In 1998, at age 24, he sold his company LinkExchange, an online banner advertising program, to Microsoft for $265 million. That vision statement, to deliver happiness to the world, has drawn new and repeat customers to the site.

| Written by

A stack of books in front of a book shelf.

No matter what startup path you’re walking, there’s a very good chance that someone has forged it, or at least something similar, and succeeded. So who better to learn from than those who’ve already climbed the mountain and conquered it?

Business biographies are fast becoming the go-to content for startup founders and small business owners who want to learn from the best. We’ve sourced the 10 best business biographies for entrepreneurs to read in 2024. Ready to be inspired?

Try Blinkist to gain key insights from the books below.

Best Business Biographies for Entrepreneurs

1. ‘alibaba: the house that jack ma built’ by duncan clark.

After Amazon, Jack Ma’s Alibaba is probably the most famous success story in ecommerce history. In the biography “Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built ” Duncan Clark tells Ma’s story of humble beginnings as an English teacher which culminated in his creation of a company that forever changed the global economy.

This biography will be particularly beneficial to startup founders in countries where government policy can often be a stumbling point to success. Ma’s home country of China was not always his ally in building Alibaba into a company that currently holds 80% market share, but this unlikely titan of business managed to outwit competitors from all over the world to achieve unimaginable success.

2. ‘Creativity, Inc.’ by Ed Catmull and Amy Wallace

Any startup founder in a creative space will find the biography of Ed Catmull, founder of animation giant, Pixar, riveting. “Creativity, Inc. ” is written by Catmull with the help of Amy Wallace and details how Catmull brought his college dream of creating the world’s first computer-animated movie to fruition with the release of the smash hit, Toy Story in 1995. Of course, this was simply the first of many successes for Catmull and Pixar, and his unlikely journey from startup to entertainment glory is a must-read for anyone on a similar path. Catmull also now heads up Disney Animation. Additionally, the book provides a few excellent leadership insights, especially where managing creatives is concerned.

3. ‘Shoe Dog’ by Phil Knight

Although this business biography is based around the journey of the creator of sports brand Nike, it holds insights and valuable lessons for all startups and businesses. “Shoe Dog” is written by Phil Knight, the founder of the world-famous brand, and as far as business biographies go, this one, which is also a New York Times bestseller, carves out a new space for the genre.

Knight walks readers through Nike’s journey from an intrepid startup to an iconic household name. If you’re a startup founder struggling with funding, you’ll definitely want to find out how Knight built Nike with an initial funding of $50 from his dad.

4. ‘Losing My Virginity’ by Richard Branson

Richard Branson’s biography “Losing My Virginity” charts his journey from a young entrepreneur with a dream to create businesses that would make a positive difference in the world, to becoming one of the most well-known and revered business leaders in the world. Branson’s businesses also cross numerous spaces and industries, which just goes to show that strong insights are translatable no matter the subject.

For startup founders, it can often feel that creating a successful business and having a well-balanced personal life are two completely irreconcilable goals, and this is perhaps one of the most important insights this business biography offers with Branson providing tips on how he learned to manage this aspect as he built Virgin.

5. ‘The Man Who Solved The Market’ by Gregory Zuckerman

Startup founders in the finance or fintech space will find Jim Simons’ story of creating an algorithm-driven approach to investing which would go on to achieve unheard-of market returns, invaluable. The business biography, “The Man Who Solved The Market,” written by Gregory Zuckerman, details Simons’ early years as a mathematician with a dream.

Simons would go on to found his company, Renaissance Technologies, and change the face of investments forever. Despite the very specific subject matter, the book also holds some valuable general insights into teamwork and collaboration for startup founders in any sector.

6. ‘How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big’ by Scott Adams

Now, Dilbert (yes, the comic book series), is, of course, not technically a company or business, but this list would be incomplete without this contribution from Scott Adams. Adams, the creator of the highly successful comic strip, penned “How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big” in which he explains how he managed to take some of his biggest failures and turn them into successes. The book also presents a very interesting management idea called the Dilbert Principle which purports that businesses will systematically shift poorly performing team members to management, as this is the area in which they can do the least damage. If you’re a startup founder building a team from the ground up, you’ll definitely want to consider whether the Dilbert Principle might apply to your team.

7. ‘Sam Walton: Made In America’ by Sam Walton

“ Sam Walton: Made In America” is a business biography that will undoubtedly inspire any startup founder in the retail space. In the book, Sam Walton, the founder of the retail giant, Walmart, shares his rags-to-riches tale of taking his dream from a single dime store to a massive international chain. Perhaps one of the most unique elements of the book is Walton’s insights on how to pair your own personal values with your business journey and keep a hold on your identity throughout. Walton also shares leadership insights around recognizing and fostering great thinkers within your team. Despite being set in the retail space, Walton’s insights are valuable for entrepreneurs in any industry, especially if they find themselves struggling to maintain their personal values while doing business.

8. ‘Believe It’ by Jamie Kern Lima

Female startup founders will be motivated and engaged by the business biography of Jamie Kern Lima, who went from serving tables for tips to owning a billion-dollar cosmetic startup. “Believe It ” has been called part biography, part manifesto, and perfectly plots out how some defining moments in Lima’s life contributed to her success despite those events seeming like stumbling blocks when they first occurred.

The book’s subtitle, “How to Go From Underestimated to Unstoppable,” perfectly sums up the type of motivational read startup founders can expect from this business biography.

9. ‘The Widow Clicquot’ by Tilar Mazzeo

The business biography about one of the world’s most iconic food and beverage brands is a historical tale, but it proves the old adage that the more things change, the more they stay the same, and its insights are just as relevant to modern startup founders.

“The Widow Clicquot” is certainly a story of female empowerment in the startup space with writer Tillar Mazzeo relating how Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin managed to take control of her late husband’s business and turn it into an empire. All this while living at a time in history when women were not seen as business leaders. This is another biography that will be appreciated by female startup owners who are pushing to smash through those glass ceilings.

10. ‘Elon Musk’ by Ashlee Vance

This business biography, written by Ashlee Vance, is about such an accomplished entrepreneur that it covers three of the most well-known brands in the world. “Elon Musk,” a book about the businessman of the same name, will inspire and motivate any startup founder who feels their idea is crazy.

Musk, after all, was told this on several occasions by many different people, from his beginnings in South Africa to his journey through Silicon Valley, but when suddenly, his ideas started to take shape and change the world, those people would eat their words. The book also provides a sneak peek into what we can expect from Musk’s future plans for SpaceX and why he believes that company may just be his biggest yet.

