Resolution ( 5/14 ) requested the Executive Director of the UNEP to convene an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, which is to be based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the full life cycle of plastic, including its production, design and disposal

To prevent and address this pressing issue, the Global Partnership on Plastic Pollution and Marine Litter (GPML) was formed in 2012. The GPML is a multi-stakeholder partnership which brings together all the actors working on plastic pollution and marine litter reduction. The GPML has played a major role in bringing together different actors to strengthen coordination, implement and scale up efforts to tackle plastic pollution and marine litter worldwide. The GPML now has over 630 member organizations, established four Communities of Practice (CoPs), which support the convening and coordination of multiple actors with the aim of enhancing co-solution efforts, six established Regional Nodes , and a dedicated knowledge-sharing and multi-stakeholder collaboration tool, the GPML Digital Platform . UNEP's Source-to-Sea Pollution Unit provides secretariat services to the GPML.

Some of the activities that are being undertaken by the Unit is provision of support to countries through the:

Capacity development to catalyze actions and commitments at the national and global level to reduce plastic pollution including in the marine environment” project, which aims to support countries undertake enabling activities to successfully address plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, through the development and implementation of legal and collaborative frameworks and strategic planning, such as through the development of a national source inventory and national roadmaps/strategies/plans on plastic pollution and marine litter;
Promotion of Action Against Marine Plastic Litter in Asia project, which aims to promote science-based and evidence-driven action to reduce and prevent the influx of plastic into Asian rivers through the formulation of bankable project proposal in countries in Asia and strengthening regional, national, and local capacities for enhanced systematic approach for plastic pollution management.

Other activities include the continued development of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)on plastic pollution, and a masterclass on Unnecessary, Avoidable and Problematic (UAP) Plastic Products and Polymers which aim to strengthen scientific knowledge, inform stakeholders and raise awareness of plastic pollution and marine litter.

This work contributes to component 3 of the UNEP One Plastics Initiative, which aims to tackle plastic pollution by creating an environment of empowering policies that enable a radical market transformation towards a resource-efficient circular economy of plastics.

It is impossible to imagine how much pollution affects one's quality of life. The process occurs in mysterious ways, sometimes unobservable to the naked eye. Similar to the pollutants that are polluting the air and increasing carbon dioxide levels, pollutants pose a great threat to humans. Additionally, the water will be polluted due to industrial development, religious practices and other practices leading to a shortage of drinking water. The need for water is essential to our existence. A waste dump that ends up in the soil eventually becomes toxic because of the way it is disposed of. In the future, we will no longer have fertile soil to grow crops on if the rate of land pollution continues. We must take immediate steps to reduce the level of land pollution.

What are the Best Ways to Reduce Pollution?

It is important to take action as soon as possible to prevent or reduce pollution after learning of the harmful effects of pollution. Taking public transportation or carpooling reduces vehicle emissions, hence reducing air pollution. Aside from reducing air and noise pollution, avoiding firecrackers at festivals and celebrations may also reduce air pollution. Recycling is essential to reducing air pollution in general. It pollutes the oceans and land when used plastic ends up in them.

After using these utensils, be sure to reuse them as long as you can, rather than throw them away after using them. As well as encouraging everyone to plant more trees, which absorb harmful gases and clean the air, we need to encourage everyone to plant more trees. At a national level, the government should limit fertilizer use to ensure the nutrient content of the soil. Further, pollution of oceans and rivers must be dealt with by preventing industries from dumping their waste into them.

The bottom line is that all pollutant types are hazardous and have serious consequences. Whether it is a personal initiative or an industry-wide initiative, everyone must take steps to change. It is necessary to join forces now since solving this problem will require a collective effort. Additionally, such human actions are causing the deaths of innocent animals. We must all take a stand and speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves in order to protect this planet from pollution.

The world creates 57 million tons of plastic pollution every year and spreads it from the deepest oceans to the highest mountaintop to the inside of people’s bodies, according to a new study that also said more than two-thirds of it comes from the Global South.

It’s enough pollution each year — about 52 million metric tons — to fill New York City’s Central Park with plastic waste as high as the Empire State Building, according to researchers at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. They examined waste produced on the local level at more than 50,000 cities and towns across the world for a study in Wednesday’s journal Nature.

The study examined plastic that goes into the open environment, not plastic that goes into landfills or is properly burned. For 15% of the world’s population, government fails to collect and dispose of waste, the study’s authors said — a big reason Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa produce the most plastic waste. That includes 255 million people in India, the study said.

Lagos, Nigeria, emitted the most plastic pollution of any city, according to study author Costas Velis, a Leeds environmental engineering professor. The other biggest plastic polluting cities are New Delhi; Luanda, Angola; Karachi, Pakistan and Al Qahirah, Egypt.

