இங்க நான் தான் கிங்கு Review: சந்தானத்தின் சிரிப்பூட்டும் ‘முயற்சி’ எப்படி?

கடன் வாங்கி, அதை அடைக்கத் தவிக்கும் ஒருவரின் வாழ்க்கையில் ஏற்படும் பிரச்சினைகளை நகைச்சுவையுடன் சொல்லும் முயற்சியே படத்தின் ஒன்லைன்.

90’ஸ் கிட்டான வெற்றிவேல் (சந்தானம்) திருமணத்துக்காக வரன் தேடி அலைய, சொந்த வீடு இருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற கன்டிஷனால் ரூ.25 லட்சத்துக்கு கடன் வாங்கி வீடு கட்டுகிறார். தனக்கு இருக்கும் கடனை அடைக்க முன்வரும் பெண்ணை தேடி திருமணம் செய்ய தேடி அலையும் அவருக்கு, ஜமீன் குடும்பத்தில் வரன் அமைய, திருமணமும் நடக்கிறது. ஆனால் அதில் ஒரு ட்விஸ்ட்.

இதற்கு மறுபுறம் சென்னையில் குண்டுவெடிப்பை நிகழ்த்த தீவிரவாதிகள் கூட்டம் சதித்திட்டம் தீட்டுகிறது. அந்தக் கூட்டத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒருவர் வெற்றிவேல் குடும்பத்தில் சிக்கி கொள்ள திரும்பங்கள் நிகழ்கின்றன. இறுதியில் வெற்றிவேல் தன்னுடைய கடனை அடைத்தாரா? சென்னையில் குண்டு வெடித்ததா? - இப்படி இரு வேறு கதைகளை முடிச்சுப்போட்டு சொல்லியிருக்கும் படம்தான் ‘இங்க நான் தான் கிங்கு’.

வரன் தேடி அலைவது, ஜமீன் வீடு பில்டப், அதையொட்டி நிகழும் ஏமாற்றம், தொடர்ந்து சில திருப்பங்கள் என நகரும் இடைவேளைக்கு முன்பான காட்சிகள் சந்தானத்தின் ஒன்லைனர்களால் புன்முறுவலுக்கு இடமளித்து நகர்கிறது. இடையில் சென்டிமென்ட் காட்சிகள் கதையுடன் ஒட்டாமலும், சந்தானத்துக்கு பொருந்தாமலும், துருத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

இயக்குநர் ஆனந்த் நாராயணன், எழுத்தாளர் எழிச்சூர் அரவிந்தனின் கூட்டு முயற்சியின் சில ஐடியாக்கள் ரசிக்க வைக்கின்றன. குறிப்பாக, மனோபாலாவின் ‘விக்ரம்’ ஸ்பூஃப் காட்சி, ரோலக்ஸ் பெயர் கொண்ட மாறன் கதாபாத்திரம், தம்பி ராமையா ‘ஜெய்ஹிந்த்’ என சொல்லும்போது, ‘உன் சம்மந்தி மாதிரி பண்றியா’ என நிஜ சம்பவங்களையும், விவேக் பிரச்சன்னாவிடம், ‘உனக்கு யார்ரா டுயல் ரோல் கொடுத்தா’ போன்ற நம்மூடைய மைண்ட் வாய்ஸையும் கோர்த்திருப்பது பார்வையாளர்களை கவர்கிறது.

ஆனால் ‘டபரா மூஞ்சி’ போன்ற பிறரை புண்படுத்தும்படியான ‘உருவகேலி’யை காமெடி என நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் சந்தானம் ‘ஏஐ’ காலத்திலும் அதை இறுகப்பற்றிக் கொண்டிருப்பது அவரின் முதிர்ச்சியின்மையை காட்டுகிறது.

