Influence is one of the buzzwords of our time. Back in the 1930s, when Dale Carnegie wrote his best-selling How to Win Friends and Influence People , it was largely about persuading people to your point of view. As such, it led some to accuse the self-help author of manipulation. These days we tend to think of it in terms of social media, where brands are increasingly working with individuals to promote their offerings. There are still accusations of manipulation in some quarters, but there is also a growing emphasis on authenticity. So, while many of the people seen as influencers are already famous, the field is increasingly varied, with many companies obtaining the results they seek by working with people with comparatively small social media followings. Indeed, McKinsey & Co, a management consultancy, says that the influencer economy had by last year reached a value of more than $21 billion.

In common with other observers of this booming field, the consultancy identifies five broad categories of influencer.

• Nano influencers with fewer than 10,000 followers
• Micro influencers, who have from 10,000 to 50,000 followers
• Medium influencers, with 50,000 to 100,000 followers
• Macro influencers, who have more than 500,000
• Mega influencers, who have over one million followers.

For brands trying to reach a large audience quickly, these influencers with large audiences are obviously attractive partners. According to the trend-spotting company Exploding Topics , footballer Christiano Ronaldo is currently the most followed individual, with more than 900 million followers, comfortably ahead of the likes of Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and even Taylor Swift. But the consultancy points out that such an approach is not always the best strategy. “Micro influencers might produce more relatable content than their macro counterparts, who use professional photographers, stylists, makeup artists, and all kinds of consultants to put a post together. While macro influencers may advertise a lifestyle that seems unattainable to many people, micro influencers, on the other hand, can represent accessibility to their followers,” it says.

Increasingly, though, companies are not leaving it to outsiders to promote their wares. Executives and other employees are starting to appear on the platforms. This is partly linked with the blending of personal and professional lives that has accelerated since the pandemic. LinkedIn, for example, used to be very much about finding jobs and making professional connections, but is now just a likely to feature inspirational life stories and the like.

But it is also a result of the arrival of a new generation of leaders who have grown up with the internet and social media. Many of them are clearly comfortable with the technology. But others are turning for help to people like Giselle Ugarte , who describes herself as an online performance coach.

This requires a certain amount of bravery because, while businesses tend to aspire to across-the-board appeal, this sort of personal marketing involves having a point of view and being clear about who the target audience is. “A friend to all is a friend to none,” said Ugarte. It also requires a willingness to make mistakes. Adding that the approach should be more like starting conversations than presenting a product or service, she says it is all about creating a sense of community. “People are craving connection,” she said.

She points to the online activity of Sara Blakely , the founder of the women’s underwear company Spanx, and Barbara Corcoran , the real estate entrepreneur who appears on the television show Shark Tank as good examples of how to go about it.

Another aspect of this is that social media is increasingly used as a search engine. Ugarte said that users can look up potential clients or employers and not being searchable was a missed opportunity.

It is a point taken up by another person using influence in a different way. Gene Moran is a former US Navy captain who now works as a lobbyist in the defence and security fields. Interviewed recently, he said that it was not widely realised that those making decisions on behalf of the government did their homework before meeting those trying to sell to them. “A social media profile is important,” he added.

Moran has teamed up with the speaker, consultant and author, Alan Weiss, on the book Million Dollar Influence: How to Drive Powerful Decisions Through Language, Leverage and Leadership . The central theme is that opportunities are often missed by people over-complicating how they approach things in negotiations.

Among the mistakes he has identified over the years are allowing ego to get in the way, being too competitive and the temptation to move too abruptly. Again like Ugarte, Moran is an advocate of having a conversation. Arguing that the idea of a quick “elevator pitch” might have made sense in the 1960s, he urges participants to allow time for talking and to accept that getting another meeting might be a desirable initial result. Often people selling something try to convince somebody rather than convey information so that the people from whom they are seeking a decision can convince themselves, he said.

Moran added that he is not claiming that he and Weiss have come up with anything new, but he does maintain that by simplifying established principles they have made the approach more accessible for a modern audience. “We are applying readily available tools that shape outcomes in ways that are favourable without anybody losing. The concepts are the same whether you’re selling submarines or staplers,” he said.
