Instead, try starting with:

  • A story: “I’m here for a reason. And It’s an interesting story….”
  • A big idea: “The single most important thing I want to share with you today is….”
  • A quirky one-liner or interesting fact: “You might have always thought….”

Key Takeaways: Find Inspiration for a Speech

Any informative topic can be used to craft a speech, but a showstopping presentation requires thinking outside the box and approaching your speech from a unique point of view. Before you settle on a topic for your next speech, be sure that your speech idea is:

  • Authentically interesting : Discussing something that doesn’t spark your interest is no use. Choose a topic or idea that you actually care about for an authentic and passionate delivery.
  • Relevant to your audience : If you don’t know your audience, you might as well be speaking to a wall. Professional presenters understand the general knowledge level of their audience and what information will be valuable or interesting to them.
  • Easy to research : Obscure topics can be alluring and challenging to research. Choose a topic that has plenty of information available in books or online. Be sure to use reputable sources and cite them when necessary.
  • The proper length : The depth and detail of your speech ultimately depend on the length of time you have to talk. Pick a subject that you can thoroughly describe in the allotted time frame.

Once you narrow down a few of your favorite topic ideas, start brainstorming how you want your speech to impact the audience. Use these 10 Presentation Ideas That Will Radically Improve Your Presentation Skills , such as:

  • Why you should save the best for first and last
  • How to design epic presentation slides
  • Why you shouldn’t over-rehearse
  • How to own the stage

What is a Presentation: A Brief Introduction

A Presentation is a method of conveying information, ideas, or data to an audience using visual aids and spoken words. It can be formal or informal and is used in various settings, including business meetings, educational environments, conferences, and public speaking engagements. Presenters use visual elements like slides, charts, graphs, images, and multimedia to support and enhance their spoken content. The aim is to engage the audience, communicate the message effectively, and leave a lasting impact.

The success of a Presentation hinges on the presenter’s ability to organise content coherently, engage the audience, and deliver information clearly and compellingly. Moreover, Presentation Skills are applicable to a wide range of scenarios, from business proposals and academic research to sales pitches and motivational speeches.

Advantages of Presentations

Advantages of Presentation

1) Effective Communication

One of the primary advantages of Presentations is their ability to facilitate effective communication. Whether you're addressing a small group of colleagues or a large audience at a conference, Presentations help you to convey your message clearly and succinctly. By structuring your content and using visuals, you can ensure that your key points are highlighted and easily understood by the audience.

2) Visual Appeal

"Seeing is believing," and Presentations capitalise on this aspect of human psychology. The use of visuals, such as charts, graphs, images, and videos, enhances the overall appeal of the content. These visual aids not only make the information more engaging but also help reinforce the main ideas, making the Presentation more memorable for the audience.

3) Engaging the Audience

Captivating your audience's attention is crucial for effective communication. Presentations provide ample opportunities to engage your listeners through various means. By incorporating storytelling, anecdotes, and real-life examples, you can nurture an emotional connection with your audience. Additionally, interactive elements like polls, quizzes, and group activities keep the audience actively involved throughout the Presentation.

4) Simplifying Complex Information

Complex ideas and data can often be overwhelming, making it challenging to convey them effectively. However, Presentations excel in simplifying intricate information. By simplifying complex concepts into clear and interconnected slides, you can present the information in a logical sequence, ensuring that the audience grasps the content more easily.

5) Persuasive Impact

Presentations are powerful tools for persuasion and influence. Whether you're convincing potential clients to invest in your product, advocating for a particular cause, or delivering a motivational speech, a well-crafted Presentation can sway the audience's opinions and inspire action. The combination of visual and verbal elements enables you to make a compelling case for your ideas, leaving a lasting impact on the listeners.

6) Versatility in Delivery Methods

Another advantage of Presentations lies in their flexibility and versatility in terms of delivery methods. Gone are the days when Presentations were limited to in-person meetings. Today, technology allows presenters to reach a wider audience through various platforms, including webinars, online videos, and virtual conferences. This adaptability makes Presentations an ideal choice for modern communication needs.

7) Enhanced Understanding and Retention

When information is presented in a visually appealing and structured manner, it aids in better understanding and retention. Human brains process visuals faster and more effectively than plain text, making Presentations an ideal medium for conveying complex concepts. The combination of visual elements and spoken words create a multi-sensory experience, leading to increased information retention among the audience.

8) Professionalism and Credibility

In professional settings, well-designed Presentations lend an air of credibility and professionalism to the presenter and the topic being discussed. A thoughtfully crafted Presentation shows that the presenter has put effort into preparing and organising the content, which in turn enhances the audience's trust and receptiveness to the information presented.

Disadvantages of Presentations

Disadvantages of Presentation

1) Time-consuming

Creating a compelling Presentation can be a time-consuming process. From researching and gathering relevant information to designing visually appealing slides, a significant amount of effort goes into ensuring that the content is well-structured and impactful. This time investment can be challenging, especially when presenters have tight schedules or are faced with last-minute Presentation requests.

2) Technical Glitches

Presentations heavily rely on technology, and technical glitches can quickly turn a well-prepared Presentation into a frustrating experience. Projectors may malfunction, slides might not load correctly, or audiovisual components may fail to work as expected. Dealing with such technical issues during a Presentation can disrupt the flow and distract both the presenter and the audience.

Turn raw data to actionable insights with our Data Analysis Skills Training – join us and advance your analytical abilities!

3) Overdependence on Technology

In some cases, presenters may become overly reliant on the visuals and technology, neglecting the importance of direct engagement with the audience. Overloaded slides with excessive text can make presenters read directly from the slides, undermining the personal connection and interaction with the listeners. This overdependence on technology can lead to a lack of spontaneity and authenticity during the Presentation.

4) Lack of Interactivity

Traditional Presentations, particularly those delivered in large auditoriums, may lack interactivity and real-time feedback. In comparison, modern Presentation formats can incorporate interactive elements; not all Presentations provide opportunities for audience participation or discussions. This one-sided communication can lead to reduced engagement and limited opportunities for clarifying doubts or addressing queries.

5) Public Speaking Anxiety

For many individuals, public speaking can be a nerve-wracking experience. Presenting in front of an audience, especially in formal settings, can trigger anxiety and stage fright. This anxiety may affect the presenter's delivery and confidence, impacting the overall effectiveness of the Presentation. Overcoming public speaking anxiety requires practice, self-assurance, and effective stress management techniques.

