  • Goofs In a scene supposedly set on the roof of a San Francisco office building, between William Hurt and Elizabeth Perkins, well=known Los Angeles high-rises can be seen in the background.

June Ellis : There was a farmer who had a lot of fields, and he kept all of the birds and creatures away from his crops with traps and fences. He was very successful... but he was very lonely. So, one day, he stood in the middle of his fields to welcome the animals. He stayed there from dawn to dusk, with his arms outstretched, calling to them. But, not a single animal came. Not a single creature appeared. They were terrified, you see, of the farmer's new Scarecrow... just let down your arms, and we'll all come to you.

Review/Film; William Hurt as Doctor Whose Spirit Heals When He Falls Ill

William Hurt has an exceptionally wide range on the confidence scale, an ability to move from utter self-assurance to quiet terror that such superiority might crumble. He shows this off to exceptionally good effect in "The Doctor," the story of a once-impervious physician who makes a critical 90-degree shift. Dr. Jack MacKee, a prominent heart surgeon, is first seen presiding over an operating room team with the brash, cowboy arrogance of a seasoned expert. The film follows the events that leave Jack lying helpless in the same setting, about to experience a taste of his own medicine.

"The Doctor," which greatly resembles the current "Regarding Henry" in its tale of a rich, cavalier professional who is made to face his own frailty, has a more realistic outlook and a more riveting figure in its central role. Mr. Hurt, making the most of his sleek good looks and stately bearing in the film's early scenes, presents Jack MacKee as a charming, cocksure doctor who specializes not only in difficult surgical procedures but also in careful, deceptively breezy intimidation.

Colleagues and patients alike are thrown off-balance by Jack's mixture of false casualness, crisp professionalism and cutting wit. The film makes it clear that Jack, having spent his entire career perfecting this bedside manner, has lost track of his inner thoughts, and learned to concentrate solely on getting the job done. "Caring's all about time," he tells someone, when discussing whether work like this ought to engage the emotions. "When you've got 30 seconds before some guy bleeds out, I'd rather cut more and care less."

"The Doctor," written by Robert Caswell (from a book by Ed Rosenbaum, M.D.) and directed by Randa Haines, opens with a quick succession of scenes that encapsulate Jack's professional life. He teases, jokes and plays rock-and-roll oldies in the operating room, setting a mood that is quickly broken when Ms. Haines offers a shot of the patient's battered face. He tells a patient who is dismayed by a new scar that she looks like a magazine centerfold, staples and all. He laughs with his wife, Anne (Christine Lahti), about an emergency call, which arrives via the car phone in his Mercedes. And he also finds after a party that he is coughing blood onto the shirt of his tuxedo.

At this, the supreme security of Mr. Hurt's beautifully precise characterization begins to fall apart. He is utterly nonplussed at the prospect of submitting to tests by a female doctor (Wendy Crewson) whose manner is every bit as briskly detached as his own. He blanches at this doctor's examination, and later rails at the hospital procedures that force him to cool his heels waiting for further treatment. He has, he finally complains to a hospital worker, been a surgeon here for 11 years. "Then you should know all about filling out forms," this worker drily replies.

"The Doctor," which is much more colorful than its weak title would suggest, takes a chillingly clinical view of the medical procedures to which Jack is subjected, once he has been found to have throat cancer. And the fear that Mr. Hurt registers in these hospital scenes is in its quiet way more affecting than the rest of the story. In addition to following the course of his sickness, the film watches Jack as he recognizes the error of his ways, re-examines his profession, owns up to the emptiness of his marriage and finds inspiration in the courage of a beautiful young woman who has a brain tumor (Elizabeth Perkins), and who suddenly becomes the only person to whom he truly feels close.

Someone on your Facebook page said this was great viewing for college classes. I assume medical classes and agree.

the doctor movie review

A dividing wall goes up between the patients and professionals. On one side is fear and hope, and on the other the overwhelming relentlessness of the job. I think I would find this movie very interesting.

