The Apple launch events are always a great learning experience for a presenter and a designer. The event always seems larger than life by following some basic presenting rules that do not take the attention away from the product at any point. We have laid out some of the learnings from the Far Out 2022, that will help you in your next pitch presentation :

  • The event opens up by talking about how excited people who have built the product are that the product is now going to be available for people to use and make their lives easier.

  • Apple never shies away from telling how great their product is, so stop being humble and tell the world how great your offering is, and elaborate on your expertise and accomplishments.

Tim Cook-Inspired Presentation Tips (and Missteps) from the 2019 Apple Event

When it comes to giving presentations, we can all agree that Steve Jobs was up there as one of the best storytellers of our time. And while it may seem impossible to get to Jobs’ level of presenting finesse, it’s easy to pick up on presentation best practices simply by watching old Apple keynotes. When the torch was passed to Tim Cook in 2011, the expectations were high — and Cook did not disappoint. Sure, he’s no Steve Jobs, but his comfort on stage, ability to stress key points, and confident body language is everything we’d expect from an Apple exec.

To start, the best presenters utilize solid storytelling techniques to support the core message — and Apple does just that. Apple has been hosting the WWDC for over 20 years, but the keynote is never just about the release of a new product, it’s about storytelling. They paint a picture of the company’s journey to the new announcement(s) and take the audience along for the ride. 

For those history nerds out there, here are some fun facts: The first Apple WWDC dates back to 1983, but the first noteworthy presentation wasn’t until 1997, when Steve Jobs returned to the company. From then on, Steve Jobs began most presentations with a company update and ended them by introducing the newest technology, much like what we see in today’s famous keynote presentations. In 2011, following Jobs’ health decline, Tim Cook gave his first WWDC speech which was a live demonstration of Siri in the iPhone 4S.

The most recent Apple Keynote on September 10th, 2019 announced the new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, and the world tuned in to watch Tim Cook inform us of Apple's "latest and greatest" technologies during his captivating speech. Still, no presentation — even Tim Cook’s — is perfect. But instead of just passing judgement, how can we learn from his successes and failures? What can we leave, and what can we take away?

Presentation Tips Inspired by Tim Cook ‍

#1. speak slowly (7:35).

Speaking slowly is actually one of the most underrated speaking skills. When presenters take their time while speaking, it allows the audience to absorb what they’re saying. Tim Cook talked at a steady speed through the entire keynote, making it easier to digest each statement. ‍

#2. Emphasize main points (10:55)

If you tuned in to this month’s Apple WWDC, you’ll notice that all of the main points appeared on the screen behind Cook, while he emphasized them in his speech ( "We're going under the sea!" ). These visuals help the audience focus more closely on what the presenter is explaining, and makes more of an impact (which helps with information retention).  ‍

#3. Move around on the stage (3:08)

Tim Cook did a really great job at moving around on the stage, engaging with all corners of the audience. Seasoned presenters will be able to do this seamlessly and with ease, so that no section feels neglected. 

Biggest Mistakes Tim Cook Made in his 2019 Apple Keynote ‍

#1. pausing after each sentence for applause (8:47).

‍ Tim Cook would often pause after each point, waiting for an applause ( Awkward! ). Great presenters can deliver their speech and still pay attention to the audience's reactions in real time. Don't worry, this takes practice. ‍

#2. Not engaging with the audience members and making eye contact (11:54)

‍ Sure, Tim Cook did a great job scanning the audience, and roaming the stage, but he didn’t really engage directly with those in the auditorium. Instead, he kept his eyes focused ahead of where he was walking or at the screen. Making eye contact, and engaging with the crowd, is crucial when delivering a message. You want your guests to feel like you’re talking to them directly, instead of preaching to an audience of hundreds of thousands of strangers.  ‍

#3. Not allowing time for Q&A (2:14:33)

As Tim Cook closes, he takes a moment to thank the Apple employees for their hard work and dedication, but doesn't allow time for questions. While a Q&A at an event like this Apple keynote could easily take hours, it’s important to allow your audience time to process the information and ask questions in real time. If they leave confused, or unsure of something, it could affect your call to action (which, in this case, is probably "Buy more Apple products please!")

How to Apply These Tips to Your Next Presentation

All that to say, the "public speaking" part is only about half of the presentation equation. Just as important (and time consuming) is the design of your presentation, especially when it’s up to you to design it yourself. It goes without saying that most of us don’t have a team the size of Apple to professionally design our presentations, but good news! New design-a.i. tools can actually do the design work for you.

After all, visual aids help to capture and maintain your audience’s attention. Statistics show that if you have your audience’s attention and it’s focused on what you’re presenting (a win in itself), they have a much better chance of retaining the information you are trying to convey. Presentation design can play a big part in this. 

If you Google good presentation design, you’ll find a lot of opposing opinions on best practices. For example, Guy Kawasaki believes in the 10/20/30 rule. He says, “[a] presentation should have ten slides , last no more than twenty minutes, and contain no font [size] smaller than thirty points.” Similarly, some presenters will tend to go heavy on images while others prefer more text. Here at Beautiful.ai we like to think that less is more, and prefer a more modern, minimalistic approach. Luckily, our smart slides adapt when content is added, which makes presentation creation much easier for those who lack design skills. 

But as we said, good design alone doesn’t make a good presentation.

And even big name presenters like Tim Cook can get it wrong. But now you know what missteps to avoid, so, the next time you find yourself in front of an audience you can apply all the “Dos” we learned from Tim Cook, like using your visual aids to your advantage, engaging with the crowd, emphasizing your main points, and keeping it simple. Public speaking doesn’t have to be a cringe-worthy chore, it can actually be fun once you get comfortable enough.

What every presenter can learn at an apple event.

