Fifth former 'highly commended' in OxBright Essay Competition
A fifth former has been highly commended for his essay in the OxBright Essay Competition.
Matthew W (SH) entered the competition by writing an essay answering the question “How can long-term thinking in the field of Law foster optimism about the future?”.
The OxBright Essay Competition offers pupils a chance to think deeply about a topic beyond the school curriculum and widen their academic horizons.
Matthew said:”I am deeply honoured to have been highly commended in the law section of the OxBright Essay Competition where the prompt given was "How can long-term thinking in the field of law foster optimism about the future?".
“To formulate a topic to answer this broad question, I was particularly guided by Lord Bingham's inspiring book, The Rule of Law, where he emphasised the importance of the accessibility, predictability and intelligibility of the law to ensure the maintenance of the rule of law, a fundamental principle of society and order. Hence, I chose to focus my answer on the topic of linguistically decolonising legal systems inclusive and culturally relevant jurisprudence in the modern era and adapting the law to the heritage of different jurisdictions, thus ensuring that the rule of law can be fully advanced in the long-term.
“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to participate in the OxBright Essay Competition and to have my work highly commended.”
The panel of judges were very impressed with Matthew’s essay, nominating it as Highly Commended and ranking it within the top 20% of a competitive field of over 1000 entries. Matthew received a Certificate of Achievement and has won a free place at an OxBright academic conference.
Congratulations Matthew!

Congratulations to Year 12 student, Jenin, who has been shortlisted for the OxBright Essay Competition. She has been invited to an award ceremony on Saturday 28 October where the winner of the essay competition will be announced.
Westminster City School caught up with Jenin about the essay competition. She commented saying:
"My essay focused on the implications of war violence on human rights and how Humanitarian Law is the way to solve this. I am really passionate about this topic and saw this competition as the perfect opportunity for me to speak out and raise awareness.
"The reason for this is due to the fact that, in my opinion, there are limited resources on the internet regarding Humanities and even International Humanitarian Law and I feel that this is something which has been overlooked in the media.
"After completing my A Levels at Westminster City School's Sixth Form, my plan is to pursue my passion, study International Humanitarian Law at Cambridge University, to become an International Humanitarian Lawyer in the Middle East. I have chosen this particular area because I feel as though the culture of denialism is more prominent there than anywhere else in the world, when it comes to warfare."
Jenin is currently studying A Level Politics, History and English Literature at Westminster City School's Sixth Form.
Update as of Thursday 21 December 2023:
Congratulations to Year 12 student, Jenin, who came in the top 6 for the Foundation Essay Competition. Not only will Jenin's essay be published in a book, but she will also receive a book voucher as well as a celebratory dinner. The title of the essay is 'How Warfare Diminishes A Woman's Place In Society: The Comprehensive Analysis' which can be viewed here .
