How I Spent My Leisure Time (Essay Sample)

Introduction

Meaningfully engaging in life is investing in the things that you enjoy doing most. What gives you much joy and inspires you? What makes you feel giddy and relaxed at the end of doing it?

This essay focuses on leisure activities. The author explains his uses of leisure time and encourages others to get involved in leisure activities that are both fulfilling and satisfying at the end of a long day.

To try your hand at doing a custom essay on how you spend your leisure time, we’d be happy to help you with our essay writing services .

How I Spend My Leisure Time Essay

I admit that I am a very busy person, but I still believe in finding time to unwind and do enjoyable things. I intentionally block off time for leisure in my calendar. I also make it a point to aside resources and plan meticulously to ensure I get maximum relaxation from it.

Leisure is important to mental and physical wellness and should be taken seriously. It is a conscious decision I make to ensure that I am able to experience it regularly. Taking time out renews my vigor to tackle the challenging tasks I come across daily, as I am able to take breaks to reflect on a few issues about life. I mostly plan my leisure time on the weekends so that I can make space for my family and friends.

This is a short description of how I spend my leisure breaks.

How I Make My Free Time Count

My favorite way to spend my leisure time would be to hang out with my friends at the beach. I enjoy the cool breeze from the ocean and watching people have fun on the shore. Walking along the shores of the beach calms my inner chaos. Occasionally, I collect seashells on the beach and bring them to my siblings. Most of these outdoor activities highly depend on how favorable the weather is.

I also make the effort to make calls to friends I am unable to physically visit and check in on. Sometimes, the walks alone can take up my whole afternoon.

Other times, I like listening to the music albums of my favorite artists as I stroll along the beach. When the weather is hot, I like swimming on the beach or joining my friends to go fishing in deeper waters. Recently, I tried scuba diving and I liked the experience. I hope that I get to try it again soon. The breathtaking view of the reef is amazing.

Sometimes, the weather confines me indoors, but that does not mean I cannot have a good leisure break.

If I am having my leisure getaway indoors, I like trying out new recipes and different cuisines from all over the world. Being busy in the kitchen trying out new dishes is enjoyable, to say the least. The meals don’t always turn out the way I expect them to, but the experience is always fun for me.

Alternatively, I like reading non-fiction books, particularly those that talk about historical events, while relaxing on the couch. I like doing this with soft jazz playing in the background as I peruse through the pages.

At times, I also go to the cinemas and theaters and catch up on the latest movies and plays with friends. There are times when I just want to stay at home and catch up on my go-to shows. I like playing dance games competitively with my brother especially when he is in town. Although he is a better dancer than I am, we both enjoy the dance and have fun together.

I also travel to Africa annually and go on safaris or hike in the mountains. The experience is always great – from socializing with people of different cultures to watching animal wildlife in their natural habitat. The days I spend in Africa leave indelible memories in my mind and encourage me to save up to return and experience more.

The activities I mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg. I really like making the most out of my leisure breaks. All these experiences and memories push me to invest in rest.

I don’t know how you make use of your spare time, but I hope that you are using it well. It could simply be a matter of engaging in your hobbies, spending time with loved ones, soaking in nature, or even reading books. As long as it makes you feel happy and recharged by the time the next week rolls in, it is worth doing.

Different people have different kinds of preferences when it comes to maximizing their free time. There are so many activities to choose from – so there’s no excuse not to indulge in getaways for yourself.

Essay About A Leisure Time Activity

What do you do when you have so much free time that you can actually take extended time off?

I have had the blessing of enjoying a lot of free moments lately and it has given me the opportunity to get involved in the many things that give me joy. One of them is reading novels. I am a staunch fan of murder mysteries. I can never get enough breathers to go through them during a busy week at school, so my collection has been gathering dust at home. I have recently been able to finish two books each weekend, and I’m really enjoying it.

Another activity that I love doing is to write down my plans for the future. I don’t just mean plans for the next year. I like envisioning myself five or ten years from where I am and dreaming of what I’ll be able to accomplish by then.

Finally, I like playing games and indulging in recreational activities. Board games are a guilty pleasure for me. I recently rediscovered my love for classic Monopoly and word puzzles and have been challenging my family and friends for intense rematches on weekends.

What Are Popular Ways To Spend Leisure Time?

There are plenty of ways to wind down in your spare moments. There are those who get involved in competitive sports. Others want something more relaxing and simply hang out with family. More adventurous people travel to other parts of the world to experience and soak in another culture. Others write down their ideas. There are a rare few who spend days in the library looking to expand their knowledge on a certain topic or subject of interest. Then there are the more fun, casual, and popular group activities, such as karaoke, cocktails, hotel stays, and pampering trips.

Why Is Leisure Time Important?

Making space to relax and the wind is essential in making sure you can still excel in the other areas of your life. People say that rest is actually a life strategy. You don’t necessarily rest because you are lazy and don’t want to deal with your obligations. You get to rest for the ultimate good of those activities. It almost seems counterproductive, for example, to do a catnap the night before a heavy deadline. But ten minutes of sleep can actually re-energize your brain and refuel your creative juices so that you can power through the night and finish that requirement. Getting those breathers for yourself also protects you from burnout, which is a common ailment in today’s busy world where everything demands your time and attention. It gives you fresh starts, especially when you feel uninspired and stuck.

Why Spending Time With Your Family Is Important (And How To Do So)

' src=

In today’s chaotic world, having family time isn’t always easy. It can get pretty hard to coordinate schedules, especially if the family is large. Life demands that we work, attend school, nurture friendships, hobbies, etc. All of those things are extremely time-consuming and important—but so is spending time with your family.

Why is family time so important? Because we all need love and support, and a good, strong family can provide that regularly. For children, spending time with their family helps shape them into good, responsible adults, improve their mental health, and develop strong core values.

There are many positive effects of spending time with your family. My family and I, for instance (and this includes grandchildren as well), meet every Tuesday night for dinner and games. My older son and I take turns cooking. This gives all of us a chance to try some new recipes. After dinner, we play games. And without fail, they inspire competitiveness and laughter. As family night has evolved, the grandkids have invited their friends over as well, creating the need for more chairs but also expanding our circle of fun.

Aside from the obvious fun and games, there are other reasons why spending time with your family is paramount. In this article, I will provide you with multiple reasons why spending time with your family regularly is a win-win. And then, I will lay out some ways on how to do it.

Let’s get started, shall we?

Why Spending Time With Your Family Is Important

Here are six reasons why it’s important to spend time with your family.

1. Provides the Opportunity to Bond

When you spend time together as a family—talking about your day, your highs, your lows—it fosters communication. As parents, it gives you the chance to listen to your children, to hear them out, to learn about what’s going on in their world. It also provides you with the opportunity to use life situations as teaching moments.

Before our Tuesday night dinner/game nights, my family used to see each other pretty regularly but not consistently, especially the grandkids. Our family night changed all that. Now, it’s guaranteed that the grandchildren, along with some of their friends, will be there. Not only do I get to find out what’s been happening in their lives, but they also get to know us better. It’s creating memories they can treasure forever, as well as modeling the Get-Together tradition for when they eventually have families of their own.

“Spending time partaking in everyday family leisure activities has been associated with greater emotional bonding within families.” [1]

2. Teaches the Value of Family

Taking the time to be with your family lets your children know they are valued—that spending time together is a priority. I know that in today’s world, both parents are busy as both usually working. What better way to let your children know they are loved than by carving out time each week to spend with them?

According to Marilyn Price-Mitchell, Ph.D., “words like honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage are core to centuries of religious, philosophical, and family beliefs. Use them and others to express and reinforce your family values. Teach children the behaviors that flow from these principles. Use quotes to ignite meaningful dinner conversations and encourage kids to talk about these values.” [2]

3. Enhances Mental Well-Being

Spending that quality time together gives your children a safe platform in which to express themselves, ask questions about things that are bothering them, or talk about their day and things they’ve learned. I know that my 9-year old granddaughter can’t wait until it’s her turn to talk about her day. She usually goes on and on and has to be stopped to give everyone else a chance to talk about their goings-on.

“Research shows the quality of family relationships is more important than their size or composition. Whoever the family is made up of, they can build strong, positive relationships that promote wellbeing and support children and young people’s mental health.” [3]

For children, having the opportunity to seek advice from parents they trust—as well as being able to have a sounding board and help with problem-solving—is priceless. In addition, being able to voice their opinions and be heard—and to feel like what they have to say matters—is an esteem-builder . All of these can have a very impactful positive effect on their well-being.

4. Helps the Child Feel Loved

How do you think a child feels knowing their parents want to spend time with them—talking, sharing experiences, playing games, listening to them? It will make them feel as though they are important, and a child that feels important is happier and more apt to thrive. Setting aside chores or work to spend time with your children demonstrates that they’re essential—that they matter. What a gift to give your child!

“If a child has your undivided attention, it signals that they are loved and important to you. This can be further nurtured by experiencing joyful activities together, as it demonstrates that you want to spend time with your children over and above all of the daily demands.” [4]

5. Creates a Safe Environment

If you regularly spend time with your children, you are also creating an atmosphere of trust. The more trust they have, the more likely they are to share with you what’s going on in their world. As they get older, you’re going to want to know. Negative influences can show up at any time, but if you’ve always been there for your child, they are more apt to come to you and ask for your advice.

Spending time together generates familiarity and feelings of being supported. When a child feels safe and comfortable , they’re more likely to open up. This is one way to get to know your child and know what’s on their minds. Are they okay? Do they need your guidance? If so, how?

6. Reduces Stress

This is significant. We all suffer from stress at one point or another in our lives. Spending time with family helps alleviate that stress. It’s an opportunity to talk things out, get feedback, and maybe brainstorm for a solution to the problem that is causing the stress.