A Memoir by the Creator of NIKE

Phil Knight | 5.00

business leader autobiography

Bill Gates This memoir, by the co-founder of Nike, is a refreshingly honest reminder of what the path to business success really looks like: messy, precarious, and riddled with mistakes. Candid, funny, suspenseful, literary - this is a memoir for people who love sport, but above all... (Source)

When a friend told Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank that, "You've just been hit in the ass by a golden horseshoe," they thought he was crazy. After all, both had just been fired. What the friend, Ken Langone, meant was that they now had the opportunity to create the kind of wide-open warehouse store that would help spark a consumer revolution through low prices, excellent customer service, and wide availability of products.

Built from Scratch is the story of how two incredibly determined and creative people-and their associates-built a business from nothing to 761 stores and $30 billion in sales in a mere twenty years.

Built from Scratch tells many colorful stories associated with The Home Depot's founding and meteoric rise; shows that a company can be a tough, growth-oriented competitor and still maintain a high sense of responsibility to the community; and provides great lessons useful to people in any business, from start-ups to the Fortune 500.

Liar's Poker

Michael Lewis | 4.09

With the eye and ear of a born storyteller, Michael Lewis shows us how things really worked on Wall Street....

With the eye and ear of a born storyteller, Michael Lewis shows us how things really worked on Wall Street. In the Salomon training program a roomful of aspirants is stunned speechless by the vitriolic profanity of the Human Piranha; out on the trading floor, bond traders throw telephones at the heads of underlings and Salomon chairman Gutfreund challenges his chief trader to a hand of liar's poker for one million dollars; around the world in London, Tokyo, and New York, bright young men like Michael Lewis, connected by telephones and computer terminals, swap gross jokes and find retail buyers for the staggering debt of individual companies or whole countries.

The bond traders, wearing greed and ambition and badges of honor, might well have swaggered straight from the pages of Bonfire of the Vanities . But for all thier outrageous behavior, they were in fact presiding over enormous changes in the world economy. Lewis's job, simply described, was to transfer money, in the form of bonds, from those outside America who saved to those inside America who consumed. In doing so, he generated tens of millions of dollars for Salomon Brothers, and earned for himself a ringside seat on the greatest financial spectacle of the decade: the leveraging of America.

Thought Leaders: 7 Business Biographies That Will Actually Teach You Something

business leader autobiography

Business biographies are a fascinating niche. Part how to, part battle against the odds, they can provide a helpful jolt of inspiration and motivation when we need it most.

That’s not to say by reading Richard Branson’s autobiography you’re suddenly on course to set up a luxury space travel business, but there’s certainly tidbits of transferable knowledge in there that might help you in a variety of circumstances.

Here’s our pick of the most informative, inspiring, entertaining and motivating business biographies.

Losing My Virginity – Richard Branson

business leader autobiography

“You will either go to prison or be a millionaire.” So said Richard Branson’s former headmaster, a line which Branson enjoys recounting in his autobiography, Losing My Virginity. As far as entrepreneurial autobiographies go it’s unmissable reading, chronicling the life of a man who along with Elon Musk is currently giving NASA a run for their money on the space travel front.

With ample sections dedicated to business and pleasure, adventure and bravado, it’s a rip-roaring business yarn chronicling an extraordinary life.

Key Takeaway: Taking risk. Business is full of them and of course risk does not always equal reward but from being brave enough to rival BA to the Tubular Bells punt that bankrolled his music label, gut-driven risk-taking has paid off handsomely for Branson.

That Will Never Work – Marc Randolph

business leader autobiography

Mark Randolph’s That Will Never Work acts a trip down memory lane for the entrepreneur as he talks readers through the early years of a little company he co-founded called Netflix. Rising from the ashes of a dead industry it was the power of algorithms that sparked real momentum when recommendations for niche and non-blockbusters allowed the company to save money licensing popular titles.

Two buy-out attempts, by Amazon and Blockbuster, were batted away before the company went public in 2002.

Key Takeaway: Don’t sit around waiting for a eureka moment. Randolph stresses this in the book and debunks the myth that it was consistent late fees on a rental copy of Apollo 13 that inspired Netflix. Instead, it’s the constant back and forth and refinement of ideas that leads to success.

Banking On It – Anne Boden

business leader autobiography

Anne Boden has said in interviews that Banking On It is not a memoir as there’s still so much to come, but despite this, Boden’s retelling of the Starling Bank story and its revolutionary entrance onto the post-2008 banking scene is part business book, part financial tell-all.

From the much reported Monzo coup to the remarkable almost miss of the message that secured funding, the Starling Bank story is a blue chip epic that will no doubt one day lend itself handsomely to the big screen.

Key Takeaway: Be the revolution you wish to see in the industry. So you, a 5ft Welsh woman in your fifties, want to challenge the most monolithic, exclusive industry on earth, do you? Pull the other one. But that’s exactly what Boden did. No mountain is too high.

Let My People Go Surfing – Yvon Chouinard

business leader autobiography

The name Yvon Chouinard probably won’t ring as many bells in the UK as it does in the United States, but after the rising popularity of outdoor and technical wear , his brand Patagonia certainly will.

Chouinard’s book tells the story of an outdoors enthusiast who reluctantly fell into business creating the clothes he himself wished to go on adventures in. His company soon skyrocketed but his morals and convictions remained the same and as a result he’s steered his company towards being one of the most sustainable and forward-thinking on earth.

Key Takeaway: You don’t have to be a dick. It might sound simple, but you can run a multimillion pound business and not be a money-hungry bastard, hell-bent on world destruction in the pursuit of profits. Innovation can go hand-in-hand with conservation.

Shoe Dog – Phil Knight

business leader autobiography

Starting with the company’s inception in 1960 and finishing with the debut public offering in the 1980s, Shoe Dog is the memoir from Nike Founder Phil ‘Buck’ Knight.

It’s difficult to compile any list of business biographies without it and needless to say it’s a fountain of intriguing insight and transferable lessons. From picking a logo and name to the importance of overcoming setbacks, Shoe Dog is a monumental piece of writing from one of the most notable businessmen of the 21st century.

Key Takeaway: Growth can be low and slow. Knight’s account of Nike in the book starts in 1962, but there’s a whole decade of low-key trials and tribulations and gradual but not particularly dramatic progress until genuine recognition in 1972 when his consistent appearances at track and running events are rewarded with uptake of the brand. Be patient.

Zero To One – Peter Thiel

business leader autobiography

Transforming online payments forever, and making a fortune whilst doing so, Paypal founder Peter Thiel is one of Silicon Valley’s most recognised icons. Zero To One compiles his thoughts and the lessons learned building one of the most successful start ups ever out of what has been the modern California gold rush.

Tinged with Thiel’s trademark outspoken manner, Zero To One covers everything one needs to consider when running a tech business, from teams to monopolies.

