Content [ ]

The channel's videos consists of short animated stories (10-15 minutes). The stories are often narrated by female voice Actors aka the main character of the stories (usually females). The stories usually contain topics such as issues with relatives or school, boyfriend drama, being/becoming a billionaire, becoming famous on social media, and more.

The channel was made after the success of Storybooth , another YouTube channel that uploads animated stories. Since then, MSA previously My Story Animated along with other channels such as Share My Story , Dory Story , and ACTUALLY HAPPENED began appearing. The difference between Storybooth and MSA previously My Story Animated is that Storybooth's stories are proven to be real, as they have a website to submit stories for them to be animated and uploaded and they don't use voice actors, while MSA previously My Story Animated isn't known to have a website to submit stories, they use a variety style of animation instead of sticking to the same animation and the voices of the narrators are presumably voice-acted.

Channels [ ]

After reaching 5 million subscribers, MSA previously My Story Animated started uploading on their new channels called "ZVOID" and "The Perfect Family.” Like MSA previously My Story Animated, the new channels also have stories uploaded on them, but with live action and the same theme they use for their main channel, like "My Dad Kicked me Out and He lived to regret it,” “My Mom Kicked Her Daughter Out Because She Is Pregnant,” and “She pretends to be his wife after he woke up from coma.” It is believed that many of these stories were copied from motivational YouTuber Dhar Mann due to his videos and the videos on MSA previously My Story Animated's new channels having similar titles.

The Perfect Family was created on December 7, 2020, and it appears to be a spoof or parody of popular sitcom Family Guy .

''[[https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYzEMRKqrh01-tauv7MYyVQ MSA previously My Story Animated]]'' is a Platform/YouTube channel that claims to animate real life stories sent to them by teenagers. However, it's widely suspected that many, if not most, of the stories are actually fictional, often due to the videos having extremely implausible or nonsensical things happen within them.
The idea of the channel is to tell outlandish stories that occur to teenage characters. They involve school, family secrets, and other real world topics, however they usually have an unusual twist to them.
Compare to similar channels ''WebAnimation/ActuallyHappened'' and ''WebAnimation/StoryTimeAnimated''.

** In the now-private video "I didn't know what music was until I was 17", the narrator goes through a lot of terrible things due to being a free spirit living in a compound of religious fundamentalists. But eventually, she manages to build a new life away from the compound with her family and becomes a successful comic artist.
* EngineeredPublicConfession: This is how Haley exposes her teacher Mrs. Hooper's {{blackmail}} of her in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgOoUjeknEk "i started an illegal business at school. my teacher joined!"]]. She talks to her about not wanting to pay her anymore, secretly recording the whole conversation using her cell phone and showing the recording to the headmaster.
* EntertaininglyWrong: Callie from "I Found out what my grandma do in her secret room, she made $$$" sees her grandmother spending time alone with a man named Gerald while all dressed up and assumes he's her lover, an assumption that seems to be confirmed when she checks her phone and sees him listed in her contacts as "#1 Man". It turned out the man was actually her manager ("#1 Man" was short for #1 Manager), but it's not hard to understand why she thought so.
* EntitledToHaveYou: James from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LG0MOxI4mzc "Me or My Bf"]] was obsessed with Andrea in high school, but she kept rejecting him. He later gets a job as a safari guide and ettempts to kidnap her when she and her boyfriend, Lucas, goes on a trip to the safari.
* EvilTwin: Tammy's secret twin sister Eliza from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5aX8KneteA "A Stranger Secretly Lived In My Home For 16 Years"]] turns out to be this.
* EvilUncle: In the story titled, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmNTmcWdmVE "My mom is controlling"]], it is revealed that the reason why Princess Aurora's parents kept her from leaving their castle for her entire life is because [[spoiler:when Aurora was a baby, her evil aunt abducted Aurora in an attempt to become next in line for the throne.]]
* FaintInShock: The unfortunate nurse in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ySwVhmwrJs "A Spider Has Been Living In My Ear For Years"]] when she realizes that there's a spider inside the narrator's ear.
* FakedKidnapping: The narrator of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiXxVXIdL1g "My Parents Had To Pay Me 40,000$ To Return Home!"]] plots her own kidnapping with her boyfriend Trevor, believing it would teach her parents a lesson.

