The final step is printing your dissertation, which means choosing between:

Binding keeps the pages of your dissertation together, and comes in a variety of price points. Spiral binding is cheaper, a hardcover book binding is much pricier.

The type of binding you choose can depend on:

• Guidelines from your university or department
• The version (draft vs. final)
• The type of work you’re submitting ( PhD vs. master’s thesis vs. undergraduate thesis )

Spiral binding (± $7)

• Professional appearance
• Opens flat, so browsing through the pages is easy
• Fairly inexpensive

Comb binding (± $5)

• Pages are easy to browse
• Binding can be opened and closed
• Can be cheap-looking

Fastback binding (± $8)

• Professional, book-like appearance
• Available in different colors
• Individual sheets can come loose with time

Paperback binding ($10–20)

This type of binding makes your dissertation more durable and professional. In most cases, it’s possible to add front and spine lettering.

Color vs. Black & White

Check your university’s guidelines to see if there is guidance about whether to print your dissertation in color or black & white. Note that printing in color is on average two to four times more expensive.

In general, a color-printed dissertation looks more professional, but it is often not required.

Printing double-sided is often cheaper than printing single-sided, due to the paper savings — it makes your dissertation half as thick. However, some universities require you to print your dissertation single-sided. Be sure to check the guidelines.

When printing your dissertation double-sided, pay attention to the following points:

• New chapters should start on the front side of the paper. You will need to take this into account and insert “blank pages” when preparing to print.
• Add a blank page after the title page so that the acknowledgments and abstract are not printed on the back of your title page.
• The page numbering is often placed in the bottom right on the right side of the page and bottom left on the left side. You can easily set this in Word by choosing “outside alignment”.
• Check your style guide to make sure there aren’t any rules for printing.

Paper weight

The thickness of the paper (measured in gsm or grams) is something most students don’t think about, but it does have a significant impact on the look and feel of your printed thesis or dissertation.

Standard printing paper has a weight of 75–90 gsm. For a bachelor’s or master’s dissertation, this is likely fine. If you want the paper to look and feel more professional and durable, a paper weight of 100–130 gsm is better. This is often used for PhD dissertations.

Number of copies

It is common to print three to five copies of your dissertation. Depending on your university’s guidelines, you might need to submit one to three copies to your supervisor and department. In addition, you might want to have a copy for yourself or your family.

The production time for printing and binding takes on average two days, and delivery takes at least another day. For an additional charge (ranging from +20 to +80%), the production and delivery time can be shortened.

Have a looming deadline? Your local print shop is likely able to print and bind your dissertation faster, and it eliminates delivery time. However, keep in mind that this is often a little more expensive.

Before sending your dissertation to a print shop, there are three things you should do:

• Save your file as a PDF By saving your file as a PDF, the formatting will be consistent on every computer. This way you prevent any unpleasant surprises, such as offset pages, when receiving your printed product.
• Check for language mistakes There’s nothing worse than finding a language mistake in your printed version. Make sure to proofread your dissertation or make use of a professional proofreading service .
• Update the contents page Before saving your dissertation as a PDF, don’t forget to update the table of contents and cross-check the page numbers listed there with the actual page numbers.

Dissertation Binding and Printing Options | Comparison and Tips

Your dissertation is finally finished, you got it proofread and checked for plagiarism . The final step is printing your dissertation, which means choosing between:

• Types of binding
• Colour vs. black & white

Single vs. double sided

• Paper type and thickness

You also need to decide which printing and binding service to use. This independent article explains all options and helps you make the right decisions.

Aside from keeping the pages of your dissertation together, the binding is also responsible for your supervisor’s first impression of your dissertation. There are various types of binding, ranging from the cheaper spiral binding to the more expensive hardcover book binding .