Key Takeaway: Be unique. Simple enough, huh? Yet Thiel has some good points to make: it’s not enough for your idea to be unique, it has to be equally valuable. However, if it’s both of those, you save yourself a lot of competition and you can swap the hassle of marketing wars for time spent focusing on development.

How I Built This – Guy Raz

business leader autobiography

The last entry on our list isn’t a biography or memoir per say, but along with its namesake NPR podcast, How I Built This is a must for those interested in business, entrepreneurialism and how some of the world’s most notable brands came to be.

Pulling together the lessons learned from interviews with company founders spanning the likes of Patagonia, Headspace and Dell, to name but a few, the book is the perfect written companion to the award-winning podcast and bursting with insight and human experience.

Key Takeaway: Resilience is key. The stories businesspeople recount to Raz are as much about riding through hard times as they are of smart, innovative ideas. With world-challenging ideas often comes equally large problems and setbacks. The the most successful people batten down the hatches and hold on for dear life until the storm is over.

5 Inspiring Business Biographies Every Entrepreneur Should Read

Great biographies can motivate, inspire, inform... and even entertain. here are my five (okay, seven) of my favorites..

girl in a library

Most business owners read the occasional how-to business book, but sometimes a biography of someone successful can be just what you need for motivation and inspiration.

After all, those people achieved their dreams... so why can't you?

The following books span a range of business topics, from building one of the first corporations to launching a new industry to creating the foundation of modern banking and lending:

Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller by Ron Chernow

Bean counters of the world unite: Rockefeller started as an accountant and ended as the richest man in the world. Obsessively attentive to detail, ruthlessly competitive, calm in a crisis, willing to make tough decisions, great at spotting talent, famously generous.

Rockefeller shows how to build a massive company from an emerging industry.

The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt by T.J. Stiles

Cornelius Vanderbilt arguably did more than any other individual to create modern capitalism and a corporate economy. He also foreshadowed our cult of celebrity; Twain said of Vanderbilt, "You seem to be the idol of... a swarm of small souls who sing of your unimportant private habits and sayings and doings as if your millions gave them dignity."

If you hate corporate life, blame Vanderbilt. But don't argue with his success--at one time he was worth one out of every twenty dollars in circulation.

Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

Granted he had an affair, was blackmailed, and was later killed in a duel, but along the way he also nearly singlehandedly created public (rather than private) finance in the United States, and along with Washington and a few others was largely responsible for ensuring America survived its formative years.

If you have an axe to grind where the U.S. financial and banking systems are concerned, hey, blame Hamilton. But first try to think up a better system; his vision has survived for over two hundred years.

Andrew Carnegie by David Nasaw

Tim Ferriss, eat your heart out--Carnegie was the richest man in the world while generally only working a few hours a day. Started out with little education, no money, no network, and no "tribe." Focused on technological advances to ensure he was the low-cost producer and held on to profits so he could snap up struggling businesses during economic downturns.

Then he set out to give almost all his money away--and almost succeeded at that, too.

The People's Tycoon: Henry Ford and the American Century by Steven Watts

Henry Ford proves you don't have to be first to be successful. He didn't invent the automobile or the assembly line, he just did both better than anyone else. He showed that customers willingly embrace fewer choices and greater reliability. And he created one of the first mass production manufacturing systems staffed by well-paid skilled workers.

Ford believed in the "redemptive power of material goods," meaning he'd feel right at home among today's marketers.

And a couple of bonus books:

Clouds of Glory: The Life and Legend of Robert E. Lee by Michael Korda

While I in no way mean to insult soldiers by comparing business to war, there are at least tiny parallels in terms of mission, decision-making, perseverance, etc. As Korda says, "Lee, like Wellington, indeed like all great generals, had the ability to look on the misery of a battlefield, absorb its horrors--he never turned away from them--and then move on calmly to his next decision."

Sounds a little like what entrepreneurs do every day.

Caesar: Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy

You know he came, he saw, he conquered, and he spoke some of the most famous last words ("Et tu, Brute?") a person never actually uttered.

But Caesar was also a master at building a personal brand. He played politics like a maestro, networked like a fiend, built a vast web of clients who owed their careers and fortunes to him--and backed it all up with world-class fighting and leadership skills.

By the end you'll want to go out and conquer your own territory... and hopefully avoid the whole Ides of March thing.

2. Let My People Go Surfing, Yvon Chouinard

“Let my people go surfing” is a testimony of the Patagonia founder who is passionate about nature and the environment. In the valley, he could smell the selenium ponds and see the cotton field that let him think about cotton growth and production.

3. Pour Your Heart Into It, Howard Schultz

Howard Schulz is not the founder of Starbucks , but he is a chairman emeritus and the former SEO of the company. He led the company to its present success and he has a lot to say about the dedication and persistence in building the business where the main ingredient is coffee.

Schultz never forgot his roots and his beginnings. He was raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn where no one had any privileged background. For all these reasons, Schultz reminds us to never forget our roots and to always help the people where some potential exists.

business magnates, leadership skills

4. Kitchen Confidential, Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain was a world-famous chef who had a passionate life inside and outside the kitchen. He traveled the world in search of the best tastes and he always managed to discover new potential in the places he visited.

In his book “Kitchen Confidential”, he describes his first experiences with sex, drugs, and new dishes. On one occasion, he tried to eat oysters and this experience was huge for him.

When it comes to the business message, you can find out that if you approach the business the right way, you can succeed. At the same time, success is very difficult in the world of cooking, which is why you have to have irrational and masochistic motives to do this job and reach perfection in every segment of the culinary act.

The book teaches us how to be completely involved in the business we do if we want to see a positive outcome.

All of these inspiring business autobiographies are there to show us the way of doing things in a detailed manner. Only if we completely devote ourselves to the business can we expect good results. That is why each business decision counts when it comes to overall success.

Read the mentioned books and see why some of the most popular business persons have that secret code for the business results.

Published: December 20, 2023

As a writer, I have to let readers and potential clients know my expertise, my skills, and why they should work with me or be interested in what I say. So, a professional bio is a must in my industry.

Hands type at a laptop

Though I'm definitely familiar with professional bios, I can admit they can be challenging. What do I include? What do readers need to know?

As daunting as writing a professional bio can be, professional bios are crucial when applying for jobs, seeking new clients, or networking. A professional bio also gives the world a brief snapshot of you and your professional ideals.

If you‘re at a loss for how to write a professional bio that packs a punch, I’ve got you covered. In this journey, tools like HubSpot’s user-friendly drag-and-drop website builder can be instrumental in showcasing your professional bio online with ease and style.

A professional bio or biography is a short overview of your experience. Professional bios usually include details about education, employment, achievements, and relevant skills.

Purpose of Professional Bios

A bio tells an audience about who you are, what you've done, and what you can do. It can help potential employers, fans, or customers understand your personality and what you stand for.