* FantasyForbiddingFather: Sarah's parents in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZas1NIl9R4 "I Do The Opposite Of What My Mom Say"]] want her to be a lawyer just like them and forbid her from doing anything that might distract her from it, like making friends or having a job.
-->'''Sarah's Father:''' What are you doing, waisting time in a coffee shop? How's that going to help you become a lawyer?
* FatalFlaw: Dana from "i had no idea his trick could work" is very [[GreenEyedMonster prone to jealousy]], and at one point yells at her boyfriend Damien over something that happened in one of her dreams. Her jealousy eventually causes her to become a single mother.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Marcus from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WL4sXKlE-s "I Became Rich From Being A Psychopath"]] certainly knows how to charm people like many sociopaths, but he doesn't actually care about anybody else and is a habitual user and abuser of others.
* FellAsleepCrying: Tabitha from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnnPmiYxA_I "I Distracted Mom While Driving And The Worst Thing Happened"]] does this pretty frequently in the aftermath of her husband's death.
* FleetingPassionateHobbies: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23po9OHC1DM "Mom Did witchcraft In The Basement"]], the main character's mother keeps taking up new hobbies (everything from ghost hunting to building birdhouses), only to drop them once she decides she's not good enough at them. Her husband and daughter being rather judgmental about her attempts to find new ways of occupying herself didn't help.
* ForgottenBirthday: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE2fr4GRtfA "My Family disappeared After A Game Of Hide And Seek"]] is about a girl whose parents keep forgetting her birthdays... even though it's only one week away from her younger brother's birthday, which they consistently remember.
* FrameUp:
** Gary from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WE91UlK9V1Y "The police found something worth millions in my bag, OMG!"]] tries to frame the narrator for his theft of a vase by slipping an alarm into her handbag.
** Patti from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2wLMhR1RZk "My Older Sister Looks Younger Than Me, And I know Why"]] does this to her own sister, Lizzie. This was because she believed that Lizzie had [[InsaneTrollLogic 'stolen her life']]. Eventually, Patti admitted what she had done to her parents after her sister had a nasty accident.
** Another example for this trope comes from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfYGEk-ermE "my sister's bestie is obsessed with me"]] is that Ariel and her father framed her older brother's girlfriend Elsa by planting a piece of her mother's jewellery on her and making it look like she was a thief, all because he didn't want his own son to be stuck with a poor girl.
* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlNtoP8812g "I Was Shocked When I Found Out Why My Teacher is after Me"]] has a girl named Helen whose teacher, a woman Ms. Smith, is nice to most people [[JerkassToOne but really has it out for her]]. She eventually finds out that it's because she gets emotionally abused by [[DomesticAbuse her husband]] and [[ObnoxiousInLaws his mother]], the latter of whom is ''also'' named Helen. While the narrator Helen now knows why Ms. Smith picks on her, and feels some sympathy for her, she (rightly) concludes that being a victim of abuse doesn't justify her bullying somebody who did nothing to her.
* FreudianSlip: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-io0dqXBD4 "My Mom Is Too pretty!"]] has Cynthia's boyfriend Ryan accidentally call her mother "sexy" rather than "Sally" when greeting her.
* FunWithAcronyms: Bamba and Matt from "I Wouldn't Have Known This if i didn't lose my v card" start a pseudo-cult called "Summon the Darkness" to explain why they're showing up to school in weird latex costumes. And yes, the fact that it stands for "STD" is completely intentional in-universe.
* GayBravado: One of Austin's friends in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuZxoZtuFIQ "someone stole my diary and showed it to the whole school"]] jokingly asks him for a kiss.
* GenderRarityValue: While he only spends a relatively brief time being worshiped, Jarrod from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7QGXPCo_WA "I Am The Only Man In Town"]] becomes extremely popular once it becomes known that he's a boy, ''especially'' after it's proven that he can sire male children.
* GentleTouchVsFirmHand: Tabitha and Jonathan take this approach to raising their daughter Lily in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnnPmiYxA_I "I Distracted Mom While Driving And The Worst Thing Happened"]], with Tabitha being the firm hand and Jonathan being the gentle touch.
* GetOut: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S68tXYSTwI "I Bought A Phone Without My Parents Knowing"]] has Fatima's mother saying this to her husband after finding his phone and discovering that he was cheating on her with strange women, all after her daughters [[CassandraTruth tried to explain the truth to her]]. Fatima's father then leaves, but not before saying that he said that his wife was always useless and that he [[OnlyInItForTheMoney only needed her money]].
* GirlsWithMoustaches: "I Wear A Mask To School To Hide What My Father Did To Me" is about a teenage girl who has facial hair due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
* GladIThoughtOfIt: Apple's boss in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhVxwbyoeNs "i stole my boss phone now i am his boss"]] earns her ire by dismissing her idea for a diaper delivery service, only to later pitch it to the company's CEO claiming it's his own idea.
* AGodIAmNot: Prisha from "people $$$ to see my face | my strange job" is treated like a goddess by the people of her village... and hates it, in large part due to the heavy duties and lack of freedom it means for her. She tries to tell one of her worshippers that she's not a goddess in private, but he insists she is.
* GoldDigger: Subverted with Lilly from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDofa3Uny5k "My Son Is Being Controlled By A Gold Digger"]]. Sophie initially thinks she's only dating Noah for the material benefits, but it turns out she actually cares for him as a person.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Sarah from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Yd4TTnoGaM "I Brain Washed Mom To Be My Slave"]] hypnotizes her mother into prioritizing her more and being more affectionate towards her. This turns her into an [[MyBelovedSmother overly-attached mom]] who refuses to leave the house or let her leave either.
* HairColorDissonance: The girl in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFRpIY21SSE "I Am Too Pretty"]] has been the victim of DumbBlonde jokes, but her hair is so dark that she looks like a brunette.
* HandsomeLech: "Brian/Mark" (his real name is never established) from "it was all a lie". While he's certainly good-looking and can be charming when it suits him, he turns out to be a complete scumbag in the bedroom (focusing solely on his own pleasure, doing things that hurt his bedmates, etc.), much to narrator Sarah's displeasure.
* HateSink: In a majority of the stories, there are characters who are bullies and obnoxious brats who try to make the narrators’ lives miserable.
* HealthcareMotivation:
** Mr. Davis from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqDg3v2Wc9s "we hid in my crush closet when they entered"]] only steals in order to pay for his daughter's cancer treatment.
** The kidnapper from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfV7q6BjDN8 "i saw my kidnapper]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgBbeOYvH3o after 10 Years!"]] reveals he only kidnapped the protagonist and held her for ransom in a desperate attempt to raise money for his ailing mother. But later on, he does this again despite his mom having passed away.
* HeliumSpeech: Apple from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhVxwbyoeNs "i stole my boss phone now i am his boss"]] tricks her boss into inhaling helium right before he has an important meeting, causing him to have this. This later turns out to only be the start of his HumiliationConga.
* HeroicBastard: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmrPmDuB1N8 "The Doctors Forced Me To Save Only One Of My Twin Sisters"]], Amelia's illegitimate half-sister chooses to donate part of her liver so both twins can be saved.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: When the narrator's father from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jE7ndHVGuSI "The Police Accused Me Of Murder 16 Years Ago I Was 2"]] takes a saliva sample from his daughter to do a DaddyDNATest, he inadvertently reveals that he was the culprit in a murder that had gone unsolved for sixteen years.
* HomeNudist: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q490wmCPsw "I'm A Gold Digger, I Married A Tree For Its Money"]], one of Chichi's complaints about being followed around by the Fraud Assesment is not being able to walk around her own house naked.
* HostileWeather: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzOXeaD7I54 "the window broke and than i saw blood"]] is about a girl whose area gets hit by a severe storm.
* HumbleGoal: What does Chichi from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1FiEIG_yuA "I'm A Gold Digger,]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q490wmCPsw I Married A Tree For Its Money"]] want to do when she gets lots of money from her grandma? Open a bakery.
* {{Hypocrite}}: This example comes from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S68tXYSTwI "I Bought A Phone Without My Parents Knowing"]]. Fatima's father told her and her sister Sasha to never make Facebook accounts because, as their mother claims, he "knows best". However, after saving enough money to get a phone, Fatima finds out that he has an account, one which has him with pictures of him cheating on his own wife.
* ICantBelieveAGuyLikeYouWouldNoticeMe: Emily from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb2RhLK39oM "I Found Who Swapped Me At Birth"]] is pleasantly surprised when the popular Brad returns her affections.
* IfICantHaveYou: A family example in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_ZE3upfn3I "I Was Brought to this world With 3 Moms or 2??"]]. Charlene admits she'd threatened to hurt her daughter Heather because she'd decided that if she couldn't have her, no one else could.
* IncompatibleOrientation: Sarah from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3x-MEHNCC2w "I Faked Losing My Memory"]] has a massive crush on her childhood friend Jake. Unfortunately for her, Jake turns out to be gay.
* InterclassFriendship: Scarlet from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rjfpdzp4QYc "I Hid For Days To See What Everyone Do"]] comes from a family that pretty much lives paycheck-to-paycheck, but her best friend Tess is a millionaire's daughter.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A936V7M1E28 "My Dad Follow Me Everywhere"]], the narrator's father acts way too overprotective towards her daugter and not letting her do anything. When he gives his blessing to date a boy she likes, and lets her live her life, it's revealed he hired that boy to date her and has been tracking her location for the past seven years. He even pulls a gun on her when she tried to escape, all so he can "protect" her.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Skyler from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQGsm3_sdn4 "my sister gave birth without telling anyone"]] is a {{delinquent|s}}, but he correctly points out that trying to get his baby with Cassie back would be unfair to his cousin who had made a deal with them to adopt the baby.
* JerkassToOne: An example comes from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlNtoP8812g "I Was Shocked When I Found Out Why My Teacher is after Me"]]. Ms. Smith is nice to most people, but a complete SadistTeacher to the narrator, Helen. This turns out to be [[FreudianExcuse because she gets picked on by her husband's mother, who is also named Helen]].
* KarmicJackpot: Cathy from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNjp0q_wlK8 "I Found A Treasure In My Second Hand jacket"]] finds a valuable baseball card in the pocket of a secondhand jacket she bought. Since she's poor and really wants to go to college, she's tempted to sell the card and get enough money to go to a good university, but she decides to find its rightful owner and return it. When the rightful owner comes to claim it, she's impressed enough by Cathy's honesty that she offers to pay for her education, an offer Cathy happily accepts.
* TheKindnapper: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VboZg6a1XFo "They Appeared On My Door After Googling Myself"]], the main character's parents turn out to have kidnapped her from her biological mother. But it's revealed that they did it because they knew her mother tried to have her husband killed and were afraid to leave her with an attempted murderer, and they were also fulfilling a promise to her birth father to keep her safe.
* LaserGuidedKarma: After her blackmail scheme is exposed, Mrs. Hooper from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgOoUjeknEk "i started an illegal business at school. my teacher joined!"]] gets fired. Later on, she tries to attack Hayley out of revenge, but is caught in the act and arrested.
* LightningGlare: Tabitha and her daughter Lily from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnnPmiYxA_I "I Distracted Mom While Driving And The Worst Thing Happened"]] exchange a few of these during their disputes.
* LoopholeAbuse: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1FiEIG_yuA "I'm A Gold Digger, I Married A Tree For Its Money"]], Chichi's grandmother says she won't get any of her riches unless she gets married by the end of the week. But she never specified that her granddaughter's spouse had to be ''human'', so Chichi gets a legally valid marriage to a potted lemon tree, and she has to pay up.
* LovableAlphaBitch: Loren from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqDg3v2Wc9s "we hid in my crush closet when they entered"]] seems like your typical "mean girl cheerleader" at first, but turns out to have a very kind and caring side that she starts expressing more.
* MakeItLookLikeAnAccident: Chichi from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q490wmCPsw "I'm A Gold Digger, I Married A Tree For Its Money"]] arranges for her husband to get run over by a truck. Of course, since her husband's a potted tree, it's not as bad as it sounds.
* MamaBear: In "We Got Married But We Never Met", Mia goes considerable lengths to save her son after he gets kidnapped.
* {{Manchild}} Apple's boss in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhVxwbyoeNs "i stole my boss phone now i am his boss"]] turns out to be this in his private life. While being a fan of ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'' isn't necessarily a sign of immaturity, living with his mother and having to follow her rules definitely puts him in this territory.
* ManipulativeBastard: Marcus from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WL4sXKlE-s "I Became Rich From Being A Psychopath"]] has a natural talent for making people dance to his tune, and he becomes even better after reading some psychology.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdZpQQPxfRY "I am a bodybuilder and my boyfriend is a tiny little guy"]] is about a female bodybuilder named Jacquelyn dating an effeminate nerd named George.
* MaskOfSanity: James from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LG0MOxI4mzc "Me or My Bf"]] was able to act normal enough to get a job as a safari guide, but he was actually dangerously obsessed enough to be sent to a mental hospital.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: The narrator of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPRK8e030UU "I died for 10 Minutes You won't believe what I saw....."]] sees visions of her friend Chris while under anesthesia after a car accident. Later on, it's revealed that Chris was undergoing a kidney transplant at the same time. She believes she and Chris "met on the other side", but the fact that Chris doesn't remember seeing her and she was thinking of him just before the accident suggests that this may have just been her seeing things.
* MindScrew: In "i had no idea they could do that", just about everything presented is... ambiguous and inconsistent, to put it mildly.
* MissConception: Felicia from "I Got Preg-nant From Swimming with My Friends" is a sheltered girl with some prudish parents, and as such has only a vague idea of how babies are made. When she doesn't have her period after she makes out with Miles at a pool party, she thinks he got her pregnant... even though the most they did was French kiss.
* MistakenForDying: Sarah from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akGzR8VoEaQ "I Heard My Parents Saying I'm Not Going To Live Long"]] overhears her parents talking about being afraid of losing her one night. This, combined with the fact that she's been struggling with an illness for some time, causes her to think she's terminally ill. But the next morning, it turns out Sarah was adopted, and her parents were worried about her biological mother wanting her back.
* MistakenForGay:
** Monica from "I found out why my mother keeps losing her underwear" assumes her friend John is gay. But it's later revealed that he just LikesOlderWomen.
** In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiJzPd5TupM I Was Jealous of the Perfect Girl, But Ended Up BFFs]], Lola thinks Paige is trying to ask her out when she approaches her and turns her down. Paige then corrects her and tells her she's not into girls either.
* MistakenForPregnant: In "I Got Preg-nant From Swimming with My Friends", Felicia thinks she got knocked up by Miles. But it turns out that her symptoms were actually caused by an ovarian cyst.
* MommasBoy: Apple's boss in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhVxwbyoeNs "i stole my boss phone now i am his boss"]] is shown to still live with his mother and follow her rules.
* MuggingTheMonster: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB11aMif2E8 "A Gold Digger became My Hero"]], a burglar breaks into Ava's house. When she wakes up, he discovers to his dismay that she's a skilled martial artist.
* {{Mukokuseki}}: One now-deleted video called "My biological parents traded me for two pigs" takes place in China and has an all-Chinese cast, but everyone is depicted in this style.
* MunchausenSyndrome: "Mom Made Me Have the worst diseases To Become Rich" is about an example of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Laurie's mother deliberately causes her to have some very serious health problems for money and attention.
* MySecretPregnancy:
** In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKZjtGbARBg "my sister gave birth without telling anyone"]], Cassie manages to hide her pregnancy from her family until her sister Lola catches her giving birth in the bathroom.
** The narrator of "I Stole A Lipstick, I Ended Up Being Pregnant!" manages to hide her pregnancy from her parents by doing charity work in a foreign country and giving her baby up for adoption after giving birth there.
* {{Narcissist}}: Helen's father in "I Work In Cleaning Bathrooms While My Dad Is A Millionaire" is diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder by a psychiatrist. Considering he kept his wife and daughter in poverty while not telling them he was a successful businessman for no reason other than wanting to indulge in his money fixation to the fullest, this is hardly surprising.
* NeverMyFault: Mrs. Hooper from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgOoUjeknEk "i started an illegal business at school. my teacher joined!"]] blamed Hayley for getting her fired... conveniently ignoring the fact that she wouldn't have been fired if she hadn't started a blackmail scheme to get extra money.
* NeverTrustATitle:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnnPmiYxA_I "I Distracted Mom While Driving And The Worst Thing Happened"]] is misleading in two ways. The first is that it's actually from the mother's perspective, not the daughter's. The second is that it implies her getting distracted while driving was a direct cause of something horrible, but the car crash wasn't caused by any error on her part, but by another driver running a red light.
** The title of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-lDegynXZo "I Realised I Wasn’t Trans After Transitioning"]] is not accurate. Olive thought they were a trans girl as a child, transitioned, and then realized they were genderfluid instead. They're still considered trans, but not binary trans.
** "I Am In Complex Relationship, We Are 4" may sound like it's a story about {{polyamory}}, when in fact, it's about both halves of a couple playing OperationJealousy with {{Invented Individual}}s.
** Despite what the title says, Jarrod from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7QGXPCo_WA "I Am The Only Man In Town"]] isn't ''actually'' the only man in his town. He's just the first boy to be born in his village in twenty years. There are plenty of males who are older than him.
* NoEnding: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VXTW5RYOe0 "I Hid under A Billionaire Bed"]] ends on the words "I smiled" right when it seems like there's going to be more to the story.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Aria from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mmnktWN7IQ "A strange man claims he is my husband - He Knows Everything"]] tries to help comfort a young girl... and as a result ends up horrifically disfigured in a train accident (that's implied to also render her comatose for some time), mistaken for somebody else, has her face changed due to both of the above, and kept in a GildedCage by a man who thinks she's his bitchy adulterous wife.
* NonIdleRich: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1FiEIG_yuA "I'm A Gold Digger,]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q490wmCPsw I Married A Tree For Its Money"]], Chichi wants to open a bakery after she gets millions from her grandma.
* ObfuscatingDisability: The narrator of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_0UbLa_78A "I know everyone's dirty secrets by pretending I'm blind!"]] pretends to be blind so people won't know she's the girl whose father was the subject of a viral video about him having an affair with his then-boss's wife.
* ObfuscatingInsanity: Chichi from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1FiEIG_yuA "I'm A Gold Digger,]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q490wmCPsw I Married A Tree For Its Money"]] pretends to have genuinely fallen in love with a potted lemon tree. In reality, she only married it [[ItMakesSenseInContext so her grandmother would give her a large sum of money]].
* OldManMarryingAChild: Subverted in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OK5tSjyhXPk "I Was Stuck In An Elevator for 7 days"]]. The teenage protagonist ends up trapped in an elevator with an old man who tries to force her to marry him through {{blackmail}}... but he turns out to have been recruited by her parents as part of an elaborate scheme to "teach her a lesson".
* OlderThanTheyLook: Selina from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm6COt3Ce34 "a single word changed my life forever"]] is in her twenties, but can pass for a high school student.
* TheOneGuy: Too [[ExaggeratedTrope Exaggerated]] for its own good. In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7QGXPCo_WA "I Am The Only Man In Town"]], Jarrod is, well, [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin the only man in town]]. The channel was too focused on making a crazy story they forgot to make it make sense. If there have only been girls born for 20 years, how would the town reproduce? Not to mention it's misleading, because the mayor is a boy, and Jarrod has a dad.
* OneOfTheKids: Amara from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGcW7r8ae_s "After 30 Years I Am Still 16"]] is in her mid-40s, but still has the mentality of a teenager due to spending decades in a coma. After some initial adjustment to the changes she missed, she finds that she generally gets along better with teenagers than people of her biological age bracket.
* OnlyFriend: Sue from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_qa7yPvrX0 "I became The school Joke, i had to revenge"]] considers Trish her sole friend.
* OnlySixFaces: There are some videos where character design is... rather limited. It becomes a problem in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mmnktWN7IQ "A strange man claims he is my husband - He Knows Everything"]] -- Aria claims the reconstructive surgery she got after being disfigured in a train accident made her look nothing like herself (which, as it turns out, is due to being mistaken for somebody else)... but the animation makes her look hardly any different.
* OperationJealousy: Jerry from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlyX5qj4oY0 "He Regrets cheating on me"]] is afraid his fiancee/wife Cassie is only marrying him out of obligation and flirts with other women to make her jealous. Little does he know that she really does love him, and his flirting makes her really upset.
* OppositesAttract: Leanne from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJdpn2BVnOg "I loved my BF until I met his sister"]] is an exuberant, spontaneous girl who falls in love with an introverted guy named Robby.
* OrganTheft: Subverted in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXeNWztGsAo "My Kidnappers Refused To Reveal What They Did To My Body"]]. The narrator initially fears she might've been victimized by an organ-trafficking ring, but it turns out she'd just been taken to a hospital after suffering a burst appendix.
* OrificeInvasion: The narrator of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ySwVhmwrJs "A Spider Has Been Living In My Ear For Years"]] comes to the conclusion that the spider found in her ear must have entered it while she was on a camping trip.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: Mr. Davis from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqDg3v2Wc9s "we hid in my crush closet when they entered"]] lost his son in a car accident and is terrified of losing his daughter to cancer.
* PirateEpisode: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh5dcr7GMZc I Spend 20 Hours In The Water Everyday For This Secret Reason]] stars Astrid, a pirate who gets stranded in a town and eventually saves that town from a flood.
* ProducePelting: [[AlphaBitch Jenny]], from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2hBcS6vVZ8 "I Was Born In The Forest, I've Never Seen People Before"]], starts throwing eggs and tomatoes at protesters, although we only see the eggs.
* RagsToRiches: Deconstructed in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aGuU3onLcQ "I Wish I Never Won 200 million dollars in the lottery"]]. When Ava wins the jackpot in the lottery, it brings out some pretty bad qualities in her relatives and causes her family to drift apart.
* RaisedAsTheOppositeGender: Jarrod from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7QGXPCo_WA "I Am The Only Man In Town"]] spends the first few years of his life being raised as a girl, due to his parents not wanting attention from having produced their town's only male child in twenty years.
* RealAfterAll: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlyX5qj4oY0 "He Regrets cheating on me"]], Cassie decides to teach her new husband Jerry a lesson about hitting on other women. So she hires some actors to set up a "haunted house" scenario on their honeymoon to scare him straight. When the newlyweds go back to the airport, Cassie calls their leader, a woman named Samantha, to congratulate them on the excellent job they did... only to discover that Samantha and her team couldn't get to their destination, and so couldn't do what they were hired to do.
* ReallyGetsAround: Belle from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wj0aRs7F-w "my sister is dating the entire town"]] is... not particularly restrained in her dating life. At one point, she starts talking on her phone to plan a date while currently out at the movies with somebody else, and it's later revealed that she slept with Kenneth ''very'' soon after meeting him in a park despite barely talking to him and deciding he wasn't her type.
* RedHerring: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WE91UlK9V1Y "The police found something worth millions in my bag, OMG!"]] initially makes it seem like some French tourists were the ones who stole an expensive vase from a museum. But it turns out the real culprit was a crooked security guard named Gary.
* RichBoredom: Kelsie from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlhlLtEIkKQ "i found my friend things in my dad's car, whaaaattt?"]] is a girl from a very well-off family who takes a summer job at a café simply because she wants something to occupy her time.