The type of binding should depend on:

• Guidelines from your university or professor
• Your dissertation’s version (draft vs. final)
• Type of dissertation (PhD vs. undergraduate dissertation)

Spiral binding (± £7)

• Professional appearance
• Browsing through the pages is easy (can be opened flat)
• Fairly cheap

Comb binding (± £5)

• Enables easy browsing of the pages
• Binding can be opened and closed (not easily)
• Has a cheap appearance

Fastback binding (± £8)

• Professional book-like appearance
• Available in different colours
• Risk of pages falling out after a while

Paperback binding (£10-20)

• Durable and professional
• Book-like appearance
• Opening and browsing is less smooth than with spiral or comb binding

Hardback binding (£20-40)

• Customizable cover
• Quality comes at a price

Colour vs. Black & White

Unless specifically stated in your university guidelines, it is up to you to decide whether to print your dissertation in colour or black & white. Printing in colour is on average two to four times more expensive.

In general, a colour-printed dissertation looks more professional, but it is not required. Does your dissertation contain graphs or figures that rely on colour? Be sure to print at least these pages in colour.

Printing double sided is often cheaper than printing single sided due to the paper savings – it makes your dissertation half as thick. However, some universities require you to print your dissertation single sided. Be sure to check the guidelines.

When printing your dissertation double sided, pay attention to the following points:

• New chapters should start on the right side. You will need to take this into account and insert “blank pages” when preparing your dissertation.
• Add a blank page after the title page so that the acknowledgements or abstract are not printed on the back of your title page.
• The page numbering is often placed bottom right on the right side of the page and bottom left on the left side. You can easily set this in Word by choosing “outside alignment”.

Paper weight

The thickness of the paper (measured in gsm or grams) is something most students don’t think about, but it does have a significant impact on the look and feel of your dissertation.

Standard printing paper has a weight of 75-90 gsm. For a bachelor’s or master’s dissertation this is fine. If you want the paper to look and feel more professional and durable, a paper weight of 100-130 gsm is better. This is often used for PhD dissertations.

Number of copies

It is common to print three to five copies of your dissertation. Depending on your university’s guidelines you might need to submit one to three copies to your supervisor. In addition, you might want to have a copy for yourself or your family.

The production (printing and binding) takes on average two days, and delivery takes another day. For an additional charge (ranging from +20 to +80%), the production and delivery time can be shortened.

Have a looming deadline? Your local printing shop is probably able to print and bind your dissertation faster, and it eliminates delivery time. However, keep in mind that this is often a little more expensive.

Before sending your dissertation to a printing shop, there are three things you should do:

1. Save your dissertation as a PDF By saving your file as a PDF, the formatting will be consistent on every computer. This way you prevent any unpleasant surprises such as offsets when receiving your printed dissertation.

2. Check for language mistakes There’s nothing worse than finding a language mistake in your printed version. Make sure to proofread your dissertation or make use of a professional dissertation proofreading service .

3. Update the contents page Before saving your dissertation as a PDF, update the (automatic) table of contents. Don’t forget to cross-check the page numbers listed in the table of contents with the actual page number.

If you have recently completed your dissertation congratulations are in order! But the work is not finished – you now have to get your dissertation in front of examiners in a professional format. There are a number of factors to consider when producing a physical copy of your thesis :

• Type of binding (for example: helical or softback)
• Paper size (are some pages better suited for A3?)
• Print options (single or double-sided?)
• Paper quality (a range of gsm options are available)

What is Thesis/Dissertation Binding?

Thesis binding involves fastening the physical pages of your dissertation together to produce a single presentable document. As simple as it sounds, there is a lot to get right, and dissertation binding is important in giving a good impression of your work.

What are the different types of dissertation binding?

Spiral/helical/wired binding.

Spiral binding (also known as helical binding) and wired binding are very common for bachelors and masters dissertations. These options give a professional look and allow pages to be rotated 360 degrees, making for easy reading. Spiral binding uses a plastic coil, whilst wire binding uses a metal wire.

Fastback/softback binding

Fastback binding (also referred to as softback binding) uses glue to keep your dissertation pages together. This is not a very common choice for dissertation binding as it is rather formal for bachelors and masters, and perhaps not formal enough for PhD theses. Fastback binding also comes with a risk of glue losing fixity over time leading to pages falling out.

Thermal binding

Thermal binding is not very common but can be used for bachelors or masters dissertations. This type of binding is permanent (so pages cannot be easily added/removed) but is generally inexpensive. Another disadvantage of thermal bindings is that pages cannot be opened 360 degrees (as with fastback binding).

