How to Make Discord Reactive Images

Reactive images let people's avatars light up when they're talking on stream. You don't have to be a VTuber to make your own – I'll show you how.

If you watch streamers chat in groups on Twitch or other platforms, they’re probably using a Discord call. With the right know-how, you can use simple Discord voice or video to show people’s avatars when they speak, or even use VTuber-style characters to make the call more lively.

When speakers’ icons light up, change, or move while they speak, streamers are using a feature called “reactive images," and you don't need to be a real VTuber to use them yourself. I’ll show you how to set up Discord Reactive Images in just a few minutes using Discord, OBS, and a free online image editor called Kapwing.

How to Make Discord Reactive Images:

• Create 1 or 2 PNG images
• Add images to the Discord Reactive Images tool
• Create a browser input in OBS
• Chat & stream!

Step 1: Create 1 or 2 PNG Images

By default, you can use your circular Discord PFP as your Reactive Image avatar, but these tend to have very low resolution (128x128 pixels, usually), are solid circles, and will only light up when you speak. Instead, I recommend using an avatar maker and Kapwing to create 1 or 2 new PNG images to create your reactive image.

For reactive images, people tend to use VTuber-style avatars or transparent versions of their Twitch profile pictures or Discord PFPs. To make a VR-style avatar, I recommend using an online app like ReadyPlayerMe or an external software like VRoid Studio , which you can download for free on the gaming platform Steam.

Another effective reactive image for streams is a transparent version of whatever profile picture will be most recognizable to your viewers. On Twitch streams, for example, you should probably use a PNG version of your Twitch profile picture , rather than your Discord PFP .

Upload the picture you want to start with to the Studio and select the Erase tool on the right. Here, you can remove plain backgrounds with a single click of the Magic Wand tool, or precisely cut out your avatar with the Erase tool. When you’ve created the transparent image you want to display when you’re not speaking, click Export Image , then Download to save the file.

You may also want to make another version of your photo with small edits so it changes more than just its brightness when you speak on stream. Use the “ Make a Copy ” button after exporting the original to add a colored border , laser eyes, sunglasses, quote bubble, or any overlay to add more flair to your icon when you’re speaking.

Step 2: Add Images to the Discord Reactive Images Tool

The hard part is over now – everything else is simple. I recommend using Fugiman's online Reactive Images tool to integrate your Discord reactive images into your streaming software (in this case, OBS). Log in using Discord and upload both pictures you created with Kapwing – if you made just one, upload it to both the Inactive and Speaking options. Click Save for each image.

On the right, look over your options: you can add a small (10px) bounce effect to your reactive image whenever you start speaking, choose whether to include your own reactive image when streaming a whole group, and adjust the spacing between the profile images in the channel or call. Now, copy either the group link to bring everyone’s avatars and reactive images into your stream, or the individual link to show only your own.

Step 3: Create a Browser Input in OBS

Now you’ll want to integrate your Discord reactive images with your streaming software. I’m using OBS, since it’s the most popular program out there, but the process is essentially the same in other softwares. Open OBS on your computer and add an input in the lower left. Choose “ Browser Input ” and add a name for your new source.

Now, paste the individual or group reactive image link you copied in the Browser Input Properties window. Once this source is visible, you can move it around your streaming window and resize it until it looks the way you want.

Step 4: Chat & Stream!

For the Discord reactive image tool to work with OBS, you need to keep it open in a browser tab, and your Discord app needs to be running with your voice channel or call. As long as all these are actively running, you can finish setting up your stream and share your conversation with any audience.

Labour won’t get away with clobbering taxpayers for long

It may only be a couple of years before Rachel Reeves’s plans backfire, as capital and talent flee her punitive new regime

Rachel Reeves is apparently set to announce that there is a £20 billion “black hole” in the nation’s finances, presumably in due course to be addressed by tax rises. It is a fairly classic manoeuvre of incoming governments to say something along the lines of “We knew it was bad, but it wasn’t until we got a proper look at the books that we realised how bad.” Many are criticising Labour this time, saying that there weren’t any “books” to look at, because the government’s finances are now more transparent than in the past so there shouldn’t be any “surprises” for an incoming government to discover.

Even in its own terms this isn’t quite right. The “transparent” assessments include analysis and forecasts by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) based on growth forecasts and on frequently updated information on how the economy’s performance converts into the tax take (which depends on exactly how much goes on wages, affecting income tax, purchases of goods and services, affecting VAT, business profits, affecting corporation tax, and so on). The OBR’s view of how things were has deteriorated a bit since the election (not because of anything to do with the result), implying about a £3 billion issue with the finances.

Much of what Reeves is set to talk about isn’t this, however. She is likely to focus on allowances for public sector pay rises along with, probably, some discussion of maintenance and investment backlogs where the incoming government’s judgement is a bit different from the Conservatives, some difference of view about the use of reserves in the spending pot, and claims that things the Tories announced as pre-election ambitions and Labour matched weren’t fully reflected in the previous numbers.

There may be some element of legerdemain in all of this, but there was a pretty solid view among economists, pre-Election, that neither major party was really being straight about the scale of tax rises or spending cuts that were coming, whoever won.

It’s also worth remembering that all this talk of “black holes” is with reference to largely meaningless “fiscal targets” relating to whether government debt is falling or rising several years ahead. Those targets don’t really bind the government’s tax-and-spend decisions at all. They’re just cosmetic.

The more pertinent point is that taxes were already scheduled, by the Tories, to rise to their highest level since the 1940s. That reflected the massive spending rises there were over the last Parliament – not only the huge short-term expenditure on Covid and on the energy crisis packages, but more fundamentally on a big (and chosen) structural rise in spending.

Labour was never politically likely to cut back on any of that – at least not unless forced to do so by some desperate fiscal crisis. The politically smart play was always for Labour to come in, declare things were even worse than they feared, and try to get the most painful measures out of the way near the start of the Parliament.

That presumably means tax rises – rather a lot of them – on top of the huge tax rises that the Tories had scheduled. It might seem doubtful whether the economy can really generate a tax-to-GDP ratio materially higher than that we have now, let alone much higher levels. The UK attracts a disproportionate amount of internationally mobile wealth and income – both in the form of foreign investment funds and in the form of high-income workers (for instance in finance, the legal profession and business services). Under normal circumstances one would expect that if that mobile wealth and income were taxed much more than it is already being taxed, then it would leave the UK to go elsewhere.

But just at the present, that may not happen, because international political volatility may mean that the UK seems like a safe haven even despite incoming large tax rises. Political turmoil in France and the US, along with uncertainty in various other parts of Europe, and tensions in the Middle East and East Asia might mean those workers and investors feel they have nowhere else to go for now.

So perhaps Reeves could get away with raising taxes on them even further – for a time. But that could change very rapidly. Labour might find that it can raise taxes in the next couple of years without having huge effects, but then suddenly the capital and the high-income workers leave in two or three years’ time. We shall see.

For now, however, it’s going to be time for us all to tighten our belts.