According to Brandy Drzymkowski, “During the holidays, your closest five people probably shifts to family and friends. You may even get to see loved ones who live far away. Good news! This can actually help lower your stress levels. Studies show ‘face-to-face interaction…counteracts the body’s defensive ‘fight-or-flight’ response.’ In other words, quality time spent with loved ones is nature’s stress reliever.” [5]

So, now that you know some of the benefits, what are some ideas for making family time happen?

How to Make Family Time Happen

Here are four things you can do to make family time happen and spend more time with them.

1. Family Dinners

This, as I said above, is a wonderful way to spend time together. While you’re having dinner, you have the chance to discuss things that are going on in your lives—the ups, the downs, and everywhere in between. It’s like having a buffer against life’s challenges.

Aside from that, eating dinner together has many additional benefits. Studies have shown that for kids who eat regularly with their families, there is less risk of substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and depression. [6]

“Our belief in the ‘magic’ of family dinners is grounded in research on the physical, mental and emotional benefits of regular family meals.” It further states, “We recommend combining food, fun and conversation at mealtimes because those three ingredients are the recipe for a warm, positive family dinner—the type of environment that makes these scientifically proven benefits possible.” [7]

According to Parenting NI, “children and adolescents who spend more time with their parents are less likely to get involved in risky behavior. According to studies done by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse via Arizona State University, teens who have infrequent family dinners are twice as likely to use tobacco, nearly twice as likely to use alcohol and one and a half times more likely to use marijuana.” [8]

As you can see, there are multiple benefits to spending time with each other routinely. You can’t go wrong with this family activity.

2.  Regular Movie Nights

This is another fun event, although, from personal experience, I have to caution that choosing a movie that everyone wants to see is not easy. So, give yourselves plenty of time so you don’t spend two hours searching for a movie, and then end up watching no movie at all because the night is practically over. Try and choose a movie before the day, if possible.

Afterward, open it up for discussion. Ask questions pertinent to the movie. What do you think of ABC? Should they have done that? Would you have done something differently? There are so many questions you can ask to spark a conversation and keep the night going.

3. Game Night

This is another occasion for great fun. If you have a competitive spirit, it makes it even more fun. There are numerous games out there—Balderdash, Pictionary, Apples to Apples, Charades, to name a few—that can create fun havoc. All I can say is, on game nights, don’t take yourself too seriously. It’s okay if you lose the game. The fun is in being together, laughing, debating, and having a good time.

In addition, “Playing board games is great for children for many reasons besides the obvious; it’s fun to play games! Age appropriate games can help children to think strategically, solve problems creatively, work on pattern recognition and build simple math skills. They also help children develop social skills such as following rules, taking turns, and graceful winning or losing. Additionally, a family game night provides an opportunity for children to bond with siblings, parents and family members as well as peers. It can promote tradition building and establish a fun routine.” [9]

So, go find your family a game and start having fun!

4. Sharing a Hobby

If you and one of your kids like to do the same things, do it more often. For example, my oldest son and his teenage son go on long bike rides together on the weekends. Not only do they get to exercise, but they also get to talk and look at beautiful sceneries. They’ve also incorporated cooking into their routine. They plan the meal, shop, and prepare—activities that bring them closer together.

Sharing a hobby is a great way to bring family members together. It bonds people in amazing ways. According to Alison Ratner Mayer, LICSW, “One of the easiest and most important ways to build a child’s self-esteem is to spend time with them doing something not only that they enjoy but something that you also enjoy. There is a special magic that happens between a parent and a child when they share a mutually beloved activity. It sends the message to the child that their parents are having fun, true, honest, real fun, with them.” [10]

Final Thoughts

Spending time with the family is an investment. It is an investment in the happiness, well-being, and security of that system. It can also serve as a way to break out of the daily rut and the constant worldly demands, while at the same time, building a strong family unit.

Even though it isn’t always easy to find the time, finding the time is key to staying close and to providing and receiving love and support. There is no greater gift than the gift of time. That’s what we all seem to be missing nowadays. So, in giving that gift consistently, everyone feels loved and appreciated.

The family that takes the time to interact regularly is typically happy. They know they are part of a tribe, and that’s essential in today’s chaotic world. To know that there are people whom you can count on—people who will have your back in times of need—is invaluable.

Now, go and plan something plan with your family, if you haven’t already.

IELTS Writing Task 2 – Spend Free Time With Families

IELTS Writing Task 2 – Spend Free Time With Families

Table of Contents

Some people think that young people should spend free time with families instead of outside entertainment, while others disagree. Discuss both views and give your opinion.(社会)

Introduction

It is often argued that young people should spend their leisure time with their family, while others suggest that they are better off joining activities outside the family circle. In my opinion, I believe that there should be a decent amount of time shared with the family and, of course, personal space.

Some argue that our families grow older, or parents eventually age, so it is ideal to spend time with these people, especially parents and children. As they grow older, they may follow different paths, leading to missed opportunities for bonding. Therefore, spending time together with the family, like traveling or having dinner together when there are no time constraints, is important.

However, those who disagree tend to focus on privacy and the freedom to be independent. Some people have spent their entire lives with their families and now want to feel independent and do their own thing. If they have leisure time or free time, they prefer to pursue their own interests, seeking a sense of liberation, especially those who have experienced a toxic family environment.

In my opinion, it is better to strike a balance between spending time with one’s family and enjoying personal space outside. This approach is the healthiest, as spending time with family fosters deeper emotional bonds and support while exploring activities outside the family circle allows for personal growth, learning new things, and a sense of freedom, which is highly important as we grow older. Both aspects should coexist, creating a well-rounded life.

In conclusion, the choice of where to spend one’s free time should not be one-sided. There should be a balance between spending time with family and activities outside the family circle. This balance contributes to a healthy and fulfilling life.

This type of essay typically involves presenting two opposing views and then providing your own opinion. One common mistake is making your opinion in the thesis statement, which is not ideal. The thesis statement should focus on the summary of your essay, and your opinion should be presented separately. To aim for a score higher than 7, it’s crucial to use paragraphs effectively.

In this type of prompt, it’s recommended to structure your essay with at least three body paragraphs. The first body paragraph should present view 1, the second should present view 2. Finally, the final body paragraph should express your own opinion. This organized approach helps create a well-structured and coherent essay.

Why It’s Important to Spend More Time with Friends and Family

Productivity 10/22/2019

While alone time is important for creativity and inspiration, spending quality time with friends and family is just as important.

Research shows that spending time with friends and family makes a big difference when it comes to happiness. Social time is especially important for happiness, even for introverts. Studies have proven that the amount of time spent with friends and family goes a long way towards boosting happiness – even more so than an increased income!

Spending time with family and friends can even help you cope with stress. As Harvard happiness expert, Daniel Gilbert explains : “We are happy when we have family, we are happy when we have friends and almost all the other things we think make us happy are actually just ways of getting more family and friends.” So while money can’t buy you happiness, spending time with the ones you love, is always a good investment!

Spending time with family is one of the best ways to create memorable experiences. Nothing can replace the time you spend with your family. This is especially true if you have children. With younger children, there’s a good chance that you already spend a lot of time with them. With older children and teenagers who may prefer to spend time with their friends, it can be more difficult to carve out family time.

If you don’t know where to start, consider starting small: dinner at the table or a board game in the evening. If games aren’t your family’s idea of a good time, try outside activities – perhaps a walk to the park. Even projects around the house can be a great way to get everyone involved and working towards a goal. Encourage your family to spend time together by looking out for opportunities to do things that everyone would be interested in. It may be a challenge at first, but soon it will become second nature.

Spend Time with Friends

As we get older and life gets faster, the time we once had for our friends seems to diminish. You might not notice it at first, but soon your coffee dates are being replaced by school meetings. Your carefree mornings are busy and rushed, and the phone calls you used to make daily to chat with your best friend are slowly turning into every other week (or month!) catch-up calls. Fitting in time for friends is sadly one of the first things to go when life gets busy, and before you know it – you hardly know the person you used to call your best friend.

This fact is though, that while this is tragic, it’s also preventable! Spending time with friends is one of the few pleasures in life that can cost you very little, but reward you substantially. It is also proven to be one of the best ways to combat stress. Spending time with your friends can help melt away the cares of the world and leave you a better person all around.

Carve out time for your friends, by scheduling it in. One way to do this successfully is to find common goals you both might have and spend your time together working on reaching those goals – accomplishing two things at the same time and making it easier to find time to spend with friends. An example would be working out together, walking the pets together, trying new things together, or scheduling the kids’ play dates with each other. You could also look out for special occasions to spend time with each other. These events don’t have to be huge social events. It could be as simple as inviting friends over to watch the Super Bowl or having your spouse look after the kids so you can go out for coffee.

Additional Benefits of Spending Time With Friends and Family

Some health benefits of maintaining a healthy quality time with your friends and family include:

Spending time with family and friends relieves stress: According to a study by Carnegie Mellon University, individuals who spend more time with family and friends tend to have better coping mechanisms when it comes to handling stress . They tend to use their social group as a stress buffer, allowing them to communicate their stress instead of seeking negative coping mechanisms like alcohol and tobacco.

Helps your overall well-being: Social groups provide emotional support, which helps you feel better about yourself. In fact, people who view their friends and family as supportive tend to have a greater feeling of meaning in life and a stronger sense of purpose than those who did not.

It’s great for heart health: Stress can encourage the development of inflammation in the arteries, which is a precursor to clogged arteries. A study found that when individuals have the support of family and friends, they actually have a lower pulse and blood pressure which, in time, helps to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Now go call a friend or family member!

Spending more time with your friends and family is beneficial to your mental wellbeing, as well as your relationships. With friends and family, your good times are better, and your sorrows are shared – so don’t overlook this important area in life!