மேற்கண்ட சில சுவாரஸ்யமான ஐடியாக்களையும், ஒன்லைனர்களையும் தாண்டி படம் எங்குமே சோபிக்கவில்லை. நகைச்சுவையைக்கூட கணிக்கும் அளவுக்கு அவுட்டேட்டான இடங்கள், தீவிரவாதி என சொல்லப்படும் கூட்டத்தை லோக்கல் ரவுடிகளைப் போல் டீல் செய்வது, டம்மி காவல் துறை, கிஞ்சித்தும் இல்லாத லாஜிக்குகள், தேவையில்லாத குண்டுவெடிப்பு ட்ராக், திணிக்கப்பட்ட பாடல்கள் என பல இடங்கள் சோதிக்கவே செய்கின்றன.

சந்தானம் தனது வழக்கமான நடிப்பால் மொத்தப் படத்தையும் தாங்குகிறார். தம்பி ராமையா, பால சரவணனிடம் மாட்டிக்கொண்டு அவர் முழிக்கும் இடங்களில் உடல்மொழியால் கலகலப்பூட்டுகிறார். அறிமுக நடிகை பிரியாலயா கொடுத்ததை சிறப்பாக கையாண்டிருக்கிறார். தம்பி ராமையா, பால சரவணன், விவேக் பிரசன்னா, முனிஷ் காந்த், லொள்ளுசபா மாறன், மனோபாலா, சேஷூ, கூல் சுரேஷ் ஆகியோர் தேர்ந்த நடிப்பில் கவனம் பெறுகின்றனர். யூடியூபர்கள், இன்ஃபுளூவன்சர்களை படத்தில் கொண்டுவந்திருப்பது வரவேற்கத்தக்கது.

பழைய டி.இமானை ‘மாயோனே’ பாடலின் வழியே பார்ப்பது மகிழ்ச்சி. மற்ற பாடல்கள் பெரிய அளவில் ஈர்ப்பை கொடுக்கவில்லை என்றாலும், பின்னணி இசையில், வைரல் வசனங்களை வைத்து புதுமை ஒன்றை படைத்திருக்கிறார். ஓம் பிரகாஷின் ஒளிப்பதிவு குவாலிட்டி. தியாகராஜனின் படத்தொகுப்பில் கறார் காட்டியிருக்கலாம்.

மொத்தமாக சில காட்சிகளையும், காமெடியையும் ரசிக்க பல இடங்களில் பொறுமை காக்க முடியுமானால் ‘நீங்கள் தான் கிங்கு’.

தயாரிப்பு - கோபுரம் பிலிம்ஸ் இயக்கம் - ஆனந்த் நாராயணன் இசை - டி இமான் நடிப்பு - சந்தானம், பிரியலயா, தம்பி ராமையா வெளியான தேதி - 17 மே 2024 நேரம் - 2 மணி நேரம் 12 நிமிடம் ரேட்டிங் - 3/5 நகைச்சுவைப் படங்கள் எடுப்பது என்பது சாதாரணமானது அல்ல. படம் முழுவதும் இரண்டு மணி நேரம் அல்லது இரண்டரை மணி நேரம் சிரிக்க வைத்தால் மட்டுமே அப்படியான படங்கள் ஓடும். தொடர்ந்து நகைச்சுவைப் படங்களைத் தவிர வேறு படங்களில் நடிக்காத சந்தானம் இப்படியான படங்களைக் கொடுப்பது பெரிய விஷயம்தான். புதிய கூட்டணியான இயக்குனர் ஆனந்த் நாராயணன், சந்தானம் ஒரு சிம்பிளான கதையை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு இரண்டு மணி நேரமும் நம்மை சிரிக்க வைத்துவிடுகிறார்கள். எந்த ஒரு லாஜிக்கையும் நீங்கள் பார்க்காமல் இருந்தால் சிரித்துவிட்டு வரலாம்.