I remember this one quite well, saw it only once, liked it quite a bit (Elizabeth Perkins I thought was really good), but anyway, the morning after seeing it I woke up with a sore throat. I thought - No way am I that suggestible, but what a weird coincidence. After 4 weeks finally went to see a doctor, turned out to be some infection that wouldn't leave, some antibiotics took care of it. The timing was pretty odd. This really has disappeared though as you say. Deserves to be better known.

This film has always stuck with me as well. It has a powerful message, and ought to be more well known. I loved William Hurt's and Elizabeth Perkins' performances.

This is a very thought-provoking film. It is interesting to experience something wearing a different hat from the one you are used to. I really liked William Hurt in this and “Accidental Tourist”.

An Uplifting Story About Finding New Meaning In Life.

Jack McKee is a doctor with it all: he's successful, he's rich, and he has no problems.... until he is diagnosed with throat cancer. Now that he has seen medicine, hospitals, and doctors from a patient's perspective, he realises that there is more to being a doctor than surgery and prescriptions.

Varghese

Review by Varghese ★★★★

Death or even contracting a fatal disease is a tricky subject to pull off in cinema. This film manages to do it beautifully without becoming overtly sentimental. Hurt,Lahti (brilliant as always) and Perkins are fantastic.

P.S - This must be the only film i have seen in which music is played out loudly and that too whilst an operation is in progress!

mattstechel

Review by mattstechel ★★½

While I liked it slightly more than the friends I watched this with, there's only so much slack I could cut it when as Lou adroitly pointed out in the comment chat--this is the rare movie where "He (William Hurt) starts out the movie as an asshole and honestly becomes an even bigger asshole after getting cancer!" I can't possibly top that, but it's true that Hurt goes from being the kinda doctor whom over the course of the movie goes from not really being able to see his patients as people to being overly empathic like Patch Adams and it's kinda ridiculous how he just swings from one extreme end of the spectrum to the other without ever really…

Effective portrait of a callous surgeon who gets a new perspective on his patients and his work when he is diagnosed with cancer and has to navigate the medical establishment from the other side. William Hurt’s performance as the titular doctor is understated but completely convincing, and the movie persuasively depicts the way that many doctors lack sufficient empathy for their patients. The small indignities that Hurt goes through as a patient are the best part of the movie, and they have the ring of truth, maybe because the screenplay was based on a memoir.

The weakest part of the movie is also the part that feels the most Hollywood: Hurt’s sudden friendship with a fellow cancer patient (a likable…

An early 1990s gem that offers a double perspective on North American health care, both the point of view of the practitioner and the patient, highlighting how professionalism often equals acting without emotional engagement, even in the most life-threatening situations. It's no small achievement to make the usually bland William Hurt shine. Given the uneven quality of the actor's catalogue of films it's tempting to give most of the credit to the director but obviously Hurt himself deserves some of it also for fully utilizing the available acting ability and successfully filling the titular doctor with a mix of arrogance and vulnerability. Although slightly overacted, a Hurt character has rarely been as interesting to watch. I'd like to see many more films made by Randa Haines.

Dr. Jack MacKee (William Hurt), a surgeon specializing in the heart and lungs, has had a tickle in his throat for months. Clearing it became a habit and Jack does not think anything of it until his coughs produce droplets of blood. He goes to see Dr. Abbott (Wendy Crewson) for a check-up but it is not good news. The diagnosis is laryngeal tumor and further tests are required to determine if it is benign or malignant. The table is turned: Jack, a brilliant doctor but has a poor bedside manner, is forced to experience how it is like to be treated like a specimen rather than a patient who might be feeling afraid, has questions, or in need of…

When a high profile doctor learns he has cancer he finds out what it’s really like to become a patient.

William Hurt is excellent in one of his best performances as the doctor who learns empathy and comes to see his patients as human beings rather than statistics. Elizabeth Perkins is also great as a friend (and maybe more) that Hurt meets during his time in the cancer ward.