* RunForTheBorder: The now-deleted video "I Woke Up In A Moving Van Heading To Mexico" is about a girl whose father tries to flee to Mexico with her and her sister.
* SadistTeacher: Played with in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlNtoP8812g "I Was Shocked When I Found Out Why My Teacher is after Me"]]. While Helen's teacher Ms. Smith is nice to most people, [[JerkassToOne she's a complete bully to her]].
* SadisticChoice: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmrPmDuB1N8 "The Doctors Forced Me To Save Only One Of My Twin Sisters"]] is about a girl named Amelia whose younger twin sisters both get very sick due to a congenital liver defect they share. Amelia's a match, so she can be a donor... but since she can only donate a small part of her liver, she has to choose which twin she wants to give it to. Thankfully, her father turned out to have an illegitimate daughter with his high school sweetheart, who was also a match and agreed to donate part of her liver as well, so both twins were saved.
* SameSexTriplets: Tracy from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWQnun4HR14 "My 3 Brothers Believe I’m Their Mother"]] has three triplet younger brothers: Caleb, Christopher and Conrad.
* ScaryScorpions: Double subverted in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tnox9auQ8SM "I Eat Scorpions For Breakfast To Become Poisonous"]]. The narrator obtains some potentially dangerous Arizona bark scorpions, and while she's afraid of them at first, she gets used to eating them. But then she and her brother get stung...
* ScatterbrainedSenior: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aGuU3onLcQ "I Wish I Never Won 200 million dollars in the lottery"]], Ava gets a lottery ticket from an elderly woman, and promises her that she'll tell her if her ticket wins. When she wins the jackpot, she decides to keep the money herself since her family was in dire straits at the time and eventually forgets who really won. When she remembers, she tells her... only to realize she doesn't remember the encounter. Turns out, the old woman had Alzheimer's.
* ScreamingAtSquick: One nurse lets out a bloodcurdling scream when she sees a picture of a spider in the narrator's ear in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ySwVhmwrJs "A Spider Has Been Living In My Ear For Years"]].
* ScreamingBirth: Happens to Cassie, the narrator's sister in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKZjtGbARBg "my sister gave birth without telling anyone"]].
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: The narrator's birth mother in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VboZg6a1XFo "They Appeared On My Door After Googling Myself"]] has a lot of connections with law enforcement due to many members of her family being cops, and so she was perceived as untouchable by the law... [[SubvertedTrope but then she learns the hard way that she isn't]].
* TheScrooge: Due to having grown up dirt-poor, Emily from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8fvV32RiEI "I'm homeless but i have millions"]] is an obsessive miser despite having since become rich. While this causes problems with her love life, she's able to solve them by joining a Platform/{{Facebook}} group for cheap people looking for partners and finding a fellow miser named Tom. * SelfFulfillingProphecy: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMOMRwUIoPQ "All girls in my Family Died at 18"]], the narrator becomes so paranoid about an alleged family {{curse}} where female members of her family (on both sides, no less) die at age 18 that she refuses to leave her room and stops eating properly. Naturally, this eventually results in her being hospitalized.
* SelfMadeMan: Hunter from "i found her after 20 years" manages to get rich by founding his own company.
* SextraCredit: This is implied to be at least part of why Rosie from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlhlLtEIkKQ "i found my friend things in my dad's car, whaaaattt?"]] turns out to have been having an affair with her English Literature professor.
* ShamefulSourceOfKnowledge: In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_0UbLa_78A "I know everyone's dirty secrets by pretending I'm blind!"]], the protagonist sees her friend Elsie's boyfriend kissing another girl... but telling her would mean admitting she could see. She manages to get around this by sending Elsie a picture via Instagram (since her Instagram account doesn't use her real name and her profile pic is outdated)
* SheepInSheepsClothing: Sophie from [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDofa3Uny5k "My Son Is Being Controlled By A Gold Digger"]] thinks her son Noah's girlfriend Lilly is a GoldDigger only pretending to love him and just acting nice to her and her husband to keep her gravy train rolling… but it turns out she loves Noah for who she is, not his money.