Plastic comb binding

Comb binding involves punching holes down the side of the page and binding with a plastic comb strip. This binding option is also suitable for bachelors and masters dissertations. It is a cheap option but can sometimes become difficult to navigate as pages become stuck on the plastic combing. One advantage of plastic comb binding is that it is easy to add and remove pages.

Paperback binding

Paperback binding will give your manuscript the appearance of a book and comes with personalisation options i.e. a titled cover page, spine and back. This gives a very professional appearance, too formal for a bachelors or masters dissertation, but ideal for a PhD thesis.

Hardback binding

Hardback binding again gives a book like appearance, but is expensive and typically reserved only for PhD theses. In addition to custom titling, spine and back, there is a range of material and colour options for hardback binding e.g. the gold lettering you may have seen on academic books.

What Paper Size Should I use?

Most universities will provide very clear instruction on paper sizes, most often A4. However, some pages such as technical drawings or maps may be best shown on A3. In these cases ‘fold out’ pages are an option but must be approved by your university guidelines.

Print Options:

Check your university guidelines when deciding whether to print single or double sided. If printing double sided, be careful as some pages should not be printed back to back. For example, new chapters should start on the right hand page (of a double spread) so blank pages may be required.

What Paper Quality is Suitable?

Paper thickness is measured in grams per square metre (gsm). Although there is no ideal paper thickness, too thin and you risk your dissertation feeling low quality. Too high and you risk your dissertation pages feeling like cardboard, and again pointing to low quality.

Things to Note:

Whichever service you use to bind your thesis or dissertation, there are a few important things to remember:

When using an online service check the turnaround time. Most services take around a week to print, bind, and deliver, though faster services are available at a cost. Some universities have an onsite printing service that students can use. These services likely offer binding options which satisfy your department’s dissertation submission requirements.

An electronic copy and physical copy of your dissertation will be read differently. Whilst consecutive pages are easy to compare on a computer screen, a physical copy may have pages printed on opposite sides of a single page (if double page printed) which makes side by side comparisons difficult. This is something to consider if your text frequently refers to images or tables overleaf.

Most thesis printing services only accept PDF file formats. Ensure that when you convert your dissertation to PDF that you review the document to ensure no errors occur during conversion.

Check your university dissertation guidance on margin requirements. It is also important to factor in margins when considering binding options. Typically a minimum margin of 2.5cm is required on the side of the page to be bound.

Although it comes with an additional cost, it may be useful to purchase personal copies of your bound thesis. You can then bring your bound copy to your Viva , and ensure that what you and your examiners are looking at are identical.

Tip #1- Choosing the right paper:  Most printing services use 80 g/m² paper by default. However, 80 g/m² paper is relatively thin and as a result, the print on the reverse side will shine through if you are printing double-sided. 

Tip:  Remember that printing and binding your thesis is not something you do every day – be sure to use high-quality paper and select 100 g/m² paper – if printing double-sided, we actually recommend 120 g/m² paper. BachelorPrint automatically uses 100 g/m² paper.

Tip #2- Printing single-sided or double-sided:  It’s totally up to you whether you print your thesis single-sided or double-sided. Make sure you check the examiner’s guidelines first – if there are none, the choice is yours!

So before you rush out to get it printed, always ensure the institutional guidelines on how the dissertation is to be printed and bound are strictly followed.

Types of Dissertation Binding  

Spending some time reviewing the binding options available is a great way to begin. Align your choice with the university requirements first, then start exploring binding possibilities. Remember to keep in mind factors like binding quality, durability, how professional it will appear, and the costs involved. Below are some of the common types of dissertation binding that one can consider. 