Writing a bio without a clear starting point is challenging — believe me, I've tried. To ease the process, here are some templates I put together to get you started.

I‘ve found it’s best to keep your professional bio honest and to the point. Too long of a bio, and you risk losing your audience's attention. After all, audiences will only read a web page for less than a minute before clicking elsewhere.

And honesty is key because most consumers and clients won‘t invest in someone or something if it doesn’t seem trustworthy. In fact, 67% of consumers say they must trust a brand before investing in its products or services.

What should a professional bio say?

No one wants to work with a clone — your professional bio should be as unique as you.

When writing your bio, include important professional roles and achievements. Add your passions, interests, and how you bring your values to your work. Finally, your bio should let readers know you and reflect your personality.

Here are the elements I recommend including when writing a professional bio:

Professional Roles and Achievements

It's essential to highlight your career roles and achievements in your bio. This can include your current position, previous roles, and notable accomplishments. It will help establish your expertise and credibility and start your bio on the right note.

Passions and Interests

This might be less essential, but it will help humanize you. Remember: Bios are shared via an impersonal medium, like a screen, and can sometimes feel distant if we don't take the proper steps.

Share your passions and interests, whether or not they relate to your work or industry. That way, you can show enthusiasm and dedication outside your professional life.

Plus, you could find common ground with readers — which is always beneficial.

Take a look at this short bio by HubSpot staff writer Erica Santiago.

business leader autobiography

"Plus," she adds, "I'm always happy to talk about my cats at any given moment. You never know when a fellow cat mom could be reading."

Values and Work Approach

Your values can sometimes show your work ethic more effectively than your career path. It can also help you endear yourself to employers and colleagues who want to work with people with similar values.

So don‘t be shy: Share how you incorporate your values into your work. Whether it’s a commitment to innovation, customer satisfaction, or ethical decision-making, explain what drives you and be enthusiastic about it.

Your Personality

Remember: Your bio should always include a taste of your personality! Your sense of humor, creativity, or collaborative nature could all give readers a sense of who you are. This helps readers connect with you on a more personal level.

Remember to tailor your bio for different platforms and audiences. Also, keep it concise and impactful while highlighting the most relevant information in each context.

First-Person Bio vs. Third-Person Bio

While first-person bios are common, third-person bios can be more effective in formal situations.

Your decision to write your professional bio in the first or third person depends on your desire to leave a more personable or assertive impression.

Both approaches work, provided you tailor them to your goals and audience. What’s important is to be clear and tell your story in a way that connects with your reader.

How to Write a First-Person Bio

Writing in the first person can be a great way to connect with your audience when building a personal brand. When you write a first-person bio, use "I" or "me" to make yourself relatable and approachable.

Here's one way I’d write a first-person bio:

"I'm a freelance writer specializing in small business content. I've worked with companies in a variety of industries like home care to fine leather goods."

Speaking in the first person here connects you with a client or brand based on your experience and opinions. Put another way, writing a first-person bio is like telling your story to your audience.

Here are a few tips to make your first-person bio great:

Don’t start every sentence with "I."

Showing instead of telling is a great approach.

Let’s say you’re a writer who wants to create a short professional bio. Instead of saying, "I love to write," you can say, "Writer. Bad but enthusiastic dancer."

This portrays your writing skill, shows your personality outside of writing as a dancer, and includes a little sense of humor, which is essential for a writer.

Remember, you know yourself better than anyone.

Adding a back story to your bio helps create context for the roles and successes you write about. Think of it like a case study about who you were, what you are now, and the process that got you to your current position.

Focus on valuable details.

Quick facts about you can showcase your identity and values. For example, if you're writing a bio for LinkedIn, think about how to tie your hobby into what you do.

Let's say Animal Crossing is your hobby. Does it align with your career aspirations? It can be a great addition to your bio if you want to pursue a video game career.

However, if your interests lie elsewhere, including a more relevant hobby is better.

How to Write a Third-Person Bio

Third-person bios sound more authoritative and objective. So, if you’re job searching in a formal industry, applying for grants, or trying to get published, you may want to stick to the third person.

For instance, when you write a third-person bio, you may start with:

"Jasmine Montgomery is a Senior Hiring Manager at L’Oreal based in New York. She recruits across several business units to connect with the brightest talent from around the globe."

By only using your name and pronouns to speak about yourself here, you are letting your title and skill set speak for themselves.

These bios create distance between the subject of the bio (you) and the reader through a third person. This person could be anyone, but they usually speak in a tone emphasizing their expertise.

This makes third-person bios feel aloof or overly formal sometimes.

Ideally, your third-person bio should sound friendly but polished, like a message from a close colleague at work. Here are a few tips on how to write a great third-person bio.

Write from the perspective of someone you know and trust.

It can be challenging to write about yourself, so try to see yourself from the perspective of your favorite person at work or a mentor you trust. This can help you write from a position of authority without feeling self-conscious.

Show the reader why they should trust your opinion.

A professional bio often reflects a specific industry or niche. With this in mind, your text should include relevant details that professionals in your industry know. Avoid jargon whenever you can.

Remember, you're telling a story.

If you want a third-person bio, but you're used to writing in first-person, it may help to write it the most comfortable way for you.

Your professional bio is an essential piece of writing, so edit it carefully. Edit your writing from both points of view and see which works best for your target audience.

Here's how to write a professional bio, step by step.

  • Create an 'About' page for your website or profile.
  • Begin writing your bio with your first and last name.
  • Mention any associated brand name you might use.
  • State your current position and what you do.
  • Include at least one professional accomplishment.
  • Describe your values and how they inform your career.
  • Briefly tell your readers who you are outside of work.
  • Use humor or a personal story to add flavor to your professional bio.

If you’re anything like me, you probably don't think about your professional bio until you’re asked to "send one over via email."

You have one afternoon to come up with it, so you scramble together a bio that ends up reading like this:

"Rodney Erickson is a content marketing professional at HubSpot, a CRM platform that helps companies attract visitors, convert leads, and close customers.

Previously, Rodney worked as a marketing manager for a tech software startup. He graduated with honors from Columbia University with a dual degree in Business Administration and Creative Writing."

To be fair, in certain contexts, your professional bio needs to be more formal, like Mr. Erickson's up there. But there are also cases where writing a personable and conversational bio is good.

Whether you choose the formal or casual route, use the following steps to create a perfect bio.

1. Create an 'About' page for your website or profile.

You need an online space to keep your professional bio. Here are a few to consider (some of these you might already have in place):

  • Facebook Business page .
  • Industry blog byline .
  • Instagram account .
  • Personal website .
  • LinkedIn profile .
  • Industry website .
  • Personal blog .