* SpookyPainting: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhng7xwLTn0 "My Grandparents Brought Me A Deadly Gift"]] has the titular grandparents give the narrator's parents a painting of SantaClaus that's rather unsettling in a number of ways. The narrator comes to believe it's cursed, though [[MaybeMagicMaybeMundane it's not clear if it actually is]].

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

essay my story animated

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Aug. 24, 2024

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Opinion: When I talked about my pre-Roe abortion, other women’s stories poured out: ‘You are the only person I’ve ever told’

The summer of 1965, the first gynecologist I went to for a diaphragm turned me down. He was within his rights — birth control had only just become legal for married people, and contraception for unmarried people like me would remain against the law until 1972. With the support of a growing feminist movement, single women with financial resources and medical access managed to get the pill anyway and rode the wave of the summer of love, exulting in the sexual revolution. “Make Love Not War” demanded not only peace in Vietnam but liberation from restraints on sex and dread of unwanted pregnancy.

But a diaphragm could slip or have a hole in it. Condoms were considered ineffective and impaired our pleasure and freedom. Intrauterine devices were not in general use. You might skip a birth control pill one day or two days and find yourself pregnant, which is what happened to me. Or sleep with one’s boyfriend and be edged into unwanted sex with someone else and not know who impregnated you. That also happened to me.

BOULDER, CO - JANUARY 31, 2022: Dr Warren Hern talk on the phone in his clinic on January 31, 2022 in Boulder, Colorado. He has been performing abortions since the 1970's. He is known for doing late-term abortions because of fetal anomalies.(Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times)

Column: Warren Hern is one of the country’s few late-term abortion doctors. This is what drives him

Through half a century of death threats and derision, Warren Hern has never stopped providing women with critically needed healthcare.