• Spiral binding : This type of dissertation binding is perfect for undergraduate or graduate students working on tight budgets as it is relatively inexpensive. Plastic or metal coils are used here to bind pages together (choices of color may be available), and the final output is straightforward to handle and read, given the flat opening that makes browsing through hassle-free.  
• Hardback binding : Students can choose this kind of binding for their final dissertation submission. It gives your dissertation a professional look. With hardcovers on the front and back, one can also try various kinds of lettering to make it more impactful. 
• Paperback binding : This option can be considered for informal submissions. Though it costs less than hardback binding, good quality, and flexible light covers can create a clean and professional appearance.  
• Thermal binding : Here, the binding is done with a transparent cover that highlights the dissertation’s title page. It has a professional look, is solid and reliable, and has color options. 
• Comb binding : This kind of binding is recommended for draft versions and costs less than a spiral binding option. It allows pages to be removed or added and comes with a transparent front and back cover.  

Dissertation Printing Options   

• Color or black and white: Before deciding on the colour option, check if your department or institution has laid out any guidelines in this regard. If it’s not specified, weigh in which one colour or a combination will make your dissertation visually appealing. Color printing tends to be expensive, and an overuse of colors can be overwhelming and distracting. So, use colour wisely and only where required – for graphs or figures, for example. 
• Single or double-sided: University guidelines should be the foremost factor in deciding to opt for single-sided or double-sided printing. The latter is obviously cheaper. However, take care to ensure that the title page, acknowledgments, table of contents, abstract, and bibliography start on fresh pages. Similarly, new chapters should also begin on the front side of the paper. You also need to consider the difficulty in comparing images and graphs referred to in the text if these appear on either side of a page. 
• Layout: Check departmental guidelines on the layout and margin requirements. Usually, a 2.5 cm margin on the side is required to make allowance for binding. 
• Paper weight: The paper should not be so thin that the print is visible on the other side, nor should it be too thick. For better quality output, consider using a paper weight of 100gsm. 
• Number of copies: Depending on your department guidelines, you may have to submit one to three copies of your dissertation. Hence, three to five copies are usually printed. 

Things to check before printing dissertations

Before printing your dissertation, make sure to do some final checks, as listed below. 

• Ensure that your document is saved in PDF file format: PDF files are usually accepted by thesis printing services. Hence, by keeping your dissertation in pdf file format beforehand, you can check for any discrepancies or errors that may arise during conversion.
• Proofread your dissertation: This is crucial to eliminate any grammatical or language errors, misspelled words, or incomplete sentences that may have been overlooked.
• Review the tables, graphs, and any other visual elements: Formatting can affect the layout of tables and graphs. So, cross-check visuals, ensure correct labeling, and check if they correspond to the information in the text. Also, ensure that the images are of high quality.
• Check with the printing services beforehand: It is always helpful to check ahead with printing service providers on the time and cost of printing and binding. Also, check with your department for any formalities to be completed while submitting the printed dissertation. This allows you to plan things well in advance.

Preparing your thesis for print

On this page, thesis specifications.

Theses must be formatted and printed according to the following specifications:

• Paper size: international A4 size (29.7cm x 21cm).
• Paper weight: at least 70gsm for the original copy.
• Margins: left-hand margin at least 4cm, other margins at least 2cm for single-sided printing. See below for Setting correct margins.
• Format: at least one and a half line spacing, typescript or computer printout, single or double-sided printing.
• Volume: no more than 6cm in spine width and 2.5kg in weight.
• Printing on spine: all copies will appear as shown in the Cover and Spine example image.
• Title page: full title of thesis, author's name, full title of degree, correct official name of the School, name of University, year of presentation.
• Accompanying material: accompanying material such as photographs and inserts must be securely mounted, with margins as detailed above. While there are no restrictions on the size of accompanying maps, drawings, musical scores, or computer printouts, these must be clearly indicated when submitting for binding. Note additional charges may apply.

Cover and spine

The cover and spine will be bound and printed. Here are some examples of how it will looks when completed.

Permanent binding

Binding specifications are:

• cased-in and sewn, overcast on to tapes, if plates or inserts are present
• rounded spine
• buckram, or equivalent quality binding cloth
• gold lettering down the spine will detail: PhD or degree; year; author's initials and family name
• gold lettering on the front cover will detail: full title of PhD or degree and author's full name.

Cloth colours

Setting correct margins

The size of the margins in your thesis is very important.  Correct margins ensure that none of your thesis will be cut off in the printing and binding process, and it also makes the thesis look neat.

