Short Essay on Home, Sweet Home 250 Words for Kids and Students in English

‘East or West, home is the best. It is a famous old saying, which is true to the hilt. I live in a small flat. My father owns it on hire-purchase basis and pays monthly installments. When the house was allotted, it was only a one-room set. We were not born at that time. As the family grew in size, my father added one more room, since it is an extendable flat, to meet the needs of the growing family.

Home, Sweet Home Essay

It is a compact dwelling in which we have all the basic facilities within the four walls. We have combined the bathroom and toilet and created a small kitchen. There are marble chips on the floor. We have covered the drawing-room with a wall-to-wall carpet. The showcase in the drawing-room has been arranged very nicely in the centre. Whenever we visit some historical place, we bring some memento and place them in the show-case. We have arranged the drawing-room in such a manner as would allow it to be changed into a guest room. I have a folding study-table in one corner and a computer in other.

There is a box-type double bed in the bed room. We have filled those boxes with our winter clothes. The almirah in the corner contains all our clothes that are used at present. We have a TV set in one corner and a computer other.

It is a small house, but it is the most comfortable place and heaven for me.

Essay on Sweet Home in 1000-1500 Words

Home is where the heart is, they say. And indeed, there is no place like home. Home is not just a physical structure made of bricks and mortar; it is a place where we feel safe, loved, and comfortable. It is a place where we can truly be ourselves, where we can relax and unwind after a long day, where we can create memories with our loved ones. Home is a sanctuary, a haven in a world full of chaos and uncertainty.

For me, my sweet home is more than just a place to live; it is a reflection of who I am and what I value. It is a place where I can express myself through the decor, the furniture, and the little details that make it uniquely mine. My home is a place where I can surround myself with the things that bring me joy and comfort, where I can escape from the outside world and just be.

One of the things that make my home sweet is the people I share it with. My family is the heart and soul of my home, and their presence fills every corner with love and warmth. Whether we are gathered around the dinner table sharing a meal, watching a movie together in the living room, or just sitting quietly in each other’s company, it is the people in my home that make it truly special.

Another thing that makes my home sweet is the memories that we have created within its walls. From birthday parties to holiday celebrations, from lazy Sunday mornings to late-night conversations, every moment spent in my home is a memory that I will cherish forever. These memories are like little treasures that I carry with me wherever I go, reminding me of the love and happiness that fills my home.

The physical space of my home also plays a big role in making it sweet. The cozy living room with its plush couches and soft throw blankets, the inviting kitchen with its delicious smells and warm atmosphere, the peaceful bedroom with its comfortable bed and soothing colors – every room in my home has its own unique charm that adds to the overall feeling of comfort and contentment.

But it is not just the physical space that makes my home sweet; it is also the little touches that I have added to make it truly mine. The family photos on the walls, the scented candles that fill the air with their comforting fragrance, the soft rugs and cushions that add a touch of coziness – all of these little details come together to create a space that is not just a house, but a home.

In a world that is constantly changing and evolving, my home is a constant, a place of stability and security. No matter what challenges I may face in my life, I know that I can always come back to my home and find solace and comfort. It is a place where I can recharge and rejuvenate, where I can find peace and serenity in the midst of chaos.

My home is not just a place to live; it is a reflection of who I am and what I value. It is a sanctuary, a haven in a world full of chaos and uncertainty. It is a place where I can truly be myself, where I can surround myself with the things that bring me joy and comfort. It is a place where I can create memories with my loved ones, where I can find solace and security in a world that is constantly changing.

In conclusion, my sweet home is more than just a physical structure; it is a place of love, comfort, and happiness. It is a sanctuary where I can be myself, where I can create memories with my loved ones, where I can find peace and serenity in a world full of chaos. My home is my refuge, my safe haven, my sweet escape from the outside world. And for that, I am truly grateful.

What Makes A House A Home

Home Sweet Home

by Jordan Sandoval | Jan 14, 2018

essay about home sweet home

Evan Taylor

Olympia high school.

Home: “a congenial environment; a social unit formed by a family setting; or a place of origin.” This is the definition of home given by The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (1974). I believe this definition is fantastic and accurately describes what my home means to me.

One reason my house is a home is because it’s a sanctuary where I am surrounded by those who love me. High school can be rough sometimes and hard to deal with, but I know everyday that when I walk in through the front door, everything is going to be just fine. My house is a place where I feel safe; it is a place I trust. I am free to relax, I am free to do homework, I am free to make memories with friends, and I am free to laugh, love, and live with my family. I am never lonely at home and on my worst days someone is always there to cheer me up, whether it is my mom, dad, brother, or sister. Our house is a place where I wake up every morning feeling blessed because of where I live. Blessed because there is nowhere I would rather be than home. Home is place of peace where I can be happy, because if you are not happy at home, you will not be happy anywhere else.

Olympia, Washington is not where I am originally from. I was born in Denver, Colorado but moved to Olympia with my parents when I was less than two years old. Some might say that Denver is my home because that is where I was born. I would disagree. My house in Olympia is my home because that is where I originated as a person. I became who I am today because of this town and the people here who influenced me. I grew up here, Olympia is my home, and my heart and pride lie here. I have traveled to many other foreign cities and towns but none can compare. I have experienced so much within the walls of my house, I lost my first tooth, I learned to ride a bike, I survived an earthquake, I battled through fevers, and celebrated holidays with loved ones. These precious memories both good and bad are part of what make my house my home.

Home is not defined by money or other superficial characteristics. A home can be anywhere or built out of anything. It is not just a shelter; it is a refuge. Homes are not built out of bricks and mortar; houses are. Homes are built out of memories, time, and love. They are improved with the addition of family and friends, not furniture or fancy TV’s. American clergyman Charles Henry Parkhurst once said, “Home interprets heaven. Home is heaven for beginners.” It is a place where you can return from work, school, church, vacations, or just a trip to grocery store thinking, “There is no place like home” (L. Frank Baum).

Introduction

This poem talks about the comfort and pleasure of home. As humble as it may be, there is no place like home. It soothes our heart and brings us comfort. No matter how many beautiful places we roam, they will never measure up to home. The poem is divided into five stanzas. The rhyme scheme of each stanza is  aabbcc.