How Spending Quality Time Can Really Strengthen Families

There can be significant benefits to shared family activities and traditions..

  • Take our ADHD Test
  • Find a child or adolescent therapist near me

When children are growing up, what they see in their families is what they tend to consider normal. Whether a child grows up in a large home or a small apartment, a large family or a home with a single parent, they tend to accept their situation because that is all they’ve known.

My family did not own a color television during my entire childhood . During those years we had a small, 12-inch black-and-white television. Did I feel deprived that I didn’t have a larger TV, or that it wasn’t in color? I did not, because to me this small television was just right. It was the only TV we had in our home and as such, I was satisfied to watch shows on it and didn’t worry about it having a small screen and black and white images. It was just our TV and it worked fine.

The point here is that I accepted what we had and was comfortable with it. When children are growing up, they just know what is shown to them. That means family traditions and other activities are generally seen as just normal. If a family eats dinner together, goes to religious services together, or spends time talking with each other, that’s what the child absorbs and internalizes.

More and more, our family traditions are shrinking as we move toward a more isolated society. Social norms seem to be eroding at an ever-faster pace. How many families no longer share meals around the dinner table, instead opting to watch TV or text friends on their phones? How many families no longer sit and talk? This tends to isolate and disconnect family members from each other. It also stops families from communicating and catching up on each other’s lives.

It is this emotional separation that can lead to a lack of connectedness. This in turn can become internalized in children seen as normal. Then when they grow up, they take it with them into their own families and this lack of family connectedness becomes normalized in the society.

For those of us who grew up in a household where families shared meals together and spent time talking with each other, chances are we are passing along those traditions to our own families. The problem is, children today often want to spend their time in front of screens rather than people. Cell phones, video games, computers, and other attention -grabbing devices often mean parents get resistance to traditional family togetherness time. This pressure can lead to parents giving in and letting children do what they want rather than fight with them over sitting at the dinner table.

This creates a new normal that no longer values the idea of families and the society at large, connecting with each other. We are already a society that has fewer and fewer things that are shared societal experiences. While this year things have changed due to the pandemic, events like the Super Bowl have for decades created shared experiences between generations. Unfortunately, events like this are becoming fewer and fewer in their number. Life is increasingly becoming more and more solitary, with people staring at screens rather than sharing experiences with each other.

Children are not the only ones who become lost in their own computerized world. Parents also spend much of their day on their computers or smartphones. Remember, that with each year discussing things verbally gets pushed further and further into the past and is often replaced with texts and emojis. While there is nothing wrong with technology and new ways of communication, there is something that is being lost every time we separate ourselves from the people in our lives. Family and community traditions are important, not just for the current shared experiences, but for the future as well. Since children internalize their experiences which define what they feel is“normal,” that means generations to come may not know what it’s like to sit together around the dinner table and truly connect as a family. We may be trading that connectedness for the isolation of the computer screen.

That is why it is so important that parents and caregivers create boundaries of behavior that help to keep family traditions alive. If you remember the shared experiences you had with your parents and grandparents you know the important bonding that took place during those times. The warmth and love you felt belonging to something bigger than yourself. The security of knowing you were part of a supportive family that cared for you. That is what family traditions give us, the closeness and connectedness of truly having people that hear us and care about us. It is this shared experience that brings people closer together and is well worth preserving.

Family Time: Why Spending Time with Family is Important

Table of Contents

Family time, to build a stronger bond with your family, to make time to talk and listen, to teach your children important lessons of life, to show affection, appreciation, and encouragement, to instill family values in your children, to inculcate family rituals and traditions, to accept the differences in each person, to keep in touch with friends and relatives, to share the chores, to help and connect better with your children, wrapping it up.

“ You have a lifetime to work, but children are only young once. ” ~Polish Proverb

Do you ever wonder why family time is important?

Yes, time is so important – in fact, time is money, as we’re often reminded when we set out to seek our livelihood as parents.

But family time? Is this meaningful or serve any purpose? Isn’t it just a waste of time because you could probably earn a few grand more putting that time to work!

I know you do not actually think like that and I’ve exaggerated it a bit.

May be you do plan to spend time with your family but things do not always go as per the plans. But you do it all for the family – to earn and provide for the family.

You give money and things to your family. But what does your family need the most?

For your kids, your time spent with them is life precious jewels that embed in their memories forever.

The concept of “family” has changed a great deal in recent times, and there are now various forms of families and different styles of parenting. However, one thing remains certain; whatever the term “family” may mean to you, it is of utmost importance in your child’s life.

The family where your child grows up has a big influence on how he or she deals with relationships, copes with situations, and learns about living life. It’s only possible if you proactively be a part of the family.

And for that to happen, you need to block out family time in your schedule.

Family time is also important because if children don’t get the required attention, they might do something that could get them in trouble.

Some stay-at-home parents or moms may think that they are somehow “better” than other parents or moms, who stay away from home for most of the time. This is a misconception.

We often think that it’s all about quantity when it comes to the time we spend with our kids, whereas it is the quality time that we need to give our family and children . Your kids care less about the hours you spend with them, than how you spend your time with them.

As your children get older and become teenagers, it becomes tougher to spend family time with them. It’s mainly because life keeps you busy and your children reach a stage where their friends are the main priority.

As a parent, you have to be willing to go down to their level and enter their world. Sometimes you have to be creative or let them decide what they want to do as a family. But never give up on spending family time with your teens , and they may appreciate it more than what they express.

According to studies, healthy families make family time for talking and listening, accepting differences, showing affection and encouragement, sharing chores and decision making, keeping in touch, and making time for each other.

Why Family Time is Important

For those who still doubt the importance of family time , mentioned below are a few points to put things in better perspective. Here are 10 reasons why family time is important:

The main reason why family time is important is because you need to develop ties and bond with your family. Often kids decide to join gangs or groups because they welcome them in, to become a part of their family.

Your kids need a sense of belonging and security, as they need to feel they have someone they can turn and look up to, for anything. Spending family time together ensures that a deep, strong, family bond develops.

Another good reason of spending time with family directly relates to the need to share, talk, and listen to each other as a family.

Parents often think that it would be tough to talk to their children, who think differently from grown-ups. However, parents tend to forget their own time, as how it was for them when they were young! The people you liked were mostly those who listened to what you had to say, similarly, you need to listen to what your children have to say. Listening doesn’t mean only hearing the words your child is saying, but also feeling what your child is trying to convey.

You need to listen without jumping in with answers, criticizing, or giving your own view points. You need to show that you are involved in the conversation, by stopping all other work you are doing, and just listen to them. Talk directly to your kids, especially teenagers, about alcohol and drugs, and set a good example yourself.

If you do not teach children at home, they will learn it elsewhere. As a parent, would you want your children to learn life’s important lessons by undergoing pain, or going the wrong way?

Although children have to learn a few things on their own, it’s important to have family time for discussions, where you can put forth problems or situations in front of them, and then talk about them with your children, seek their opinion, and discuss on the matter. This would help them understand the situations of life in a better way.

Family time is important so that everyone in the family has a way of showing affection to each other, maybe by giving hugs, holding hands, being thoughtful and kind. According to studies, teenagers who remember being praised, hugged, or kissed are likely to do better at school than those who don’t have this experience.

You need to take out that quality family time to ask what each family member has done in the day, and show interest in each other’s lives. People find it very easy to criticize than praise. So make an effort to think about the positive in each person and tell your child what goodness you have noticed, besides teaching them these values.

Instilling family values in children is of great significance nowadays, so that they are not misled by the number of divorces on the rise.

Children mostly imitate the behavior you show towards them. If you are an absent parent, they will be the same to their children in the future. Instead, they often portray worse behaviors than they see.

Thus, spending family time together will build a sense of worth and instill positive family values in your children.

Daily rituals or the little things that you do daily and on special occasions, helps to build a sense of belonging, contentedness, and inner security within the family. Daily rituals like the way you greet each other, or say goodbye, what you do at mealtimes or bedtimes, can all be something to share within your family time.

Families benefit from coming together to celebrate occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or festivals like Christmas, etc., where they learn the traditions about what happens at these times.

Family time is essential to appreciate, encourage, and value the differences in each family member, knowing that everyone is special in their own way. Allow each family member to be excited about their personal interests, and show respect and tolerance towards them.

Don’t pressurize your family members to be like you, or hide their feelings and differences. Instead, let them feel proud to be themselves.

As we live in a society, we do need to spend time among our family as well as interact with friends and relatives. Knowing that there are people outside the family to turn to in a crisis can make a difference to your child’s happiness. It also increases the chances of them making good friends later in life.

Family time is important to teach younger children, by giving them chance to do things for themselves, under your supervision. Use adult power wisely, and keep control through humor and encouragement, not with punishments or threats.

By spending time with family together, a very special relationship of trust and intimacy develops that helps build a healthy family. Especially when children have a real say in what happens and where everyone feels their views are heard.

One of the most overlooked aspects of education today is parental involvement. Many parents don’t realize the importance of family time and how important it is to involve themselves in their children’s learning.

All parents and family members need to find time and make the effort. Research shows that when parents involve themselves in the family, their children:

  • Get superior grades and test scores.
  • Graduate from high school at higher rates.
  • Are most likely to go on to higher education.
  • Have more positive attitudes and behave better.

Spending time with family can be like reading a bedtime story to your kids, checking their homework , getting involved in PTA, discussing your child’s progress with teachers, or anything related also to their academic progress. Or it can be as simple as asking your children, how was their day at school, but ask every day.

So, the importance of family and why you should spend quality time with family doesn’t remain a question anymore. Now you know it helps create a sense of belonging, where you can share ideas, values, and beliefs.