As you'll see in the professional bio examples below, the length and tone of your bio will differ depending on the platforms you use.

Instagram, for example, allows only 150 characters of bio space, whereas you can write as much as you want on your website or Facebook Business page.

2. Begin writing your bio with your first and last name.

If your readers remember nothing else about your bio, they should remember your name. Therefore, it's a good idea for your first and last name to be the first two words of your professional bio.

Even if your name is printed above this bio (hint: it should), this is a rare moment where it's okay to be redundant.

For example, if I were writing my bio, I might start it like this:

Lindsay Kolowich

Lindsay Kolowich is a Senior Marketing Manager at HubSpot.

3. Mention any associated brand name you might use.

Will your professional bio represent you or a business you work for? Ensure you mention the brand you associate with in your bio. If you're a freelancer, you may have a personal business name or pseudonym you advertise to your clients.

Here are a few examples:

  • Lindsay Kolowich Marketing.
  • SEO Lindsay.
  • Kolowich Consulting.
  • Content by Kolowich (what do you think ... too cheesy?).

Maybe you founded your own company and want its name to be separate from your real name. Keep it simple like this: "Lindsay Kolowich is the founder and CEO of Kolowich Consulting."

4. State your current position and what you do.

Whether you're the author of a novel or a mid-level specialist, use the following few lines of your bio to describe what you do in that position. Refrain from assuming your audience knows what your job title entails.

Make your primary responsibilities known so readers can know you and understand what you offer to your industry.

5. Include at least one professional accomplishment.

Just as a business touts its client successes through case studies, your professional bio should let your audience know what you've achieved.

What have you done for yourself — as well as for others — that makes you a valuable player in your industry?

6. Describe your values and how they inform your career.

Why do you do what you do? What might make your contribution to the market different from your colleagues? What are the values that make your business a worthwhile investment to others?

Create a professional bio that answers these questions.

7. Briefly tell your readers who you are outside of work.

Transition from describing your values in work to defining who you are outside of work. This may include:

  • Your family.
  • Your hometown.
  • Sports you play.
  • Hobbies and interests.
  • Favorite music and travel destinations.
  • Side hustles you're working on.

People like connecting with other people. The more transparent you are about who you are personally, the more likable you'll be to people reading about you.

8. Use humor or a personal story to add flavor to your professional bio.

End your professional bio on a good or, more specifically, a funny note. By leaving your audience with something quirky or unique, you can ensure they'll leave your website with a pleasant impression of you.

Following the steps above when writing your bio is important, but take your time with one section. People consume lots of information daily. So ensure your bio hooks 'em in the first line, and you won’t lose them.

(P.S. Want to boost your professional brand? Take one of HubSpot Academy's free certification courses . In just one weekend, you can add a line to your resume and bio that over 60,000 marketers covet.)

Why Good Bios Are Important for a Professional

You may think, "How many people read professional bios, anyway?"

The answer: A lot. Though there's no way to tell who is reading it, you want it catchy. Your professional bio will delight the right people coming across it on multiple platforms.

Professional bios can live on your LinkedIn profile , company website, guest posts, speaker profiles, Twitter bio , Instagram bio , and many other places.

And most importantly, it‘s the tool you can leverage most when you’re networking.

Bottom line? People will read your professional bio. Whether they remember it or it makes them care about you is a matter of how well you present yourself to your intended audience.

1. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie : Author

Bio platform: personal website.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie begins her professional bio with an invitation to her roots.

In a few paragraphs, she describes when and where she was born, her family, her education, her honorary degrees, and the depth of her work, which has been translated into 30 languages and several publications.

She can keep readers engaged by leading with a powerful hook that aligns with her target audience’s marketing needs.

  • There’s clarity about who Chima serves.
  • The hook is bold, catchy, and compels anyone to read further.
  • Including client results makes clients visualize what they can expect.

3. DJ Nexus : DJ

Bio platform: facebook.

This New England-based DJ has single-handedly captured the Likes of over 2,000 people in and beyond Boston, MA. And even if you don‘t listen to the type of music he produces, it’s hard not to read his compelling Facebook bio.

For instance, consider his tagline, under "About" — " Quiet during the day. QUITE LOUD at night! " DJ Nexus tells you when he works awesomely. I got goosebumps just imagining a dance club where he might play music.

The second is the "long version," which is even more interesting than the first. Why? It reads like a story — a compelling one, at that. In fact, it gets hilarious in some parts.

The second sentence of the bio reads: "He was frightened of public school, loved playing baseball and football, ran home to watch ape films on the 4:30 Movie, listened to The Jam and The Buzzcocks, and read magic trick books."

Here's another excerpt from the middle:

It's a well-put value proposition that sets her apart from the rest of the HR industry.

Marie concludes her bio with a smooth mix of professional skills, like her Spanish fluency, and personal interests, such as podcasting and Star Wars (she mentions the latter with just the right amount of humor).

  • Straight off the bat, Marie uses a story to share her experiences of how she began as a recruiter.
  • It provides a subtle pitch for readers to check out her podcast.
  • The bio exudes Maries approachable, fun, and playful personality.

8. Wonbo Woo : Executive Producer

Wonbo Woo is the executive producer of WIRED's video content and has several impressive credits to his name. What does this mean for his professional bio? He has to prioritize.

With this in mind, Wonbo opens his bio with the most eye-catching details first (if the image below is hard to read, click it to see the full copy ).

I wouldn‘t necessarily be inclined to follow Chris if his bio had simply read, "I post beautiful images." But images that inspire me to travel? Now that’s something I can get behind.

Last, he ends on a humble, sweet note: "He is happiest with his wife Breanne raising their two sons." So inject personal information into your bio — it makes you seem approachable.

  • It highlights Chris’s achievement without bragging.
  • The last sentence portrays Chris as a responsible man who loves his family.
  • The well-written bio speaks to nature lovers who like the outdoors, surfing, and more. This gives them reasons to follow Chris.

10. Lisa Quine : Creative Consultant

Bio platform: portfolio website.

Creative professionals who specialize in visual art may find it challenging to balance the writing of their bio and displaying of their portfolio. Not Lisa Quine. Lisa has an exceptional balance of her professional bio and creative work.

Throughout her bio, you'll notice the number of murals she's completed and a brief timeline of her career. This helps her paint the picture of who she is as a professional.

The rest of her bio similarly focuses on Twine's strengths as someone who’s able to take hair care "back to basics."

business leader autobiography

Mouzon effectively grips the reader's attention with this introduction and then dives into some of her impressive accomplishments — including a brand now sold at Urban Outfitters and Target.

The language used throughout Mouzon's bio is authentic, real, and honest.