6) Not Suitable for all Topics

While Presentations are an excellent medium for conveying certain types of information, they may not be suitable for all topics. Some subjects require in-depth discussions, hands-on demonstrations, or interactive workshops, which may not align well with the traditional slide-based Presentation format. Choosing the appropriate communication method for specific topics is crucial to ensure effective knowledge transfer and engagement.

7) Accessibility Concerns

In a diverse audience, some individuals may face challenges in accessing and comprehending Presentation materials. For example, people with visual impairments may find it difficult to interpret visual elements, while those with hearing impairments may struggle to follow the spoken content without proper captions or transcripts. Addressing accessibility concerns is vital to ensure inclusivity and equal participation for all attendees.

8) Information Overload

Presentations that bombard the audience with excessive information on each slide can lead to information overload. When the audience is overwhelmed with data, they may struggle to absorb and retain the key points. Presenters should strike a balance between providing adequate information and keeping the content concise and focused.

How to Choose a Great Presentation Topic in 5 Steps

120 presentation topic ideas, 5 presentation tips.

How to Choose a Great Presentation Topic. Be novel. Begin with the end in mind.

4. Choose an appropriate presentation style.

There are many ways to present a topic. Your personality, the topic at hand, and your audience’s personas will help you determine which style would best fit you and your audience.

Select a presentation style that will communicate the main idea clearly and have a lasting impact on your audience.

For instance, explore a freeform style presenter by Sir Ken Robinson.

5. Engage with your audience.

Work on your presentation skills to make a strong connection with your audience, get through to them and leave a mark.

Think of the presenter as the link between the topic and the audience. A strong or a weak presenter can make a difference between a presentation being a thriving success or a boring failure.

Hone your skills by engaging and interacting with your audience. Make them feel like a part of the presentation and not just spectators. 70% of marketers have found presentations with interactive content to be more effective than those without.

Here are a few ways you can make your presentation interactive:

  • Start your speech with uncommon questions to your audience. Involve them from the get-go, like ask to raise their hands if X.
  • Make eye contact to build credibility and show confidence. Don’t stare at your slides or notes. Smile occasionally and talk to the audience directly.
  • Have an active and confident body language. Don’t stand in the same place the entire time. Move around the stage.
  • Don’t be monotonous. Speak as you would to a colleague — with enthusiasm.
  • Ask close-ended questions in between to keep the audience engaged without losing time. Address them using their names to keep things interesting.
  • Share personal experiences and stories that your audience will find fascinating and relatable.
  • Practice thoroughly before you present so you’re fluent with the material and delivery.
  • Energy and excitement can be quite contagious. Make sure you exude enough to spread some to your audience.

Feeling Inspired Yet?

Now you have all the right ingredients for choosing amazing topics and a hundred ideas to drive inspiration from. So, go ahead and start cooking presentations that will blow your audience away.

Don’t forget to choose a super-relevant topic and add meaty information. Do it with excitement to make it enjoyable for you and your audience. Best of luck!

Why Do Teachers Assign Student-Selected Presentations? [Infographic]

By now, you must have already chosen a presentation topic idea . But you might still be wondering why your teacher assigned you this task in the first place.

No, your teacher is not out to get you by assigning a presentation you have to choose the topic for. There are a few reasons why teachers and professors assign presentations this way.

Choosing a presentation topic idea inspires you to look inside themselves to find a topic of interest. Knowing about your interests helps give direction to your future life and career plans.

Selecting topics to present about in school also helps you learn how to do research properly. You get more familiar with the practice of taking notes, creating an outline and prioritizing information.

Brainstorming various topic ideas is also great for improving your creative performance. And finally, getting up on stage and presenting prepares you for public speaking in front of an audience.

Here's a quick infographic to sum it all up.

pros and cons presentation topics

If you're overwhelmed by all the school presentation ideas above and aren't sure which one is right for your presentation, don't worry. We have tips to help you pick the right topic in no time.

If after this process you still aren’t sure, just browse through the list above and find a specific presentation subject idea that sparks your interest most.

presentation topic ideas - choose a topic what types of books read

The first step to figuring out what your presentation should be about is to ask yourself these questions:

  • What are your hobbies?
  • What type of books do you read?
  • When you play Trivial Pursuit, which topic are you good at?
  • What kind of TV shows do you watch?
  • What would you like to learn more about?

What Are Your Hobbies?

It’s easy to find a presentation topic by looking at your hobbies. The best part of this choice is that you’ll be passionate when presenting it to your peers.

For example, if you love woodworking, create a presentation about the history of woodworking or a step-by-step look at “How to make a wooden bowl by hand.”

What Type of Books Do You Read?

When looking for innovative topics for presentation, consider the style of books you’ve been reading lately. Have any of them made an impact on your life?

If you're having a difficult time coming up with a topic idea, you can create a presentation about a book that you found really special, or about an author you’ve read a few books by.

When You Play Trivial Pursuit, Which Topic Are You Good At?

If you've ever played Trivial Pursuit or attended a Trivia Night, you must have noticed that some topics are easier for you to answer. That is your topic of interest and a great place to look for some ideas.

For example, if you always know the answer to the questions about classical music, you can create a presentation about your favorite composer.

What Kind of TV Shows Do You Watch?

What have you been binge-watching lately? Regardless if its Orange is The New Black or a documentary about the Sudanese civil war, you can find an interesting topic to work with.

It can be about history or current events. You could even do some kind of comparative analysis on how a specific show has affected you or the people who watch it.

What Would You Like to Learn More About?

Another way to find the best topics for presentation is to think of things you want to learn more about. Take the opportunity to learn something new and then share it in your presentation.

Present the facts of what you learned or turn the presentation into a journal entry of your personal experience using the new information that you just learned.

Additionally, it’s important to remember that whatever topic you choose, it must also be appropriate.

“Depending on your audience and occasion purpose, you have to steer away from topics that might bore or offend your audience.”

Once you have chosen the perfect presentation topic idea, it’s time to create your presentation. Here are some tips for putting together a great presentation that will get you a good grade.

Presentation Mistakes to Avoid

First things first, let’s talk about some presentation no-nos. You want to avoid these mistakes in any presentation you give—from a presentation for a grade in your middle school class all the way up to a business presentation.