You need to find some ways to spend time together as a family group , and make fun times together. For example, you could share meals together without the distraction of television or cell phones, share information, and learn about what is happening in each other lives. You could play cards, games or sports, take holidays together, go camping, watch movies, or share hobbies.

You will build a stronger family unit by spending more time together, and your family will stick together through rough times, besides enjoying the fun times together.

Show loyalty to your family, stick up for each other so that each person feels confident in the family’s support and pull together to form a united front to find solutions.

Children grow up and are gone before you realize it, so don’t waste the time you have now, and spend it with your family. Remember, that strong families are able to withstand setbacks and crisis with a positive attitude, shared values, and beliefs that help them cope with challenges.

Over to You –

Now that you know why family time is important, how do you spend time with your family? Do share your thoughts.

I like that you mentioned the importance of having family daily rituals or traditions. My wife loves going to baseball games with our kids all the time. I think we will try to make it a weekly tradition of going to a baseball game and spending time together!

I agree that children will try and do things that could get them in trouble if they don’t get the attention they need. I feel like parents should make family time a moment in which their kids can express themselves freely. Ideally this would be all the time but family time is a great place to start.

Yes, absolutely valuable content in maintaining the good family relationship. This is much needed in the hard situation like pandemic and also, lockdown and restrictions have gave some free time to spend with our family at home. Really loved your writing.

I like how you said that family time can help foster a sense of belonging and security in addition to aiding the development of a strong family bond. My husband and I both agree that our three kids have been spending too much time with electronics for the last few months. Reading your article made me excited to start researching some local things to do together as a family!

The thing is that many people in life were very lucky to find their loved ones and have a family that many others were never that lucky at all when it came to finding love. So there is the problem right there for many of us single people since a great deal of us aren’t single by choice to begin with. Being married has a lot of advantages since you’re always together wherever you go, and you will never be alone. Many single people like us have a lot of disadvantages since wherever we go which we will always be alone. I definitely would’ve been married along time ago had i met the right good woman from the very beginning, and i am sure that many other men that are still single would certainly agree with me as well.

Hi Harleena, When I think about my mother all I can think of is the quality time she spent with me and my brother Keith. She would bake a cake and one would get the spoon afterward while the other would get the bowl to lick clean. Mostly I recall her reading us books. She was really good at putting you there in the story. She gave us a lot but now that she’s gone all I can remember is the time she gave us. Yesterday I played basketball with my son and grandson. And all the guys on the court couldn’t believe I was still out there playing at 51 years old! But they don’t know it’s not about how well I can play anymore, it’s about spending time with family. My grandson love telling his friends that he balled with his father and grandfather..lol That something he will never forget. Nice reminder.

When I was a kid I don’t remember that we have family time together, after I ask to speak during our couples retreat this year about FAMILY TIME on my research on the net I was guided on your blog. Many for Thank it. On my research I know how other family spend their family time. And this is also the time I know that eating lunch together is a family time because no one told us, we never go together as a family in church in fact my father is very religious we never go together to any special place, but rather we stay at home after our chores our father said its better to study our lesson than stay outside and play with my friends, no bed time stories, that is why I have no idea of having family time. This grieving thoughts end after I finished elementary school. During my high school days I was sent to my relatives in the city to study high school and work as a working students and you know Harleena that’s the time I play with kids not in my age ( age 6 to age 12 ) its happiest moment in my life. Now I’m 54 years old and having a family ( 2 boys and a girl ) Last night we have a meeting with my kids that we should have family time and I’m so happy they agree our schedule every last Sunday after church I’m impassioned waiting this 24th of May thank you for your blog and your website I ask you permission that this article to be used as my material in our coming events. I agree that children are only young once so I need to make quality time with them. Being a father to my children I was task to do my duty to them. Thanks again

In our church we have a custom that once a week we should have something we call Family Hour. Well it is not limited to once a week, it can be done as much as once a day if desired. It is the time where a family is together and all of its members are present to hear advice that officers of our church distribute to every family unit.

It is a time where we can share stories of our day and our experiences and we can hear advice from our family. Well it varies according to the family’s preference. You can have it when you eat together, or you can have it outside like an outing. What matters is that you hear the advice from the church officers and you manage to have fun.

Glad you could resonate with the post John!

Sounds like a wonderful idea to have a family hour, whether it’s at home or as you mentioned as a custom in the church. I guess all that matters is that you make some time to spend with your family and connect with one another – isn’t it?

Yes, you can seek advice from those at the church if you have a family hour there, or listen to one another when you are together at home, or even take advice from the elders in your family.

Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

This is one thing very close to my heart!

My parents made sure that no matter how busy we are – classes, sports, friends or anything – dinner should be family time. And yes, it gives opportunity for many things – to share the whole day, to bond over food and just to connect with family. That time was very important for each one of us, serious issues were discussed, a lot of fun was had and just a wonderful way to end the day!

Also we as children could constantly get the message that we are always connected with our parents and we can sit together and discuss just anything under the sun. The appreciation, affection and encouragement highlights is something that resonates with me!

This is a wonderful post! 🙂

Glad it’s close to your heart Hajra!

It’s nice to learn the wonderful things your parents instilled so rightly in you, as these very lessons are what you are going to carry down the line when you have your kids and a family.

Similarly, my parents ensured that no matter what we did during the day or where we were- meal times were always on the dinner table- together. And we as kids always loved that, as it was one sure place to be heard and listened to! My younger sister was always the chatter box of the family and ended her meals much after us, keeping us entertained all through our meals 🙂

You are absolutely right about sharing anything we ever wanted as kids, with our parents. And this happened because we were taught to have a special family time together where we were given the freedom to talk about anything we wished- without holding back. I do consider myself lucky there to have that freedom of speech, which I have seen many people don’t possess or weren’t taught.

Family time has always been of utmost importance to me, may be because I was taught it’s importance when I was young and have wonderful memories about it.

Thanks so much for adding more value to the post 🙂

Young ones do talk a lot eh? I am the youngest in three sisters and somehow I was the one talking the most on the dinner table! 🙂 The family time can have so much effect on how a kid develops and grows with the knwledge of having a family bond strengthened everyday!

They sure do, and in you case too- so that just proves it! 🙂

Spending a few minutes of quality family time is the key factor where the overall development and growth of your kids is concerned. And the dinner table, or sitting on the couch, or just being together anywhere are great ways to build on that special bond of togetherness.

Thanks for adding to the conversation. 🙂

Harleena – This is an interesting topic and the way you have explained it out here is awesome.

I always try to make that balance between my work life and my family time, sometimes it proves to be difficult, but the days when I am not able to spend quality time with my daughter and wife are the days I repent later.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the same.

Glad you liked the post Praveen!

I have always felt the need for spending quality time with my family, thus this post! I guess most of us who are working all the time, do find it tough to take out the much needed family time we would want to take out, due to our work. But we do need to do so by making a deliberate effort to connect with them, even if its a few minutes of quality time. Life is so short and we need to live it to the fullest by not forgetting to connect with who are close to us.

Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

I agree that children are only young once so we need to make quality time with them top priority. Being near our children and actually engaging with them are two different things. I make it a point to teach my son new things often and also instill values in him.

That is absolutely true Justin!

As parents we need to devote quality family time with them, not just spend time doing nothing. We need to connect with them and feel a little of what they are under going to understand them better, that is what i would really call spending family time with meaning.

Nice to learn that you do make that sincere effort to spend time with your son and make it a point to teach things or instill values in them. I guess even a little bit of effort from our side goes a long way.

Glad you found the post useful and could relate to it Daniel!

Yes, the time once lost can never be found again, and striking the right balance between work and family is what is needed!

Thanks for your comment, and do visit the blog again 🙂

This is very true….!! I always believed to maintain a proper balance between home and office….Our family members are also as equally important for us as our JOB is…!! Give ample time to your family….!! Thanks for driving our concern to this valuable topic… 🙂

Keep it up. 🙂

Very true Nancy!

Children are the first ones to feel the absence of a parent, though they may not be able to voice it often, but their actions speak louder than words! Thanks for commenting 🙂

I love your blog! You made some really important points here! Alison Astair

Glad you liked the post and could relate to it! I totally agree that we do need to create the right balance between home and office or else you miss out a lot in life- as the lost time never returns.

Thanks for visiting my blog Haddock, and do visit again for more stuff!

So true. I always believed in striking a proper balance betwen home and office. One should not overshadow the other.

And I like that Polish Proverb

Welcome to my family blog Deeone!

Glad you liked the post and could relate to it. Yes, we all go through ups and downs in our lives, some people have the best of everything, while for others it's a different story.

Time waits for no one, and it is so true that once it passes by- there is nothing left, as no matter how hard you try- you cannot get back that time again.

Thanks for sharing your story, and am sure whenever you do have kids, you would take that extra care and attention to devote the maximum time with them.

Thanks so much for your valuable comment!

Wow! This was awesome Harleena!

I agree 101% on the importance of family time. I grew up in an environment where I didn't have it that much, and even today I can see the effects the lack of it had on my life.

Each of your points were valid and well explained as to why that time is so important. What so many people don't realize is once that time is gone, you can never get it back. It's gone forever.

I know more now than ever that I am one of the lucky cases. Since I didn't receive that affection from my mother and father per say, my mother was a bit better than my dad; but it was my grandmother who instilled in me the importance of family time, as well as offered that needed time to me.

My partner and I don't have any kids in our household as of yet, but we both wish to do so one day. I also think that when that day comes we both will definitely make time for our kids.

Awesome post! Loved it. It's definitely a must share! Thank you for sharing it with me. 🙂

Family is a beautiful part of one’s life, one cannot move forward in a career or in any phase without the support of family. As kids, we don’t acknowledge the time spent with the family but as we grow up we understand the importance of the time we spend with the family. I am really grateful that at the right time I acknowledged the fact that it is equally important to give time to my family. Since the time I have realized the importance of family I take time from my busy schedule and try to spend time with my family as much as I can. I also make sure that I make others realize the importance of family and all my siblings get together.