Aug. 21, 2024

White and privileged enough to pay what I remember as $2,000, I maneuvered a “therapeutic abortion,” a loophole in the law that allowed abortion for the health of the woman. Typically, the strategy was mental health. I’m sure I told the psychiatrist I didn’t want to marry the father and that I could not care for a child. The obstetrician agreed to perform the procedure, asked me on the operating table if I wanted to go through with it, and told me not to tell anyone. I told only the friends who drove me to the hospital.

The story still amazes me. Who was that 23-year-old woman who managed to get a safe abortion all on her own? What was the impact of that decision on the rest of my life? I thought little about it until recently, when I realized my students and other younger women had no idea what it had been like back in the day. What to tell them? I remember being alone. I remember feeling scared. I had paid for the abortions of a couple of women I knew and driven a friend to an illegal one in New Jersey. She ended up in the hospital, bleeding badly. “I damn near died,” she told me, 55 years later.

Calmes: Why Trump’s ‘leave it to the states’ abortion stance ties him in knots

Trump’s hapless and contradictory flailing on abortion is a prime signal: This man shouldn’t get another term.

Sept. 5, 2024

I did not know, when I sought to terminate my pregnancy in New Haven, Conn., that a month before in New York City 12 women had gone public about their abortions at a “speak-out,” or that in Chicago an underground collective called the Janes was arranging safe abortions, free to those who could not afford them. Fear of pregnancy haunted everything beyond a kiss, as did stories of women sent away to have children they gave up for adoption, women who died from botched procedures, boyfriends who wouldn’t help pay, boyfriends who would.

The most radical position on abortion before Roe vs. Wade was repeal not reform — the argument being that any abortion law, no matter how liberal, denied women control of our own bodies. After Roe, abortion opponents took control of the discourse, muddling the clarity of the simple fact that one’s body is one’s own. In 1977, the Hyde Amendment, which denied federal funds for abortion, further reinforced the disparity between women who could afford the procedure and those who could not. Demands for parental consent denied young women autonomy. Amid clinic bombings, the pro-choice movement seemed unable to effectively call out the cruelty of antiabortion rhetoric that privileged the life of an unborn child over that of an unrealized woman or overburdened mother.

Column: Two years after the Supreme Court’s abortion decision, meet the expert on post-Roe America

UC Davis law professor and historian Mary Ziegler has become one of the country’s leading authorities on the abortion issue. She sees a push-pull between judges, anti-abortion lawmakers and Americans who by and large favor abortion rights.

June 23, 2024

Those of us who’d had abortions were made somehow inaudible. “Write a poem,” a friend said to me on our way to Washington for the 1992 March for Women’s Lives, an event prompted by a challenge to a Pennsylvania abortion rights law brought to the Supreme Court . Half a million rallied and Roe was preserved. I’d hardly talked about my abortion, let alone written about it, but I remembered my long-ago loneliness. The poem recounted the sex that led to my 1969 abortion and a visit to a post-Roe women-run clinic. I remember the power of the audience response when I read it aloud and my surprise when a young editor wrote me, saying that her magazine’s decision to publish it had been controversial.

With the Dobbs decision, public speech about abortion is no longer rare. What was silence has become an uproar. The new back alley is a flight you can’t afford to a state where abortion is legal, or a hospital room where you’re left to bleed out because your miscarriage is too late to be legally assisted by professionals.

On a recent women’s mobilization call for Kamala Harris supporters, two women told their stories — both were hospitalized for late-term miscarriages, both abandoned by doctors who feared criminal charges. “I nearly died,” one of the women said. “I was lucky,” said the other.

During the last two years, when I’ve told women I was writing about my pre-Roe abortion, stories poured out: Mine was in a dentist’s office; I had to go to Puerto Rico; mine was botched and I was so alone. That I’d prompted these revelations was surprise enough. More unnerving was that in almost every instance, the woman would lean forward: “You are the only person I’ve ever told,” she’d confide. “Only you will know,” a woman in her 50s whispered to me at a book signing last week.

Though friends who knew me in my 20s tell me I always seemed confident, it’s amazing to me that I was able to make such a decision on my own behalf before I even had a self. Now in my 70s, I realize that moment helped to form me, a woman who has made many decisions against the grain. I still seem confident to friends, but every time an important choice presents itself, I churn back to that long-ago lonely girl. How stunning now to join that mobilizing call where the importance of decisions like mine were acknowledged, where my life as a single working woman was not odd or unusual, where I was invited to shout as one of many.

The Lifesaving Cancer Treatment I Wish More People Knew About

cancer treatment

On August 5, 2022, I went to see a new doctor for a yearly check-up. Gregory Prokopowicz had just arrived from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. I was among his first patients. I was 75 and felt great. I’m a writer and a poker player. I’d just gotten back from Las Vegas where I’d come in second in a big tournament. My sixth novel, Bluff , was going to be made into a movie. Dr. Prokopowicz said I was in excellent health—except for a slight problem with my kidneys that showed up on a blood test. I had no symptoms. But just to be cautious he sent me for a routine renal ultrasound.

After the procedure the doctor came in and sat down, staring at me like a person who had seen a ghost. What he said next made me wonder if the ghost was me.

“Your kidneys are fine,” he said. “However, there’s a very large mass floating over your other organs. We have no idea what it is.”

“Moby Dick!” I blurted out to take the edge off my terror.

After more scans and an endoscopy at Hopkins, I was told I had pancreatic cancer. I had never even given a thought to my pancreas, a hand-sized organ behind the stomach that makes enzymes to break down food for digestion. But now I could think of nothing else. The tumor was large and had to be taken out immediately.

On September 23, 2022, Fabian Johnston, a brilliant surgeon, performed a nine-hour operation on me, removing the tumor I had nicknamed Moby Dick, plus my spleen and my gall bladder. Moby measured 16 centimeters (6.3 inches). Amazingly, no other organs were affected. The lymph nodes were clear.

After the operation I learned through DNA testing that I had one of the rarest tumors in the world: a pancreatoblastoma . It has been documented mainly in children , but in only about 30 adults . Very little is known about this tumor except that if it is removed with no metastases —that is, without spreading to other organs—it may not recur like other deadly pancreatic cancers . Because Dr. Johnston had found no evidence of any metastases in any lymph nodes or vital organs, he declared me cancer free.” I returned home feeling like I’d dodged not just a bullet but a cannon ball.

One month later I went back to Hopkins to discuss the results of a postoperative CT scan. My husband and I met Dr. Johnston with his team in his office. My GP, Dr. Prokopowicz, was on the phone listening in. Though Dr. Johnston greeted me warmly, I sensed a shift in his normally sunny disposition. He looked at me and said gently, “Jane, I’m sorry to tell you that your recent MRI shows that you have metastases on your liver.”

The full impact of this revelation did not hit me right away.

“What does that mean?”

“Unfortunately, it means you have metastatic pancreatic cancer. And without treatment, you have roughly eight months to live.” (Even though the cancer had now spread to my liver, it was still called pancreatic cancer because that’s where the malignant cells originated.)

If learning I had cancer was an earthquake, this aftershock was a tidal wave.

“What treatment could I have?” I stammered.

“Chemotherapy is recommended.”

So now my hopeful outlook on life had changed to a grim outlook on death.

I got home and googled “metastatic pancreatic cancer.” Dr. Google was even less optimistic than Dr. Johnston. According to the web, I had a three percent chance of living eight months after such a diagnosis, even with chemotherapy.

My next stop was a consultation with an oncologist. This doctor told me that there was only one treatment for metastatic pancreatic cancer: chemotherapy. I’d heard horror stories about those drugs. But I also had several friends who’d survived their cancers by having chemo. The thing was, despite the pain of recovering from a big operation, I still felt remarkably well.

I told him, “I really don’t want to have chemo. I don’t want to feel bad until I die. I want to feel good until I die.” If I seemed cavalier, it was because I still had not yet felt the full weight of death upon me.

I asked him how long it would be before I had symptoms because I wanted to go play in a big poker tournament in Las Vegas and then go to Amsterdam to see the Vermeer exhibit.

“I don’t think a couple of months will make much difference,” he said. “After your travels we’ll stick a port in you and start chemo if you change your mind.” It was a quick visit.