The poet says that although  we may roam  palaces and enjoy many different kinds of pleasure,  there’s no place like home , even if it is humble.  A charm from the sky , or the heavens, seem to bless us at home, making it holy. Even if we seek this feeling through the world, we can never find it elsewhere. The poet exclaims about his home, his  sweet home . He says that  there’s no place like home .

The poet says that when one is away from home, splendid things dazzle us but it is in vain, or of no use. He just wants his  lowly thatched cottage again  because there is no place more comfortable than home. He wants the birds that sing happily and come at his call at home, and  the peace of mind  he finds there that is  dearer than all  things. He again exclaims about his  sweet home  and says that  there’s no place like home.

The poet tells us how sweet it is to feel  a fond father’s smile , and have  the caress of a mother   to soothe  and charm you. He says that others may find delight and pleasures while roaming new places, but he desires  the pleasures of home.  He exclaims about his  sweet home  once again, and says that  there’s no place like home.

There is no place like home. Nothing can ever compare to the comfort and pleasure it brings. So, no matter how far we go, our greatest comfort will always be home.

A Place I Call Home

My home is situated in the city. It is not too big nor too small, just the perfect size. My family lives in the home. It comprises of my father, mother, sister and grandparents. We live in our ancestral home so my home is very vintage.

It is very old but remains to be super strong. There are six rooms in my home. Each family member has a unique room which they have decorated as per their liking. For instance, my elder sister is a big fan of music, so her walls are filled with posters of musicians like BTS, RM, and more.

Our drawing room is a large one with a high ceiling. We still use the vintage sofa set which my grandmother got as a wedding gift. Similarly, there is a vintage TV and radio which she uses till date.

Adjoining the drawing room is my bedroom. It is my favourite room because it contains everything that I love. I have a pet guinea pig which lives in a cage in my room. We also have a storeroom which is filled with things we don’t use but also cannot discard.

Our lawn in front of the house has a little garden. In that garden , my mother is growing her own kitchen garden. She is passionate about it and brings different seeds every month to grow them out and use them in our food.

The fondest memories I have in a place is my terrace. Our terrace is huge with many plants. I remember all the good times we have spent there as a family. Moreover, we play there a lot when my cousins come over. Thus, every nook and corner of my home is special to me.

Why Waste Money on Rent When You Could Own Your Own Home?

Why Waste Money on Rent When You Could Own Your Own Home?

Why spend money that is really needed for other things? Why live uncomfortably? Why be trapped in this hole called a home that belongs to another person? Why not live free and peacefully? When a person rents he or she usually throws away money that could be used to purchase something that belongs to them. Money is not easy to come by so why pay out hundreds toward something that is not benefit to the person paying it out. There is no good explanation for making a decision like this.

The best option in a situation like this is to buy a house. Buying a house is a better option than renting an apartment.Buying a house has some very good ownership benefits. As a buyer and not an actual renter the investment process is better.

ready to help you now

Without paying upfront

Buying has great investment benefits. A person’s house is their personal investment. The benefit of the money that is spent monthly to the buyer is that each monthly payment builds equity (Bluejay, 2010). If the home that a person is buying is sold before it is paid off is that the equity that is built goes to the actual homeowner (Bluejay, 2010).

One of the biggest benefits of actually owning a home is the monthly payments are not wasted. The money that is spent monthly actually goes towards buying than into another homeowner’s pockets (Map, 2011). The buyer actually saves more money that can be spent on other things. Home owning is very beneficial financially.

It can greatly decrease a person’s yearly federal and state income tax bills (Demand, 2010). There are numerous amounts of deductions that homeowners could file on their taxes like property taxes, moving costs, real estate transactions, and if a homeowner works from home he or she can deduct home office deductions (Demand, 2010).Buying a house has way more benefits than renting. Buying a home provides more freedom than renting.

When a person buys the house belongs to them. There is no landlord. The person does not have to worry about a landlord in and out of their home. There is more privacy.

The person’s home is their own. If he or she wants company then it is up to them to allow people into their home. The homebuyer does not have to worry about inspections and wanting on the landlord to do repairs for his or her home. A homebuyer is free to decorate his or her home inside out.

Actually owning a home can help improve a person’s quality of life, especially if they have children, the benefits can be priceless (RP Reality, 2011). A person’s home becomes their own private retreat. A home provides more space and more privacy than an apartment. The person can garden and do basically anything that he or she deems fit in his or her own home (RP Reality, 2011).

This is ideal for home buyers who are looking to start a family because their kids and pets have the freedom to roam in the privacy of their own home.Apartments are crowded and full of tenants, whereas an actual home is a person’s own little cubby hole that can be customized according to the homeowner’s wishes. As a homeowner the owner has the ultimate say so over what goes on, which is ultimate freedom. When thinking of a home in comparison to an apartment all that is though about is home sweet home.

This is every person’s dream. Buying a house means being stable. Homes are meant to be creative and to show a person’s style of living.Having an apartment does not have this option to the fullest.

When a person buys a house he or she is free to decorate their place inside and out. Usually with an apartment there are limitations on what could be done to the walls, the flooring, and outside of the apartment (Map, 2011). With a house freedom is all given to the actual owner. With an actual home a person provides a place for their family to be stable.

Every person wants a place where their kids could call home. No one person wants to move around from place to place. When a potential homebuyer goes out and actual purchases a house this is a benefit that comes behind buying the house. In apartments the longest length of stability guaranteed to a certain extent is the length of the lease that is signed when obtaining the apartment (Ki-Cheon, 2009).

Buying a house provides stability forever unless the owner decides to sell or to move into another home in which the owner gains equity for selling. This is still a huge benefit. Owning a home is a very huge security measure. When a person is an actual homeowner and not a renter he or she can control who actually enters his or her home (Map, 2011).

It is easier to purchase home alarm systems and everything that goes on in a person’s home is controlled by the owner. As a homeowner the option of what is allowed and what goes on is controlled by the actual homeowner. If an issue comes up and the owner has to move somewhere else then this is a huge benefit. As a seller a person can earn so much money and it can build equity (Media, 2010).