  Sample Answer 2:- Introduction

I have a big joint family, and having such a big family is a blessing. Many people believe that I am telling lies, but talking deeply about it with them, makes them understand the true story. I have my uncle, aunt, grandfather, and grandmother living with me, my siblings, and my parents. I have never felt alone when I am at home because I have one or the other family member to talk to. This is one of the main reasons why I believe that living in a joint family is a blessing. To keep up our great bond, we organize games weekly. We respect each other’s personal life, hence we organize it on Sunday so that every member is available and is free to play.

spend leisure time with family essay

Hi,

You have written excellent essay and covered everything. Here are very few suggestions that can be added to improve some marks as per examiner's expectation.

1. You may add 2-3 conditional sentences (for example: if, although, even)

2. Complex sentences are also required in essay task 2 such as "not only but also" more and more type)

I am not sure if you already received your desired result and i am late to reply you!

Thanks,
Jul 07, 2013

5 paragraphs are good for an argumentative essay-

Restate the question but use different wording, AND give an idea of YOUR opinion.

Agree with the question statement and give reasons-support.

Show why the "other" opinion has advantages.

Show why YOUR opinion is the RIGHT one- use examples etc

Conclusion- Restate the argument and once again give your opinion.

These type essays work simply in 3 parts:-

Tell the reader what you are going to say

Tell it

: State what you have just said.

Leisure time is necessary for people after working and studying hard, and there are various recreation activities to do based on oneself. Many people support the methods helping the mind get better, while others endorse the thinking to rest in free time, but it is more effective if we participate in outside activities.

People can indeed improve their ability by practicing pursuits improving the mind. Doing the word puzzles helps us raise logical thinking and solve problems at work more effectively. On the other hand, we can expand our knowledge and absorb more information from books, and mental health will be better.

Standing at the other view, putting the mind at rest by enjoying media entertainment, people reduce the stress. After a long day at work or school, we usually feel tired and need to relax. There are many channels such as watching films, listening to music and playing games, our mind will balance again.

However, the two sorts of pursuits above have some disadvantages, such as we feel more stressed when practicing the mind or being not conscious of using entertaining electronic methods, we should take outdoor actions. When enjoying outside events, for instance, doing exercise or playing sports bring about our physical health will be better, the mind will be refreshed and having energies for new works.

In summary, doing activities, improving our mind in leisure time will enhance our thinking but perhaps, also lead to feeling more stressed. Meanwhile, laying the mind to rest helping us reduce work pressure; however, we can feel graver. Personally, participating in outside pursuits is suitable for both mental and physical health.

Pressure at Work and Time to Relax

by Mahesh Senadheera (Sri Lanka)

Many people think that nowadays people are being subjected to more and more pressure in their work and thus are having less and less time to relax. What is your opinion? yes, it is true that people are having less time to relax as they are subjected to more pressure in their work. it has been the routine of the average man to wake up early in the morning, to leave the home for work, to work to dusk and return home late night. Thus it is reasonable to say that people are being subjected to pressure and they have no time even to dream of relax. Due to the distance of the working place, a number of people find it difficult to reach there on time. So it is customory for them to leave the home early in the morning. To finish the daily course of the duty, they work as machines. Very often they fail to complete the duty of the day. The result is the amount of work on his shoulder is graduly climbing up. Consequently, intense of pressure is going up. Whether he is a government or prviate employ, this is the common situation. As a result, he has been deprived of his time to relax an refresh. On the other hand, people in this ultra modern generation are engaging in a very hectic life style because of their personal needs. They have been helpless in the management of their time. Load of the work, duty of the personal and the social life is pressurizing them moment by moment. Unwillingly, duty of the family and children become agrave problem if they do the work for living properly and vice versa. It leaves them only pressure and stress. According to the facts mentioned above, many people in the society today are being deprived of their time to be with the family members, to relax and refresh. Best Use of Leisure Time

by ahmet (istanbul)

Please provide me with some feedback on my Leisure Time Essay. Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that improve the mind, such as reading and doing word puzzles, other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time. Discuss both opinions and give your own opinion. Many people believe that it is significant using spare time for things that enhance the mind, for instance reading and doing word puzzles. the others think that it is vital to relax the mind during spare time. In my opinion, I agree that people should use leisure time for activities which improve the mind. On the one hand, some people have very exhausting job. Therefore, they would like to relax during leisure time, so they do not want to do anything within this time. They think they need to rest. Moreover, many people are lazy, for this reason they do not keen to do activities to improve the mind. For instance reading a book and doing Sudoku puzzles. On the other hand, many people have stressful job too, but they would like to enhance the mind. Therefore, they do many things within leisure time. Such as reading a novel, solving puzzles, doing exercises which are useful for improving the mind. I think that people who utilize spare time doing activities that boost the mind are more successful than others who love to use spare time for relaxing. Finally, in my opinion, people should use their leisure time to improve the mind. For this reason people should do anything which is useful for enhancing the mind. Moreover, I would argue that, people should hard working not to be idle. So they always doing something to be more successful. Furthermore, I think some activities are so relaxing while they improve the mind. Such as doing Sudoku puzzles. In conclusion, I agree that people should do activities that improve the mind during leisure time. Because, while that they are performing activities for improving the mind, the activities can contribute to job achievement. Moreover, I think, leisure time should be used effectively since it is so precious.

Good job!! needs some editing.

In regards to this essay, the most important thing you need to do is improve your introduction.

It does only need to be 2 or 3 sentences, but you have introduced the essay very poorly.

Grammar errors make it confusing and you don't seem to have a thesis.

nice essay, easily understandable to new learners and good sentence constriction
Dec 05, 2014

The content and structure of the body paragraphs and conclusion are ok. You have topic sentences, explain things with examples and answer the questions to a reasonable extent.

But you do have quite a few grammar issues you need to work on.

I can't point them all out so you would need someone to take a look for you so you know where you need to improve in this respect.

Hope the test went well at the weekend.

Work and Relaxation

by Long (hong kong )

Many people think that nowadays people are being subjected to more and more pressure in their work and thus are having less and less time to relax. What is your opinion? Leisure time is essential in people's lives especially in this busy world, the valuable leisure time is getting less. However, people have different views on how to utilise their time. Some suggest to have mind improving activities yet the others believe resting is better. This essay will discuss on both sides of arguments. Some people believe having brain stimulation by activities can help in children development. Young people usually learn academic knowledges from school. Other than traditional learning, reading novels or science fiction stimulate their imagination, having mini- games such as world puzzles, Sudoku can facilitate their logical thinking. Multiple players' activities also provide platform for building teamwork. people can fully utilise their recreational time in order to improve their intelligence, which is important to become competitive in this crucial society. However, on the other hand, there are some strongly assert that resting is fundamental for leisure purpose. Nowadays, working over 50 hours a week is commonly seen elsewhere. Therefore, having such brain demanding activities after work or study would be a big burden to the participants. Instead, activities such as exercising, listening to music or even taking a nap would help recharging brain by simply resting. It is obvious that our brains require adequate rest to function in optimal level, people can concentrate on their works or learning after relaxation. In my opinion, both sides have their meets. Resting is significant between working intervals, while mind improving games boost brain development. Hence, I suggest people should employ mind stimulating activities if mentally capable. if people who get fatigue from using brain, mild activities would be good options to recharge. Leisure Time and Study

by Orifjon (Tashkent)

In some countries young people have little leisure time and are under a lot of pressure to work hard on their studies. What do you think are the causes for this? What solutions can you suggest? From the perspective of history countries were divided into several levels according to their inner development and status. Nowadays current issue is still in trend. Basically, there are some countries where students study under pressure, not having time to relax or do some leisure activities. In this essay, major reasons and possible solutions will be outlined according to question above. In my modest opinion, the basis of current issue lies in deep roots of education system of discussing countries. More clearly, governments -when planning the system - were now aware of students, who will then have to study following the government's system. Pattern of education was schemed involving positive sides only for governments rather than students. Some countries, for instance, are strictly critisized in planning the system compressed in order to spend less budget of organisation. This is, obviously, the most frightening way of objection of humanity's civil rights. One possible approach can be found in altering the way governments look at future of their own. In other words, the fact that proves that young generation is government's main stick point in the future should agitate them. The second and the main reason, however, touches the field of schools, universities and other educational organisations. The difference between humankind and animals is only - human moral ability to fell and think. By this argument, students are not tend to feel moral help from educational institutions. 2/3 of all educational institutions forgot about "motivation", "inspiration" and "encouragement". In this cruel world all of humanity attempts to show his cruelty and violence. And from my strongest point of view, problem can be solved by encouraging students morally, to support and help by showing various ways that can withdraw out of harsh situations. Educational organisations should find out ways of innovative pedagogical methods. Only this way, problem of student pressure can be solved. By way of conclusion, I find it necessary to reaffirm my point on altering the way governments and educational organisations see their future, otherwise serious problems can occur in society of ours. *** What do you think of this Leisure Time Essay about studying? Why Is It Important to Spend Time Outdoors: Essay Introduction

Health effects of spending time outdoor: essay body, exercise & outdoor activities: essay body, mood & concentration benefits of outdoor activities: essay body, essay about outdoor activities: conclusion, works cited.

Do you like spending time in nature with family and friends? Then you will definitely enjoy writing an essay about outdoor activities! But why is it important to spend time outdoors? Essay example on this page has the answer: check it out!

Spending time outside the serenity one is used to have positive effects on the physical and the mental health. Research shows that spending leisure time in those activities not confined to your area improves both the physical and mental well-being.