The Antioxidant Everyone Should Take After Age 40

When I got back home from my trips in February, I knew I wasn’t going to change my mind about chemo. I decided I was just going to live, live, live until I died. I’m relatively old. I had lived a fascinating, privileged life. I’m a Christian, though non-practicing. I was resigned to my fate and prayed with the thought: “Lord, Thy will be done.”

cancer treatment

Not that I stopped looking for salvation. I tried to get into a promising trial for pancreatic cancer patients but discovered I wasn’t eligible because my tumor was so rare. I talked to a couple of friends who had connections at other great cancer hospitals. One of them put me in touch with a famous oncologist in New York. We had a wonderful phone conversation. However, when I assured him I was not having chemo, I never heard from him again.

As the weeks passed, I told everyone who was interested (and many who were not) that I had metastatic pancreatic cancer and only a short time to live. For one thing I wanted people to understand that cancer is not a shameful or shadowy disease. And for another, quite selfishly, it helped to bolster my decision not to have chemotherapy while I still felt well. I even showed some hardy souls the pictures of Moby I had on my iPhone. Taken immediately after my operation, the photos showed Moby laid out on a blue surgical cloth, the size of a small football, an ovoid mound of veiny, bloody flesh, practically throbbing with evil. Literally everyone gasped in horror and disbelief at the sight of this alien thing. I found myself taking a perverse pride in him.

In January, I casually announced to Marie Brenner, one of my oldest friends in the world, that I had metastatic pancreatic cancer and not a lot of time to live. I wasn’t maudlin about it, but Marie was almost indignant at the news.

“You’re not going to die on my watch!” she said firmly.

“Honey, I love you. But, trust me, I’m a hopeless case.”

“I know a doctor who only takes hopeless cases,” she shot back.

She told me about Dr. Tomoaki Kato, a medical magician she got to know up at Columbia Presbyterian while she was researching her latest book, The Desperate Hours, a chronicle of the year-plus she had spent at the New York Presbyterian hospital system during the pandemic . Dr. Kato is best known for liver transplantation, but he has also performed other breakthrough operations, including separating conjoined twins . He led the first reported removal and re-implantation of six organs to excise a hard-to-reach abdominal tumor. He is so revered that when he contracted a life-threatening case of COVID, the story of his ordeal and recovery was on the front page of The New York Times .

That day, Marie sent all my scans, blood tests, pictures of the tumor, and medical history to Dr. Kato, hoping my rare case would interest him. He got back to her immediately, and said he was well acquainted with my rare pancreatoblastoma. He agreed to take my “hopeless” case.

On a drizzly April morning, my husband Jim, Marie, and I met Dr. Kato in his office at Columbia Presbyterian. Dr. Kato is a slim, fit man with a handsome face and calm dark eyes. He was in his surgical scrubs scheduled to operate that morning. Yet he spent over an hour with me; his voice was soft and thoughtful as explained my situation. According to the very sensitive blood tests I had every month taken from a finger prick, the level of Circulating Tumor (CT) in my body was relatively low. This meant I still had some time. However, if the CT level shot up, that would mean the cancer was spreading rapidly. He showed me a scan of my liver and pointed out the metastases on the two lobes. It was only a matter of time before these “mets” would take over my liver and kill me. We discussed my options—chemo, wait and see—and then he asked, “has anyone suggested Y-90?"

He explained. Y-90 is short for Yttrium-90 , a radioactive isotope which can be injected into the blood supply of the metastases in the liver and possibly kill them. It has been used successfully on other tumors, but never on the liver metastases of a tumor as rare as mine.

Marie and Jim and I left Dr. Kato’s office practically in tears. Was there a glimmer of hope after all?

Dr. Kato now placed me in the hands of the interventional radiology department and David Sperling.

Dr. Sperling and I first met through a video call where he explained the details of my treatment. Radioembolization requires at least two treatment sessions for each lobe affected with metastases. Because I had “mets” on two lobes, I would require four sessions in all. In the first session, a catheter is inserted into the liver artery through the groin. Through angiography the arteries fueling the metastases are “mapped.” In the second session, a catheter is inserted into the wrist. The radioactive isotope Y-90 in the form of tiny resin beads is injected into the “mapped” blood supplies of the tumor. Y-90 aims to kill them by cutting off their blood supply.

Map and zap.

On May 26, 2023, I met Dr. Sperling in person. I lay on a table in a large operating room at Columbia Presbyterian. Dr. Sperling is a meticulous man with the eyes of an eagle and a no-nonsense air. He worked quickly and confidently. The procedure took an hour and a half. I went out for dinner that night. Two weeks later I came back and he zapped the mets with Y-90 through a line in my left wrist. That procedure took about an hour. I was slightly nauseous afterward but otherwise had no side effects. After each Dr. Sperling and I looked at MRI pictures of my liver on a computer. He was encouraged by what he saw. Y-90 appeared to be working. The mets were dying.

Since my first mapping I have gotten to know Dr. Sperling. He is a star in his field of Interventional Radiology. He has a wonderful sense of humor. He loves dogs as much as I do. He loves Fantasy Football the way I love poker. He is also a champion gamer. I could see how much he enjoyed zapping those mets. After my treatments were over, the key question was whether Yttrium-90 would work on a rare pancreatoblastoma . I went to Vegas to play in the World Series of Poker. Poker was the one thing that got my mind off my “eight months to live” diagnosis. Since I figured I wasn’t going to live to finish my eighth novel, I might as well have fun. When I returned from Vegas, I went up to Columbia Presbyterian for another MRI. Once again, with me at his side, Dr. Sperling examined the results of the scan. The treatment had worked!

Two months later, the Circulating Tumor in my blood went down to zero—meaning I was for the moment cancer free. It was a true miracle. But because we are dealing with the Emperor of All Maladies, as cancer has been aptly named, follow up scans were necessary. A subsequent MRI revealed I had another metastasis on my liver. Dr. Sperling treated me again. Map and Zap. Then pray.

I have now survived almost two years beyond anyone’s expectations. With few side effects, no down time, and a remarkable record of success with other tumors less rare than my own, it is a wonder to me that Y-90 is not considered by more oncologists as an alternative or an adjunct to chemo. Interventional radiology using Y-90 treated my liver metastases from the inside out. Chemotherapy would have treated them infusing the body with harsh chemicals which would hopefully kill them but also kill a lot else in the bargain. Yet chemo remains the first choice of oncologists in cases of metastatic disease. Y-90 may then be used as a last resort if the chemo has failed to eradicate the liver mets. My treatment was only good for the liver. In general, systemic chemo is the first, second, or third option and it is unclear why Y-90 is not offered more frequently as an alternative. Perhaps because chemo has become the standard first option, I was never offered Y-90 as an alternative. Of course, every case is different; consultation with an experienced medical professional about Y-90 is mandatory if you're considering asking for it as part of a treatment plan—it's not a fit for everyone. But I do believe that Y-90 could save at least some patients the agony of chemo and extend their lives.

Cancer can paralyze you with fear—both the fear there is no hope and the fear of talking about it. My advice is to broadcast your disease. Tell anyone who will listen what kind of cancer you have. Do research. Knock on every medical door. Don’t take “only this way” for an answer.

My case is nothing short of miraculous. At this writing, I have lived almost two years beyond the eight months I was given. In June I went out to Las Vegas and played in the World Series of Poker. I had no luck with the cards. But the real luck was being there at all. Just being alive is lucky!

The small met on my liver was zapped again. The CT has remained low and stable. I may even live to see the movie based on Bluff which is in the works. The point is to keep kicking the can down the road.

I used to get up every morning wondering how and when I would die. Now I have PTSD thinking I might be around for a while. I can live with that.

Essay on Favorite Movie

Students are often asked to write an essay on Favorite Movie in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Favorite Movie

Introduction.

My favorite movie is “Toy Story”. It is an animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios.

The story revolves around a group of toys that come to life when humans are not around. Their leader is a cowboy doll named Woody.

Other notable characters include Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger action figure, and Bo Peep, a porcelain shepherdess doll.

Why I Love It

What makes “Toy Story” my favorite is its unique plot, colorful animation, and the valuable lessons it imparts about friendship and loyalty.

250 Words Essay on Favorite Movie

Plot and characters.

“Inception” revolves around a character named Dom Cobb, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Cobb is a thief who infiltrates people’s dreams to steal their secrets. The plot thickens when he’s given a task not to extract, but to implant an idea into someone’s mind, a process known as ‘Inception.’ The ensemble cast, including Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, each bring unique depth to their characters.