Key presentation don’ts are:

  • Don’t create slides full of text —your presentation is not a 30-page essay. Instead, create slides with just a few bullets and some type of visual to represent your content.
  • Don’t just read off of your slides —you’ll bore your audience. Practice and rehearse your presentation or create index cards with speaking notes to make your presentation more engaging.
  • Don’t use a new design, transition, animation, etc., on each slide —you’ll clutter up your design. Choose one single design, color scheme, font pairing, transition style, animation effect, etc., and use it throughout to create a cohesive presentation design.
  • Don’t present on topics you don’t understand —you’ll sound like you don’t know what you’re talking about. Even if you’re choosing a “new to you” topic, you need to do enough research to have a firm grasp on the information you’re presenting.
  • Don’t ramble and go over your allotted time —you’ll sound flustered and unorganized. Again, make sure you practice your presentation so that you can smoothly transition from slide to slide and cover all information in the time given.

Regardless of the topic you're presenting, creating drafts shouldn't be a challenge. Utilize Visme's AI writer to generate high-quality content in seconds. Feel free to deploy it as a proofreading tool or an outline creator. Just describe what you want to write about and get content ideas or Power Point presentation topics and the tool will work out the details.

Use Data Visualization in Your Presentation

Regardless of which type of topic you’ve chosen, there’s likely some sort of data or information that would be better presented via visuals rather than written out numbers or text.

Make sure you choose a presentation tool that makes it easy to visualize certain information. For example, Visme allows you to create a number of data visualizations that help make information pop on your slide.

Some examples of data visualizations you can use within your presentation include:

  • Timelines for historical information
  • Charts and graphs for numerical data sets
  • Tables for organizing text
  • Maps for sharing geographic information
  • Flowcharts and diagrams for organizing information
  • Data widgets for visualizing standalone numbers

Avoid Using Boring Layouts

Don’t let your presentation look like a PowerPoint from the nineties with a blank white background and two columns of boring bullet points. Instead, take advantage of engaging presentation templates and spice up your slides.

First, start with a template that’s going to make your information stand out. You can browse a few options that Visme offers below. Use Visme’s Brand Wizard to automatically add your brand’s assets to your presentation.

Look for a unique way of presenting the information, use interesting backgrounds, apply shaped frames to the images, embed videos and use colorful shapes to create separations.

We already touched on how important it is to practice and rehearse your presentation. You want to appear confident and well-versed in your topic. Presenting and public speaking are also skills that you can carry into adulthood in your future career.

Although nerve-wracking, you’ll have a turn to deliver your presentation in front of the class. You’ll give your speech while simultaneously showcasing your slides.

Utilize these tips when preparing for your presentation:

  • Practice speaking while moving through your slides at least three times
  • Memorize the order of your slides and what information is on each slide
  • Create a flashcard for each slide so you have basic talking points in front of you
  • Use memorization techniques so you don’t have to fully rely on your flashcards
  • Focus on the end goal: delivering your presentation may be stressful but it will also make you feel great when you’re finished

Keep Your Audience Engaged During Your Presentation

Our last tip is to keep your audience engaged throughout your presentation. This will help your fellow classmates to better retain the information you’re sharing in your slides and can even help you feel more confident as you present.

A few tips for engaging your audience include:

  • Avoid using a monotonous tone; instead, tell stories, speak conversationally, and hold your audience’s attention
  • Try not to say things like, “um,” “er,” “like” and similar terms
  • Focus on keeping good posture throughout
  • Avoid chewing gum, fidgeting or doing other things that will detract from your speech
  • Make eye contact with your audience rather than staring at your notes or your slides

Pros and Cons List Presentation Template

Crafting an interesting pros and cons list presentation requires certain skills. We are here to help you navigate the world of professional presentations. Delving into the world of pros and cons lists, with a focus on how to improve your presentation utilizing templates.

1. Choosing the Right Template

Before developing your content, first, run a short search among possible templates, and only then select which is most suitable for your idea and imagery.  While there are many pros and cons templates available online, it’s best to choose one that helps make your arguments clearer

2. Craft a Cohesive Narrative

Your pros and cons list should tell a story, and your template can help you do so. Look for templates that enable smooth transitions from one point to another. This will help to keep a logical flow, making it easier for your audience to follow along.

3.Visuals Matter

Use your template’s visual features to highlight essential points or clarify difficult topics. Remember, graphics should enhance, not detract from, your message. Choose images, icons, and graphics that will connect with your audience and reinforce your message.

4.Don’t Overdo It with Text

Templates frequently come with plenty of text space. Be careful not to overload your presentations with text. Instead, utilize short headings and bullet points to effectively communicate your views. This will ensure that your audience is interested and focused on your topic.

5.Embrace Color Contrast

Templates frequently include predefined color schemes and layouts. Use contrasting colors to effectively emphasize your advantages and disadvantages. This will make your presentation more visually appealing and easier to understand.

6.Consider Your Audience

Customize your template to match what your audience likes and the style of your presentation. If you’re talking to a serious group, choose a simple and professional template. But if you’re speaking to a more relaxed or creative crowd, go for something more fun and eye-catching.

7.Customize Where Necessary

Finally, do not be scared to change your template to suit your demands. If any pieces do not work for you, feel free to change them or construct something from fresh. Templates are intended to help you, not limit you.

In conclusion, the quality of your pros and cons list presentation is dependent on the template you pick. You may develop an engaging and impactful presentation that effectively communicates your message by picking the correct template, crafting a cohesive story, embracing images, utilising text carefully, considering your audience, and customising as needed.

All example slides below are a part of the Pros & Cons Diagrams PowerPoint template  (see details by clicking the pictures).

Why Use Pros and Cons Diagrams in Your Presentation?

Here are the major reasons for using graphics to highlight the pros & cons:

  • Show the pluses and minuses of specific options
  • Compare the gains and losses of a proposal in the decision-making process
  • Visualize the benefits and drawbacks of the solution
  • Highlight the major advantages and disadvantages of the product, process, strategy, idea, etc.
  • Present a visual comparison of ups and downs on one slide
  • Replace ordinary tables and lists with creative diagrams

Apply Pros and Cons Diagrams Instead of Ordinary Bullet Points

Are you going to use ordinary bullet points to list the advantages or disadvantages of the discussed subject? It would be better to visualize data to make sure that your audience will not miss any critical information.

pros and cons Advantages List Infographics powerpoint

The example above demonstrates how you can transform a written list of the advantages into an eye-catching infographic. You can add different icons and short descriptions to draw your audience’s attention to small details, that matter.