சென்னையில் வெடிகுண்டு வைப்பதற்காக தீவிரவாத கும்பல் திட்டமிடுகிறது. குண்டு வைக்க வந்த தீவிரவாதியான விவேக் பிரசன்னா, சந்தானத்தின் வீட்டில் கரண்ட் ஷாக் அடித்து சந்தானம் குடும்பத்தினரால் காப்பாற்ற முயற்சிக்கப்பட்டு கொல்லப்படுகிறார். எப்படியாவது பிணத்தை அகற்ற திட்டமிட்டு அதைச் செய்துவிட்டு வீடு திரும்புகிறார்கள். வீட்டிற்குள் விவேக் பிரசன்னா உயிரோடு உட்கார்ந்து இருக்கிறார். அப்போது டிவியில் தீவிரவாதியான விவேக் பிரசன்னா பற்றிய செய்தி வருகிறது. அவரை பிடித்துக் கொடுத்தால் 50 லட்சம் பரிசு என்று காவல் துறை அறிவிப்பு செய்கிறது. உயிரோடு இருக்கும் விவேக் பிரசன்னா, சந்தானத்தின் நண்பர். 50 லட்சம் பணத்திற்காக தீவிரவாதி விவேக் பிரசன்னா பிணத்தை ஹாஸ்பிடலலிருந்து கடத்தி போலீசிடம் கொடுக்க சந்தானம் திட்டமிடுகிறார். இதன்பின் என்ன நடக்கிறது என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. ஒரு பிணத்தை மையமாக வைத்து படம் முழுவதையும் நகர்த்தியிருக்கிறார்கள். இதற்கு முன்பும் இப்படி சில படங்கள் வந்திருப்பதால் அந்தப் படங்களைப் பற்றியும் வசனத்தில் குறிப்பிட்டு அந்தப் படங்கள் போல இந்தப் படமல்ல என சொல்லிவிடுகிறார்கள். படத்தின் முதல் பாதி போவதே தெரியவில்லை, ஆனால், இரண்டாம் பாதி மட்டும் தட்டுத் தடுமாறி நகர்கிறது. சந்தானம் வழக்கம் போல காமெடிக்கு உத்தரவாதம் தந்துவிடுகிறார். அதே ஒன் லைன் நகைச்சுவையை படம் முழுவதும் தந்திருப்பதால் ரசிக்க முடிகிறது. ஆரம்பத்தில் பெண் பார்க்கும் படலம் என கொஞ்சம் 'டிராமா' போடுகிறார்கள். சந்தானத்திற்கு ஒரு அருமையான டூயட்டையும் வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். கொஞ்சம் காதல், நிறைய காமெடி என காமெடியில் கிங்குதான் என நிரூபித்திருக்கிறார் சந்தானம். சந்தானத்தின் ஜோடியாக பிரியலயா. ஒரு டூயட்டைத் தவிர அவருக்கு சொல்லிக் கொள்ளும்படியான வேடமில்லை. முகம் கூட மனதில் பதிய மறுக்கிறது. அவருக்கென கொஞ்சம் 'ஸ்பேஸ்' கொடுத்திருக்கலாம். தம்பி ராமையா தேவையில்லாமல் கூச்சல் போட்டு நடிப்பதை எப்போது நிறுத்துவார் எனத் தெரியவில்லை. தான் நடிப்பது 'டிராமா' அல்ல, 'சினிமா' என யாராவது அவரிடம் சொன்னால் நன்றாக இருக்கும். சந்தானத்தின் மச்சானாக பால சரவணன். சந்தானத்துடன் புதிதாக கூட்டணி சேர்த்திருக்கிறார். தனது பங்கிற்கு அவரும் சிரிக்க வைத்திருக்கிறார். சந்தானத்தின் நண்பன், வெடிகுண்டு வைக்க வந்த தீவிரவாதி என இரண்டு வேடங்களில் விவேக் பிரசன்னா. பிணங்களை வைத்து பிழைப்பு நடத்தும் திருட்டுப் பேர்வழியாக முனிஷ்காந்த். மாறன், சுவாமிநாதன், சேஷு என சந்தானத்தின் கம்பெனி ஆர்ட்டிஸ்ட்களும் படத்தில் உண்டு. மாறனை சரியாகப் பயன்படுத்தவில்லை. சந்தானம், பிரியலயா பாடும் டூயட் பாடலான 'மாயோனோ' பாடல், வேறு ஹீரோவுக்காகப் போட வேண்டிய பாடல். சந்தானத்திற்குப் போட்டு அழகு பார்த்திருக்கிறார்கள். இமான் இசையில் பாடல்களும், பின்னணி இசையும் ஓகே. வெடிகுண்டு வைப்பது எல்லாம் 'அவுட்டேட்டட்' சினிமாவாகிவிட்டது. படத்தில் லாஜிக்கை எந்த இடத்திலும் பார்க்கக் கூடாது. ஒரு ஹாஸ்பிட்டலில் இருந்து பிணத்தையே கடத்துகிறார்கள். அங்கு சிசிடிவி எல்லாம் இல்லவே இல்லை. பிணத்துடன் செல்லும் வண்டியை போலீசார் ஒரு இடத்தில் கூட சோதனை செய்யவில்லை. கிளைமாக்சில் திடீரென ஆக்ஷன் ஹீரோவாகி சண்டை போடுகிறார் சந்தானம். இப்படி எந்த கேள்விகள் எழுந்தாலும் அவற்றையெல்லாம் தள்ளி வைத்துவிட்டு தமாஷாய் சிரித்துவிட்டு வரலாம். இங்க நான்தான் கிங்கு - காமெடியில்…