Despite the somewhat Hollywood-ish third act, The Doctor is a film everyone can relate to and once again the kind of mid range studio movies Hollywood use to excel at.

Randa Haines’s drama. William Hurt plays a glib, egotistical doctor who’s forced to re-appraise his life when he’s diagnosed as suffering from cancer. With Elizabeth Perkins.

Loosely based on the memoir A Taste of My Own Medicine by Dr. Edward Rosenbaum, which was published three years earlier, the story concerns great surgeon Jack McKee (William Hurt) who is emotionally detached from his wife (Christine Lahti), his son (Charlie Korsmo) and the patients he operates on.

When Jack develops a life-threatening tumour, he sees life from a patient’s viewpoint.

He then encounters a bold, gravely unwell woman called June (Elizabeth Perkins) and starts to comprehend the requirement of showing compassion in the medical profession. Jack promises to treat his family and…

A fact-based story of a surgeon who learns the importance of compassion in a physician-patient relationship when he's treated for cancer.

This slick, well-constructed film, a fine sophomore effort by director Randa Haines (CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD), was loosely adapted by screenwriter Robert Caswell (A CRY IN THE DARK) from a book based on Dr. Edward E. Rosenbaum's 50-year experience as a medical practitioner. Jack McKee (William Hurt), an insufferably arrogant surgeon, gets a taste of his own medicine when he's suddenly diagnosed to have a malignant tumor and finds himself on the receiving end of a thermometer. In other words, he becomes a patient. Jack confronts his own mortality with an understandable sense of angst and vulnerability. He also quickly falls prey to the same thoughtless medical attitudes he has always unwittingly subscribed to. As a patient, he encounters a dispassionate, bungling hospital bureaucracy obsessed with minutiae, spends hours of needless waiting and incessant form-filling, and most disturbing, faces coldly patronizing colleagues whose general credo is cut straight, care less. Like the rest of us lesser mortals who have suffered all sorts of indignities dished out by Hippocratic oafs, Jack doesn't like it one bit. During the tedious waiting-room process, Jack befriends June (Elizabeth Perkins), a terminal cancer outpatient whose life could have been saved by a thousand-dollar test she was never given. (Hospital insurance precluded it.) Although their purely platonic interludes together occasionally border on the evangelical, she imparts to him an appreciation of life's fundamentals before she inevitably dies. This shattering experience causes Jack to reappraise himself personally and professionally. He repairs his eroding relationship with wife Anne (Christine Lahti), long a victim of his marital neglect. He heeds his newly discovered conscience by refusing to perjure himself at an upcoming malpractice trial for smarmy Murray (Mandy Patinkin), a member of his highly successful four-man surgical group practice, who is not above cheating--on his wife or in court. McKee also gains new-found respect for ear-nose-and-throat specialist Eli (Adam Arkin), nicknamed The Rabbi, who has been consistently maligned by the Gang of Four because of his unique sensibilities: he really cares about his patients. Jack's own conversion from clinically detached healer and husband into humane individual proves complete when he orders his young surgical residents to spend three days as patients to experience the same indignities they have cavalierly, thoughtlessly inflicted on others. In content, THE DOCTOR is the flip side of Paddy Chayefsky's THE HOSPITAL, a spirited satire on the incompetence within a major medical center and a black comedy which showed, short of murder, how easy it is to "lose" patients in the daily course of slipshod care. THE DOCTOR doesn't quite have that same hard edge or gallows humor because, in between the life and death surgical procedures, the film, after all, glorifies life. It's filled with a perverse but engaging humor--almost a stateside M*A*S*H--as it pokes fun at typical medical phenomena--from randy, raucous jokes in the operating room as blood spurts in all directions, to unflattering hospital gowns that leave little to the imagination, to barium enemas meant for someone else. Unfortunately, many of those same lax procedures and attitudes depicted still persist, but the film's upbeat ending leaves some hope for better "people handling" in the future from those in health care. Though vaguely simplistic and unlayered, THE DOCTOR's linear plot teems with adult, often pungent dialogue delivered by real pros--particularly Hurt, a master of nuance, and Lahti (SWINGSHIFT, HOUSEKEEPING), a superb, underrated actress, who, though not given much to work with, manages to delicately convey a strong sense of desolation. Though beautifully acted by Perkins, June's relationship with Jack is one of the film's only false notes. Arkin, as Eli, gives a short, sweet and absolutely convincing portrayal. THE DOCTOR is a welcome change from the usual Hollywood pap, and considering its rational thesis, should well be made mandatory for all med students and surgical residents who might think their job begins and ends on a hospital's cutting room floor.