Outdoor activities includes walking, fishing, running, playing, mountain hiking, biking, horseback riding, boating and fishing, kayaking, picnicking and swimming. It is also healthy to spend time in nature settings for example watching the rivers flowing, adventuring the forests and game parks (Sisson 1).

Research proves that engaging in outdoor activities is significant to the growth and development of the body and the mind. However, this can be achieved through other means like indoors, but with a lot of trouble and expenses (Komaroff 1)

Many people like serenity of spending leisure free time in nature so that they can reduce or eliminate the stress and fatigue of engaging in day-to-day activities. The natural scenery and fresh air outside have the positive effects for both adults and the kids. The overall quality of children’s life improves when they are actively engaged in outdoor activities.

Engaging in outdoor activities means that a person will get enough sunlight. Sunshine acts as a source of vitamin D. When the sunlight hits the skin, the process starts from the involvement of the liver and kidneys; this eventually results in the development of the biologically active form of the vitamin. Many other vitamins do not have powers to fight back the diseases as compared to the vitamin D that has been proved more powerful.

Research proves that vitamin D protects the body against serious diseases like cancer, heart failures, stroke and the diseases of the mind like depression more than other vitamins do. A good source of vitamin D is the exposure of the arms and legs to sunlight for ten to fifteen minutes. Age and the skin color affect the rate at which the skin receives Vitamin D from sunlight.

Older people above 65 years of age generate vitamin D four times the people in their twenties while the dark skinned people produce about half the levels of vitamin D in their blood compared to the white skinned people. Ultra Violet light is the one that generates vitamin D when in contact with the body. However, the UVB light might be blocked by the sunscreens (Komaroff 1).

Research shows that engaging in outdoor activities enables human beings especially children to get more exercise. Researchers from Britain argue that a child who engages in outdoor activities is double active than those engaging in indoor activities. This research was undertaken using machines that track the movement of 1,000 children throughout the day.

It is advisable that one engages in those activities that keep the body in motion for a good body exercise for example walking, hiking, biking, gardening, and cleaning up the yard among other vigorous activities. A good exercise is good for the growth and development of a child (Komaroff 2).

Research shows that human beings become happy if they exercise in outdoor activities. Natural light tends to boost people’s mood and the only place one can access natural light is by moving out of the enclosures. Physical activities relax and cheer up people. Spending time outdoors makes an individual more proactive, cheerful and initiates a happy mood.

Researchers call the practice of exercising the body in the presence of nature as the “green exercise”. Such exercises are significant to the growth and development of the mind. Researchers from England argue that engaging in a green exercise for at least five minutes improves self-esteem, enjoyment and mood (Komaroff 2). Outdoor activities have the mental benefits such as the overall stress reduction.

Thinking capacity also tends to improve through improvement of attention that enhances connectivity in the brain and allows people to have good focus. Workouts also give one an opportunity to be joyous (Sisson 2). Spending time outdoor improves concentration. Children with emotional and mental disorders tend to experience the feeling of depression, lack of concentration and are not hyperactive.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children causes lack of concentration when they are subjected to too much work indoors. Research shows that such children will have better focus and improved concentration if subjected to the outdoor activities. Studies show that children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) perform better in examinations after a scenery walk through a park than after an indoor walk in the neighborhood.

Other studies show that outdoor exercises have positive effects on children with ADHD. Adults who have a shorter span of concentration also experience this condition and engaging in outdoor activities may solve this (Komaroff 3). Spending time in an open natural setting drastically decreases the symptoms of ADHD, mental and behavioral disorders in children.

Workouts in a natural environment offer an emotional and behavioral release for the people with depression while the challenges faced during the adventure in outdoor activities help in regaining trust, self-confidence and improved self-esteem (Sisson 2).

Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh showed that patients with spinal surgery might heal faster when exposed to the natural light. When they are under medication, they tend to experience pain and stress. Another study reported that when a patient views outside through the window it has a positive impact on the healing process. This is due to the fresh air coming in from the window (Komaroff 3).

Other studies have also shown that, spending leisure time in nature decreases prevalence to diseases such as blood pressure, heart failure, and sympathetic nerve activity. The anti-cancer protein and natural killer cells increase over time to prevent the infection and the growth of the cancer cells.

Body exercises done outdoors in green and blue natural, water like swimming enhance the growth of such body protective cells. Studies have also proved that engaging in outdoor activities increases body energy, more positive hyperactivity, less depression, anger reduction, less confusion, and reduced stress as compared to the indoor workouts (Sisson 1).

Spending time outdoor means going outside the enclosed setting to a natural space where one gets enough time to adventure what is new in the natural setting. Researches proof that engaging in outdoor activities is beneficial for the growth and development of the physical and mental wellbeing of an individual. In children, spending time outdoor prevents the emotional and behavioral disorders.

A lot of research has been done to counter the claims that indoor activities play the same role as those by the outdoor activities in the physical and mental health of an individual such as the cost and the trouble associated with indoors. For a healthy living, both the children and the adults must be engaged in the outdoor activities in the natural setting such as rivers, mountains and forests.

Families For Life | 30 Ways to Spend More Time with Your Family

Most of us are caught up in a hectic whirlwind of activities which start on Monday morning, end on Sunday night and then begin all over again. Time slips by as we rush to complete urgent tasks which relate to juggling jobs, running the household, chauffeuring our children, our parents, relatives and spouses to work, school, appointments and commitments. Yet, we all acknowledge, that spending quality time together is the best way we have to show each other that we care and that our families are important.

Some families solve this problem by organising big family holidays together. This allows them to get away from the day-to-day distractions and interact by building new experiences together. However, whilst, this is a great option, daily habits can make a much bigger difference to your family relationships than “once-in-a-lifetime” events. In addition, specifically tailoring your daily interactions with different members of your family can be a very effective way to relate to them on a 1-on-1 basis.

We've created the 30 tips as individual images on our  Facebook Family Time Tips Album  which you can use to share with your loved ones.

Check out our first Facebook Live Chat on 27 May 2016  with our special guest, Minister for Social and Family Development, Tan Chuan-Jin, panellist includes Kelvin Ang of CheekieMonkies, FFL Council Chairman Ching Wei Hong and FFL Council Member Sarojini Padmanathan. The chat was moderated by Diana Ser and focuses on how families can spend time together in creative and fun ways whilst strengthening their family bonds.

Here are some ideas that can make spending time with your family simple, meaningful and a part of your daily life.

Create Time for Your Kids

spend leisure time with family essay

Spending time with younger children is easy because they so often want to be as much a part of our lives as possible!

1. Have Dinner

Make it a point to leave work or schedule work for later in the evening so that you can make it home in time to sit down to dinner together. Eating dinner as a family allows you to b e a part of their daily conversations and to answer any questions they may have come across during the day when you were apart.

2. Fix Things Together

Is the kitchen sink broken? Do you need to paint the study room wall? Children love to help fix things. To us, it may seem like a mundane task, but to most kids, it’s a wond erful chance to see what’s under the kitchen sink, to understand how a faucet works and just to cover an entire wall in paint. Fixing things together allows you to plan for the project and also gives you lots of time to interact.

3. After Dinner Walks

If you’ve already made time to have dinner with your kids, why not spend another 30 minutes going on a walk with them after dinner? In Singapore, this is the coolest and mos t pleasant time of the day. Once the table is cleared and the dishes are washed, go for a walk around your neighbourhood. Talk about the changes you see and what your children observ e around them as you go on these walks. The act of walking whilst you talk may actually make it easier for children to bring up difficult topics or problems they face because they ha ve something else (like walking) to focus on when they bring these subjects up.

4. Leave a Message

Children love surprises, so if you don’t have the time to see them in the morning before you leave for work, leave a short video or note for them to find. They will be thrilled to get a message from you and you will have had a chance to show that you are sorry you couldn’t spend the morning with them, but that you value it so much that you made an ef fort to leave them a surprise note or message.

5. Read Together

Reading to your children or even companionably reading books together for half an hour each night is a great way to spend time together. Choosing books to read and discussing them are ways to share ideas and values with your children.

6. Bring Your Child to School or Class

Make it a point to bring your child to school or to any extra classes they may have. Doing this regularly allows you to spend more time together. Make travel time, together time!

7. Plan a Monthly Excursion

Think of a new place to visit each month. Perhaps it’s a museum? A theme park or a water adventure park? Get your children to help you to plan the excursion.

8. Share Family Stories

Find time to share stories about your family’s history. Dig out your old photo albums and look through them with your children. Add new pictures to the family collection togeth er and make this a regular activity.

Connect with Your Teenagers

spend leisure time with family essay

As your children grow into their teenage years, spending time together becomes even more important, and at the same time, difficult. It takes a little more effort, but finding daily time for your teenagers is possible.

9. Conversations with Your Teen

Take the opportunity to talk to your teenager whilst you are travelling together. Whether you are travelling with your teenager on the bus, train or in the car, there usually isn’t much else to do except talk. So seize the chance and get your teenager to open up and share more with you about their lives!

10. Do Good

Teenagers are inspired to volunteer and to make a difference in the world around them. Find a cause which you both identify with and sign up together. Attend regularly, volunteer and find time for each other too.

11. Step into Your Teen’s World

Participate in an activity they are passionate about. Whether it happens to be cosplay or basketball or building model airplanes, talk to your teen about it. Find out if there is a way for you to be a part of it, or if that’s not possible, then listen to them and learn about it from them so you can talk about it and understand why they are so excited about their chosen activity.

12. Chat with Your Teen

Connect with your teen through chat functions on your phone. Even though they may not necessarily want to add you on social media, sending regular short, encouraging chat messages can keep you in touch with your teen just as effectively.

13. Get to Know Your Teen’s Friends

Teenagers are discovering the social world beyond their immediate family. They spend a lot of time with their friends, finding out who they are as individuals and learning how to socialise beyond the family. Try opening up your home and welcome your teen's friends to get to know them better.