Symbolism and Themes

The movie delves into themes of reality, perception, and subconscious mind, challenging traditional narrative structures. The spinning top, a recurring symbol in the film, represents Cobb’s struggle to distinguish reality from dreams, adding a layer of complexity and intrigue.

Impact and Conclusion

“Inception” is not merely a movie, but an intellectual journey. It provokes thoughts about our perception of reality and the power of our subconscious mind. The movie’s ending, which leaves the audience questioning whether Cobb is in a dream or reality, amplifies its thought-provoking nature. This ambiguity and the film’s intricate exploration of complex themes make “Inception” my favorite movie. It serves as a testament to the power of cinema to not only entertain but also to stimulate intellectual and philosophical discourse.

500 Words Essay on Favorite Movie

Introduction: the power of cinema.

Movies have a profound impact on our lives, shaping our perceptions, emotions, and understanding of the world. Among the multitude of films I have encountered, one stands out as my favorite: Christopher Nolan’s “Inception.”

Exploring Complex Themes

What sets “Inception” apart from other movies is its exploration of complex themes. The movie delves into the intricacies of the human mind, dreams, and the nature of reality itself. It presents a world where technology allows individuals to infiltrate dreams and manipulate them. This premise raises intriguing questions about the boundaries between reality and illusion, and the moral implications of tampering with human consciousness.

Masterful Storytelling

Character development.

“Inception” also excels in its character development. Each character is well-rounded, with their motivations, strengths, and weaknesses clearly depicted. The protagonist, Dom Cobb, is particularly compelling. His struggle to distinguish reality from dreams, coupled with his desire to reunite with his children, adds a poignant emotional depth to the movie.

Visual Effects and Cinematography

The movie’s visual effects and cinematography are groundbreaking. The dream sequences are visually stunning, with gravity-defying scenes and landscapes that bend and fold in impossible ways. These surreal visuals not only serve to captivate the audience but also reinforce the film’s exploration of the fluidity of reality within dreams.

Soundtrack and Score

Conclusion: the impact of “inception”.

“Inception” is a testament to the power of cinema to challenge, engage, and move audiences. It pushes the boundaries of conventional storytelling, explores profound themes, and offers a feast for the senses with its stunning visuals and score. It is not merely a film to be watched, but an experience to be savored, analyzed, and remembered. This is why “Inception” holds the coveted position of being my favorite movie.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Happy studying!

Your thoughts on my animated story video? [Review Video]

Hi. I'd really appreciate your review of my channel's second video!

Sketch My Story is a channel animating the real stories told by a new guest each week. The stories will be funny, adventurous, or interesting. I’m targeting people in their mid-20’s to 30’s in careers and/or relationships and enjoy taking a break hearing a short, relatable story.

I took down the original version of this video and made improvements to bgm/sfx and thumbnail.

How do I trust her after this? 😅 Feat. Storyteller Johnny Beehne r https://youtu.be/beBDHnzmG40

self review:

While there are plenty of "stick-figure" animation styles on YouTube, I think my style is unique enough to be a brand of my own and differentiate itself from the others.

I’m working within the limitations of doing an “illustrative” whiteboard-style animation moderately well and keep the quality high, but it falls short of what can be done if it was a full traditional animation style. I add touches of traditional animation to keep things dynamic when the drawing is idle. I will try to continually improve here.

I think the thumbnail is okay and sets expectations for what the video will be like. The photo of the storyteller helps add relatability and validates these are stories from actual people. There might be some improvements here I’m not grasping.

The story is relatable and well-told and mildly interesting. I don’t believe it connects as well as it should because possibly it’s missing an element of why the audience should care.

The intro is good and hopefully not too misleading that this is some sort of "shaming" video.

The voice energy/emotion of the guest could be higher but it is true to his personality and style of humor. The quality of the audio is good.

Questions :

Do you have a different option on any of the self-review points? I’d like to hear them!

Do you find the illustration/animation style engaging enough?

What's your demographic and did you like the video enough to feel like you wanted to see more stories?

Thumbnail thoughts?

What would you recommend improving the most?

Thank you! – Mary 🙏💗 (and if you'd be interested in collabing with me to share a story you'd love animated, hit me up!)

Key things to know about U.S. election polling in 2024

Conceptual image of an oversized voting ballot box in a large crowd of people with shallow depth of field

Confidence in U.S. public opinion polling was shaken by errors in 2016 and 2020. In both years’ general elections, many polls underestimated the strength of Republican candidates, including Donald Trump. These errors laid bare some real limitations of polling.

In the midterms that followed those elections, polling performed better . But many Americans remain skeptical that it can paint an accurate portrait of the public’s political preferences.

Restoring people’s confidence in polling is an important goal, because robust and independent public polling has a critical role to play in a democratic society. It gathers and publishes information about the well-being of the public and about citizens’ views on major issues. And it provides an important counterweight to people in power, or those seeking power, when they make claims about “what the people want.”

The challenges facing polling are undeniable. In addition to the longstanding issues of rising nonresponse and cost, summer 2024 brought extraordinary events that transformed the presidential race . The good news is that people with deep knowledge of polling are working hard to fix the problems exposed in 2016 and 2020, experimenting with more data sources and interview approaches than ever before. Still, polls are more useful to the public if people have realistic expectations about what surveys can do well – and what they cannot.

With that in mind, here are some key points to know about polling heading into this year’s presidential election.

Probability sampling (or “random sampling”). This refers to a polling method in which survey participants are recruited using random sampling from a database or list that includes nearly everyone in the population. The pollster selects the sample. The survey is not open for anyone who wants to sign up.

Online opt-in polling (or “nonprobability sampling”). These polls are recruited using a variety of methods that are sometimes referred to as “convenience sampling.” Respondents come from a variety of online sources such as ads on social media or search engines, websites offering rewards in exchange for survey participation, or self-enrollment. Unlike surveys with probability samples, people can volunteer to participate in opt-in surveys.

Nonresponse and nonresponse bias. Nonresponse is when someone sampled for a survey does not participate. Nonresponse bias occurs when the pattern of nonresponse leads to error in a poll estimate. For example, college graduates are more likely than those without a degree to participate in surveys, leading to the potential that the share of college graduates in the resulting sample will be too high.

Mode of interview. This refers to the format in which respondents are presented with and respond to survey questions. The most common modes are online, live telephone, text message and paper. Some polls use more than one mode.

Weighting. This is a statistical procedure pollsters perform to make their survey align with the broader population on key characteristics like age, race, etc. For example, if a survey has too many college graduates compared with their share in the population, people without a college degree are “weighted up” to match the proper share.

How are election polls being conducted?

Pollsters are making changes in response to the problems in previous elections. As a result, polling is different today than in 2016. Most U.S. polling organizations that conducted and publicly released national surveys in both 2016 and 2022 (61%) used methods in 2022 that differed from what they used in 2016 . And change has continued since 2022.

A sand chart showing that, as the number of public pollsters in the U.S. has grown, survey methods have become more diverse.

One change is that the number of active polling organizations has grown significantly, indicating that there are fewer barriers to entry into the polling field. The number of organizations that conduct national election polls more than doubled between 2000 and 2022.

This growth has been driven largely by pollsters using inexpensive opt-in sampling methods. But previous Pew Research Center analyses have demonstrated how surveys that use nonprobability sampling may have errors twice as large , on average, as those that use probability sampling.

The second change is that many of the more prominent polling organizations that use probability sampling – including Pew Research Center – have shifted from conducting polls primarily by telephone to using online methods, or some combination of online, mail and telephone. The result is that polling methodologies are far more diverse now than in the past.

(For more about how public opinion polling works, including a chapter on election polls, read our short online course on public opinion polling basics .)

All good polling relies on statistical adjustment called “weighting,” which makes sure that the survey sample aligns with the broader population on key characteristics. Historically, public opinion researchers have adjusted their data using a core set of demographic variables to correct imbalances between the survey sample and the population.

But there is a growing realization among survey researchers that weighting a poll on just a few variables like age, race and gender is insufficient for getting accurate results. Some groups of people – such as older adults and college graduates – are more likely to take surveys, which can lead to errors that are too sizable for a simple three- or four-variable adjustment to work well. Adjusting on more variables produces more accurate results, according to Center studies in 2016 and 2018 .