Inga Naan Thaan Kingu Review: காமெடியில் சாதிக்கும் சந்தானம் & கோ; படமாக க்ளிக் ஆகிறதா?

தொடக்கம் முதலே அடுக்கடுக்காக காமெடிகள் வந்தாலும், அவை கதையை ஒரே இடத்தில் நிறுத்தி வைக்காமல் திரைக்கதையைச் சுவாரஸ்யமாக நகர்த்திக்கொண்டே இருக்கின்றன.

திருமணத் தகவல் மையத்தில் வேலை பார்க்கும் வெற்றி (சந்தானம்), சொந்தமாக ஒரு அடுக்குமாடிக் குடியிருப்பு வீடு வாங்கியதில் 25 லட்ச ரூபாய் கடனில் உள்ளார். ஆதரவற்றவரான அவரை மணந்துகொள்ளப் பெண்ணையும் கடனை அடைக்க 25 லட்சம் வரதட்சணையும் தரும் வரனைத் தேடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். ஒரு கட்டத்தில் ரத்னபுரி ஜமீனான விஜய்குமார் (தம்பி ராமையா) தன் மகளான தேன்மொழியை (பிரியாலயா) வெற்றிக்குத் திருமணம் செய்து வைக்கிறார். ஆனால், திருமணத்துக்குப் பிறகுதான் அக்குடும்பமே ஏற்கெனவே கடனிலுள்ள குடும்பம் என்பது வெற்றிக்குத் தெரிய வருகிறது. தேன்மொழியோடு, ஜமீன் விஜய்குமாரும் அவரது மகன் பாலாவும் (பால சரவணன்) வெற்றியின் வீட்டில் 'வீட்டோடு மாமனார், மச்சானாக' குடியேறுகிறார்கள்.

இந்தக் கலாட்டா குடும்பத்தால் மிகப்பெரிய பிரச்னை ஒன்றில் மாட்டிக்கொள்ளும் வெற்றி, அப்பிரச்னையை இதே குடும்பத்தை வைத்து எப்படிச் சரி செய்கிறார் என்பதை காமெடி கதகளியாகச் சொல்கிறது இயக்குநர் ஆனந்த் நாராயணின் `இங்க நான் தான் கிங்கு'.

ஆக்‌ஷன், காமெடி, காதல், நடனம் என எல்லாவற்றையும் அளவாகத் தொட்டுச் செல்லும் வெற்றி கதாபாத்திரத்தை, தன்னுடைய கூலான ஸ்டைலில் குறைவின்றி செய்திருக்கிறார் சந்தானம். முக்கியமாக, ஒன்லைன் கவுன்ட்டர்கள் அடிக்கும் இடங்களில் படத்திற்கு வலுசேர்த்திருக்கிறார். கதாநாயகி பிரியாலயா கொடுத்த வேலையை மட்டும் செய்திருக்கிறார். கதாநாயகனுக்கு அடுத்தபடியாக கைதட்டல் வாங்கும் தம்பி ராமையா, தனது அப்பாவித்தனமான காமெடிகளாலும் 'அடப்பாவி' தனமான தொந்தரவுகளாலும் சிரிக்க வைக்கிறார். சில இடங்களில் ஓவர் டோஸாக இருந்தாலும், அது குறையாகத் தெரியவில்லை.