Usually homes sell for way more than the purchase prices, especially if the owner has customized the home, in which was discussed earlier (RP Reality, 2011). The selling price could be a huge benefit to any owner who is selling their home and moving. These benefits cannot be earned by an apartment renter. Buying a home is the best route to choose in any situation.

Buying a home means actually owning something. There is no more following another person’s rules, no more paying out unnecessary money. It means a sense of security and stability for a person’s family. It is the key to a better lifestyle.

The benefits are all there. There is privacy, freedom from landlords, stability, and a person can gain equity, and most of all they can have a place that they call their own. It is home sweet home. Buying a house is basically the key to happiness when a person is becoming stable.

Yes, it will take a lot of time and hard work to accomplish this goal but it is worth the struggle. Every person needs that special place to call home sweet home.ReferencesBluejay. Michael, (1999-2000) “The Ultimate Rent vs.

As a child, I move homes quite regularly due to the constant changes in my father's job. Thus, my childhood was like an endless roller coaster with unexpected and sometimes frightening curves and turns.

Just when I am feeling the exhilaration of having found a home and of reaching the peak, my roller coaster takes a devastating plunge down the steep slope and I am left to start rolling along to a new part of the ride, symbolizing a new part of my life. Fortunately, at the age of nine, I moved into my Godmother's massive, white house filled with so many windows that it sometimes seems like the house was made out of clear sparkling glass.Being a petite little girl, I remember feeling like a princess entering her beautiful castle for the very first time. Now as a young successful college student residing in the hectic and busy city of Los Angeles, I feel an unexplainable urge to visit the one place that I was able to call home: my old neighborhood in the small and peaceful city of Garden Grove. Even though ten years have gone by, I still feel all the sensations that came to me when I was first introduced to this house.

A wide smile is coming across my face as I slowly approach the gigantic brown door with sections of glass paintings like those you see in the famous Notre Dame Cathedral. It still smells of newly sawed wood and the gloss that is painted over it shimmers in the sunlight, giving me a sense of welcoming and love. A tingling feeling comes over me and I giggle like a young schoolgirl who just saw her crush over in the distance. I find it so difficult to believe yet so comforting to see all the physical features of the house the same way that I have left it.My perspective of course has change in some degree because now I see this place not as a present home, but as a piece of my childhood that I hold so dear to my heart.

This gigantic mansion is guarded by a tall, cream-painted metal gate, covered with fancy designs similar to the curves and twists of a curly fry. Being within that wall, I feel like I am in the arms of a guardian angel and that no harm can come my way. The front yard is fill with exotic flowers of all shapes, sizes, colors, and scent. One sniff and you're intoxicated with the bliss of being in heaven, never wanting to return to reality. There is a patio table and chairs on the front porch where I sit to just watch the sky and the plants in front of me.

I remember specific times when I remain in that position so long that my thigh had the imprints of the rubber horizontal straps on the patio chair, of which then I would sit and rub until it fades away. Inside, I am greeted by the gentle and soft hug of my Godmother. Even though the house appears unchanged, she however, has aged into someone that I barely recognize. Dark lines of wrinkles on the side of her eyes are visibly clear. The roots of her hair are now white and she seems exhausted.

She walks over to the kitchen counter and starts washing the vegetables to prepare for a delicious meal. I quickly walk over and offer to lend a hand, but is rejected and told to go take a walk and enjoy myself before dinner is ready. So like a humble servant, I obey, turn my body, and head straight for the door. The monstrous heavy wooden door slowly opens with a disturbing creeeakkk and I frown my face from the displeasure of the sound.

Stepping outside, I am overwhelmed by a sudden gust of cold air that brings strange chills down, my spine.I shiver uncontrollably and search quickly for something to help me forget this feeling of being in Antarctica. As I walk, I tilt my head slightly upward and found the warmth that I was looking for. The sun like a huge, majestic, golden sphere is slowly descending from the pale blue sky.

I smile at the pleasurable warmth that I feel when I see its glowing yet dimming light. It warms me both inside and out like a steady flame in a fireplace. The sky flares and burns with a mixture of pink, red, orange and yellow. It almost looks like a giant imaginary artist took a paintbrush and spread all these colors across the massive surface of the sky.Stunned by the beauty, I stand and admire the sight like a child watching a circus act fill with dancing monkeys, talented jugglers, tight rope walkers, acrobats soaring across the air, and lions being released from their cages.

I turn my body to continue walking straight ahead and with each step, I hear the crushing and crunching of leaves beneath the sole of my shoe. My serene feeling of peace suddenly deteriorates as I approach the end of the street where Laramore Lane meets Gilbert Avenue. This corner sits the one house in the entire neighborhood that I have always found strange and spooky. This particular old, dark, and mysterious house gives me the creeps every time I look at it; even now I am strangely bothered by the sight.

There was a huge pine tree on the front lawn, which covers the house so well that it is almost impossible to see anything pass the tall tree. The only view that you can make of it is the chipping of paint on the dirty brown walls that was probably once white. The wooden steps on the porch that leads to the front door are broken and slowly being eaten away by hungry termites. Perhaps it is only my imagination, but this house releases a smell that is almost unbearable.I quickly pinch my nose in responds to the horrid smell of dirty diapers and rotten eggs.

I feel like I am standing in front of a ten year old dumpster that has never been dispose of or emptied out. I can just picture the swarms of flies and insects that this house must attract. Of all the years that I lived in this neighborhood, never once did I see a resident walk out of this house, nor an automobile in the driveway. The door has never left its place to let a single gust of wind or a streak of light pass through. Thus I begin to call this destination, "the haunted house".The unsolved mystery of this bizarre and deserted house gives me an eerie feeling that lingers in my body.

Walking away, I still feel uneasy and disturbed. The unreasonable child inside of me is convincing me that I am being followed by a ghost. I shiver and quickly shake my head to try to get rid of all the crazy thoughts. To my surprise, I am unexpectedly amused by an odd clicking noise. Without a sign of warning, the air is unexpectedly covered with a thin mist of cool liquid.

