1.   Research- or experience-based content .  Perhaps the number one sign of quality within online educational websites is the presence of either scholarly research or professional, direct experience. Avoid sites that were not designed by academics, administrators, educational organizations, publications, or, of course, teachers themselves. After all, the people who know the most about a given profession are always those that work within it.

2.   Variety .  As you probably already know, teaching is such a complex and challenging line of work, so the best way to approach it is by engaging with a diverse range of perspectives. Sites that profess to have the way are probably a no-go. Look for websites and online resources that offer a wide and broad variety of advice, experience, and knowledge to enrich your own perspective. 

3. Concrete examples .  Do you remember that old creative writing proverb, “show, don’t tell”? Well the same goes for educational websites. Look for sites that contain concrete examples of lesson plans, assessments, class-wide discussion questions, and forms of feedback. Starfall was developed in the classroom by teachers and opened in August 2002 as a free public service to teach children to read. Since then it has expanded to include standards in language arts and mathematics for preschool through fifth grade and above. The program emphasizes exploration, play, and positive reinforcement—encouraging children to become confident and intrinsically motivated. Starfall activities are research-based and align with state learning objectives for English language arts and mathematics. Its emphasis on phonemic awareness, systematic sequential phonics, and common sight words in conjunction with audiovisual interactivity is especially effective for teaching emergent readers, children of all ages with special needs or learning difficulties, as well as ELL (ESL) students. It is widely used in schools and homeschools.

Starfall’s low-cost membership program expands the free content to include additional animated songs, mathematics activities, and reading. Membership supports the production of new books, educational games, and movies.

The Communications Specialist is responsible for promoting AHS events, activities, and content through a variety of mediums; creating and disseminating content about Arizona history through the AHS website and all social media accounts; writing and issuing press releases; managing the appropriate accounts; and supervising the graphic designer to ensure the quality and timeliness of all agency graphic design projects.

The communications specialist will develop community relationships, especially relationships with media partners, to promote AHS.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Social Media:

• Develop and implement a strategic social media plan that will help increase museum attendance, membership rolls, public awareness of our collecting needs, and brand recognition, among other things

• Social media responsibilities include creating and coordinating the creation of engaging content including at live events, developing a social media content calendar, developing and updating an internal social media policy, and serving as the administrator for all AHS social media

Communications:

• Maintains and updates media contact list and data

• Serves as the point of contact for media inquiries

Digital time out

Just a couple of decades ago, teachers at conferences heard that smartphones were the education tool of the future. Now it appears that the national mood is to take broad steps to keep those devices out of classrooms.

Since students could pass notes in class, student personal communication technology has been a classroom challenge. Teachers of a certain age can remember when digital pagers posed a problem. But smartphones represent a whole new problematic level; students could be distracted by everything from checking their socials to starting or continuing a fight to arranging a rendezvous in the hall, all while the teacher tries to explain quadratic equations.

Schools, trying to embrace current technology or just caught flatfooted, have for years left teachers to develop their own policies and procedures for dealing with the ubiquitous devices. Larger bans have fared poorly. In 2006, the Bloomberg administration banned cellphones in New York City schools, raising an uproar from parents and teachers, with outspoken opposition from everyone from Councilman Bill De Blasio to UFT President Randi Weingarten opposed the policy and parents threatened to sue .

While students often push back against phone bans , parents can be the real challenge for a school district. For helicopter parents, the power to stay in touch throughout the entire day can be irresistible. For families that are stretching resources (two jobs, three kids, one car), cellphones can be invaluable. And in an age with heightened fear of school shootings and other emergency situations, many parents to do not trust the schools to provide the kind of quick crisis communication that they need.

But in the last few years, schools have reached their breaking point. In 2015, Mayor Bill De Blasio lifted New York’s cellphone ban , but New York—both city and state—are now contemplating a new ban. And AFT President Randi Weingarten in a 2024 speech took credit for helping Cleveland c raft a ban of their own .

And while pressure to ban the devices has been building in education circles for years, works like Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation have fed the idea that internet connection is at least partly responsible for a growing mental health problem among children.

Some parents still pose an obstacle . Philadelphia principal Jose Lebron told Education Week of parent pushback on his cellphone ban, “You would have thought the world was going to end.” One teacher told me that when their school imposed a new rule requiring students to keep phones all day in magnetic lock bags, parents showed up at school to protest, complete with protest signs.

There are also logistical challenges. How and when are phones collected? Where are they stored, and how are these very valuable pieces of personal property safeguarded?

With all that settled, classroom cellphone bans still come down to one moment. The teacher sees a student with a cellphone out. The teacher tells the student to hand it in. The student says no. What happens next? Does the teacher stop class in order to engage in a battle of wills? Does the teacher let it go as not worth the trouble? Does the teacher involve the office, and if so, does the office provide meaningful support?

It’s the irony of large sweeping policies like this. Education Week counts at least twelve states that have laws or policies containing student cellphone use, and innumerable districts have created policies as well. But the effectiveness of all those policies will boil down to how effectively building principals back up their teachers.