டெரராகவும், காமெடியாகவும் மாறி மாறிப் பயணிக்கும் கதாபாத்திரத்தில்(ங்களில்) தேவையான பங்களிப்பை அளித்திருக்கிறார் விவேக் பிரசன்னா. பிணமாக அவரின் நடிப்பு அட்டகாசம்! பால சரவணன், முனீஸ்காந்த்தோடு, சேஷு, கூல் சுரேஷ், மாறன், சுவாமிநாதன் உள்ளிட்ட சந்தான காமெடி யுனிவர்ஸின் ஏஜென்ட்களும் ஒரு கலகலப்பான காமெடி படத்திற்கான சேட்டைகளைச் சிறப்பாகச் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

ஓம் நாராயணனின் ஒளிப்பதிவும், எம்.தியாகராஜனின் படத்தொகுப்பும் தேவையான பங்களிப்பை வழங்கியிருக்கின்றன. டி.இமான் இசையில் விக்னேஷ் சிவன் வரிகளில் 'குலுக்கு குலுக்கு' பாடல் மட்டும் ரசிக்க வைக்கிறது. 'வழக்கமான' டி.இமான் பாடலாக ஒலிக்கும் மற்ற பாடல்கள் ஒன்றுக்கும் உதவாத படத்தின் ரத்னபுரி ஜமீன் கணக்காக மாறி படத்தின் ஓட்டத்திற்கு வேகத்தடையாக இருக்கின்றன. 'கிரீன் மேட்' காட்சிகள் பேட்ச் ஒர்க் பார்க்கப்பட்டதுபோல சொதப்பலாகத் தெரிவது, ஒரே சீனுக்குள் மாறிக்கொண்டே இருக்கும் சந்தானத்தின் 'ஹேர் ஸ்டைல்' எனப் பல கன்டினியூட்டி பிரச்னைகளையும் உணர முடிகிறது.

இரண்டாம் பாதியும் வெவ்வேறு காமெடி குழுக்களின் காமெடி கலாட்டாக்களால் நிறைந்திருக்கிறது. அந்த காமெடிகளும் நன்றாக ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகியிருக்கின்றன. ஆனால், ஒட்டுமொத்த படத்திலும் எள்ளளவுக்குக் கூட லாஜிக் இல்லை. "திரையரங்கிற்குள் நுழையும்போதே கட்டை பை நிறைய லாஜிக்குகளை நீங்களே எடுத்து வாருங்கள்" என்ற முன்னெச்சரிக்கையைக் கொடுத்திருக்கலாம். இக்குறைகளை நடிகர்களின் சேட்டைகளும், ஒன்லைன் காமெடிகளும் ஓரளவிற்கு மறைக்க முயன்றிருக்கின்றன.

Inga Naan Thaan Kingu review: Just another addition to the assembly line of hit-and-miss Santhanam films

Even though Santhanam’s one-liners have a skewed hit ratio in the film, the ones that work bring the roof down.

It is odd to see a Santhanam film begin with a terrorist attack in Mumbai. Make no mistake, his latest — Inga Naan Thaan Kingu , is pegged as a laugh riot. But it begins with a bomb blast that kills hundreds of people.

It’s a sobering start, and this continues for a while even when the film moves to Chennai. Here, we are acquainted with the life of Vetrivel, a happy-go-unlucky-in-marriage youngster.

Despite working for a matrimonial website, he is unable to find the best life partner. Why? He wants ₹25 lakh in dowry to repay his home loan. Why does he have a home loan?

