Political science at UH West Oʻahu is distinctive in the inclusiveness of its concerns. It differs from the other social sciences in drawing from all the disciplines, from psychology and anthropology to history and philosophy, in offering a 'big picture' perspective on our public and private lives. The discipline goes beyond simply understanding the way things are, to an ethical consideration of 'what could and should be.' In this sense a political science education is transformational, enlightening the political culture and strengthening democracy. Today the big picture allows us to see our most pressing local problems as increasingly influenced by global economic and environmental forces in a world where multinational corporations are becoming more powerful than nation-states. At the same time there is a move back to localism in all its positive and negative aspects from place-based community building and identity politics to xenophobic ethnic nationalism and militant sectarianism. New electronic information technologies and social media are giving individuals and non-governmental organizations unprecedented access to the global stage in shaping politics. The goal of the program is to offer students an in-depth understanding of this rapidly changing landscape as a frame for self-understanding. In so doing, it helps students cultivate the motivation, skills, and creativity necessary for constructive participation in public life through civic engagement. Teaching strategies are personalized and promote holistic, democratic, active, service and multi-cultural modes of learning. All of this makes Political Science at UH West Oʻahu central to a well-rounded education. This also gives the degree wide application in most areas of public, personal, and work life. Graduate Admissions
Students in our PhD programs are encouraged from day one to think of this experience as their first job in business academia—a training ground for a challenging and rewarding career generating rigorous, relevant research that influences practice.
Our doctoral students work with faculty and access resources throughout HBS and Harvard University. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.
There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. Explore more here about each program’s requirements & curriculum, read student profiles for each discipline as well as student research , and placement information.
The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has four areas of study: Accounting and Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program
The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.
The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research
The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

The Evaluation Process
Basic Requirements
Evaluation Criteria
Following the December 15 deadline, all applications are reviewed for completeness and to determine whether at least one faculty member is willing to consider advising the applicant . All applications meeting this initial screening process are evaluated by a committee of graduate faculty based on the following criteria, with the goal of notifying applicants by April 15:
1. Funding – it is considered advantageous if a student has secured his or her own support through scholarships or fellowships, or if their advisor will be able to support them on a research assistantship.
2. Prior research experience
3. Whether the applicant has authored or co-authored a peer-reviewed publication as a result of his or her prior research experience.
4. Potential, as indicated by letters of recommendation.
5. Prior coursework and/or background in biology and the botanical sciences.
Other factors may also be involved in the final decision of whether to admit an applicant (such as available resources within the School).
IMPORTANT : To be considered, an application must contain all of the above documents. Delays in processing and reviewing applications are often caused by late arrival of transcripts and letters of recommendation.
Financial Support
In general, applicants will receive notice of financial support at the same time as their acceptance to the program.
Teaching assistantships are open to students accepted in either the MS or the PhD program. Teaching assistantship appointments include nine month stipends as well as a tuition waiver.
Local students (graduating from a Hawaii high school) applying to the Botany MS program may be eligible for support through the Hauoli Mau Loa Foundation Graduate Assistantships.
Research assistantships are sometimes available through grants to specific faculty members and usually include a tuition waiver. Research assistantships are either 9- or 11-month appointments.
Students with interests in ecology, evolution and conservation biology are encouraged inquire about possible support and program opportunities through the Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology Graduate (EECB) Specialization Program.
The East-West Center offers scholarships to Asian, Pacific, and American students for affiliation in one of their programs. This month, we’re featuring MSBA class of ’22 graduate, Alex Fried . A native of Plainview, New York, Alex also completed his undergraduate degree at UW-Madison. Before joining the master’s program, his experience with analytics was primarily in a classroom setting during undergrad, specifically, two Gen Bus courses for analytics (306/307), and marketing research. Alex assisted a PhD student with research on gun brand responses and sentiment to mass shootings from Tweets sent out from stores across the country. He also continued with another project in collaboration with the same PhD candidate focused on eye tracking and banner ads on websites.
Alex now works for Spaulding Ridge as an Associate, Data Solutions Consultant where he does data engineering work in architecting and development, as well as data analytics and modeling for clients using primarily Snowflake, dbt, Azure Data Factory, Fivetran, Power BI, Tableau, and Salesforce CRMA.
Alex says that the MSBA program provided him with exposure to a myriad of tools that real businesses are using today to enhance their data practices. He felt that the program allowed him to grow in the field, understand more about the industry, and connect with countless working professionals with endless knowledge. When asked what surprised him the most about the program, he said, “for it only being the third year, it was very well put together. The topics and courses were all super relevant and Program Director, Cody Baldwin, showed he’s willing to listen to industry experts and evolve the curriculum as needed.”
To current and future students, Alex says: “Never stop learning. This is an ever evolving industry that is taking over the business world. Stay up to date with the current trends in the industry and find some online learning resources. You don’t have to pay for courses if you don’t want to, as there are countless videos on YouTube and LinkedIn that are aimed at helping you. Additionally, find people willing to invest in your growth and development. I have been super lucky to have that in my job where it’s encouraged to step into more advanced roles, learn new tools, and get certified in those tools.”