For instance, in the second paragraph, she admits:

"While building a brand may have looked effortless from the outside, starting a business at age 23 with no resources or funding quickly forced me to realize that early-stage entrepreneurship was anything but transparent."

business leader autobiography

As an avid Zumba fan, I was excited to include this one. Perez styles his LinkedIn bio as a short story, starting with his background as a hard-working teen who held three jobs by age 14.

His bio tells the fun and fascinating origin story of Zumba, in which Perez, an aerobics teacher in Florida at the time, forgot his music for class and used a Latin music cassette tape instead ... "And it was an instant hit!"

His bio continues:

"Shortly after he was connected to Alberto Periman and Alberto Aghion, and Zumba was officially created ... What started as a dream now has 15 million people in more than 200,000 locations in 186 countries who take Zumba classes every week."

business leader autobiography

There's something in there for everyone.

  • The last section of the bio shows Ann’s warm personality — "Ann lives in Boston, where she is Mom to creatures two- and four-legged."
  • Written in the third person, this bio has lots of proof (like followers), which shows Ann is a terrific marketing leader.

If you're posting a bio on a social media account or sending a quick blurb to a client, you want to keep it short and sweet while showcasing your accomplishments.

To get started, use these best practices for writing your short professional bio:

  • Introduce yourself.
  • State what you do.
  • Add key skills or areas of expertise.
  • Include a personal mission statement
  • Celebrate your wins.
  • Provide your contact information.
  • Show them your personality.

1. Introduce yourself.

Your introduction is your first impression, so always begin by telling people who you are. You may start with a greeting like, "Hello, my name is" or "Hi! Let me first introduce myself …" when sending your bio as a message.

If you’re writing a bio for an online platform, stating your name at the beginning works as well.

Leading with your name — even as a question — is important for recognition and building relationships.

2. State what you do.

Give people an idea of what you do daily and where you work. Your job title is how the people put you into context and consider whether your profession relates to their industry.

So detail your most relevant work in your short bios, like CEO, professor, and author.

Take a cue from Angela Duckworth , who specifies what she does in her LinkedIn bio:

business leader autobiography

3. Add key skills or areas of expertise.

If you send a bio to a client or potential employer, highlight your most valuable skills. For instance, if your expertise is in social media marketing and content creation, like Ivanka Dekoning , list these skills.

business leader autobiography
  • A joke. "Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. At least that’s what I learned when I created…"
  • Mention a hobby. "I’ll be honest: for me, tennis is life — Go Nadal!"
  • A fun fact. "Every year, I watch 100 new films! I’m a cinephile and love every movie genre."
  • A few emojis related to your interests. "🎶🤖🎾🎬🎭"

Whichever way you choose to get personal, give people a glimpse into who you are as an individual.

When writing a short bio, it can be tempting to pack in as much relevant information about yourself as possible — but this isn’t the most effective approach.

Instead, focus on including the details that you and your audience care about most and leave out the fluff.

Let's dive into a few examples of short professional bios.

Short Professional Bio Examples

  • Tristen Taylor: Marketing Manager
  • Lianna Patch: Copywriter
  • Precious Oboidhe: Content Strategist and Writer
  • Rebecca Bollwitt: Writer
  • Megan Gilmore: Cookbook Author
  • Bea Dixon: Feminine Care Founder
  • Tammy Hembrow: Instagram Influencer
  • Dr. Cody: Chiropractor
  • Larry Kim: Founder
  • Dharmesh Shah: Founder and CTO
  • Lily Ugbaja: Content Strategist
  • Ian Anderson Gray: Marketer
  • Van Jones: Political Commentator, Author, and Lawyer

1. Tristen Taylor: Marketing Manager

Bio platform: blog byline.

Tristen Taylor is a Marketing Manager here at HubSpot. She's written content for HubSpot's Marketing, Sales, and Customer Service blogs; her blog author bio is one of my favorites.

What I love most about Tristen's bio is that it’s a great example of how to deliver information about yourself that is relevant to your work while also sharing fun details that audiences will find relatable.

Her bio reads:

"Building from her experience with GoCo.io and Southwest Airlines, Tristen's work has been recognized by Marketing Brew and BLACK@INBOUND. She lives in Washington, DC, attending anime conventions and painting in her free time."

Gilmore further includes a CTA link within her Instagram bio that leads followers to free, ready-to-use recipes. You might think, " Why would she do that since it discourages people from buying her book?"

But that couldn't be further from the truth.

By giving her followers the chance to try out her recipes, she's slowly turning leads into customers. After I tried a few of her Instagram recipes and loved them, I bought her book, knowing I'd like more of what she offered.

  • The bio is short and direct.
  • The CTA link includes an invitation for people to join her newsletter. Meaning, she can build her email list.

6. Bea Dixon : Feminine Care Founder

Bea Dixon, Founder and CEO of The Honey Pot Company, efficiently uses the space on her Instagram profile to highlight who she is as a well-rounded human — not just a businesswoman.

For instance, while she highlights her girl boss attitude with a tiara emoji, she equally calls attention to her fashion interests (Free People), her pets, Boss and Sadie, and her love for ramen noodles.

What more do you need to know?

Ian doesn't take his bio too seriously but uses every character to highlight everything about him.

He includes his skills as a marketer and podcast host, who he is outside work as a dad, and what he can help you do. His smiles also give the bio a sense of humor and realness.

Mark Cuban likes Kamala Harris' push for healthcare transparency — but he wants to see more from her about crypto

  • Vice President Kamala Harris has been making her pitch to CEOs and business leaders.
  • Billionaire Mark Cuban shared with Business Insider a few points about Harris that he liked.
  • "She wants all businesses to succeed," Cuban argued.

Insider Today

Democratic Presidential Nominee Kamala Harris has been making her pitch to business leaders and CEOs as she races to define herself and her agenda for the 2024 race.

Mark Cuban is one of hundreds of VCs and tech entrepreneurs who have voiced support for Harris. The billionaire emailed Business Insider a few notes about what he likes about the nominee — healthcare transparency — and what he would like to see from Harris — more details about cryptocurrency — if he, as a business leader, was being pitched by the campaign.

Harris met with corporate executives behind the scenes even months before she replaced President Joe Biden at the top of the ticket, The New York Times reported in July. Allies of her campaign have been privately courting business leaders during the Democratic National Convention this week to make the case for why the VP could be fruitful for Corporate America, CNBC reported Wednesday.

Harris has presented herself as a pro-business promising to make things easier for newcomer entrepreneurs by cutting "needless bureaucracy and unnecessary regulatory red tape." While also courting and getting support from labor unions.

However, the vice president has not rolled out a detailed economic plan. Critics have said that the proposals released so far on price-gouging bans or first-time homebuyer subsidies are light on specifics, while policies, like a hike on corporate taxes, are a carryover from the Biden administration.