India leads the world in generating plastic pollution, producing 10.2 million tons a year (9.3 million metric tons), far more than double the next big-polluting nations, Nigeria and Indonesia. China, often villainized for pollution, ranks fourth but is making tremendous strides in reducing waste, Velis said. Other top plastic polluters are Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia and Brazil. Those eight nations are responsible for more than half of the globe’s plastic pollution, according to the study’s data.

The United States ranks 90th in plastic pollution with more than 52,500 tons (47,600 metric tons) and the United Kingdom ranks 135th with nearly 5,100 tons (4,600 metric tons), according to the study.

In 2022, most of the world’s nations agreed to make the first legally binding treaty on plastics pollution, including in the oceans. Final treaty negotiations take place in South Korea in November.

The study used artificial intelligence to concentrate on plastics that were improperly burned — about 57% of the pollution — or just dumped. In both cases incredibly tiny microplastics, or nanoplastics, are what turn the problem from a visual annoyance at beaches and a marine life problem to a human health threat, Velis said.

Several studies this year have looked at how prevalent microplastics are in our drinking water and in people’s tissue, such as hearts , brains and testicles , with doctors and scientists still not quite sure what it means in terms of human health threats.

“The big time bomb of microplastics are these microplastics released in the Global South mainly,” Velis said. “We already have a huge dispersal problem. They are in the most remote places ... the peaks of Everest , in the Mariana Trench in the ocean, in what we breathe and what we eat and what we drink.”

He called it “everybody’s problem” and one that will haunt future generations.

“We shouldn’t put the blame, any blame, on the Global South,” Velis said. “And we shouldn’t praise ourselves about what we do in the Global North in any way.”

It’s just a lack of resources and ability of government to provide the necessary services to citizens, Velis said.

Outside experts worried that the study’s focus on pollution, rather than overall production, lets the plastics industry off the hook. Making plastics emits large amounts of greenhouse gas that contribute to climate change .

“These guys have defined plastic pollution in a much narrower way, as really just macroplastics that are emitted into the environment after the consumer, and it risks us losing our focus on the upstream and saying, hey now all we need to do is manage the waste better,” said Neil Tangri, senior director of science and policy at GAIA, a global network of advocacy organizations working on zero waste and environmental justice initiatives. “It’s necessary but it’s not the whole story.”

Theresa Karlsson, science and technical advisor to International Pollutants Elimination Network, another coalition of advocacy groups on environment, health and waste issues, called the volume of pollution identified by the study “alarming” and said it shows the amount of plastics being produced today is “unmanageable.”

But she said the study misses the significance of the global trade in plastic waste that has rich countries sending it to poor ones. The study said plastic waste trade is decreasing, with China banning waste imports. But Karlsson said overall waste trade is actually increasing and likely plastics with it. She cited EU waste exports going from 110,000 tons (100,000 metric tons) in 2004 to 1.4 million tons (1.3 million metric tons) in 2021.

Velis said the amount of plastic waste traded is small. Kara Lavender Law, an oceanography professor at the Sea Education Association who wasn’t involved in the study, agreed, based on U.S. plastic waste trends. She said this was otherwise one of the more comprehensive studies on plastic waste.

Officials in the plastics industry praised the study.

“This study underscores that uncollected and unmanaged plastic waste is the largest contributor to plastic pollution and that prioritizing adequate waste management is critical to ending plastic pollution,” Chris Jahn, council secretary of the International Council on Chemical Associations, said in a statement. In treaty negotiations, the industry opposes a cap on plastic production.

The United Nations projects that plastics production is likely to rise from about 440 million tons (400 million metric tons) a year to more than 1,200 million tons (1,100 million metric tons, saying “our planet is choking in plastic.”

Humans Pollute the Environment With 57 Million Tons of Plastic Each Year, Study Suggests

Scientists used A.I. to model local waste management in 50,000 municipalities worldwide and say the results suggest a need to improve access to waste collection systems

If you organized the plastic pollution that entered the environment in 2020 in a line, it could circle the Earth more than 1,500 times. Simply dumped into a pile, the refuse would fill up New York City’s Central Park in a layer as high as the Empire State Building.

Put another way, that’s about 57 million tons (52 million metric tons) of plastic waste that was not properly disposed of—and pieces of it could now be floating in the ocean, sitting at the top of a mountain or even infiltrating your bloodstream . In a new study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, scientists tallied these numbers, creating the first-ever global plastics pollution inventory.

“It hasn’t been done before,” study co-author Costas Velis , an expert in resource efficiency systems at the University of Leeds in England, tells New Scientist ’s Madeleine Cuff.

Researchers used artificial intelligence to model waste management in more than 50,000 municipalities around the world and predict the total amount of plastic that enters the environment.

The plastic pollution measured in the study represents just one-fifth of the global total of plastic waste. But the results, the authors argue, demonstrate how improving access to waste collection services across the world can reduce the scale of the problem.