Single-sided pages

The standard margins for a UWA thesis printed on single-sided pages are as follows:

• Inside edge: 4cm
• Outside edge: 2cm
• Top and bottom: 2cm

As you can see in the image, the 4cm margin is on the left hand side of the page (the inside edge, the side of the page that’s bound), and the 2cm margin goes on the right (the outside edge of the page).

Double-sided pages

If you are printing your thesis double-sided, your margins need to be mirrored. This means that for every second page of your thesis, the margins need to be reversed, so it has 2cm on the inside, and 4cm on the outside.

This is necessary as it will allow the print on the back of the double-sided page to be placed away from the binding edge.

If you want to print your thesis double-sided, but you haven’t mirrored your margins, you must change the margins in your original document before submitting it to us.

If you have issues with changing your margins to mirrored, you can just print the thesis single-sided instead. UWA doesn’t have a requirement for single or double-sided printing, so it doesn't matter which way you do it.

Or, when ordering online you can select the option: “I need Uniprint to check my margins – additional charge applies”. We will then look at your thesis and make the appropriate changes from there. Please note this will incur additional charges and time required.

Landscape pages

The rules described above also apply for landscape pages. That is, 4cm needs to go on the top of the content of the page for single-sided printing, as shown in the image.

If you are printing your thesis double-sided, it’s important that the margins are correct for the landscape page content.

Please note that in Word, sometimes it won’t allow you to adjust the margins of the landscape pages. If so, they may have to be adjusted by hand, or we may need to do it for you.

Adding blank pages for double-sided printing

If you are printing your thesis on double-sided pages, you need to add blank pages in certain locations. These blank pages make sure that the start of each chapter sits on the front of the printed page, instead of the back of the last page at the end of a chapter.

The blank pages need to be added around the start of the thesis, from the cover page to the introduction. As well as the start of each chapter, depending on whether the chapter starts on an odd page number or not.

The image is an example of where blank pages should be added to your thesis when printing double-sided.

There are blank pages after every section of the beginning of the thesis, and the start of the chapters are on odd-numbered pages.

Thesis printing FAQs

• Are there any limits to how big the thesis is when they're bound? We can bind books that are up to 400 pieces of paper thick – so if its printed double sided that means 800 pages with no issue.
• Can I bring a printed copy of my thesis and have you photocopy the rest of the copies? Yes, however we don’t recommend it as the quality of photocopies will not be as good as a direct print from a digital file. Also note submitting your job online gives access to cheaper printing prices.
• How do I print and pay for my thesis if I am overseas? When you submit via our online ordering , you pay by credit card and can specify the delivery instructions.

Submit by our online ordering and:

• Temporary binding will normally be ready to collect from the shop by the time you get there.
• Permanent soft bound versions are normally done within 1 working week.
• Permanent hard case bound versions normally take 2 weeks from the end of the week they are submitted.
• How many copies of my thesis do I need? There is no set amount, though if in doubt ask your school or supervisor. They should be able to advise how many copies are required for both your temporary bound and permanent bound copies. Note: You can order and pay for as many personal copies as you like.

When you submit your thesis via online ordering the price is automatically calculated. You will get the price before it’s actually submitted.

If you wish to have the school pay for it you need to ask them for a BU (Business Unit) and PG (Project Grant) number and the name and contact details of the accounts contact. We must have the costs approved by the school before we can begin production.

There are three types of binding for theses:

• Temporary spiral binding (for copies submitted for marking)
• Traditional hard cover binding (for permanent copies)
• Soft bound (cheaper option for permanent copies)

When the school is covering the payment of your thesis, please check with your school regarding their requirements.  Personal copies can be any colour you wish.

Note: you can order a mix of colours to satisfy you’re own and the schools requirements.

• What type of paper will my thesis be printed on? We print all thesis on high quality 80gsm paper, for both temporary and permanent bound copies.
• Will the school pay for my own copies of my thesis? If you wish to have the school pay for it you need to ask them for a BU (Business Unit) and PG (Project Grant) number and the name and contact details of the accounts contact. We must have the costs approved by the school before we can begin production.

With our online ordering submission you can upload your finished thesis as the preferred PDF format or as a word file (and it will convert it to a PDF for you). You can even use it to join several documents together into one PDF.