He is an orphan and believes he will get a bride only if he possesses his own house. It might be the writing team’s way of saying, “Hey look! What the hero is asking isn’t dowry! The marriage market forced him to buy his own house. So, it is the fault of the system.”

Lol, I guess!

Promises a laughter ride

Inga Naan Thaan Kingu takes some time to get into the groove. But the film steps up a gear when Vetri gets married to Thenmozhi (Priyalaya).

She is the heiress to a rich zamindar named Vijayakumar (Thambi Ramaiah) and the sister of Chinna Jameen Bala (Bala Saravanan).

In these portions, logic goes right out of the window. There is no point questioning the whys and hows but we don’t mind because the comedy works.

It might not be ha-ha-ha-ha jokes but they are definitely ha-ha ones.

Even though Santhanam’s one-liners have a skewed hit ratio in the film, the ones that work bring the roof down. The same holds good for almost all Inga Naan Thaan Kingu gags.

In comedies, many a time, it is futile to expect character arcs, redemption, etc., to happen to the protagonists. We are in for a laughter ride, and these films are measured by that yardstick.

On that front, Inga Naan Thaan Kingu manages to get things right a few times when the film revolves around the antics of the zamindar family and Vetri.

There is one sentiment scene in this stretch that is honest and very effective. But it is soon followed by a comedy scene that kickstarts the comedy of errors. Now, we can’t reminisce too long on the pathos when the aim is to make us laugh. We move ahead because we have to.

Also, it is interesting to see Santhanam settle in the back seat, and not go on comedy overdrive right from the word go. This allows Santhanam and Priyalaya to break into a sensuous duet at one time, and turn into Indian versions of Ken and Barbie at another.

Yes, songs are hindrances in a film that involves a corpse, terrorist threats, police announcing a big bounty, three whimsical groups vying for the money, and a trigger-happy terrorist.

But they exist to showcase the other facets of Santhanam—the actor, and these are small compromises when looking at the bigger picture.

Incoherent plot plays spoilsport.

Unfortunately, Inga Naan Thaan Kingu is burdened by the lack of a coherent plot. We are bombarded with one gag after another, and since not all of them work, we are left playing the waiting game for the next big laugh.

It is during this waiting period that we realise that the film is unintentionally vacuous at times. Despite raising the stakes, especially in the Sundar C-esque climax where all characters come together under a single roof, Inga Naan Thaan Kingu falls flat because it fails to go all in.

The slight inclination towards heroism in the final act doesn’t bode well for the film. But this focus on Santhanam’s heroic antics provides other actors with the opportunity to showcase their comedy skills.

While the usual suspects like Thambi Ramaiah, Bala Saravanan, Munishkanth, Maaran, Swaminathan and the late Seshu get the timing right, the newcomer—Priyalaya is the surprise package in the film.

There are a lot of scenes that involve the entire ensemble, and Priyalaya manages to stand toe-to-toe with these veterans.

The premise of Inga Naan Thaan Kingu , I mean, the actual premise—the apartment where Vetri resides, must be one of the weirdest places in the city.

Is it normal to have a fully functioning bordello in a residential complex? Now wait, I am not saying it shouldn’t be there. We saw something similar in Ayan (2009), too. But there needs to be logic in the fantastical, too.

As the film progresses, we understand that the sex workers are present in the same apartment to facilitate convenience in the writing. In these portions, the filmmaker opts for low-brow humour that is mostly ineffective but easy pickings.

Take, for instance, the extended scene in a hospital where these characters dress up as nurses. Instead of wearing the nurse uniform, we see in our country, they dress up like the characters of a porn parody from the West.

The commodification of these characters felt disappointing. But, towards the end of that gag, there is a brilliant callback to an earlier scene, and that half-a-laugh makes us overlook the disappointment, albeit briefly.

Inga Naan Thaan Kingu might test your patience a lot but manages to throw in gags that are smart, silly, well-written, winged in, risque, uncomfortable, unnecessary, unhinged, and a lot more.

The film seems to have been built on the hope that bombarding us with attempts at comedy might make us overlook the issues, including a distracting wig for Santhanam. If only!