Design tip: if you are going to add more icons in your presentation, remember to keep them graphically consistent. Use one style for all slides and limited set of colors – ideally based on your branding.

Looking for more list presentation ideas? See three creative ways of illustrating a list in your presentation.

Use Pros and Cons Diagrams Instead of Traditional Comparison Tables

Let’s face the truth, traditional Excel tables look pretty boring. If you want to make sure that your audience will not skip reading table information, you should pay attention to the slide design.

pros and cons creative comparison table ppt

This slide example shows how you can highlight pluses and minuses utilizing a non-standard table. We also added hand-drawn icons and elements to make the table look creative and unique. Such hand-drawn visuals can help make your presentation more impactful .

Highlight the Pros and Cons On Two Separate Slides

In case you want to discuss the advantages of the topic in more detail but don’t want to overload the slide with text, you can choose the following design. A relevant background photo and a small text section work great together. Visualization of this type makes your message clear and concise helping to retain the audience’s attention.

pros and cons advantages list powerpoint

You can also apply this design to list the disadvantages. Take a look at the following template: a high-resolution image pairs well with a short bulleted list and a few simple icons. These two slides will look great next to each other.

Put Benefits and Drawbacks On a Final Slide

If a major goal of your presentation is to focus on the advantages and disadvantages of the discussed idea, we suggest adding a pros and cons diagram for a final slide.

Take a glance at the following template, which presents benefits and drawbacks in a simple, yet effective way. The slide divided diagonally looks more creative and will suit any presentation. You can add big icons (like on the picture) to show where you stated the benefits and drawbacks.

Benefits & Drawbacks powerpoint chart

As you can see, there are a lot of unordinary Pros and Cons slide designs to choose from. You just need to select the most suitable diagram to create a killer presentation.

Don’t be afraid to experiment: you can use several slides in the same presentation. For instance, you can focus separately on benefits and drawbacks, and then sum it up with a final slide with the most essential points. Just remember about visual consistency.

Do you need to create a to-do checklist slide for the project or review a presentation? You can rearrange and reuse one of the above diagrams, e.g. a slide with a tick and cross. Here we share more ideas on creating To-Do checklists for various purposes.

Resources of Comparison Diagrams

To save you time developing such comparison graphics, we designed an editable PowerPoint template with various pros and cons slides. Go and create engaging infographics, you can check the whole collection here:

How to present pros and cons

How to present pros and cons

January 4, 2016 by Jan Schultink

A question came in on Twitter the other day:

@ideatransplant How to discuss pros and cons of 4 things? What sort of layout would you prefer? — Yoni Tantra (@yonitantra) January 3, 2016

My answer is: a simple table, like this one I prepared quickly in my presentation app SlideMagic (you can clone it to your own SlideMagic account in the presentation template file that contains on the slides I have used on this blog).

pros and cons presentation topics

The difference between a good pro/con slide and a bad one is not the design in itself, it is how your present the argument. A presentation slide is a tool to get a decision, it is not a laundry list of pros and cons that you evaluated in your analysis. Put your analysis aside, and design from a blank sheet of paper:

  • Group similar arguments together, if an argument is sort of the same, combine them
  • Sort the rows in the table in such a way that things visually line up. For example you start with rows where both options are "good" (all blues), then do the "OK/good"s, then the "OK/OK"s. etc.
  • Isolated and focus those arguments that are going to drive the decision and/or are controversial. "Option 1 is cheaper, option 2 is faster but the what will make the difference is whether we think [criterion 3] is important.
  • Cut words rigorously until you have a page that is still meaningful but does not look cluttered.

pros and cons presentation topics

People have strong opinions about almost everything, and their conflicting ideas often spark intense debates that can go on for many years and even lead to violence and war. Issues become controversial over values, different cultural norms, economic disparity, and social power relationships.

Controversial issues can be difficult to discuss, especially when they concern race, injustice, and personal freedom--which all have material or psychological consequences for marginalized groups.  Because of the stakes, there is a lot of intensity to these sources and they must be analyzed carefully.  Sometimes sources make false claims and misrepresent facts ( fake news ). Look for well-argued, well documented opinions by recognized authorities as appropriate information sources for your research paper. Examine diverse viewpoints, including those voices that have been marginalized in the past, and possibly even those voices you disagree with. Be immediately cautious of any sources that question the right of any group to life, dignity, or well-being. These are never legitimate "viewpoints."

You can strengthen your argument by evaluating sources, comparing points of view, fact checking, and understanding the motives of the writers. You can seek objectivity, but most importantly train yourself to recognize the bias in your source and whether it is appropriate for your assignment. It is equally important to use it responsibly and treat in your paper for what it is. Ask your instructor or librarian if you are not sure.

Best Pros And Cons Lists For Effective Decision-Making [With Templates]

Decisions, decisions, decisions. We make them all the time, big and small. From picking your morning coffee to making a career change, life’s a constant choose-your-own-adventure. But let’s face it, some choices can feel like climbing Mount Everest in fuzzy slippers. That’s where a pros and cons list comes in.

Ever found yourself staring at two options, each with its own set of shiny perks and potential pitfalls? You’re not alone. It can be a real head-scratcher trying to weigh everything up. A pro con list can help you sort through the chaos and make a call.

So, let’s get down to business. We’ll break down why they’re such a big deal when it comes to making choices, and show you exactly how to create your own. Plus, we’ll share some real-life examples to get your wheels turning. Let’s do this!

What Is A Pros And Cons List?

A pros and cons list is a simple but effective decision-making tool. It’s basically a way to organize your thoughts about a choice by listing the good things (pros) and bad things (cons) about each option. This helps you see the big picture and make a more informed decision.

what is a pro and con list

What Is The Difference Between Pros And Cons?

Pros are the benefits, advantages, or positive outcomes of a particular choice or decision. They’re the reasons for doing something. Cons are the drawbacks, disadvantages, or negative consequences of a choice or decision. They’re the reasons against doing something.