In broad strokes, the campaign has so far focused on support for middle and lower-income Americans , Business Insider's Laila Maidan reported.

A spokesperson for the Harris campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Cuban has already expressed support for Harris and defended some of her policy proposals . But, he added in an email to BI, "the devils in the details."

Here are a few points that Cuban shared with us on qualities and policy approaches Harris has that he believes other CEOs would like to see.

'Not an ideologue'

Cuban told BI in an email that he's looking for a candidate who is "not an ideologue," a perhaps not-so-subtle jab at Harris' Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump , who has repeatedly been described as such by his critics.

Related stories

The billionaire added that he wants someone "pragmatic and open-minded. All of which she is."

Self-awareness

Another quality Cuban said he sees in Harris that sets her apart from Trump is her self-awareness — and that'll help her when she's trying to reel in business leaders, Cuban wrote.

"One of the things that makes KH stand apart from the Republican nominee is that she is self-aware," he wrote. "She knows what she doesn't and is willing to listen to business(es), from the smallest corner yogurt shop to the giants of industry."

Support for employees

Cuban argued that Harris is a pro-business candidate who wants to support companies and businesses while also lifting up their employees.

"She wants all businesses to succeed," Cuban wrote. "She just wants their employees to share in their success. Which I don't think any entrepreneur or CEO is going to disagree with."

Clarity on crypto

As a cryptocurrency investor , Cuban told BI in a separate conversation that he was interested in Harris' pitch for "regulatory clarity" around the digital asset industry.

Brian Nelson, a policy advisor to the Harris campaign, said during a Bloomberg News roundtable on Wednesday that the vice president will support the crypto market in a way that would allow it to flourish while ensuring safeguards.

"She's going to support policies that ensure that emerging technologies and that sort of industry can continue to grow," Nelson said during the conversation, acknowledging there is a need for "stable rules, rules of the road."

Coinbase Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad said on X that he has participated in a "number of discussions with the Harris team" and that Nelson's statement was a "second step in the right direction."

Transparency in healthcare

This point may be more specific to folks like Cuban, who has championed lower costs for drugs through his discount pill-mailing service, Cost Plus Drugs .

But the billionaire told BI that he appreciated Harris "talking about transparency in healthcare."

While laying out her economic agenda at a rally on August 16, Harris vowed to lower to cost of prescription drugs, "demand transparency" around drug pricing, and cancel medical debt for millions of Americans.

"Of course, the devils in the details," Cuban added. "But so far, I like what I've heard."

How business leaders can help transform the future of education.

Harsh Singh is the founder of Big Apple Admissions - an educational consultancy pioneering the outcome-based contracting.

With the impacts of GenAI tools like Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT being felt across schools, the call for a transformative approach to education has become even more urgent . I believe that business leaders, who are often those best armed with expertise in innovation, strategic planning and resource optimization, are in a prime position to catalyze significant changes in the public education sector.

This article outlines areas where I think you, as a business leader, can help revolutionize public education and ensure a brighter future for the next generation.

Advocacy For Policy Reform And Smart Investment

Business leaders can impact public education by advocating for smarter investment rather than simply more funding. While cities like New York spend approximately $40,000 per student , the key lies in how the funds are allocated.

It's important to advocate to reallocate resources toward areas that directly impact student learning and development, such as modernizing curricula, integrating technology and supporting teacher development.

Election 2024 Swing State Polls: Harris Leads Or Ties Trump In All Battleground States, Latest Survey Finds

Kamala harris defends biden admin’s economic record in first big interview—but says ‘more to do’, kamala harris addresses economy in major cnn interview—here’s what to know about her policy agenda.

For example, there is a tremendous opportunity for AI technologies and tools to help tailor educational content to individual student needs, provide instant feedback and support adaptive learning technologies. Business leaders should also emphasize the importance of developing students’ emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.

As a model, in the last few years, the San Francisco Unified School District and others have implemented a " weighted student formula " that allocates funds based on student needs. This approach, inspired by business strategies for resource optimization, has allowed for targeted investments in high-need areas.

Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs)

At the heart of both advocacy and investment, I think public-private partnerships have the potential to revolutionize the educational landscape. But the true impact comes when these partnerships are rooted in personal commitment from business leaders.

Therefore, it's important to not only contribute corporate resources but also your expertise and time. This direct involvement can range from mentorship and volunteer teaching to funding specific, high-need initiatives like STEM programs or digital literacy workshops.

For example, individual leaders from tech companies can offer coding classes or digital skills training, providing students with both practical knowledge and real-world experience. By directly engaging with schools, you can ensure that your contributions are effectively utilized and bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements.

I think an exemplary case of this is the partnership between IBM and P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools), where IBM employees volunteer as mentors and provide expertise in technology education.

Curriculum Overhaul And Teacher Training

The current education system often lags behind technological and societal advancements. As a part of your focus on advocacy and investment, you can collaborate with educators to overhaul the curriculum and make it more relevant to today’s world.

This involves integrating courses on digital literacy, coding and data analytics while placing equal emphasis on soft skills like communication, empathy and ethical reasoning. With the rise of large language models (LLMs) and AI, these human-centric skills are becoming increasingly valuable.

Past curriculum, the quality of education is intrinsically linked to the quality of its educators. Here again, business leaders are well-positioned to provide training in the latest educational technologies and methodologies. Look to sponsor and create workshops, conferences and certification programs that allow teachers to stay current with the latest educational trends and methods.

One thing I personally believe could impact the whole ecosystem is the involvement of stay-at-home or work-from-home individuals. There are so many people who are immensely talented, but either don’t know how to help or aren’t incentivized to. Ask yourself how you can reach these dormant educators.

Establishing Innovation Labs And Incubators

Creating innovation labs and incubators is another way to utilize your position and expertise to help foster a culture of creativity and innovation. These spaces can serve as hubs where students experiment with new ideas, collaborate on projects and develop entrepreneurial skills.

Outfitted with the latest technologies, including AI tools, these labs can help students explore fields like robotics and data science. As earlier mentioned, when it comes to curriculum overhaul, they should also emphasize the development of soft skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and adaptability alongside technical abilities.

Funding And Scholarships With Purpose

For many students, financial barriers are obstacles to a quality education. Business leaders can help by establishing targeted scholarships and funding programs that focus on students from low-income families or underrepresented communities. Beyond scholarships, you can help fund initiatives that directly enhance educational outcomes such as advanced technology in classrooms or specialized training for teachers.

Investing in projects that modernize school infrastructure or enhance safety can help create a more conducive learning environment. Look particularly to invest in areas that yield the highest impact on educational quality and equity, like the development of comprehensive data systems to track student progress. Of course, when creating these systems, policies should be put in place that balance data-driven decision making with privacy protections that ensure the ethical use of student data.