Film Review by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat

Here is a film that portrays what happens to one member of the medical establishment when he faces problems normally confronted only by patients. William Hurt plays Jack, a cool, self-centered surgeon who is in total control of his successful life until he is diagnosed as having cancer of the throat. Then he finds himself subject to the negligence, indifference, bureaucratic regulations, and humiliations which many have experienced in hospitals. Ignoring his wife, Jack seeks moral support from a woman dying of a brain tumor. Elizabeth Perkins portrays this character as a healer who restores Jack to life — and to a new vision of what it means to be a doctor. The film, directed by Randa Haines, gives us a fresh appreciation of the dynamic interplay between mind, body, and soul in the art of healing.

(LL) 25 obscenities & a few profanities

More Detail:

Medicine and the Golden Rule come together in THE DOCTOR, a film about a 40-year-old heart surgeon who rethinks his policy about emotional detachment when plagued with cancer of the larynx, forcing him to live the doctor/patient relationship from the other side of the hospital bed.

The story begins in the operation room as Jack and his colleague, Murray, rescue a man who attempted suicide. Raucous music blares in the operating room as the doctors joke to relieve some of the tension. With only seconds left to save the man’s life, Jack successfully completes the operation. To celebrate, the practitioners sing “Why don’t we get drunk and f—!” as they dance about the room.

During his rounds, Jack counsels the medical interns not to become emotionally involved with their patients. His medical philosophy allows him to treat any condition with stoic detachment.

Suffering from a sore throat and nagging cough, Jack visits an ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr. Leslie Abbott. Clinically cold in her approach to Jack, Dr. Abbott enables Jack to realize how a patient must feel when treated with indifference.

When Dr. Abbott finds a tumor on Jack’s vocal chords, she schedules him for a biopsy. Now forced to rely on another’s expertise, Jack experiences all the horrors of dealing with doctors and large medical institutions. Ultimately, Jack’s tumor is malignant, and he and his wife deal with the ordeal of cancer.

In chemotherapy, Jack meets June, another patient with an inoperable brain tumor. By sharing her struggle, Jack learns to love life and treat others with sensitivity and respect. At first, he is not receptive to June’s story that her condition was worsened by misdiagnosis, albeit true. Professionally, Jack is more concerned with protecting the brotherhood of doctors.

Gradually, Jack becomes deeply affected by June’s ability to endure her fatal condition. Jack asks her if she prays. She does pray, meditate, dance, and eat chocolate. Through his involvement with June, Jack sorrowfully realizes that his medical practice was built upon a wrong premise.

Biblically, THE DOCTOR resounds with the truth of Luke 6:31: “Just as you want men to do to you, you also must do to them likewise.” The film also depicts tenderness, especially with Jack’s inner struggle and the ordeal of tumor surgery.

Some elements of THE DOCTOR aren’t totally believable, however, such as Jack’s complete transformation from indifference to sensitivity. Also, the emotional basis for Jack’s relationship with June is not clearly defined, nor is his commitment to his wife. In addition, a subplot about a malpractice case against Murray unnecessarily complicates the film. Furthermore, the few profanities and obscenities soil the positive moral messages.

THE DOCTOR could have been a great movie with an exemplary message. Regrettably, the script doesn’t do the story justice, but it still has much to offer an audience.

‘Doctor’ movie review: An enjoyable comedy-caper that has Sivakarthikeyan playing down his strengths

Director nelson’s writing is top-notch, as are the performances by the ensemble cast, in this roller-coaster of a watch.