Listening intently, I hear the rapid, furious tapping of great shots of water. "Tsh tsh tsh tsh," it went.I step closer and I can vaguely feel the light breeze of the water mist blowing upon my face. I am overcome with the urge to twirl and pretend that I am dancing in the rain. I ignore all thoughts of bypassers thinking that I am insane because I am too content to care. Standing on the cold wet pavement of the neighborhood that I grew up in, nothing seems more important than the happiness that I feel as I relive the silly activities I did as a child.

My joy is soon defeated by my dizziness and the sudden buzzing of electricity in the street lights as they each, one after another flicker rapidly and turns on.Directly across the street through a wide window with thin sheer curtains, a family is setting the dinner table and preparing for their evening meal. I tried without any success to smell the delicious aroma of the food. I imagine the scent of roasted chickens, warm fluffy mashed potatoes, fresh vegetables, and mouth-watering biscuits. However the only scent that reached my nose was that of a newly watered lawn, gasoline on the asphalt nearby, and even a faint sniff of the garbage can sitting on the side of the street. My craving for a satisfying home-cook meal grows so intense; I begin to think that I am going to die of starvation.

I decide that this was the perfect time for this princess to return to her castle. As I enter the front door, I turn my head to take one last look around. A car steadily passes by, a black cat with glowing, glaring eyes jumps off the fence on my left; a few elderly ladies are taking their daily post-dinner walk, talking in soft voices and occasionally bursting out in small laughter. I make my way back into my warm safe home thinking of what an absolutely unique neighborhood this is. Every house seems to have its story and every corner a surprise.Revisiting this area is special to me because I feel like I am watching a film of me as a child.

Looking at various spots on the sidewalk, I can see myself as a little girl, painfully falling off my bike and limping back home to cry to my mother. I can feel the sting as she washes the wound with soap and water. I can hear myself crying and telling her how much it hurts. I can taste the sweet juices of the fruit candy that she always gives me while she gently places a band-aide on my scrap and I can smell the pleasing scent of my mother's perfume as she bends over to kiss my forehead, telling me that everything is ok now.

My perspective has absolutely changed. I feel more appreciation and love for this area because it has been a like a scenery to the story of my life. When I was small, I was just living my life in this area, never thinking any more of it then just a place of residence. Being older now, I realize how lucky I am to have lived in such a diverse and remarkable place.

To many people who have not experience living here, this neighborhood probably looks like any other typical place. However, to me it is a treasure chest that holds the most precious jewels in the world, my childhood memories. Everyone matures and strives to be successful, all to have a rewarding and comforting life. This is what I desired, but the significance of visiting my neighborhood is that it holds emotions and feelings that I can never achieve from material objects and success.

It is a complicated mixture of emotions like a complex chemical equation. It is a place that gives me such an amazing feeling of happiness, a place worthy of the title "Home sweet home. "

Joy Duggar and Austin Forsyth Put Their Cute Arkansas Home on the Market for $369K

Formerly known as Joy Duggar, Joy Forsyth was a mainstay of the popular family reality show “19 Kids and Counting.”

Now, she and husband Austin Forsyth are moving on. The couple recently put their adorable home in Fayetteville, AR , on the market for $369,000.

After purchasing the property in 2016, the couple embarked on a “thoughtful” remodel of the 1958 build that provides “modern comforts” while maintaining its original charm.

The TV personality has been in the public eye for much of her life and also had a YouTube show, “Follow the Forsyths.” She’s since quit YouTube in order to focus on their family, she revealed in her last post a month ago.

Forsyth’s sweet residence, including her bedroom, was often in the background in her Instagram posts.

This photo of Austin, with one of the couple’s three children, was taken in the home’s open-plan living room, adjacent to the kitchen.

The 1,737-square-foot house has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. It is lovely and naturally lit, with an open kitchen, dining space, and living area. A neutral palette of mostly white and gray is found throughout the remodeled interior.

Said to be “brimming with character,” the home boasts wood floors throughout, large windows, and built-ins. The modern kitchen includes an island with bar seating, granite counters, and stainless steel appliances.

Steps away, the living space includes a fireplace with a stone surround, and there’s also room for a dining table. A large porch expands the living space and offers a perch for entertaining or simply enjoying the natural surroundings.

There’s tile flooring in one of the updated bathrooms, while the primary bath has oversized, marblelike tile in the shower and vanity lights over the sink. There’s also a laundry room, ceiling fans, and floor-to-ceiling drapes on the windows.

Set on nearly an acre, the property opens directly onto Kessler Mountain Regional Park, which offers walking and biking trails.

Plus, the convenient locale is just 2.5 miles from the University of Arkansas and 1.5 miles from the freeway.

Duggar, 26, is the fifth of 19 children belonging to parents Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar , who starred in the hit reality series, “19 kids and Counting.”

The TLC show ran for seven years until its cancellation in 2015. The show followed the Duggar family and their ever-expanding brood. The network canceled the program following reports of sexual molestation allegations against the couple’s son, Josh Duggar .

A spinoff show featuring some of the family’s adult children—”Jill & Jessa: Counting On “— also included Joy Duggar and aired from 2015 to 2021.

The lasting power of ‘Sweet Valley Twins’: How my daughter and I are connecting over the series

Left: My daughter and me. Right: Our growing collection of "Sweet Valley Twins" and "Sweet Valley High" books (alongside some from "The Babysitter's Club," naturally).

When I was in the fourth grade, my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. “A writer,” I said without hesitation. “Just like Francine Pascal — and Elizabeth Wakefield.”

Francine Pascal was the writer and creator of the book series “Sweet Valley Twins” and “Sweet Valley High.” Elizabeth Wakefield, of course, is twin sister to Jessica Wakefield — the main characters of the beloved series. When I learned that Pascal passed away in July at 92, it hit me hard. Not only did I consider her my first writing teacher (though we never met), but also I’d just reconnected with Elizabeth and Jessica and the world of Sweet Valley by introducing them to my 9-year-old daughter, Mila.