Cultivating A Culture Of Lifelong Learning

In this rapidly changing world, education must extend beyond traditional schooling. Business leaders can assist in this area as well by helping to create alternative pathways for continuous learning. Look to establish partnerships between high schools, colleges and community centers to develop career tracks as well as fund adult education and retraining initiatives.

Efforts to support ongoing skill development can help graduates adapt to new career opportunities and market demands. Platforms for knowledge sharing between industry professionals and educators can also foster a culture of lifelong learning.

As a business leader, you likely possess the resources, influence and expertise to drive meaningful changes in public education. By advocating for smart investments, fostering public-private partnerships, overhauling curricula and integrating new technologies, you have the power to significantly improve educational outcomes.

I believe business leaders' involvement in public education is crucial for preparing the next generation to succeed. The challenges facing public education are significant, but with strategic and thoughtful assistance from business leaders, I believe they can be overcome.

4 Warning Signs of Ethical Burnout on Your Team

  • Richard Bistrong,
  • Dina Denham Smith,
  • Ron Carucci

business leader autobiography

Pressure can cause employees to focus solely on hitting their targets at the expense of moral considerations.

High stress at work can destabilize people’s ethical compass, putting them at heightened risk of ethical lapses. When employees focus solely on achieving their targets, deadlines, or personal financial goals at the expense of ethical considerations — when doing the right thing feels burdensome compared to seemingly less-costly shortcuts — they can teeter on “ethical burnout.” To prevent this, it’s crucial to spot the signs and root out the contributing forces early. The authors present four warning signs that your employees may be heading toward ethical burnout — and strategies to counteract these forces before it’s too late.

Everyone has experienced stress-inducing pressure at work: ambitious financial targets, tough performance reviews, and shrewd competitors, and so on. The resulting stress can harm not just people’s personal well-being, research shows it can also erode their commitment to ethical behavior. This phenomenon, known as ethical fatigue , makes it challenging to take the high road and maintain integrity when faced with complex decisions.

James Sabry, M.D., Ph.D., Appointed EVP, Chief Business Officer

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. , Aug. 21, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. (Nasdaq: BMRN) today announced the appointments of Greg Friberg, M.D., as Executive Vice President, Chief Research & Development Officer, succeeding Hank Fuchs, M.D., and James Sabry, M.D., Ph.D., as Executive Vice President, Chief Business Officer.

Dr. Friberg, who will join BioMarin effective Sept. 30, is a proven leader with nearly two decades of industry experience. He comes to BioMarin from Amgen, Inc., where he most recently served as Vice President, Global Medical Affairs, Rare Disease. Dr. Friberg brings a wealth of experience in clinical development and lifecycle management to the role. During his 18 years at Amgen, he has been responsible for advancing multiple medicines from investigational new drug application filing through late-stage development. In addition, he served as head of Global Development for the company's hematology/oncology and bone portfolios. At BioMarin, he will assume responsibility for the company's R&D organization, including discovery research, preclinical, translational and clinical programs, as well as global regulatory and medical affairs. Dr. Friberg holds an M.D. from New York Medical College. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and his fellowship in hematology and oncology at The University of Chicago Medical Center. Prior to Amgen, he served on the faculty of the University of Chicago.

Dr. Sabry, whose appointment is effective Oct. 7, is one of the biopharmaceutical industry's top business development executives, having led 1,200 transactions over his career. He joins BioMarin from Roche and Genentech, where he spent 14 years, serving most recently as Executive Vice President and Global Head of Roche Partnering. He brings decades of expertise in identifying innovation at all stages of development, from preclinical to commercialized products, focusing on novel targets and approaches to managing serious medical conditions. During his tenure at Roche and Genentech, Dr. Sabry identified, executed and managed transactions that bolstered the pipelines of both organizations. Earlier in his career, he was President and CEO of Arete Therapeutics, as well as Chairman of the Board of Directors, and served as CEO of Cytokinetics, a company he co-founded. Dr. Sabry holds an M.D. from Queen's University and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and he held faculty positions at UCSF and Harvard Medical School.

"We are pleased to welcome Greg and James to BioMarin. Greg is a world-class scientist and innovative thinker. He brings to the role deep experience in successfully advancing product candidates through the development process and to market. His proven record in drug development, outstanding leadership skills and expertise as a clinician make him the ideal person for this role," said Alexander Hardy, President and Chief Executive Officer. "James is recognized as one of the industry's most astute dealmakers. His scientific acumen and industry knowledge, built over decades as an entrepreneur and executive, are unparalleled. James will spend time getting to know the company and the role business development can play by identifying important and appropriately sized transactions that support our already strong outlook."

Dr. Fuchs is retiring after 15 years at BioMarin, during which he led the development of five new medicines for lysosomal storage disorders, phenylketonuria, achondroplasia and hemophilia A through clinical trials and on to the market. During his tenure, Dr. Fuchs has built an industry-leading R&D organization, with expertise leveraging a deep understanding of genetics to create breakthrough treatments. He has overseen the advancement of medicines that target the underlying cause of a disease with the goal of having a profound impact for patients. Dr. Fuchs will remain at BioMarin in an advisory capacity through March 3, 2025.

"On behalf of all of us at BioMarin, I'd like to offer my deepest thanks to Hank, who for a decade and a half has steered BioMarin's R&D organization with a great scientific mind and a big heart, building the organization into the leading scientific operation that it is today," said Mr. Hardy. "More than half of our marketed products were approved under Hank's leadership. He has had a profound impact not only on BioMarin, but on the lives of thousands of patients around the world."

"What has kept me here all these years is the incredible opportunity to bring transformative medicines to patients who are counting on us, and work with colleagues who share the same passion to make a difference in the lives of others," said Dr. Fuchs. "I am thrilled to hand the reins to Greg. With Greg and James in these scientific leadership positions, I believe BioMarin is set up to continue to deliver breakthroughs for people with serious medical conditions."

BioMarin also announced that Brinda Balakrishnan, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Corporate Strategy and Business Development Officer, has decided to leave the company, effective Oct. 1. During her more than eight years at BioMarin, Dr. Balakrishnan led deals that added nearly 20 assets to the company's portfolio and divested certain pipeline programs.

"I am proud to have played a role in setting BioMarin up for greater future success," said Dr. Balakrishnan. "I am grateful to have worked alongside colleagues who share my passion and urgency to deliver impactful medicines for patients."

"Brinda is a highly strategic thinker, who brought to BioMarin vision, creativity and expertise as a physician scientist," said Mr. Hardy. "Her scientific depth and understanding of the industry have been critical in ensuring that BioMarin is well-positioned for the future. We are grateful to Brinda for her many contributions to BioMarin – and to the patients we serve."