The Pros and Cons of a Pros and Cons List

While a pros and cons list can be a helpful starting point, it’s essential to recognize its limitations. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of using a pros and cons list:

On the plus side, pros and cons lists can provide clarity and focus. They encourage a systematic evaluation of potential outcomes, helping to reduce impulsive choices. By forcing a structured approach, they can illuminate previously overlooked factors.

However, the devil is in the details. Pros and cons lists can oversimplify complex issues, potentially leading to suboptimal decisions. They can also be biased, as we tend to weigh factors that align with our preferences more heavily. Additionally, relying solely on a list might stifle creativity and intuition, which are often vital components of effective decision-making pros and cons.

How To Create A Pros And Cons List?

Steps to create pro con

1. Define your decision

The first and foremost thing you need is to decide the thing for which you want to make a decision. If you wish to buy something, or you want to choose which strategy will work at your work. Or do you need clarification about which job offer to take? Choose the things for which you want to create the presentation.

2. Create Two columns or Tables

The next step is to create a pros and cons table or list to compare the advantages and disadvantages of the decisions. You can take a piece of paper and draw a line in the center to bisect two sides, or you can do this in MS PowerPoint . Choose Line from the Shapes option and draw a line. Label the left section as Pros and label the right section as cons.

3. Write the Pros

Now, consider the advantages you will have if you make a decision. In the Pros section on the left, list all the possible benefits or positive approaches to the decision. You can include features, advantages, and opportunities for the particular decision in this section of the pros and cons list.

4. Write the Cons

Now, consider the disadvantages of this decision. List all the drawbacks, limitations, risks, and negative approaches that might occur if you make the decision. For example, if you are buying a car, consider disadvantages like maintenance costs, value depreciation, fuel expenses, etc. Take your time and list all the potential drawbacks.

5. Assign weights for importance

You have listed all the factors, but they should have different importance. Some might be more valuable, while others can affect you minimally. That’s why it’s better to assign relative weights to each factor. For example, while choosing a job offer, you may assign higher weights to the salary and lower weights to the leave policy. These relative weights will help you make better decisions. Simile, assign negative weights to the cons.

6. Evaluate & Make a Decision

Now, evaluate all your factors. Add your relative weights and see if the overall score is positive or negative. If the score is positive, it means that making this decision might be helpful to you. Otherwise, if the score is negative, then you should consider other choices.

How To Present Pros And Cons List In PowerPoint?

A logical and standard way to draft is listing the advantages on one side and, on the other, the ideas or reasons that speak against it. Our pros and cons PowerPoint templates are perfect for weighing the positives and negatives.

The best templates deliver the information most accurately by using various eye-catching indicators, such as green and red arrow marks, to show the difference between pros and cons of a particular scenario.

Below is a stepwise guide to making a simple pros and cons list in PowerPoint:

Harris' VP options: From Josh Shapiro to Mark Kelly, sizing up the slate's pros and cons

Here's a look at 9 of harris' vice presidential prospects – and the pros and cons for each one as democrats try to maintain hold of the white house..

Democratic leaders are rallying to crown Vice President Kamala Harris their party’s 2024 presidential nominee , raising the question of whom she could choose as her running mate.

The slate of rising stars said to be in consideration for the coveted role include swing state governors, a battle-tested Biden Cabinet appointee and military veterans. One thing they'd all have in common should they become the No. 2 to the nation's first female president : They could all court pivotal blocs of voters across the country.

Who has been mentioned as possible VP candidate?

Here’s a look at nine of the top vice presidential candidates Harris is likely considering, along with the pros and cons for each as Democrats seek to hold the White House.

Andy Beshear | Pete Buttigieg | Roy Cooper | Mark Kelly | J.B. Pritzker | Cedric Richmond | Josh Shapiro | Tim Walz | Gretchen Whitmer

Andy Beshear

  • The twice-elected governor of a deep-red state, Beshear has a proven ability to garner support from a wide coalition of voters, including Trump Republicans and moderates.
  • Beshear could counter Sen. JD Vance’s rhetoric about the Appalachian region, which includes portions of Kentucky, to win over Rust Belt swing voters.
  • Beshear, 46, has bipartisan leadership credentials, having worked with a Republican Legislature to lead his state through multiple disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic, tornadoes and floods.
  • Kentucky is a Republican stronghold, and it’s unlikely Beshear would give Democrats an electoral advantage in the state.
  • Beshear has little foreign policy experience.
  • He is also relatively unvetted at the national level and is unlikely to have much name recognition among voters outside Kentucky.

Pete Buttigieg

  • Buttigieg is already a well-known Democratic figure who has experience campaigning across the country from his 2020 presidential bid and service as a Biden Cabinet member. He also served in the military and can speak to defense and international debate.
  • As the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Buttigieg can speak to the concerns of voters in Rust Belt swing states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
  • At age 42, he is the youngest contender being considered for the VP slot and is openly gay. He may be better equipped to energize core Democratic base constituencies, including LGBTQ+, millennial and Gen Z voters.
  • Buttigieg’s identity as an openly gay man could hurt Democrats' chances of wooing conservative-leaning independents, especially on a ticket with the first Black female vice president.
  • As transportation secretary, Buttigieg has faced an array of criticism, including his handling of the 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio – a disaster Vance has focused on in the Senate.
  • During his 2020 run for the Democratic presidential nomination, Buttigieg struggled to appeal to Black and Latino voters who are key parts of a Democratic path to victory in November.
  • Cooper has won six statewide elections in the key 2024 battleground state of North Carolina, including two governor's races, and could help Democrats carry the Southern swing territory.
  • Harris already has a working relationship with Cooper. They both served as their state’s respective attorney general, and Harris has described the North Carolina leader as a “dear friend.”
  • Cooper is in search of a new job. Unlike some of the other governors on the list, he is in the last year of his final term in office.
  • Cooper, 67, is one of the oldest contenders for the VP post.
  • Republicans have controlled the North Carolina Legislature since Cooper has been in power, which could make it difficult for him to claim full credit for successful policies.
  • Cooper has been criticized for dismissing charges against three Duke University lacrosse players who were accused of sexually assaulting a dancer.
  • North Carolina is in a tumultuous gubernatorial race, so Cooper may want to focus on his home state.
  • Kelly won statewide elections for the U.S. Senate seat in Arizona in 2020 in a special election to finish the term of the late Sen. John McCain and for a full term in 2022. He could give Democrats a boost in the crucial battleground state as VP nominee.
  • He has a background in military service as a naval aviator and as a former astronaut, giving him a platform to attack former President Donald Trump on claims that Trump has mocked veterans.
  • Kelly is the husband of former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, who was shot in the head during a 2011 mass casualty event at a Tucson grocery store. Their story could prove powerful as gun violence takes center stage in the 2024 election.
  • Kelly is relatively unvetted on the national stage and is not well known beyond his state.
  • He has served in the U.S. Senate only since 2020 and is among the least-experienced politicians being considered for the VP nomination.
  • Swing state Arizona would hold a special election to fill his Senate seat if Kelly is picked and Democrats win the White House in November.