“Sweet Valley ” was so ingrained in my childhood that it’s more to me than just a book series. The characters and storylines of “Sweet Valley Twins” were amalgamations of what was happening in my own life: friendship drama, gaining my parents’ trust and finding some independence, and, in the case of “Sweet Valley High,” what I hoped would happen one day: boyfriends, homecoming dances and driving a car or — gasp — a motorcycle. The bookshelf in my bedroom is where I proudly displayed my prized collection of “Sweet Valley” books. I used my allowance money to bring them home as soon as they hit bookstores.

“Sweet Valley Twins” always ended with a cliffhanger that teased the next book. This was 1986, a time before spoilers and Goodreads. Since I devoured each book in a single setting, I had to take matters into my own hands when it came to satisfying my craving for more. When I finished a book, I’d painstakingly write up “bonus chapters,” creating my own plot twists and fantasies instead of idly waiting for the next release. It was fan fiction before I knew what fan fiction was. I filled dozens of notebooks with the trials and tribulations that I dreamed up for Elizabeth and Jessica to go through next. I even sent some of my work to Pascal herself in the hopes she’d take my ideas into consideration. I’m sure my pages must have been lost in the mail.

Alas, as I got older, I grew apart from Elizabeth and Jessica, but I always carried a piece of the Wakefield twins with me. I became editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper and took it as the highest compliment when a friend said I was following in the footsteps of Elizabeth, who was also editor of her school paper in the books. As I moved to New York City and started a writing career , many friends liked to joke that I was a “Carrie Bradshaw,” but I always thought of myself as more of an Elizabeth.

I never thought my daughter would be interested in “Sweet Valley.” But when Mila became so enthralled with my other love, “The Babysitters Club,” that she dressed as Claudia for “Character Day” at school, I wondered if she’d connect with the Wakefield twins, too.

All my “Sweet Valley” books were donated years ago (against my will, when I went off to college), but thanks to eBay and Etsy, I’ve begun rebuilding my collection.

My daughter, Mila, proudly shows off our book collection.

Though my daughter is almost 10 years old, reading out loud to her is still a cherished part of her nightly bedtime routine. And it was the perfect way for me to introduce her to the Wakefield twins. I have to admit, it took a bit for my Gen Alpha daughter to find her groove with the totally '80s lifestyle in Sweet Valley. Some of her questions were simply reflections of the books’ age (“Sweet Valley High” debuted in 1983 and “Sweet Valley Twins” in 1986): “Why are they using typewriters instead of laptops?” “Why is Jessica leaving Elizabeth a note? Can’t she just call her cell phone?”

But other questions initiated deeper conversations. We were on page two of the very first “Sweet Valley Twins” book, “Best Friends,” when I gasped, unsure if I should skip over a conversation where Jessica complains to Elizabeth about their classmate looking “fat” in her leotard. “They shouldn’t let a tub like her take ballet,” I read in practically a whisper, watching my daughter’s eyes widen with horror. The upside was that the moment prompted Mila to go on a rant about how “fat” is a terrible word and “everyone’s body is beautiful” before we put the book down for a heart-to-heart about acceptance and not judging others by their looks .

I would argue that the 'Sweet Valley' books are timeless. The struggles and growing pains of tweens and teens don’t change even if their fashion, slang and technology do.

But, while Jessica’s prejudice against weight is not where the outdated, cringey moments in the series ends, I would argue that the “Sweet Valley” books are timeless. The struggles and growing pains of tweens and teens don’t change even if their fashion, slang and technology do. Elizabeth and Jessica, though identical on the outside, are complete opposites. They’re lucky enough to be sisters and best friends — but still struggle with growing apart and embracing separate interests. I’ve watched this start happening with my daughter and her own friends — and they’re not even in middle school yet. Elizabeth, as the responsible one, always bails impulsive Jessica out of trouble. Elizabeth dreams of being a writer while Jessica just wants to be popular. In “Sweet Valley Twins,” Elizabeth starts a school newspaper while Jessica is initiated into a clique of snobby girls called “The Unicorns” (they were ahead of their time, paving the way for Regina George and “ The Plastics ”).

As a kid, I always had an “Elizabeth” sitting on one shoulder encouraging me to read, write and behave, while a “Jessica” sat on the other, daring me to disobey my parents, wear a little lip gloss and talk to cute boys. Elizabeth was my soul sister but it never stopped me from wondering, “What would Jessica do?”

I could tell my daughter was inspired by Elizabeth yet awestruck by Jessica, just as I’d been.  In one book, Jessica tells an elaborate lie so she can see her favorite singer, Johnny Buck, in concert even though her parents already told her she was too young to go. “Mommy, didn’t you do the same thing?” my daughter gleefully asked me. It’s a famous story in my family about a complex plan I hatched so I could attend a meet-and-greet event with Brian Austin Green after my parents said I too was too young to go. Things went so horribly awry that I got caught by my parents and needed assistance from the police to safely get home. I’m sure if my daughter ever pulls a stunt like that, I’ll initially be angry or disappointed. But I also know it’s a rite of passage to embrace your inner “Jessica.” In fact, it’s a rite of passage to discover the world of Sweet Valley. And now that my daughter has met the twins, perhaps she’ll have a few chapters of her own to write for them.

Dr. Moses publishes essay in STAT on the history of stigma amid rising rates of syphilis

Aug 14, 2024, 10:14 AM by Cortney Martin

On May 30, 2024, IBBH Assistant Professor Dr. Jacob D. Moses and Dr. Allan Brandt (Harvard University) published an essay, “ Stigma and the Return of Syphilis, ” in the health news outlet STAT. Syphilis, one of the oldest infections known to humans, has returned to the U.S. at epidemic rates that have been climbing since 2001. In 2022, the last year with complete data, the highest number of infections were recorded in more than 70 years. Stemming the return of syphilis will take more than manufacturing more penicillin. It will require counteracting stigma, a longstanding problem that has resulted in critical failures in health care access and delivery.