October 09, 2021 02:28 pm | Updated 02:33 pm IST

Srinivasa Ramanujam

Sivakarthikeyan in ‘Doctor’

Let me make a confession first: I had great fun watching the BTS videos that the team of Doctor put up. One of them has director Nelson waiting desperately outside composer Anirudh’s studio for a song. The composer strolls out, phone in hand, “ Ippo lam directors studio vella padhuturanga (These days, directors have started sleeping outside the studio) . They don’t understand that music composing is a creative process. ”

Also Read | Get ‘First Day First Show’, our weekly newsletter from the world of cinema, in your inbox . You can subscribe for free here

There’s another funny interaction between the director and hero Sivakarthikeyan, where the former pulls the star’s leg about the Kalaimamani award he bagged recently.

Most of these videos are delivered seriously, but are packed with humour and witty repartees. Nelson continues that irreverence on the big screen in Doctor .

With his earlier film Kolamavu Kokila , the filmmaker proved that he could captivate audiences with the story of an ordinary family doing extraordinary things. He repeats the same trope in this outing, and the result: an intriguing tale of a family going to great lengths, to save a loved one.

Read More | Sivakarthikeyan on ‘Doctor’, the lessons he learnt from ‘Hero’ and why Siva 2.0 is just starting

That’s the gist, but the film begins with Varun (Sivakarthikeyan), a doctor with a stickler for discipline. He’s also practical about life, which is why the girl he likes (Priyanka Arul Mohan, who doesn’t have much to do) doesn’t reciprocate his feelings; she wishes for someone with more emotions, more heart.

In a while, she’ll see all that; when a child from their family is kidnapped, Varun jumps into action. Will he triumph?

  • Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Vinay, Priyanka Arul Mohan, Yogi Babu
  • Director: Nelson
  • Storyline: A doctor urges a family who has lost a loved one to take things in their own hands

The biggest USP of the film is that it isn’t about Doctor himself; Sivakarthikeyan, in this case. In fact, this is probably his most understated role so far. It literally robs him of his cheery and boisterous self, a quality that has endeared him to the family audiences. In Doctor , he’s like a Rishabh Pant staying quiet on the crease (Pant is known for his aggressive style of batting). Even his dialogue delivery is staccato-like. You could have placed Chitti from Endhiran here, and it wouldn’t have made too much a difference.

However, much like the Professor from popular series Money Heist , Sivakarthikeyan stays in the background while trying to galvanise a family to do something that is normally the police department’s job. The family is filled with memorable characters, and so are the people they meet in the roller-coaster process of saving their loved one.

The first half crackles with humour, with comedy actor Kingsley having us in splits with his brash dialogue delivery. Nelson packs a lot of comedy in the scenes, so much so that even action sequences have a dose of humour (check out the one shot inside a Metro train compartment). Though he loses the plot to an extent in the second half, the interesting set of characters he has designed and their performances keep you invested till the end.

Much like many Tamil films in recent times, Doctor too highlights a cause, that of human trafficking. Statistics and dialogues proving the cause are but a line or two… that’s such a relief. Also refreshing is watching Unnale Unnale Vinay play a character with shades of grey; it isn’t much to write home about, but boy, Vinay does still look fit and fine. Anirudh’s music and background score are major highlights of Doctor ; the use of a Carnatic melodic phrase (‘The Soul of Doctor’ track) to a slow-motion fight sequence surprisingly fits, as does the foot-tapping ‘Chellamma’ song. The cinematography — by Vijay Karthik Kannan — also gives us some greatly-lit frames. All these are richly packed in the 148-minute roller-coaster comedy that Doctor is. All these augur well for Beast , director Nelson’s next biggie with Vijay.

Doctor is currently running in theatres

Doctor movie review: Sivakarthikeyan’s film is a deliciously wicked dark comedy

Doctor movie review: sivakarthikeyan's new film is unlike any you've seen him in before. with dark humour, nelson adds spice to a mundane script..