State policies make it easier for local district to pass the buck (”There’s no point in arguing with us; this came from the state”). But as David Bloomfield, an education leadership, law, and policy professor told NPR, implementation is “going to take time. It's going to take expense, and it's going to take enforcement." While some teachers are already writing about “ the joy of a cellphone free school day, ” it will be up to local school leaders to provide the support for effective implementation of these policies. Where administrators find the strength to handle all the various obstacles, this may be the year that teachers finally have one less device competing for student attention.

Dozens of colleges see financial aid turmoil impacting freshman class makeups

The Education Department is assuring schools and students that its financial aid process will be fixed after a botched overhaul led some colleges to say they were seeing decreased enrollments.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said he’s “very confident” households will be able to start applying for federal financial aid by Dec. 1, just weeks after officials pushed back the launch date for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by two months to Dec. 1 for the 2025-26 academic year.

The move aims to buy more time to test the online form with select students and schools after months of glitches and delays roiled the college application process for millions of students this year.

“We’ve got to do better, and we’re going to do better,” Cardona told NBC News this week. Going forward, the application experience is “going to be simpler — 15, 20 minutes,” he promised.

Already, fallout from the months of snags is showing up in enrollments, many higher-education officials say.

About three-quarters of the 384 private institutions that responded to a recent survey by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities said FAFSA issues altered the makeup of incoming freshman classes.

Forty-three percent said their first-year cohort is smaller than the prior one, according to a summary of findings NAICU released from the July leg of the survey, which it plans to continue conducting through September. The 850-school association told NBC News that 18% of respondents reported FAFSA problems have reduced the racial or ethnic diversity of freshman classes, and 27% said they logged fewer financial aid recipients.

The Education Department recognizes that this year’s FAFSA rollout “has been challenging for students, families, and postsecondary institutions,” a spokesperson said in response to the findings, but added that the agency couldn’t independently verify NAICU’s unpublished data. “The Department won’t rest until all eligible students get the help they need.”

The FAFSA difficulties have pushed decision dates and aid offerings far past the traditional May 1 deadline for many students. While most of the problems have been resolved, campus officials are worn out and say the new Dec. 1 date needs to hold at all costs.

“It’s imperative the Department meet the delivery date with a flawless rollout and fully functional FAFSA. ‘On or before December 1’ must be on or before December 1,” Mark Becker, president of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, said in a statement this month.

The postponed launch also means most households won’t be able to start their forms until weeks after a presidential election in which the fate of the Education Department itself is on the ballot.

Former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies have proposed dismantling the agency, which evaluates students’ eligibility for federal aid — a process many schools rely on to draw up their own offers — and disburses Pell grants to low-income undergrads and federal student loans.

“I want to close up [the] Department of Education, move education back to the states,” Trump told Elon Musk this month in a conversation on X, the billionaire GOP donor ’s social media platform.

Cardona declined to comment on the election but said, “We’re going to continue fighting to make sure more students have access to higher education and that they’re not paying debt for the rest of their lives, too.”

“Last year, there were some challenges,” he acknowledged. “We’ve learned from those.” In the meantime, he urged applicants for the 2025-26 academic year to prepare by creating an FSA ID on studentaid.gov so they can receive email updates.

In May, Cardona announced a “full-scale review” of the Federal Student Aid office that oversees FAFSA and promised “transformational changes” at the division. As of this week, officials said they’ve processed 14.2 million FAFSAs, with no remaining backlogs, and completions are down only 2.8% since last year — though the National College Attainment Network says that falloff is even greater, at nearly 10% .

The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators praised the Education Department for listening to input from administrators and “communicating fall timelines ahead of time.” But Beth Maglione, the group’s interim president and CEO, urged the government to get it right all at once for the following academic year.

“The fact that we are still, to this day, dealing with the aftershocks of this year’s FAFSA rollout shows just how imperative it is that the process is thoroughly tested from end to end and launched as a system, not in a piecemeal manner,” she said in a statement this month.

Kristi Childs is preparing to fill out the FAFSA with her daughter, Hanalise Yarbrough, 17, who just started her senior year of high school in DeSoto County, Mississippi. Childs said she had trouble filling out the form last year for her two 19-year-old twins, Madison and Mason Yarbrough, both of whom are sophomores in college, although the latter is taking a semester off.

“I sure hope that they work the bugs out and have it ready to make it actually user-friendly and to have results quickly,” Childs said.

Hanalise is hoping to attend Northwest Mississippi Community College for two years before potentially transferring to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City but said she’s “always been kind of worried” about financing college.

“To be honest, I don’t know much about the FAFSA. I’ve taken a college and career readiness class from my high school, but it all sounded really confusing,” she said.

Hanalise is a flutist who’s “mainly riding on” a potential band scholarship, but her mother said they will need federal support.

“We still have dorms and books and meals and all of those things to make sure that we have covered,” Childs said, adding that a smooth, timely FAFSA process is “the only way that our family is going to be able to afford to put another child in college.”