The 10 Best K-Dramas To Watch if You Like 'Sweet Home'

Based on a popular webtoon, Sweet Home follows the trials and tribulations of residents within an apartment complex as monsters occupy and creep around and inside the premises. It’s up to the main cast of characters to survive against these creatures or otherwise risk turning into one. Similarly to Sweet Home , plenty of horror K-dramas are adapted from brilliantly written online novels and comics, becoming some of the best horror shows and thrillers to date.

While Sweet Home focuses on the horrors behind being contained in a single place and having to survive in such a place, it also terrifies viewers and fans alike with its uncanny and disturbingly warped creatures that have suddenly ravaged the world. Although Sweet Home is a terrifying story with a unique concept, plenty of other thrilling and horrifying K-dramas exist that offer disturbing and mentally-terrifying experiences. Ranging from popular adaptions to K-drama-original ideas, here are some of the best shows to watch after Sweet Home .

10 'Revenant' (2023)

Developed by lee ok-gyu.

Kim Tae-ri staring absentmindedly at the camera, Revenant

Student Gu San-yeong ( Kim Tae-ri ) works during the day and studies for a civil service exam at night. However, one day she is possessed by an evil spirit, and folklore professor Yeom Hae-sang ( Oh Jung-se ) can see spirits, ghosts, and other paranormal phenomena; his special sight has been with him since childhood when he saw his mother murdered by a demon. Together, Hae-sang and San-yeong both investigate the mysterious deaths that have taken place in the city.

Though not filled with typical gore that is found in horror, Revenant is a suspenseful K-drama that will give viewers the chills upon first watch. Unlike most horror films and shows, Revenant is more focused on developing a spine-crawling atmosphere that will spook viewers, all while using limited jumpscares. This is something that Sweet Home also excels at, considering most of the setting initially takes place in a residential building, the atmosphere is a top priority for Sweet Home , and for atmospheric horror fans, Revenant is definitely worth the watch.

9 'Island' (2022)

Directed by bae jong.

Won Mi-Ho ( Lee Da-hee ) is the daughter of the CEO of Daehan Group and its eventual heiress. After a big mistake involving her aunt, Mi-Ho is sent to Jeju Island, where she then works as a teacher. Not too long after her arrival, she encounters demons, and she is chased by them before being saved by Van ( Kim Nam-gil ), an immortal man who was raised to protect the world against the paranormal. Meanwhile, Johan ( Cha Eun-woo ) is a priest who performs exorcisms, and he joins Van and Mi-Ho in their fight against evil.

Island was initially a graphic novel of the same name, and then it turned into a webtoon that was published on Naver Webtoon . Though it's not necessarily frightening or scary, it is suspenseful and deals with the evil within the world, which are demons. Though vastly different from Sweet Home in terms of genre and atmosphere, Island is a fantastical watch for those who are fans of fantasy, action, and complex storytelling. Not to mention, the main cast performs excellently, providing depth to their characters and making viewers grow attached to their unique dynamics.

8 'The Guest' (2018)

Created by choi jin-hee.

Psychic Yoon Hwa-pyung ( Kim Dong-wook ) is the son of a shaman and can see ghosts. After being possessed by a ghost by the name of Park Il-do. Both Hwa-pyung's mother and grandmother die, and he is exorcised by Priest Yang ( Ahn Nae-sang ) and Priest Choi ( Yoon Jong-suk ), a priest-in-training. Consequently, Priest Choi is possessed, and he murders his family at home while his younger brother Choi Yoon ( Kim Jae-wook ) hides. Meanwhile, Kang Gil-young (Jung Eun-chae) and her mother, a policewoman, drive by Choi Yoon's house, and her mother saves him before she is murdered by Priest Choi. The traumatized kids are then separated, and they meet again 20 years later. This time, they work together to fight crime caused by the supernatural.

It engages the viewers almost immediately upon the first episode, and it keeps the viewer on edge throughout the entirety of the show.

The Guest is an extremely dark series following the lives of three traumatized characters who reconvene at a later point in time. It engages the viewers almost immediately upon the first episode, and it keeps the viewer on edge throughout the entirety of the show. The Guest is definitely not for the weak-stomached, and The Guest is a hidden gem. Anyone who's big on horror and dark stories will undoubtedly love The Guest .

Editor's Note: The Guest is currently not available for streaming or purchase.

7 'Kingdom' (2019)

Created by kim eun-hee.

A horde of bloody zombies running forward in Kingdom

During the Joseon Dynasty, the king is presumed to have smallpox. Crown Prince Lee Chang suspects that his father the King is much more ill than previously thought. Though only a select few are allowed to see the king, Lee Chang sneaks into the palace for investigation purposes. However, he is caught, and Lee Chang proceeds to flee the palace with his bodyguard in search of the royal physician. Meanwhile, the zombified king remains at the palace, and the outbreak spreads throughout the villages.

Kingdom is a one-of-a-kind K-drama featuring zombies in a period piece. Sure, Kingdom features obvious zombie tropes; however, this K-drama is filled with tons of twists that viewers won't see coming. Zombies, Joseon dynasty, what more could a K-drama and horror fan want?

6 'Hellbound' (2021)

Directed by yeon sang-ho.

Park Jeong-min looks on with the sunlight behind him

In the years 2022-27, prophecies are delivered to specific people, and these decrees condemn these same individuals to Hell at a specific point in time. When it’s that person’s time, monsters will maul their bodies. However, the New Truth Society, a religious group, rises with its own idea of what justice is.

Hellbound is a captivating K-drama that will keep viewers glued to their seats throughout the entirety of the show, packed to the brim with suspense. Like Sweet Home , the story is well-written, creating an exciting premise that viewers will want more of. For those who enjoy thrillers and action, this K-drama is worth a watch.

5 'Parasyte: The Grey' (2024)

A parasite in Parasyte: The Grey

Based on the manga series of the same name, Parasyte: The Grey is about the rise of body snatchers that take over humans, kill them, and then use their bodies for shape-shifting purposes. The show follows Jeong Su-in ( Jeon So-nee ), a young woman who lives an ordinary life as a cashier at a supermarket. However, when she is stabbed by a customer, she wakes up a hospital with a newfound discovery: she is a Parasite. However, fortunately for Su-in, the parasitic creature, named Heidi, could not complete its full takeover.