‘Inga Naan Thaan Kingu’ movie review: This Santhanam comedy of errors is more error than comedy

One of those routine santhanam comedies that require you to leave your brain at home, anand narayan’s film offers barely a few laughs.

There’s a terrorist attack in Mumbai and the next target happens to be in Chennai. The police are on their toes. Will they be able to avert an impending disaster?

But that can wait, alas, as Inga Naan Thaan Kingu is not one of those thrillers that Kollywood routinely dishes out or an edge-of-the-seat tale. It is a comedy starring comedian-turned-hero Santhanam as Vetri, a man who desperately wants to marry but just cannot find a girl. So what does he do? He joins as an employee at a matrimonial company!

“ Sweet kadai-la vela panna rendu sweet saapta thappa? ” (If a person working in a sweet shop eats a couple of sweets, is it a sin?),” Vetri tells his manager when asked why he is more interested in getting married himself, rather than achieving targets, which is getting other people married.

This is one of those routine Santhanam comedies that require you to leave your brain at home. At least that is exactly what the first half is, as we travel alongside Vetri as he scouts for a girl and finally ends up marrying a rich zamindar girl. Or so he thinks.

Inga Naan Thaan Kingu primarily revolves around two things, both of which Tamil cinema has dealt with in excess: a marriage that isn’t what it seems to be, and a death that doesn’t seem what it seems to be. With a complicated problem at hand, Vetri — and a motley group that end up irritating not just him but us, the audiences too — has to find answers.

For Santhanam, whose avatar as hero has seen more downs than ups, Inga Naan Thaan Kingu presents a good deal, because he doesn’t have to do much of the heavy lifting. It is written like a comedy of errors, with Santhanam and friends finding themselves in awkward situations, most of which are not as funny as they ought to be. The humour works in just a few places; the loud caricaturish characters, played by Thambi Ramaiah and Bala Saravanan, get on your nerves a lot in this 131-minute Anand Narayan directorial.

D Imman contributes little to making things better. The music composer hasn’t been at his best for a while, and that continues with this film, where he seems to have purely gone with the vibe and not attempted anything more. Inga Naan Thaan Kingu is one of those summer films that is more error than comedy.

Santhanam returns with some solid laughs

The combo of Santhanam, Bala Saravanan, and Thambi Ramaiah enhanced the movie. Rather than stealing the spotlight, Santhanam gives other comedians the space to deliver their jokes. After a considerable time, Munishkanth�s farce as Body Balaraman actually works. There are a few familiar faces like Seshu and Maran who have small appearances but shine. Priyalaya looks pretty and dances well. Vivek Prasanna gets to play a dual role and he makes for a silly corpse. (more)

Chaotic assembly of random ideas and weak humour

Inga Naan Thaan Kingu' suffers from a muddled screenplay with random ideas stitched together with paltry humour. While the supporting characters try to make up for the weak dialogues with physical humour, a visibly uninterested Santhanam pulls down the film even further. As the film throws one gag after another, and attempts a joke with every dialogue, some lines do manage to crack a smile, through sheer statistical probability. But as the tedium sets in towards the end of the film, we remember the long patches of dull moments more than the occasional jokes that made us laugh. (more)

'Martin Luther King' Review: Good Concept- Weak Narration

This is the Telugu adaptation of the Tamil movie "Mandela," which captivated online audiences upon its release on the OTT platform. While Yogi Babu portrayed the lead role in the Tamil version, Sampoornesh Babu assumes the same character in the Telugu version.

Now, let's delve into the specifics.

Story: Smile (Sampoornesh Babu) is an orphan who resides as a cobbler in a remote village called Padamarapadu. He has a teenage friend and assistant named Bata Babu. 

The village is split into two zones: the North and South. While Lokamanya Tilak, also known as Loki (Venkatesh Maha), heads the South Zone, the North zone is led by Jagajjeevan (Naresh). These two are half-brothers to an elderly man who is the village chief.