A number of pollsters have taken this lesson to heart. For example, recent high-quality polls by Gallup and The New York Times/Siena College adjusted on eight and 12 variables, respectively. Our own polls typically adjust on 12 variables . In a perfect world, it wouldn’t be necessary to have that much intervention by the pollster. But the real world of survey research is not perfect.

essay my story animated

Predicting who will vote is critical – and difficult. Preelection polls face one crucial challenge that routine opinion polls do not: determining who of the people surveyed will actually cast a ballot.

Roughly a third of eligible Americans do not vote in presidential elections , despite the enormous attention paid to these contests. Determining who will abstain is difficult because people can’t perfectly predict their future behavior – and because many people feel social pressure to say they’ll vote even if it’s unlikely.

No one knows the profile of voters ahead of Election Day. We can’t know for sure whether young people will turn out in greater numbers than usual, or whether key racial or ethnic groups will do so. This means pollsters are left to make educated guesses about turnout, often using a mix of historical data and current measures of voting enthusiasm. This is very different from routine opinion polls, which mostly do not ask about people’s future intentions.

When major news breaks, a poll’s timing can matter. Public opinion on most issues is remarkably stable, so you don’t necessarily need a recent poll about an issue to get a sense of what people think about it. But dramatic events can and do change public opinion , especially when people are first learning about a new topic. For example, polls this summer saw notable changes in voter attitudes following Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race. Polls taken immediately after a major event may pick up a shift in public opinion, but those shifts are sometimes short-lived. Polls fielded weeks or months later are what allow us to see whether an event has had a long-term impact on the public’s psyche.

How accurate are polls?

The answer to this question depends on what you want polls to do. Polls are used for all kinds of purposes in addition to showing who’s ahead and who’s behind in a campaign. Fair or not, however, the accuracy of election polling is usually judged by how closely the polls matched the outcome of the election.

A diverging bar chart showing polling errors in U.S. presidential elections.

By this standard, polling in 2016 and 2020 performed poorly. In both years, state polling was characterized by serious errors. National polling did reasonably well in 2016 but faltered in 2020.

In 2020, a post-election review of polling by the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) found that “the 2020 polls featured polling error of an unusual magnitude: It was the highest in 40 years for the national popular vote and the highest in at least 20 years for state-level estimates of the vote in presidential, senatorial, and gubernatorial contests.”

How big were the errors? Polls conducted in the last two weeks before the election suggested that Biden’s margin over Trump was nearly twice as large as it ended up being in the final national vote tally.

Errors of this size make it difficult to be confident about who is leading if the election is closely contested, as many U.S. elections are .

Pollsters are rightly working to improve the accuracy of their polls. But even an error of 4 or 5 percentage points isn’t too concerning if the purpose of the poll is to describe whether the public has favorable or unfavorable opinions about candidates , or to show which issues matter to which voters. And on questions that gauge where people stand on issues, we usually want to know broadly where the public stands. We don’t necessarily need to know the precise share of Americans who say, for example, that climate change is mostly caused by human activity. Even judged by its performance in recent elections, polling can still provide a faithful picture of public sentiment on the important issues of the day.

The 2022 midterms saw generally accurate polling, despite a wave of partisan polls predicting a broad Republican victory. In fact, FiveThirtyEight found that “polls were more accurate in 2022 than in any cycle since at least 1998, with almost no bias toward either party.” Moreover, a handful of contrarian polls that predicted a 2022 “red wave” largely washed out when the votes were tallied. In sum, if we focus on polling in the most recent national election, there’s plenty of reason to be encouraged.

Compared with other elections in the past 20 years, polls have been less accurate when Donald Trump is on the ballot. Preelection surveys suffered from large errors – especially at the state level – in 2016 and 2020, when Trump was standing for election. But they performed reasonably well in the 2018 and 2022 midterms, when he was not.

Pew Research Center illustration

During the 2016 campaign, observers speculated about the possibility that Trump supporters might be less willing to express their support to a pollster – a phenomenon sometimes described as the “shy Trump effect.” But a committee of polling experts evaluated five different tests of the “shy Trump” theory and turned up little to no evidence for each one . Later, Pew Research Center and, in a separate test, a researcher from Yale also found little to no evidence in support of the claim.

Instead, two other explanations are more likely. One is about the difficulty of estimating who will turn out to vote. Research has found that Trump is popular among people who tend to sit out midterms but turn out for him in presidential election years. Since pollsters often use past turnout to predict who will vote, it can be difficult to anticipate when irregular voters will actually show up.

The other explanation is that Republicans in the Trump era have become a little less likely than Democrats to participate in polls . Pollsters call this “partisan nonresponse bias.” Surprisingly, polls historically have not shown any particular pattern of favoring one side or the other. The errors that favored Democratic candidates in the past eight years may be a result of the growth of political polarization, along with declining trust among conservatives in news organizations and other institutions that conduct polls.

Whatever the cause, the fact that Trump is again the nominee of the Republican Party means that pollsters must be especially careful to make sure all segments of the population are properly represented in surveys.

The real margin of error is often about double the one reported. A typical election poll sample of about 1,000 people has a margin of sampling error that’s about plus or minus 3 percentage points. That number expresses the uncertainty that results from taking a sample of the population rather than interviewing everyone . Random samples are likely to differ a little from the population just by chance, in the same way that the quality of your hand in a card game varies from one deal to the next.

A table showing that sampling error is not the only kind of polling error.

The problem is that sampling error is not the only kind of error that affects a poll. Those other kinds of error, in fact, can be as large or larger than sampling error. Consequently, the reported margin of error can lead people to think that polls are more accurate than they really are.

There are three other, equally important sources of error in polling: noncoverage error , where not all the target population has a chance of being sampled; nonresponse error, where certain groups of people may be less likely to participate; and measurement error, where people may not properly understand the questions or misreport their opinions. Not only does the margin of error fail to account for those other sources of potential error, putting a number only on sampling error implies to the public that other kinds of error do not exist.

Several recent studies show that the average total error in a poll estimate may be closer to twice as large as that implied by a typical margin of sampling error. This hidden error underscores the fact that polls may not be precise enough to call the winner in a close election.

Other important things to remember

Transparency in how a poll was conducted is associated with better accuracy . The polling industry has several platforms and initiatives aimed at promoting transparency in survey methodology. These include AAPOR’s transparency initiative and the Roper Center archive . Polling organizations that participate in these organizations have less error, on average, than those that don’t participate, an analysis by FiveThirtyEight found .

Participation in these transparency efforts does not guarantee that a poll is rigorous, but it is undoubtedly a positive signal. Transparency in polling means disclosing essential information, including the poll’s sponsor, the data collection firm, where and how participants were selected, modes of interview, field dates, sample size, question wording, and weighting procedures.

There is evidence that when the public is told that a candidate is extremely likely to win, some people may be less likely to vote . Following the 2016 election, many people wondered whether the pervasive forecasts that seemed to all but guarantee a Hillary Clinton victory – two modelers put her chances at 99% – led some would-be voters to conclude that the race was effectively over and that their vote would not make a difference. There is scientific research to back up that claim: A team of researchers found experimental evidence that when people have high confidence that one candidate will win, they are less likely to vote. This helps explain why some polling analysts say elections should be covered using traditional polling estimates and margins of error rather than speculative win probabilities (also known as “probabilistic forecasts”).

National polls tell us what the entire public thinks about the presidential candidates, but the outcome of the election is determined state by state in the Electoral College . The 2000 and 2016 presidential elections demonstrated a difficult truth: The candidate with the largest share of support among all voters in the United States sometimes loses the election. In those two elections, the national popular vote winners (Al Gore and Hillary Clinton) lost the election in the Electoral College (to George W. Bush and Donald Trump). In recent years, analysts have shown that Republican candidates do somewhat better in the Electoral College than in the popular vote because every state gets three electoral votes regardless of population – and many less-populated states are rural and more Republican.

For some, this raises the question: What is the use of national polls if they don’t tell us who is likely to win the presidency? In fact, national polls try to gauge the opinions of all Americans, regardless of whether they live in a battleground state like Pennsylvania, a reliably red state like Idaho or a reliably blue state like Rhode Island. In short, national polls tell us what the entire citizenry is thinking. Polls that focus only on the competitive states run the risk of giving too little attention to the needs and views of the vast majority of Americans who live in uncompetitive states – about 80%.

Fortunately, this is not how most pollsters view the world . As the noted political scientist Sidney Verba explained, “Surveys produce just what democracy is supposed to produce – equal representation of all citizens.”