Like the original manga, Parasyte: The Grey has a very interesting and complex set of characters that viewers will grow to love. It is not a retelling of the original story; rather, it is a spinoff that takes place in South Korea. The CGI, similarly to Sweet Home , really allows viewers to visualize the creatures that are attacking the main cast of characters. Like Sweet Home , Parasyte is a fun yet disturbing show that will unsettle viewers for days.

4 'Gyeongseong Creature' (2023)

Directed by chung dong-yoon and roh young-sub.

Han So-hee holds a lit match in Netflix's Gyeongseong Creature.

It’s 1945 during the Japanese occupation in Gyeongseong (later known as Seoul), House of Golden Treasure pawnshop owner Jang Tae-sang ( Park Seo-joon ) encounters a strange creature alongside. Yoon Chae-ok ( Han So-hee ), a tracker, who is searching for her mother, joins Tae-sang in confronting this creature that was born from experiments conducted within Ongseong Hospital.

Though a bit slow at first, Gyeongseong Creature very quickly establishes its premise through its introduction of the cast and creature that will undoubtedly haunt viewers for days. The CGI is one of the best parts, seeing the creature in all its darkness and greed is the most terrifying part of the show. It’s reminiscent of the uncanny and unsettling figures and monsters in Sweet Home, rooting fear deep into the hearts of viewers. Though, be wary of Gyeongseong’s graphic nature.

Gyeongseong Creature TV Show Poster

3 'goedam' (2020), directed by hong won-ki.

An anthology of short horror stories, Goedam centers on creepy urban legends about ghosts that haunt the schools and streets of Korea. Ranging from high school disappearances and basic paranormal possessions, Goedam seeks to terrify its viewers.

Though short, Goedam is an excellent watch for those who want quick scares and terrifying nightmares. The show bases itself on atmospheric horror, relying a little bit on jump scares to get the job done, but all-in-all, these short stories will easily terrify. For those who enjoyed the atmospheric uncanniness of Sweet Home , Goedam is an excellent and eerie watch.

2 Happiness (2021)

Created by yang ji-eul and lee myung-han.

Han Hyo-joo and Park Hyung-sik in Happiness

In the distant future, determined and intelligent Sae-bom ( Han Hye-joo ) is a member of the KP-SOU and confronts a Special Operations Unit member with the Lytta Virus (otherwise known as mad person disease). This confrontation leads her to meet Tae-seok ( Jo Woo-Jin ), where she learns she is immune to the virus and its seeming zombification. Sae-bom then strikes a deal with Tae-seok, allowing her to live in a newly developed high-rise apartment complex with high school friend Yi-hyun ( Park Hyung-sik ). All is fine and well, at least, until the virus begins to circulate in their high-rise.

Don’t mistake the positive-associated name with anything less than a thriller. Although Happiness is focused on a virus and is more reminiscent of All of Us Are Dead and Flu , Happiness’s story is contained in a single building, which is familiar to the tone that Sweet Home develops. Through the setting—much like Sweet Home — Happiness establishes tension and fear as its main cast struggles to survive.

1 All of Us Are Dead (2022)

Created by chun sung-il, lee jae-kyoo, and kim nam-su.

A group of friends in All of Us Are Dead look at something off-camera in shock

Due to a horrific experiment caused by a science teacher in the South Korean city of Hyosan, a high school is overrun by a zombie outbreak, turning many students into zombies. This outbreak spreads to the city eventually, and while authorities struggle to contain the virus, the students are all on their own as they try to survive this outbreak.

All of Us Are Dead is one of the more popular, apocalyptic K-dramas. While zombies are not new to horror audiences, the setting is what makes All of Us Are Dead stand out the most, considering it takes place primarily within an isolated school setting. This type of setting can create tough situations among the large cast of characters, as betrayal and distrust are on the rise among the students. This type of tense atmospheric horror is not foreign to Sweet Home ; rather, Sweet Home is dependent on telling its story through a contained setting, and viewers who love Sweet Home will also love All of Us Are Dead .

Sweet Home Season 3 Ending Explained: What Happens To Cha Hyun-su

Mr. throwback cast & character guide, predicting who wins every fight cobra kai set up in season 6.

  • Sweet Home season 3 lacks a definitive lead couple, deviating from Song Kang's typical romantic roles.
  • Cha Hyun-su and Eun-yu did not become a couple in Sweet Home.
  • Sweet Home stands out as one of Song Kang's most unique shows, showcasing his versatility beyond traditional romantic roles.

Sweet Home season 3 concluded the story of Cha Hyun-su and broke a career trend for Song Kang, who has starred in many popular K-dramas since 2019. After missing most of season 2, Cha Hyun-su returned in Sweet Home 3 and received the attention the character deserved. Sweet Home ’s final season also saw the return of Lee Do-hyun’s Eun-hyeok , whose interactions with Hyun-su were great as usual. Whereas season 2 introduced new characters and moved away from the Green Home survivors, season 3 put Hyun-su, Eun-hyeok, and Go Min-si’s Eun-yu back into the spotlight.

Known as the Son of Netflix due to how most of his shows are available on the platform, Song Kang has crafted an incredible career in a relatively short period. The actor has played several leading roles already, from helpless romantics to demons and everything in between. Which is the best Song Kang K-drama couple is open for debate, but romance has often been an important part of his shows. However, this was not the case for Sweet Home , even though it suggested Hyun-su and Eun-yu were going to be a thing.

Custom image of Yi-su and Hyun-su in Sweet Home season 3

Sweet Home season 3, episode 8 concluded the Netflix K-drama with an action-packed finale full of twists and bittersweet moments involving Hyun-su.

Sweet Home Ended Without Having A Definitive Lead Couple

Sweet home hinted at romance but didn’t really have any couples.