14. Spend Time Each Day with Your Teen

Even if it is only 5 minutes a day, find a time which you can spend with your teen. Maybe you want to be around when they come home to say hello and to ask them how their day went. Or perhaps you make it a point to spend 5 minutes talking to them just before they go to bed and you wish each other goodnight. Find a way to have a specific and dedicated time each day for a short conversation. This way, if they ever feel that they need to speak with you about something important, they know that there is this time in the day when you will definitely be there for them.

Show Your Parents You Care

As our parents grow older and retire from their careers, they too need to know that we are there for them. With more time spent alone or at home, having family members reach out them becomes increasingly important for their emotional and mental well-being.

15. Say Hello

If you don’t live together, find time to call or text your parents regularly to say hello. Ask them how their day went. A few simple words can make a big difference.

16. Ask Your Kids to Give Grandpa and Grandma a Call

Have your children call their grandparents once in a while. Even if you visit each other often, a phone call from a grandchild is always special!

17. Eat Together Once a Week

Make time to visit and have a meal together every week. Depending on what your parents prefer, it could be at their home – only if your mum loves cooking, or it could be dinner out. The important thing is to spend some time together regularly.

18. Cook Your Family's Favourite Recipe Together

Getting together in the kitchen can be lots of fun for the young and old! Get hands-on and learn from your family's very own chef and be inspired to find out what makes the dish special to your family. Grab the opportunity to snap photos and video each step to capture those special moments.

19. Spend Dedicated Time Together

Whether it's a walk in the park on a Saturday morning, or accompanying your parents to the grocery store once a week, every effort to prioritise family time counts. Create an opportunity to do something exclusively together.

20. Learn Something New

Pick up a new hobby or activity together. Maybe you could join a tai chi or yoga class? Or pick up a new language together? Learning something new can open up new ways of communicating and bring interest and life back into your conversations with your parents.

21. Celebrate Family Traditions

Traditions are what keep the family and extended family closely knitted. Older family members usually have the most knowledge about how family traditions come about and the meaning behind them. Share these family traditions with the younger generation and set aside the time to follow these traditions together to create lasting memories.

Make Your Spouse Feel Special

In all our daily rush, we sometimes take the person closest to us for granted. Spend time with your spouse and let them know that they are special to you in every way.

22. Keep in Touch with Messages

Even when we are busy, a short note to let our spouses know that we are thinking about them and that we miss them will help to let them know that they are special and important to us.

23. Turn the Mobile Phone Off

Set your mobile phone to silent or airplane mode when you are having a meal together. Give your undivided attention to each other.

24. Take Up a New Hobby

Finding time to take up a new hobby together will mean that you will learn something together and interact with each other in new ways. Find something which you both like and set aside some time each week to pursue it.

25. Set Aside Time

Make time for each other every week. You don’t have to plan anything grand, just let each other know that you will not make any other commitments and then plan to spend that time doing something you both enjoy and which is only for yourselves. In other words, don’t spend that time queuing up to collect your daughter’s registered letter from the post office, spend it having coffee together instead! Don’t make couple time = chore time!

26. Have Breakfast Together

Start your day together! Even if it is a quick bite at the coffee shop on your way in to work, or perhaps 30 minutes at your dining table each morning, breakfast is a wonderful time to connect. Dinners are often a time when the entire family gets together, but breakfast can be a time for just the two of you.

27. Exercise Together

Some couples find that getting up half an hour early and going for a morning walk, or making time for a weekly jog in the park is a great way to achieve more. What better way is there for you to spend quality time with your spouse and improve your health at the same time!

Keep In Touch with Your Relatives

As modern families have grown smaller, so too have the number of relatives we each have. Keeping in touch and being there for each other have become more important as family ties have become rarer and more precious.

28. Create a Group Chat

Create a group chat with your extended family. Keeping in touch and knowing how everyone is doing becomes a lot easier when everyone is on the same conversational page. Now, when something important happens, you and your relatives need only reach out once to everyone. When you make it easier to know what is happening in each other’s lives, you make it easier to appreciate and understand each other.

29. Share a Meal Together

Organise a regular meal together. Perhaps this happens once a month or even once a quarter, but the important thing is to make sure that there are regular occasions when you see each other and spend time together.

30. Celebrate, Recognise and Appreciate Each Other

Keep track of important events such as family birthdays, job changes, retirements, anniversaries, engagements, graduations, births, and yes, deaths too. Recognise these important events and make time to attend them, organise celebrations for them and be there to support each other. Whilst being a part of the daily lives of your relatives would be difficult, if not intrusive, making sure that you remember milestone events is often appreciated and remembered.

Key Takeaways

Make spending time with your family something you do on a daily basis.

Understand that the type of time you spend should vary according to what each family member needs and is most comfortable with.

Pick 1 or 2 ways to spend time together and make sure that you commit to these on a long-term basis.

Some people believe that children should spend all their free time with their families. Others believe that this is unnecessary or even negative. Discuss the possible arguments on both sides, and say which side you personally support.

Support ideas with relevant, specific examples

Examples make your writing easier to understand by illustrating points more effectively.

Examples, if used properly, not only help you get higher marks for ‘Task Response’ but also for ‘Coherence’.

When giving examples it is best to put them after your main idea or topic sentence. They can be used in the middle of supporting sentences or they can be used to start a new sentence. There is no rule for where exactly to give examples in essays, logically they would come after your main idea/topic sentence or just after a supporting sentence.

Linking words for giving examples:

  • for example
  • for instance
  • to illustrate this
  • to give a clear example
  • to illustrate
  • take, for example

12 Best Ways of Spending Quality Time with Family

12 Best Ways of Spending Quality Time with Family

Why Spending Quality Time With Your Family Is More Important Than You Think?

How much time should be spent with your family, 12 ideas to maximize family time, what can be the effects of not spending quality time with your family, warning signs that you are not spending enough time with family.

All of us are so occupied in our lives and in chasing our dreams that we struggle to make time for our family. A family is the biggest asset that one could ask for, hence it is important to spend time with loved ones. No matter how busy you are, your family needs you, the same way you need them. Spending time with your family will help you bond and understand one another. If you want to know how does spending time with your family reduce stress, read on to find out!

“Spending quality time with your family is important” – we’ve heard this time and again. However, most people do not realise that the operative word here is ‘quality’, as opposed to ‘time’. You can spend hours on end with your family, but how you spend this time is what matters. In simple words, quality stumps quantity, again. Here are a few reasons why spending time with loved ones is important: –

1. To Strengthen the Bond

Spending good time with your family will help strengthen relationships with one another. Children especially, need to feel like they belong. This is a significant reason why children form groups and befriend each other at school. Adults too require a sense of belonging. This arises from the fact that we are all social beings. Spending time with your family will make every member feel like a part of something special. It also reduces stress as it makes you happy and contented to be with your loved ones.

2. To Inculcate Values

Children need to be nurtured and guided along the right path. Spending time with your family can help you teach values to your children. Children tend to imitate their elders. By not spending time with them, they, in turn, might end up doing the same with their children, which is why you need to spend quality time with them and have a good laugh. Make memories with your children because it will help them learn that little things matter.  Spending time with them will also give them the opportunity to learn values from you.

3. To Show Kids That They Matter

Your children need you. Not being around them will make them feel like they don’t matter to you. Children crave attention, especially from their parents. And as a responsible parent, you need to be there for them in their achievements and most importantly, at times when they feel low. Spending time with your kids will make them realise that they matter to you.

4. To Teach and Learn New Things

When you spend time with your family, you obviously discuss new things. This is the best way to share interesting information, news, or simply, hold engaging conversations. Children are always, all ears. No doubt, they will love to hear something interesting and tell their tales of school. This way, the whole family learns something new.

5. To Pass on Traditions

Every family has a set of traditions that are passed on through generations. It could be something as simple as having a secret handshake or going to a fancy restaurant once a month. Traditions make you feel special together.

6. To Learn to Deal With Highs and Lows Together

A family means being there for each other in both the good and the bad. A family is all about fighting the odds, together. Familial bonds are beautiful, and the whole point of being a family is to support one another through thick and thins. When you spend quality time with your family, you get to know what’s going on in each other’s lives.

7. To Understand One Another

When you spend time with your family, you get to know your loved ones better. This way, you understand them well. You learn what they love, their pet peeves, and their fears. The more time you spend with your loved ones, the more you will understand them.

8. Keeps the Family Together

Children must feel protected and reassured at home. Investing time with them assures them of your constant support. For instance, if facing bullying, regular conversations create a safe space for them to confide in you. Without this, they may not seek help when needed. Providing a nurturing home environment ensures they feel secure and cherished.

9. Builds Self-esteem

When children experience a sense of worthiness in their home environment, they tend to exude confidence and sociability. These kids are more apt to form friendships effortlessly, lend a helping hand, and cultivate a positive outlook on life.

Spending time together with family shouldn’t be rigidly timed. Devoting 45 minutes to an hour daily and four to five hours on weekends, based on schedules and convenience, can be beneficial. However, it’s important not to disrupt crucial routines like bedtime and learning. Balancing work commitments is also essential. Ensure that during family time, there’s an exclusive focus on bonding – no work, television, or smartphones. It’s a dedicated period for genuine relaxation with your loved ones.

Now that you know why spending time with your family is so important, try these ways if you don’t know how do you spend time with your family:

1. Have at Least One Meal Together

Make it a point to have at least one meal together as a family. You could have breakfast or dinner together. We know that having lunch together every day is not possible because of your jobs but don’t let that stop you from spending time as a family Enjoy a meal together, share your thoughts and feelings, and spend quality time.