Whenever you do make a PDF from word, we suggest you check it thoroughly.

When you are submitting your job – you can download the generated PDF and save it to your desktop for checking.

• Can I bring printed copies of my thesis already printed and have them bound? Yes, we can bind printing that you’ve provided to us.
• Can I include a CD in my thesis? We can provide adhesive CD pockets for your thesis, and we can also burn CD’s for you for an additional fee.
• Can I print A3 pages in my thesis? Yes you can, but you must tell us which pages you need printed as A3.

We do have the limited ability to modify your thesis (such as removing an errant full stop or making small adjustments to your margins), but ideally, you should provide the thesis to us in a state that’s ready to print.

If we have to do any major changes to your thesis for any reason, then a fee will be incurred and the production times will be affected.

• Do I have to tell you what pages of my thesis I want in colour? When you submit your thesis for printing by our online ordering process, you can choose to print all pages black and white, all pages in colour or you can go and specify each page. Note: Black and white is cheaper than colour printing.
• Do the temporary bound copies of my thesis have a plastic cover and a black card on the back? Yes, it does.

We offer a complete printing and binding service at our Campus Print Shop, Market Square. Our friendly, experienced staff are on hand to offer advice and support. Our high speed, high quality Xerox colour printers can print 55 pages per minute and our ‘while-you-wait’ binding service takes 5 to 10 minutes, ensuring you get your work ready for submission as soon as possible.

Print using DP Online

You can upload your finished PDF to our online print store 24/7. Using DP Online, all you need to do is upload your document, choose your binding option and preview your work, all from the comfort of your home! If your submission deadline is the same day, then as long as you upload your PDF documents by 5am and choose our ‘express service’ you will be able to collect your bound thesis / dissertation from the Campus Print Shop at Market Square from 11am (Monday-Friday).

Self Service Printing

At the Print Shop, Market Square; we have four self-service customer PCs where you can print anything you need. We can then bind it for you at a small additional cost.

Binding Service

Binding your thesis or dissertation is not required.

Once your thesis has been accepted and approved by the Office of Graduate Programs you may submit your thesis to be bound via an online bindery. While Florida Tech does not endorse a particular bindery, the following companies have experience working with theses and dissertations.

Prices will vary by company, order specifications and shipping. Please review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) of each company online for more specific information about how to submit your order.

Some questions to consider are:

• How many copies would you like?
• Is it a requirement of your sponsor to present a bound thesis upon return home?
• How quickly do you need your bound copy?
• Do you need international shipping?
• Would you like to include your original signature page in your bound copy?
• Is a scanned copy of your signature page OK?

• The Copy Center is in the Academic Quad, Building 406, Room 122.

• Includes the choice to have The Florida Institute of Technology seal applied to the front

cover . Use the Gold Foil Emblem and Lettering menu to select Florida Tech’s university emblem.

• A sample bound thesis is available to review at the Library iDesk.
• If notified, PHD will hold binding until the signature pages arrive in the mail.
• You may specify particular pages to be printed in color.

• Thesis On Demand ships to U.S. addresses only, no PO boxes.
• Requires an extra order form and fee to mail original signature pages for inclusion.
• A4 size paper can only be printed on White Vellum 60lb paper.
• Binds in Buckram cloth only or leather (+$85.00).

This will take you to our convenient automated online ordering system where you can place your order, select the delivery method and make payment in a few easy steps. Major credit cards and University  procurement cards are accepted. Thesis and Dissertation Styles

We offer three styles of thesis hardcover binding. Traditional colors for the cover material are Navy Blue or Black. Cover lettering (including the UC Seal when Style 3 is selected) is printed UC Gold, white, or black.

	Lettering on the spine of the cover only - ($62.00/binding) Various ink and cloth color combinations
	Lettering on the spine and front cover - ($69.00/binding) UC Gold on black buckram
	Lettering on the spine and front cover with the University seal - ($80.00/binding) First Photo - White on Black buckram Second Photo - Black on Blue grey buckram
	IMITATION LEATHER: We also offer Imitation Leather for an additional $8.00 per volume bound. -