Doctor Director: Nelson Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Priyanka Arul Mohan, Vinay, Yogi Babu and Archana Chandokhe

Doctor movie review: Sivakarthikeyan embraces a dark role.

The first thing that comes to mind when you walk out of Nelson’s Doctor is it’s unlike anything you’ve seen from a Sivakarthikeyan’s movie so far. Taking a refreshing departure from the colourful entertainers he’s popular for; Sivakarthikeyan embraces a dark role-– of an army doctor who goes after a human trafficking gang--with minimal dialogues. Nelson whips up a deliciously wicked dark comedy that works despite its predictable plot and twists. Even the most mundane scenes are elevated thanks to the quirky treatment.

Watch Doctor trailer here:

The plot is simple and familiar. Early on, Varun (Sivakarthikeyan) gets a call from his fiancée Padmini (Priyanka), who decides to call off their wedding after realising that he is not hip enough. When Varun and his folks come home to find out the exact reason behind the rejection, they’re told that he’s not caring and emotional. As the wedding is called off, news comes in that Padmini’s niece has gone missing from her school and the family suspects a case of kidnapping. Varun comes forward to help them and he decides to take the law in his own hands when he realises the police are not too serious about the case. Will Varun succeed in saving girl by taking a human trafficking gang head on, forms the crux of the story?

Doctor takes off slowly and initially it feels a little odd to see Sivakarthikeyan deliver his lines like a robot. It feels like a very mechanical performance but once you get used to his character, the film works like a charm. No other Tamil film apart from Nelson’s own Kolamavu Kokila used dark comedy so effectively in recent years.

Also read: Bhramam movie review: Prithviraj Sukumaran's pointless Andhadhun remake will blindside you with blandness

Nelson manages to evoke laughs out of the most serious situations and he pulls it off so effortlessly. Most scenes would’ve felt flat if they were not treated the way Nelson did with the aid of dark humour. There’s a terrific action sequence inside a metro train and it’s one of the best sequences in the first half. It’s inventive and extremely wacky. Not sure if this sequence would’ve worked in any other film.

Despite a slightly predictable second half, Doctor stays afloat because of the way it uses humour to make every cliched sequence feel fresh. Yogi Babu, who usually gets a tiny comic roles in movies, gets an extended screen time here and he’s terrific in his portion. With impeccable timing and deadpan expression, he keeps the film alive in some of its more boring stretches. MTV Roadies fame Rajiv and Raghu Ram play key characters and they make for interesting casting choices. Vinay shines yet again as the sophisticated villain. Anirudh Ravichander’s music and score holds the film together whenever it dips.

Paramount+ is about to get the sequel to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining . Doctor Sleep , a 2019 movie written and directed by Mike Flanagan, is set to arrive on the streaming service next month.

Beginning Sept. 1, Stephen King fans will be able to stream Doctor Sleep on Paramount+. Based on the 2013 novel of the same name, Doctor Sleep stars Ewan McGregor as Dan Torrance, a man with psychic abilities and a drinking problem, who struggles with childhood trauma caused by the horrors at the Overlook Hotel. Dan was previously played as a child in The Shining by Danny Lloyd, who makes a cameo in Doctor Sleep as a spectator at a baseball game. Although Doctor Sleep wasn't a major box office hit, the movie did receive positive reviews from critics, who praised McGregor's performance and Flanagan's direction and screenplay.

Salem's Lot: First Look Revealed at Upcoming Stephen King Reboot

Alongside multiple first look images, the upcoming Stephen King movie, Salem's Lot, has finally received a release window on Max.

Mike Flanagan Has Become Hollywood's Go-to Horror Director

Doctor Sleep was the second King adaptation written and directed by Flanagan after Gerald's Game (2017). The filmmaker, who has made a career out of creating, writing, and directing spooky films and series, has at least two further King adaptations coming out over the next couple of years. The first, The Life of Chuck , is currently in post-production and based on the novella that was published in the 2020 collection If It Bleeds . Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Matthew Lillard, and Jacob Tremblay are part of the ensemble for the movie, which will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.