J.B. Pritzker

  • His progressive record as governor of Illinois, including proposals for a $15 an hour minimum wage and legalizing recreational marijuana, could appeal to the Democratic Party’s left flank.
  • Pritzker is heir to his family's Hyatt Hotel chain and has an estimated net worth of more than $3 billion.
  • One of the most outspoken Trump critics in the Democratic Party, Pritzker isn’t shy about taking on the former president and would be expected to perform well in a debate against Vance.
  • At 59, Pritzker is the same age as Harris and could struggle to reach out to younger generations of voters.
  • Pritzker faced controversy in 2018 for removing toilets from his luxury home in Chicago to lower his property taxes.
  • Illinois is not considered a battleground state, so picking Pritzker would not help Harris carry a swing state.

Cedric Richmond

  • Richmond is a Democratic loyalist who worked in the Biden White House and chaired his campaign.
  • He has strong ties to Capitol Hill from his tenure as a congressman, which sets him apart from the governors on the list. Every vice president since 1977 has served in Congress first.
  • He knows Harris well from his time leading the Congressional Black Caucus and as co-chair of the Biden transition team.
  • Richmond does not have a large following beyond Washington, D.C.
  • He does not hail from a swing state and would not bring a new constituency of voters to the Democratic ticket.
  • Richmond has served in public office since 2000 and has no military or private industry experience. His current role at the DNC could spur rhetoric from the Trump campaign that he is part of the Washington swamp.

Josh Shapiro

  • Shapiro has the highest gubernatorial rating of any Pennsylvania governor in decades, and he could prove to be important in delivering an electoral victory for Democrats in the must-win swing state.
  • The 51-year-old has gained national name recognition for his quick response to the 2023 I-95 overpass collapse and, more recently, his leadership after the attempted assassination of Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
  • His experience as the governor of a Rust Belt state and calls for unity after the Trump rally shooting may help Democrats counter Republican messaging that the party is divisive.
  • Shapiro has led Pennsylvania for two years and is politically inexperienced on the national stage.
  • Democrats risk the chance that a Republican could take control of the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion if he is picked and goes on to win the White House.
  • Shapiro isn’t likely to excite the party’s progressive base, especially given his moderate stance on the Israel-Hamas war. Shapiro has not called for a cease-fire but has expressed support for a two-state solution.
  • Walz has served two terms as Minnesota’s governor and six terms in the U.S. Congress, giving him more nuanced leadership experience than many of the VP contenders.
  • He has spoken openly about his family’s personal experience with IVF treatments and would be a strong champion for reproductive freedom on the campaign trail.
  • Walz is a former teacher and pro-union Democrat who can speak to the concerns of blue-collar workers in Midwestern states.
  • Walz is not well known outside Minnesota, and Democrats could struggle to introduce him to the American people with just three months until the general election.
  • He received backlash for his handling of the riots across Minnesota after the murder of George Floyd and his defense of the protesters who participated.
  • Walz has remained a steadfast supporter of Israel during its war with Hamas, which might not play well with younger, more progressive voters the Harris campaign is trying to reach.

Gretchen Whitmer

  • Whitmer won reelection in Michigan by double digits in 2022 and has broad support in the crucial Midwestern swing state.
  • During her two terms as governor, Whitmer has focused on working across the aisle on issues at top of mind for Americans, including job growth, economic investment and infrastructure.
  • Whitmer is a woman and an outspoken advocate for abortion rights. She could be a strong messenger against Republican rhetoric on reproductive rights, a key issue in the 2024 campaign.
  • A woman has never won the presidency, and a two-woman presidential ticket would be unprecedented. Democrats may fear that it would push some undecided voters away.
  • Whitmer was accused of hypocrisy during the COVID-19 pandemic for traveling out of state and going to a bar while her administration encouraged people not to travel or eat out. She has since admitted she made a mistake.
  • Whitmer does not have foreign policy experience or background working with the deeply divided U.S. Congress.

The Pros And Cons Of PowerPoint Presentations

PowerPoint presentations are an excellent way to deliver information, but they aren't for every type of presentation.

Here are the pros and cons of PowerPoint:

Pro: PowerPoint gives you a lot of freedom to personalize a presentation. You can change the font, color scheme and design. You can add images and video clips, create cool animations and use transitions between slides. It's easy to add hyperlinks that link to websites or other documents. And you can customize the template so it looks professional and consistent with your brand identity.

Con: They can be boring

PowerPoint presentations are often tedious and boring to watch. The slides are usually full of text and bullet points, which can make them hard to read and even harder to understand.

Pro: PowerPoint presentations are easy to edit after they're created because they're basically just text with graphics attached — no audio or video files involved! This makes them easy to upload onto websites such as SlideShare and SlideShare where anyone can view them without having to download anything first.

Con: They take time to prepare

Preparing a PowerPoint presentation takes time, especially if you want to create something that looks professional. This is because it involves creating graphics and formatting the text according to your requirements. It also means that you need to spend more time preparing your slides than actually giving your presentation itself!

CONCLUSION: If you can learn to use PowerPoint effectively it will have much more value and purpose in your business life. If you are going to give a sales pitch, then PowerPoint can help you out, but be careful of going too crazy with the decorations and special effects. Keep it simple and professional, and include extra visuals like graphs to help people understand things better.

Avoid These 3 Pitfalls When Giving a Sales Presentation

  • Terri L. Sjodin

pros and cons presentation topics

Lessons from a study of almost 5,000 sales professionals.