Smile encounters Vasanta, a postal employee who encourages him to save his money through postal deposits, thus fostering a friendship between the two. She even assists him in acquiring a Voter ID Card, adopting the name Martin Luther King.

The villagers and both zone inhabitants ill-treat Smile, constantly subjecting him to insults. 

As the elections draw near, it is revealed that Smile, aka Martin Luther King, possesses a voter ID, making him a significant figure. 

The main plot revolves around how both zone leaders attempt to entice him with freebies to secure his vote, realizing his pivotal role in the election.

Artiste's Performence: Sampoornesh Babu delivered his role commendably and met the expectations. While the original character portrayed a barber, in the Telugu version, the character is depicted as a cobbler.

Naresh's engagement in his role is notable, significantly enhancing the overall appeal of the film. As the only senior and renowned artist in the movie, his presence adds some value to the movie.

Venkatesh Maha's performance comes as a pleasant surprise. He embodies a body language and appearance reminiscent of Vijay Sethupathi. His natural ease suggests that with persistent effort, he could excel as an actor.

Saranya Pradeep gave a decent performance as a rural post office employee. 

The other characters like Bata Babu are performed adequately, with nearly everyone demonstrating a level of skill expected of an artist. 

The actor who portrayed the village head was particularly intriguing, effortlessly and subtly carrying out his role.

Technical Excellence: The film's setting and artistic design leave a strong impression. The song titled "King..." in the latter half of the movie is captivating and holds the audience's attention.

The thoughtful integration of Sree Sree's poem, voiced by the poet himself, into a scene adds an extra layer of depth.

Cinematography and editing closely mirror the original Tamil version, maintaining a consistent and faithful adaptation.

Highlights: Storyline Backdrop  Performances 

Drawback: Not on par with original Less humor in dialogues Overall Background score

Analysis: This film serves as a satirical reflection of the contemporary Indian election scenario, the mindsets of the people, and the greed of politicians.

The portrayal of how people often sell their votes and how politicians stage dramas solely prior to elections is skillfully depicted, allowing laymen to comprehend the intricacies of the current electoral system.

Its release during the election season is perfectly timed. 

That being said, the Tamil version of the film, watched on the OTT platform, proved to be engaging primarily due to the believable portrayal of character by Yogi Babu. However, Sampoornesh Babu's performance, although sincere, didn't quite match up to the same level.

While the majority of the storyline and narrative are engaging, there are moments when the plot feels contrived and forced, as characters seem to act according to the director's convenience rather than naturally. For instance, the sudden transformation of all the village voters, regardless of their affiliation with the North or South zones, into sincere and honest individuals followed by a Burrakatha and Martin Luther King's revolution appears implausible. It would have dealt with more attention and grip to make the drama more convincing. 

The lack of consistency in dialogue writing is apparent, with some characters speaking in a Telangana accent, others in a Rayalaseema accent, and some in Andhra slang. If this is an intentional effort to emphasize the story's universality across various Telugu regions, then it can be considered a thoughtful attempt though not convincing. 

However the overall dialogue writing is average, failing to provide sufficient entertainment or humor.

Similarly, there's a noticeable confusion concerning the timeline within the film. While the villagers are seen using smartphones, they are also depicted showing great interest in and drawing inspiration from the outdated Burra Kathas.

On the flip side, here is some engaging stuff- The character of Loki bears a resemblance to Nara Lokesh, frequently using lines like "Tiyyagundi" and "Tiyyagundaali." On the other hand, the character of Jagajjeevan echoes Jagan Mohan Reddy, often embracing and kissing his supporters while saying "nenunnaanu."

Furthermore, the deliberate use of light blue flags for Jagajjeevan and a combination of light yellow and pink for Loki suggests the filmmakers' intention to amalgamate the major Telugu political parties from both Telugu states.

On the whole, the film offers a reasonable level of entertainment with a significant focus on delivering a message. 

However, the slow-paced narrative, perhaps attributed to the background score, might not resonate with all viewers. While it's an ideal film for release during the election season, whether audiences will truly grasp the message conveyed remains a pertinent question.