In a recent New York Times article Shira Ovide wrote that  We Don’t Need Tech Infomercials . The article was mostly inspired by an invitation to an Apple Event.

The author expressed her opinion that “it’s time to end the elaborate staged events that are essentially infomercials for new technology products.” It seems she isn’t a huge fan of Apple Events.

Sure, the goal of these events is to get people excited about upcoming products. They are commercial in nature. But as long as the presentations are informative and entertaining, I see nothing wrong here — especially because these events can also be great learning opportunities for presenters.

Case in point:  last week’s Apple Event : 

Apple demonstrated how to take their winning format of live stage presentations and turn it into an online event that kept people glued to their screens. They successfully transitioned from using physical space with slides as backdrops to using your screen as a canvas to convey information.

While the delivery format has changed, Apple presenters still use the same proven principles to keep the audience engaged. They: 

Build Anticipation and Instill Curiosity

Apple starts building anticipation even before the event begins. The announcements are typically vague, yet intriguing. They instill curiosity and thus increase the desire to attend the event.

And during the event, presenters use language that further increases curiosity and keeps the attention of viewers high. 

A few examples from last week’s event:

  • And we are not done yet.
  • But there’s even more that it can do.
  • Oh, wait, I forgot!
  • Get ready for this.
  • And there’s more.
  • Check this out.

With statements like these, interspersed strategically, listeners can’t help but stay alert and attentive to find out what comes next. 

Transfer Enthusiasm with Adjectives

Steve Jobs was a master of using appropriate adjectives to express his excitement about Apple products and services. And it has become part of Apple’s culture. 

Tim Cook demonstrated this perfectly when he announced a new color choice for the iPhone 12. While it is just another color, the way Tim announced it made it sound as revolutionary as the iPhone itself. 

This is how he let the audience know that the iPhone 12 now comes with an additional color:

“And we have another  beautiful  color,  perfect  for spring. We’re so excited to introduce a  new ,  gorgeous  purple. It looks  stunning  with the precision-milled back glass and new design. It has elements of sophistication and brightness with the color-matched aluminum edges. It’s  absolutely beautiful . ”

You might think that this is overdoing it a bit when you read it. But when you listen to Tim Cook delivering these words with skill, it becomes clear that even just another color becomes more with the help of adjectives. It becomes an object of affection. 

Respect the Attention Span of the Audience

Apple has always structured their presentations to keep them engaging. And they change presenters often to add variety. Last week’s event was no exception. 

In just one hour, Apple made a total of eight announcements in bite-sized chunks. 

The shortest segment was about Apple’s environmental initiatives, which took Tim Cook just over one minute. The segment for the purple iPhone was just 1:16 minutes, and that included a video. 

The longest two segments were the announcements of the new iMac and the new iPad, both at around 20 minutes. And those were delivered by several presenters, each in a different setting. Each scene was only two, three minutes before Apple changed things up to reset viewer’s attention span.

It is also worth noting how well trained all of Apple’s presenters are. They appear casual and relaxed while keeping things conversational, something anybody can achieve with a bit of coaching .

There is so much presenters can learn from these events, I hope they will be around for a long time to come. Given how much success Apple has with this approach, I have a hunch they will.

Apple's Top Leaders Use This Simple Presentation Hack to Make Their Slides Instantly Memorable

Your audience is overwhelmed with data, numbers, and statistics in their daily lives. When they're watching your presentation, they certainly don't want to be bombarded by another barrage of numbers. But in most cases, you can't avoid meaningful statistics that provide the evidence for your pitch or proposal. What's a speaker to do?

The folks who design Apple's slides have a solution. It's brilliant. It works. And you can do it easily in your next presentation. Here's the simple hack: Stick to one number per slide.

For an example, look no further than Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference held earlier this month.

When Apple CEO  Tim Cook  began talking about a new release of Apple's mobile operating system (iOS 13), he said: "iOS has the highest customer satisfaction in the industry, with an incredible 97 percent." The slide had one number in large font--97 percent. In smaller font beneath the number, a sentence read: "Customer satisfaction for iOS 12."

That's it. One number and one sentence.

Few leaders know numbers as well Cook does. He's capable of poring over excel spreadsheets for hours and catching the one discrepancy that everyone else overlooked. Yet, when Cook delivers public presentations, he's careful to focus on one number on one slide. Only after he's done explaining the statistic does he move to another slide.

"Our adoption rate is industry leading as well," Cook continued. "Eighty-five percent of iOS customers are on the latest release." What number is the one and only statistic on the slide? You got it--85 percent.

Cook isn't the only Apple presenter who follows the formula. All of Apple's senior executives use the same presentation template.

When Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, took the stage to show off the new features of iOS 13 for the iPhone, he rattled off a series of numbers related to the phone's performance. Each number got its own slide.

According to Federighi, the new OS allows phones to unlock FaceID 30 percent faster, downloads are 50 percent smaller, and updates are 60 percent smaller--all making apps a faster experience. In this order the slides read:

30 percent Faster FaceID unlock 50 percent Smaller app downloads 60 percent Smaller app updates

Steve Jobs began using the formula of one number or theme per slide long before business professionals even started thinking about designing presentations more effectively.

When I wrote The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs , I cited a presentation he delivered for the second version of the iPad. In the first five minutes, his slides altogether contained a total of just 33 words. To put that into context, it's said that the average presentation slide contains 40 words--that's on each slide.

Even today, most speakers create slides that look more like documents with numbers, charts, and bullet points. This is exactly the wrong way to present information that's intended to be recalled and acted upon. According to neuroscientists, our brains are energy hogs. The brain evolved to be as efficient as possible and to save energy. If it has to work too hard to figure out a slide, it tunes out.

Stick to one theme--one number--per slide. Your audience will thank you.