Now that Sweet Home is over , it has become the first K-drama starring Song Kang not to have a clear lead couple since 2021. Love Alarm (2019), Song Kang’s proper K-drama debut and Netflix’s first original Korean series was about a complicated love triangle involving Hwan Sun-oh and his best friend. It’s no surprise that a show called Love Alarm was a love story, with the series launching Song Kang as one of the most prominent leading actors of his generation. Navillera (2021), on the other hand, was about the friendship between Chae-rok and Deok-chul.

Most Song Kang K-dramas have included romance elements, which is why Sweet Home never confirming Hyun-su’s love interest was so surprising.

Also in 2021, Nevertheless focused on two people learning how to love again despite their previous experiences and insecurities. Forecasting Love and Weather (2022) was a more traditional rom-com K-drama. The controversial relationship between Lee Shi-woo and Jin Ha-kyung set the narrative for the series, which explored romance in the workplace among other tropes. Lastly, My Demon (2023) was a hilarious romantic comedy about a demon and a CEO falling for each other. Most Song Kang K-dramas have included romance elements, which is why Sweet Home never confirming Hyun-su’s love interest was so surprising.

Why Song Kang’s Cha Hyun-su Didn’t Have A Love Interest In Sweet Home

Hyun-su & eun-yu were close but never became a couple.

Hyun-su and Eun-yu from Sweet Home in front of a custom background

Sweet Home is a horror show with a lot of action and elements of science fiction and the supernatural, meaning it is very different from Song Kang’s other K-dramas. Romance was never expected to be a major part of Sweet Home , which does not mean the show did not have the opportunity to explore romantic relationships. In fact, Sweet Home teased several times that Hyun-su and Eun-yu had feelings for each other. This was a significant deviation from the Sweet Home webtoon, in which Hyun-su is closer to Yi-su than to Eun-yu.

Song Kang and Go Min-si were both in Love Alarm before reuniting for Sweet Home .

After Sweet Home season 1 made little effort to establish a connection between Hyun-su and Yi-su, I assumed the show was going to make Eun-yu his love interest. While the series did have Hyun-su and Eun-yu subtly acknowledge their feelings for each other, their relationship remained platonic throughout the entire show. Hyun-su and Eun-yu deeply care about each other and are willing to risk their lives for each other, but they do not become a couple by the end of the show. Sweet Home season 3 ends with Eun-yu, now a neohuman, learning how to have feelings again.

Sweet Home Will Always Be One Of Song Kang’s Most Unique K-Dramas

Sweet home stands out among the actor’s other shows.

The fact that Cha Hyun-su is so different from Song Kang’s other K-drama characters makes me confident that Sweet Home will always be one of his most special shows. Song Kang has shown his versatility over the years and added a lot of personality to his most traditional K-drama roles. Still, a young adult fighting a darker version of himself while trying to save his friends and the world from a monster apocalypse is a role that not many actors get to play. Song Kang’s only other supernatural series was My Demon , which was a comedy.

Even without a definitive romance, the relationship between Hyun-su and Eun-yu was compelling and made for some emotional scenes, especially in season 3. What Song Kang’s next K-drama will be remains to be announced, and it might take a while considering he is currently completing his mandatory military service. After playing Cha Hyun-su for three seasons across four years, I’m excited to see which roles the Sweet Home star will tackle next. Netflix’s two original webseries starring Song Kang were both great, but he has also shined in more traditional K-dramas.

Prosecutors seek detention for Pentagon employee charged with mishandling classified documents

  • Copy Link copied

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A judge ruled Tuesday over prosecutors’ objections that a Defense Department civilian employee who is a U.S.-Turkish dual citizen can remain free on home detention while he awaits trial on accusations he mishandled classified documents.

Gokhan Gun, 50, of Falls Church, was arrested Friday outside his home and charged with mishandling classified material.

When he was arrested, Gun was on his way to the airport for trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, according to an FBI affidavit. He was carrying papers including a document that was marked Top Secret.

Gun told authorities he was going to Mexico on a fishing trip. Prosecutors say he agreed to a search of his home. Inside they found other classified documents.

At a detention hearing Tuesday in federal court in Alexandria, prosecutors asked that Gun remain jailed while awaiting trial. They said they may bring additional charges, including possible charges under the Espionage Act, if the ongoing investigation can prove that he not only mishandled classified documents but sought to disseminate documents relevant to the national defense to a foreign power.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Rodregous said the fact that Gun was arrested carrying classified documents, as well as his intelligence-community credentials, on the way to the airport for a purported Mexican fishing trip was circumstantial evidence of his intent to distribute the documents.

Image

“You don’t need your intelligence-community credentials to go fishing,” Rodregous said.

But U.S. Magistrate Judge Ivan Davis said it was “too far of a leap” to assume that his trip to Mexico was connected to his mishandling of documents. He said until the government provides stronger evidence, the case is no different than any other classified-documents case and the presumption is that Gun should be free while he awaits trial.

Despite Davis’ ruling, it appears unlikely Gun will go free any time soon. Prosecutors indicated they will appeal Davis’ ruling to a district court judge, and as a result Davis delayed implementing his order.

Davis also required that Gun be subject to home detention and GPS monitoring if and when he is released pretrial.

Gun is a electrical engineer with the Joint Warfare Analysis Center and has worked there since September. He holds a Top Secret security clearance.

In court papers, prosecutors say he printed out classified documents at his office, often late in the day when co-workers had left, and took them home.

He was born in Turkey and became a U.S. citizen in 2021, according to court papers. In the past 20 years, he has taken 15 overseas trips, including seven trips to Turkey, where his parents live, according to the affidavit.

Gun’s attorney, Rammy Barbari, declined comment after Tuesday’s hearing.

To identify a causal impact of program participation, we instrument based on historical bank relationships with the Small Business Administration and the Federal Reserve discount window prior to the onset of the pandemic. Elevated bank participation in both programs was positively associated with a substantial cumulative increase in small business lending growth. However, we find a negative impact of both programs during the final year of our sample, suggesting that the increase may not prove permanent. Our results are driven by the small and medium-sized banks in our sample, which are not stress-tested and hence not included in Y-14 banking data, illustrating the importance of considering small and medium-sized banks in evaluating the performance of SME lending programs.
