As I’ve grown up, many things have come and gone. Everything has changed. The things I liked to eat, to wear, to watch. The people I put myself around. The ways I think and feel and do. The one thing that has stayed the same is my love for musical theatre. I have always loved being able to remove myself from any situation, just for a couple of hours and step into the shoes of another person, another character. I have always loved the way a song can get across an emotion that a million words could not. I don’t believe there is anything else I could in life that would fulfill me as much as performing would and I believe that this course is the next step I need to take to achieve this.

I have been involved in amateur theatre from the age of eleven years old, my first role being Mrs Potts in ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ my schools musical. Once I got a taste of being onstage, I couldn’t stop – I have gone on to be lucky enough to play some amazing roles in my local theatre, my personal favourites being Justice Charlier in ‘Rock of Ages’ and Mabel Washington in ‘Fame.’ I have also been involved in the ensembles of many shows. This shows that I am able to confidently take a lead, but can also take a step back and work as part of a team for the good of the show. I am a strong character actor.

I have studied Drama & Theatre at York St. John University for three years already, as well of being an extremely active member of the Musical Production Society at the same university – in 2019, being elected as the Director of the same society. Because of this, I feel that I have learned some valuable skills that would make me an excellent candidate for this course. I am able to express myself confidently in front of a large group of people, take pride in my work and am an extremely hard worker. I have worked with many different types of text and script, showing that I can work with what I am given. I have also taken modules such as Funny Words, a comedic writing and performance class where we created much of the script through improvisation – something I am now extremely confident with. Being able to step up as Director shows that I can take on roles of responsibility and manage my time adequately.

My third year at York St. John University required me to write a dissertation and create a final, independent performance – both of these were based around exposing sexism and discrimination within the arts. I believe that the arts should not discriminate; nobody should be given more or less opportunity or treated any differently because of something they can’t control – I know Mountview shares these views and morals, as stated on their web page, which is why I know it would be the perfect school for me.

I have had singing lessons from the age of eleven years old and have studied drama since Year 7 in my secondary school, up to studying it in university. I am so passionate about musical theatre and truly believe that the world is too – that it will always be around, proven by the fact that there are classic musicals such as ‘Les Miserables’, that have been running for thirty-five years, running at the same time as new musicals such as ‘Waitress’ or ‘Six.’ I dream of being able to perform, to bring a new spin to the old classics or to be the first to step into the shoes of an amazing new character and given the chance, I would love to further my education and ability at a school as widely renowned as Mountview.