A study examined the habits of almost 5,000 sales professionals whose livelihoods depend on their ability to build and deliver persuasive presentations. The findings revealed 12 common mistakes that were consistently self-reported among respondents. Here are the top three to avoid when giving a sales presentation: being overly informative vs. persuasive, failing to close, and “winging it.”

When you work in sales, no business skill is more essential than effective communication. This is especially true when it comes to giving presentations, whether you are presenting in person, over the telephone, or via a videoconferencing platform. Getting to the point, connecting with others quickly, and making a strong pitch can be the difference between moving a transaction forward or losing an opportunity.

Biden Calls for Supreme Court Reforms–But Are There Better Options?

Biden Calls for Supreme Court Reforms—but Are There Better Options?

Bu law’s jed shugerman analyzes the pros and cons of biden’s proposals, molly callahan.

Warning that the US courts were being weaponized as part of an “extreme” conservative agenda, President Joe Biden on Monday called for two major Supreme Court reforms, and proposed a constitutional amendment that would rein in a president’s immunity—moves that were widely viewed as an effort to button up his 50-year legislative legacy in public office.

Biden spoke Monday at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum in Austin, Tex., in his first public event since announcing he would not continue his run for another term in office .

Prior to his remarks, the president outlined his reforms to rebalance the courts and rein in presidential immunity in an op-ed for the Washington Post . The Supreme Court has been besieged by scandal in recent years, eroding public trust in the institution. And, in early July, the court drastically expanded the notion of presidential immunity to include almost anything a president does while in office—a move many legal and constitutional scholars viewed as far outside the bounds of legal precedent.

First, Biden called in the op-ed for a constitutional amendment that “would make clear that there is no immunity for crimes a former president committed while in office.”Second, he suggested that there be term limits for Supreme Court justices, recommending that the nine justices be held to 18-year terms, so presidents would nominate a new justice every two years.

Finally, he called for a binding code of ethics for members of the high court; something that would require justices “to disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have financial or other conflicts of interest.”Vice President Kamala Harris, who has emerged as the likely Democratic presidential nominee since Biden dropped out of the race, said she supports his reforms .

All three of these proposals would need congressional support, and a constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds vote of both houses in Congress and support from three-quarters of the states. Biden’s now lame-duck presidency, coupled with a split Congress and a deeply divided nation, makes the passage of any of these reforms highly unlikely.  BU Today spoke with Jed Shugerman , Boston University law professor and Joseph Lipsitt Scholar in the School of Law, about these proposals and what they represent for US politics.

with Jed Shugerman

Bu today: biden is calling for three major reforms to the court (and the constitution). let’s take them one by one. first, he’s calling for a constitutional amendment that would “make clear that there is no immunity for crimes a former president committed while in office,” he writes in his washington post op-ed. how likely is it that he could pass such an amendment in what is now a lame-duck presidency with a divided congress.

Shugerman: A zero chance before the election. A constitutional amendment requires two-thirds of each house and three-quarters of the states. If the Democrats win the House and keep the Senate, and if Vice President Harris wins the presidency, there is a small chance of a coalition of Democrats, Republicans who are eager to turn the page from Trumpism, and Republicans eager to keep criminal checks on the next president. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

BU Today: If it did pass (and that’s a big if ), what would it actually change? Would it have the effect Biden presumes it would (i.e., “that the president’s power is limited, not absolute”)?

Shugerman: We have had 234 years without presidential immunity. The change was in July with the decision in Trump v. United States . If Trump wins in November, he can stop the federal prosecutions, and the courts will protect him from the remaining Fulton County prosecution. If he loses, the federal courts will have to navigate the immunity decision, because any amendment will take too long to be ratified. But after that, we will return to the workable status quo ante: no presidential immunity. And that is consistent with the Framers having rejected monarchy and presidential immunity—the historical evidence against presidential immunity is overwhelming, which belies the Roberts Court’s conservatives claiming to be “originalists.”

BU Today: Second, Biden is calling for term limits for Supreme Court justices. He’s been careful not to say that the term limits should be codified by statute, instead keeping his support vague. Does that matter?

Shugerman: Biden’s op-ed in the Washington Post and the White House press release did not specify if they supported a constitutional amendment or a statute, which is wise. Many scholars agree that any term limit on Supreme Court justices would require a constitutional amendment, because the Constitution guarantees them tenure “during good Behaviour.” In my research on the history of good behavior, summarized in my thread yesterday , the Framers—both supporters of judicial independence and its critics—thought the meaning of good behavior was obvious: tenure for life, with impeachment for misbehavior as the only limit. Many non-originalist scholars disagree, but no matter who is right, the Supreme Court would strike down any statute imposing term limits—and it could do it immediately, similarly to how it has misused history to strike down more limited “good cause” protections for independent agencies. It is a good strategy to run against the Roberts Court, but the strategy could backfire if the campaign [for reform] seems to flout the Constitution and the rule of law.

BU Today: How would the US enforce term limits on Supreme Court justices, if there were to be limits?

If the term limits are only by statute, the Supreme Court would strike them down immediately, and maybe by a vote of 9-0. If the term limits are imposed by constitutional amendment, then they would work like six-year terms for Senators, two-year terms for members of the House, and term limits for presidents. At the end of 18 years, the justice is no longer a justice, and the president and Senate could have a new appointee ready to start that same day. Of course, political actors could always refuse to comply with the law, and we have recently seen a loser of a presidential election try to cheat his way past an election and the end of a term. The political system worked well enough in January 2021 to withstand that attack, but a month later, the Senate failed to convict and disqualify, and here we are in 2024. We can’t take it for granted that our national political culture will demand the enforcement of constitutional law and basic democratic norms.

BU Today: Would the rolling two-year appointment schedule help to balance out the court, the way Biden suggests it would?

This two-year schedule is the best part of the proposal, but it is imperfect. Supreme Court justices have been timing their retirements for their partisan or ideological commitments: as justices approach retirement age, conservative justices wait for a Republican president, and liberal justices wait for a Democratic president. Conservative justices have been better at this timing.  Justice O’Connor reportedly said on election night 2000, when it appeared Vice President Gore would defeat then-Governor George W. Bush, “Oh no, now I can’t retire.” A month later, she was the fifth vote in Bush v. Gore . She didn’t retire in those four years, probably because of the cloud of Bush v. Gore , but soon after Bush won reelection, she retired. Justice Kennedy similarly retired after he received signals or assurances from the Trump administration. On the other hand, health is unpredictable, and a sudden death during an election year can hyper-politicize a presidential election. See Justices Scalia and Ginsburg.