Flanagan also owns the television rights to King's fantasy novel series, The Dark Tower , and plans on turning it into a multi-season show. After Flanagan signed on to direct the next Exorcist movie , some fans were concerned that it meant that The Dark Tower was no longer happening. Luckily, the filmmaker confirmed shortly after that The Exorcist sequel will not impact the development of The Dark Tower . "Oh, it's not in the way. They coexist very well. I think the trick with The Dark Tower is just it still just takes an enormous amount of time to get going," Flanagan explained in July 2024.

Hollywood Won't Stop Adapting the Works of Stephen King

Flanagan isn't the only filmmaker in Hollywood making Stephen King adaptations. Besides The Life of Chuck and The Dark Tower , there are several more King adaptations currently in development, including Edgar Wright's The Running Man starring Glen Powell. Lionsgate is in production on a feature-length adaptation of King's dystopian horror novel, The Long Walk , while MGM+ is adapting the author's 2019 novel, The Institute , as an eight-episode limited series starring Ben Barnes. Warner Bros. Discovery also has a remake of Salem's Lot set to debut on Max this October and the IT prequel series Welcome to Derry set for a 2025 premiere on HBO.

The Doctor Movie Review

The doctor movie is one of the best movies that talks about a surgeon doctor who faces problems of confrontation with his patients. Dr.Jack Mackee he is known for his cool attribute by his co-workers who believe in him as being very successful in his career life in the movie context. Jack has a wife and son who depend on him as a breadwinner in the family until he starts to notice some unbearable coughing and huffs that become serious to the extent of even coughing blood then later he realizes he has throat cancer. Jack, then he finds himself in the state of negligence, humiliations, indifference and strict regulations that many patients go through while in the hospitals (The Doctor, 1991).

The throat cancer disease causes some family issues when the doctor decides to abandon his family and instead spend most of his time enquiring advice from the woman with the brain tumor (June Ellis) who is recognized as the healer of Jack (The Doctor, 1991). Through his engagement with June, the jack can know the meaning of being a leader through his career since everyone trusts him as a doctor with their life. Through the watch of this movie a person can tell the various examples and non-examples of servant leadership in the society and more so in our case Doctor is the subject. Using the doctor movie to teach about leadership to students it offers a lot of benefits in the learning process in that movies have enormous impacts on students’ perspectives in life on how to handle some matters in life.

Jack portrays an excellent image by accepting the treatments and also being open to June who’s undergoing the fourth stage of brain cancer in her life. The character of making the patients know that whatever the treatments they go through shows that their doctors care much for them and that’s why they should earn their trust when it comes to treatment of serious diseases. The doctor took so long to notice cancer since the insurance company had known the expense of that disease because the use of MRI treats it (The Doctor, 1991). The ignorance and neglecting of the doctor’s situation by the insurance cover is a character of lousy servant leadership since a leader is someone who cares and serves his people fairly and with all it takes. During the stay at the hospital, Jack notices some offending behaviors among his fellow doctors that don’t recognize patients as human beings by calling them the horrible nickname like “terminal.”

Jack shows a character of not being honest by not opening up to his wife about the health condition he is going through, and this is a sign of non-example of servant leadership qualities. Jack is very far from flawless; this character is shown by jack when he opens up to the June who is suffering from brain tumor they talk and bond and even take a mystical trip to the desert. The caring of jack gives it away for June to prove to him that life is worth living and as a leader; it is their priority to make sure that safety and protection of health come first (The Doctor, 1991). In this film, we can gladly say that the doctor portrays an inquisitive fear and yearning to some imagined scenes; showing the end and how one has gone through a particular journey of discovering emotions. Lastly, the movies try to elaborate on the right or evil acts of the doctor that relates to examples of serving as a leader in the hospital or society.