“Uncollected waste is the biggest source of plastic pollution, with at least 1.2 billion people living without waste collection services forced to ‘self-manage’ waste, often by dumping it on land, in rivers, or burning it in open fires,” Josh Cottom , lead author of the study and a research fellow in plastics pollution at the University of Leeds, says in a statement .

This “self-managed” plastic waste makes up more than two-thirds of the modeled plastic pollution, per the statement. Plastic burning has become a substantial problem, with 30 million tons of plastic burned in 2020 without environmental oversight—an uncontrolled process that can release carcinogens, particulate pollution and heavy metals that have severe consequences for human health, alongside greenhouse gas emissions.

The study also calculated the largest contributors to plastic pollution in the world: India is in first place, producing 10.2 million tons a year; Nigeria is in second; Indonesia is in third; and China—which had been ranked in first place according to other models—instead comes in fourth. The U.S. ranks 90th, with more than 52,500 tons of plastic pollution produced annually. In the words of Interesting Engineering ’s Sujita Sinha, the findings outline a “trash apocalypse.”

The ranking highlights a large gap in plastic pollution between the Global North and Global South. Even though low- and middle-income countries produce less plastic waste in total, a larger portion of it is disposed of improperly, which overall becomes a greater source of plastic pollution. Even low-income countries with limited plastic pollution are considered hotspots when scientists analyze their plastic pollution per capita. Higher-income countries, on the other hand, produce more plastic waste but have more efficient waste disposal systems, so less of it turns into pollution.

However, “we shouldn’t put the blame, any blame, on the Global South,” Velis tells Associated Press ’ Seth Borenstein. “And we shouldn’t praise ourselves about what we do in the Global North in any way.” He adds that people’s ability to dispose of waste properly depends on their government’s power to provide the necessary services.

Therese Karlsson , science and technical advisor to International Pollutants Elimination Network, tells the Associated Press that the study doesn’t focus enough on the plastic waste trade through which wealthy countries send their waste to poorer ones. While the study says this trend is decreasing, Karlsson, who was not involved in the paper, disagrees on the basis that overall waste trade is increasing, which she adds is likely an indicator for an increase in plastic waste trade as well.

Now, the scientists are calling for waste collection to be seen as a basic necessity ahead of negotiations on a global plastic waste treaty planned for November in South Korea. The study also nearly coincides with Plastic Overshoot Day , which was projected for September 5—the day of the year where the Earth’s plastic waste production surpasses our waste management systems’ capacity to process it.

September 7 is the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. Each year, an estimated seven million people around the world are killed by effects from air pollution, which include cancer, strokes, and heart and lung diseases.

Around 99 percent of the world’s population lives in locations with air quality exceeding limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Pregnant people, children, older people, people with disabilities, and people with certain health conditions, such as respiratory and cardiovascular disease, are particularly at risk.

In 2022, Human Rights Watch documented air pollution’s devastating impact on people’s right to life and health in Bosnia and Herzegovina , where the World Bank estimates that 3,300 people die every year from exposure to air pollution. The country’s heavy reliance on coal for heating and electricity generation makes its cities some of the most polluted in the world during the winter months.

After publishing our findings, Human Rights Watch urged the minister for energy and mining in Republika Srpska (RS) entity to not issue a permit for a proposed coal plant, to which he agreed. Since then, the permit has been the subject of challenges in RS courts, with the entity’s Supreme Court upholding the suspension in July 2024.

Meanwhile, in March 2024, after a decade of activism by local civil society groups, a plant in Zenica, an industrial city 50 kilometers from Sarajevo, whose pollution comes from burning coal at high temperatures for steel production, ceased operation and was decommissioned after domestic and international pressure on Bosnian authorities.

A 2023 report by the Ministry of Environment, obtained by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project , revealed that the plant failed to mitigate industrial pollution.

Residents in Zenica are now breathing cleaner air. Dr. Samir Lemeš of Eko Forum Zenica recently told Human Rights Watch that after the plant’s closure, measured benzene, sulfur dioxide, and PM10 concentrations decreased below the safe limit for the first time in years.

Air pollution is an issue of global significance. Outdoor air pollution is directly linked to climate change as it is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Limiting the burning of coal, oil, and gas improves air quality and slows global warming. Breathing clean air is a fundamental human right, and the realization of that right impacts us all.

Global trends and current advances in slow/controlled-release fertilizers: a bibliometric analysis from 1990 to 2023.

1. Introduction

Provide a concise overview of the predominant types of SRFs/CRFs in contemporary use while detailing the challenges associated with these specific categories of fertilizers. Additionally, it highlights potential future developments in preparation techniques and emerging materials in the field.
Generate and visualize the publication trends regarding the literature associated with SRFs/CRFs.
Examine the collaborative networks among leading groups, as characterized by their geographic distribution, prominent collaborations, and highly productive authors in the field.
Examine the research focus and evolution of slow-release and controlled-release fertilizers (SRFs/CRFs) from 1990 to 2023.
Identify current research limitations and explore potential future directions in the field of SRFs/CRFs.