BU Today: Is there a better schedule or cadence for appointing justices?

Eighteen-year term limits mean that every president gets two regular 18-year appointments. However, what if a Senate blocks a president from appointing one or both seats? Then we’re back to 2016, when President Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland, and Senator McConnell (R-Ky.) and the Senate Republicans kept Scalia’s seat open past through the election. Could an obstructionist Senate block both appointments over four years, so that the next president would have those two open seats plus two more regular appointments? The better solution is to pass a statute that makes each current justice’s seat their own seat, and that seat expires at their retirement or death. Then every president gets a new appointment every two years. If the president and Senate cannot agree on an appointment in those two years, that opening expires—no reward for obstructionism. Over the next 20 years, the court would very gradually expand, probably to 12 or 13, as 10 new seats open—but some of them likely go unfilled due to partisan disagreement, and some of the more recently appointed justices remain on the court. This is not “court-packing,” because it is so incremental and equal opportunity for both parties to win presidential elections and take advantage of the regular appointment schedule, two per presidency. This proposal addresses the real problem, the Supreme Court’s far-right 6-3 personnel, and it does it more immediately, but also moderately and more valid constitutionally than term limits. But the Democrats probably understand that any form of court expansion would be misportrayed or misunderstood, and that political risk in 2024 may be greater than the reward.

BU Today: Third, Biden is calling for a “binding code of conduct” for the Supreme Court. What might that look like? Are there examples in other levels of the court system that could be applied at the scale of the Supreme Court? And would it really help?

We’re not sure what a “binding code of conduct” means. Generally, the lower federal courts and state courts have a process for parties and citizens to file judicial ethics complaints, and the judges enforce those ethics codes on each other. For example, if a trial or lower appellate judge has an alleged conflict of interest or an alleged appearance of bias, but refuses to recuse, then appellate judges can hear the legal complaint and can use “disqualification,” the appellate form of forcing a lower court judge to recuse. The Supreme Court adopted a more voluntary “code” last winter, but it has no provision for parties or citizens to bring a judicial ethics complaint against them, and there is no disqualification provision. The justices only self-enforce. Over 50 years ago, when President Lyndon Johnson nominated Justice Abe Fortas to be chief, a financial scandal and an appearance of impropriety led to self-enforcement: Fortas withdrew from the nomination and also resigned entirely.  That self-enforcement is unimaginable now, as Justice Thomas’ wife allegedly was involved in a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, and both Justices Thomas and Alito face significant questions about receiving massive gifts from billionaires, among other concerns about extreme political symbolic statements. The better approach is to change the anti-corruption laws to make it a crime for judges to receive significant gifts, without having to prove bribery. Then a justice could be convicted of a crime. This federal law would require a federal prosecutor and a unanimous jury. The law should be explicit that state prosecutors have no jurisdiction to enforce these criminal prohibitions.

There are 7 comments on Biden Calls for Supreme Court Reforms–But Are There Better Options?

Well written. I enjoyed reading it.

This knee-jerk initiative spawned by the President and Democrats has absolutely nothing to with “reforms”, it is simply about outcomes and a desire to sway them to a particular ideology. They didn’t like the decisions, so they set about changing the rules.

If this were a liberal leaning court (and there have been plenty in the past as proof), not a single constituency currently calling for reforms would have any issue with its composition, lifetime appointments or ethics codes.

Results are all that matter.

Absolutely how can that not be obvious to everyone. 234 years has worked it is actually very upsetting it supports idea of political weapon issues of lower courts

“The Supreme Court has been besieged by scandal in recent years” – meaning that it has made more some more conservative rulings recently.

No one called to “reforming the supreme court” after Obergefell v. Hodges, King v. Burwell, Bostock v. Clayton County, or NFIB v. Sebelius, all of which were fundamental decisions with liberal leanings.

Biden’s latest move is just yet another partisan bully tactic attempting to limit the independence of the judiciary, and it should be fought by anyone who respects the law, regardless of their political persuasion.

You don’t think McConnel hijacking the vacancy left by Scalia and then ramrodding in another justice just as the election was about to happen right after Ginsburg died isn’t “reforming the court”? The Right played a gross form of politics to get their way and Alito and Thomas are clearly ethically compromised. Yes, the left is unhappy but everyone should be. The last great governmental body is morally corrupt and built on lies. Change needs to happen.

As for term limits, they are needed in ALL forms of government. Graham, Pelosi, McConnel, Schumer…..they all need to go.

Judicial sortition would be a better way to select justices and other federal judges. Removes the influence of the executive and legislative branch entirely.

Political parties never put democracy first. Instead they are driven by self-interest. Both parties supported abolishing the Electoral College at various moments based on sound democratic arguments, but quickly forgot those promises when the electoral winds blew in their favor.

After analyzing various proposals for court expansions and term limits, I prefer 14 justices and random retirement inspired by Ancient Greek democratic sortition- harder to game and less political.

The Pros and Cons of Renting Out Properties The City Girl Savings Podcast

The rise of real estate investing in social media has been a popular topic of conversation…and for good reason. There are a lot of amazing things that can come from real estate investing. There’s a lot of work that goes into it as well. My brother and I have been managing rental properties since 2015. For me, the goal is to build out a rental property portfolio. In this episode, I’m sharing my personal experiences with renting out properties and the pros and cons of doing so. If you’re interested in real estate investing, hopefully this episode sheds some light into the things you should think about when moving forward.   Here's a glance at this episode: [02:01] Raya shares how she and her brother had to assume a mortgage for a property inherited from their dad. [05:13] A second property rented out belonged to her mom and it also had a mortgage on it when being rented out.  [11:40] Biggest pro for rental income is monthly cash flow. Monthly rent payments should cover any costs and leave you with profit. [14:44] It can cost a lot of money to “fix up” a property. Work with someone who can help you identify the most important things that need to be fixed. [17:55] Raya rents a property with a pool, which could lead to extra liability. Raya shares how she works through this.   Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? Are you a fan of the City Girl Savings podcast? If so, please consider rating and reviewing the show!