The Doctor. Performed by William Hurt, Mandy Patinkin, Elizabeth Perkins, Christine Lahti. U.S.A.: Buena Vista Pictures, 1991. Film

The Protégé

the doctor movie review

Maggie Q and Michael Keaton have such snappy, sexy chemistry with each other in “The Protégé,” it’ll make you wish their connection were in the service of a better movie. Instead, they bounce off each other—often quite literally—in this capable but ultimately forgettable late-summer action-thriller.

The film from veteran director Martin Campbell , whose journeyman pedigree includes a couple of Bonds (“GoldenEye,” “Casino Royale”) a couple of Zorros and that “ Green Lantern ” adaptation Ryan Reynolds makes fun of himself for starring in, offers some solid fight scenes, a few gnarly kills, and breathless pacing. “The Protégé” is slick and glib and constantly on the go from city to city and genre to genre. It’s also a mismatched buddy comedy and a doomed romance. But what it’s about—seeking revenge for the revenge killing of a 30-year-old assassination—isn’t as intriguing as who it’s about, and that’s Maggie Q’s character.

Anna is a highly trained contract killer who’s cool and efficient. She also has impeccable taste in clothes, food and literature—the rare bookstore she runs in London is both an innocent front and her true passion —and she’s quick with a quip regardless of the situation. An opening flashback to 1991 shows us where she came from: Da Nang, Vietnam, where she was cowering in a closet, carrying a gun and surrounded by dead bodies when Samuel L. Jackson ’s swaggering assassin Moody found her and forged her into the killing machine she is today. (Jackson, of course, can play this kind of foul-mouthed and irreverent character in his sleep.) But a reckoning for a decades-old death forces Anna to confront both her traumatic childhood and her cultural roots. At least, it’s suggested that’s what’s supposed to happen here; “The Protégé” never digs too deep en route to its abrupt ending.

When bad guys come after Moody, she must go after them. Along the way, she gets tangled up with Keaton’s Michael Rembrandt, a ruthless fixer for a billionaire criminal who projects himself as a global humanitarian. From the first moment she meets him, pretending to be a customer in her bookstore and effortlessly quoting Poe as a form of flirtation, the two share a banter that’s so light and zippy, it feels like it fluttered in from a totally different movie. Their dialogue improves the mood significantly, but it also seems out of place within this violent, bloody setting. We can tell he cares about her because he tells his beefy underlings to go easy on the waterboarding once they’ve captured her, albeit briefly. And listening to the two purring at each other over drinks about the distinct sounds different handguns make does clang a little.

Still, Campbell and editor Angela Catanzaro were wise to let the fight scenes between these two play out so we can actually see the choreography, see the work they’ve put into these roles. Keaton is nearly 70 years old going toe-to-toe—and seemingly holding his own—with the bad-ass goddess that is Maggie Q. And of course, Keaton brings inspired menace to the role as well as a twinkle in the eye with his playful delivery.

But “The Protégé” is primarily an action picture, even as it offers lip service about atoning for sins of the past. The script from writer Richard Wenk , whose muscular oeuvre includes the Denzel Washington “Equalizer” movies, a “Jack Reacher” and an “Expendables,” revisits the horrors Anna witnessed in the past but seems more interested in the perils she can escape in the present. This is the kind of movie in which a security team full of generic thugs in matching leather jackets and buzz cuts can fire a million rounds at her and not hit her once, but she can fire exactly two bullets and take down both guys who are chasing her. And when she grabs onto a firehose to leap through an atrium, it’s just the right length to set her down safely in the lobby.

There’s never much doubt that Anna will outsmart and outlast whoever dares to come for her, from Bucharest to London and back to Da Nang again, so there’s not much in the way of suspense. She’s the placid and unflappable center of this glossy version of a B-revenge thriller. Merely the first few notes of the overplayed “Feeling Good” as she begins her day with a jog signal her invincibility. While that sounds like nitpicking, it’s the kind of safe and superficial choice typical of a movie that isn’t interested in even starting to explore how this woman feels about all the death she’s left in her wake, or what kind of life she may actually want for herself.

Now playing in theaters.