A family having dinner together

2. Exercise or Workout Together

Working out with your family members can be a lot of fun. This is a double win for all as this way you will be healthy as well. Join the local gym, or simply, work out at home if you’ve got the equipment. You can also teach your kids to exercise. Start teaching simple exercises to your kids; once they get a knack of it, they will look forward to exercising schedules and spending time with you.

3. Go for a Walk After Dinner

There’s just something beautiful about the nights, don’t you think? There is silence but it is peaceful. It’s the best time to go for a walk. After your meal and before going to bed, make it a point to take a walk or stroll on the empty road outside. Take your family along. Talk to each other, make plans for the future, and just enjoy!

4. Pick a Book to Read

You could read a book to your little one. Inculcating the habit of reading is a great way to expand knowledge and creativity. Pick a good book to read, and you can later discuss what you’ve read. This way you can spend time with your kid and help him learn a new story as well.

5. Plan a Day Out Each Month

Once a month, go out on a field trip or picnic. And every year, plan a vacation to a place where you have never been before. Travelling and visiting places can be great fun and is a fantastic way to spend some quality time with your family.

6. Turn Off Your Phone

You’re with your family. The plan is to spend quality time. Taking calls, especially from work, should be the last thing you do when you’re spending time with your family. So, switch off your phones and focus on each other.

7. Cook a Meal Together

Cooking is a great activity and doing this together as a family is a great way to spend family time. You can cook a new dish each time, or stick to an old tradition and cook a particular dish that is an old recipe passed on through generations.

8. Clean the House Together

Cleaning the house may not sound fun, but when you do it together as a family, it becomes fun. You could revamp your house, move the furniture around, and get rid of all that clutter. At the end of the day, you’ll be satisfied to see that you did something productive and spent time with your family as well.

9. Spread Smiles

Doing a good deed for people will not only make them happy but you as well. You could visit an old-age home, orphanage, or an NGO. The choice is yours, just make sure that you spend a good time there and bring a smile on the faces of the people who need to smile more often. Helping others will instil a sense of gratitude and love in all your family members.

10. Help Your Children With Their School Work

Take some time off to help your children with their school work. You need to know what’s going on in your child’s life, and at this point, school is their second home. Helping them out with their homework will allow you to figure out their weaknesses and strong points. Sparing time to spend with the children will instil a sense of confidence in them as well. They will be more open to coming face to face with their weaknesses and fears they have about school if you are by their side.

11. Take Your Child to School

Ensure you personally take your child to school or any additional classes they attend. Consistently doing so creates more opportunities for quality time together. Transform travel time into bonding time!

12. Share Family History

Set aside moments to recount your family’s history. Bring out old photo albums and peruse them with your children. Expand your family collection by adding new pictures together, and make this a habitual activity.

Here are some of the negative repercussions of not allocating time to children:

1. Behavioural Challenges

Children whose emotional and psychological needs go unmet may develop feelings of insecurity and anger. This could lead them to rely on and trust strangers who may exploit their innocence.

2. Over-reliance on Technology

In the absence of ample parental interaction, children may turn to gadgets and online entertainment to alleviate their loneliness. Excessive time spent on smartphones could hinder their physical and mental development.

3. Deteriorating Academic Performance

Emotional distress can translate into subpar academic results, with no one to provide guidance throughout their educational journey.

4. Social Withdrawal

A child lacking attention and affection may exhibit signs of withdrawal. They may believe they are unloved and unworthy of your time. This could manifest in aggression or resorting to bullying as a means to release their pent-up frustration and anger.

The following are the warning signs that you are not spending enough time with your family:

  • Your awareness of your children’s preferences, such as their favourite games, food, toys, or cartoons, may have slipped your mind.
  • Additionally, you might not remember the last time your family went on a holiday and enjoyed quality time together.
  • Surprisingly, it could be a family member or your parents who have a deeper understanding of your child compared to you.
  • Your child appears to exhibit a greater level of comfort and ease in the presence of their caregiver or nanny rather than with you.

1. What Are Some Creative Ways to Include Extended Family Members in Family Time?

Here are some ways to include extended family members in family time:

  • Arrange a virtual cooking competition to unite the extended family.
  • Establish a collective online photo album for cherished memories.
  • Host a talent show or storytelling session for individual expressions.
  • Organize themed virtual game nights for inclusive enjoyment.

2. How Can Parents Effectively Manage Both Their Work and Family Schedules to Ensure They Spend Enough Time With Their Children?

Parents can prioritize time management by setting boundaries, creating a balanced routine, and delegating tasks. Utilizing technology for scheduling and communication and incorporating quality family moments into daily activities promotes meaningful connections.

Spending time with your family and enjoying time with your family is not a chore, it is a privilege. To have people in your life who love you immensely is a blessing. Do not take your loved ones for granted. Spend time with them and make memories.

IELTS Essay: Activities for Leisure Time

IELTS Essay: Activities for Leisure Time

This is an IELTS writing task 2 sample answer essay from the general training exam on the topic of planning your activities for your leisure time.

Thank you for reading my essays and if you want to support my work, please consider signing up for my Patreon here where you will get exclusive access to my IELTS Ebooks and essay!

Some people think that one should plan in detail activities for their leisure time, while others disagree with this view.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Many feel that it is important to plan out their free time activities, while others opt to live more spontaneously. In my opinion, planning can be useful but over time it will devalue the activities themselves.

Arranging one’s leisure activities ahead of time is a natural impulse to ease tension and ensure their usefulness. Some psychologists have termed humans the ‘planning animal’ because of an inborn tendency arising from a calming need for security. To the person doing the planning, this serves the secondary purpose of ensuring they are not wasting their time. For example, if a motivated individual plans their day they might set out to do some exercise, read a book, finish some work at home, and cook a meal. These are productive tasks that will lead to a feeling of fulfillment at the end of the day.

However, this drive causes undue pressure and hinders enjoyment of a given activity. The human propensity to plan is also an underlying cause of stress and keeps individuals from being fully present in the moment. This can result in a situation where pre-planned activities become joyless. For instance, the person described above who maps out their day might feel they are simply ticking items off a to-do list and not enjoy the activity in itself. Contrast this with a more spontaneous lifestyle that still entails productivity but does not set a purposeful goal for every action. This person will accomplish just as much but enjoy it much more since they can be fully invested in the moment and act.

In conclusion, the useful aspects of planning do not outweigh the worth derived from spontaneous action. Individuals must naturally strike a balance but be mindful they are not subordinating an activity to its utilitarian value.

1. Many feel that it is important to plan out their free time activities, while others opt to live more spontaneously. 2. In my opinion, planning can be useful but over time it will devalue the activities themselves.

  • Paraphrase the overall essay topic.

What do the words in bold below mean?

Many feel that it is important to plan out their free time activities, while others opt to live more spontaneously . In my opinion, planning can be useful but over time it will devalue the activities themselves.

Arranging one’s leisure activities ahead of time is a natural impulse to ease tension and ensure their usefulness . Some psychologists have termed humans the ‘planning animal’ because of an inborn tendency arising from a calming need for security . To the person doing the planning, this serves the secondary purpose of ensuring they are not wasting their time. For example, if a motivated individual plans their day they might set out to do some exercise, read a book, finish some work at home, and cook a meal. These are productive tasks that will lead to a feeling of fulfillment at the end of the day .

However, this drive causes undue pressure and hinders enjoyment of a given activity . The human propensity to plan is also an underlying cause of stress and keeps individuals from being fully present in the moment . This can result in a situation where pre-planned activities become joyless . For instance, the person described above who maps out their day might feel they are simply ticking items off a to-do list and not enjoy the activity in itself . Contrast this with a more spontaneous lifestyle that still entails productivity but does not set a purposeful goal for every action. This person will accomplish just as much but enjoy it much more since they can be fully invested in the moment and act.

In conclusion, the useful aspects of planning do not outweigh the worth derived from spontaneous action . Individuals must naturally strike a balance but be mindful they are not subordinating an activity to its utilitarian value .

Many are of the opinion that it is of paramount importance to plan out their free time activities in advance, while others choose a more spontaneous way of living. Although planning can be of enormous use for individuals, I am strongly convinced that it may both add undue stress and make their daily activities appear monotonous. The arrangement for recreational activities beforehand brings about exceptional benefits. This is because individuals can plan to partake in or perform activities that possibly add values to their lives such as reading books, doing exercise, cooking a healthy meal, or merely addressing certain incomplete tasks at work. These productive tasks, if performed according to the plans, are likely to instill in them a sense of fulfillment at the end of the day. Furthermore, knowing what individuals should do in detail in their free time can avoid them immersing themselves excessively in leisure activities, thus encroaching on time spent on other priorities such as working or studying. Therefore, it is understandable why many place a strong emphasis on planning recreational activities ahead of time. Nonetheless, I claim that making plans about what individuals should do in their free time is likely to impose unnecessary stress and hinder their enjoyment of these activities. First, the truth is that not everything can go according to the plans as unexpected situations may arise. Therefore, if individuals are unable to tick off all boxes on their to-do lists due to unforeseeable circumstances such as illnesses or accidents, it is possible that they may feel stressed or even depressed because of not being productive enough, which possibly wreaks havoc on their mental health. Second, planning may lead to recreational activities both less predictable and appealing, potentially depriving individuals of their enjoyment which is the primary purpose of leisure activities in the first place. In conclusion, I opine that despite enabling individuals to be more productive in their spare time, arranging free time activities in advance may do more harm than good. Therefore, a balance between enjoying recreational activities and their utilitarian values is necessary.

I Was Adopted From China as a Baby. I’m Still Coming to Terms With That.

Black birds flock on the ground together, with a solitary small red bird in their midst.

By Cindy Zhu Huijgen

Ms. Huijgen, a Dutch journalist based in China and a former adoptee, wrote from Beijing.

As early as I can remember, I wished I hadn’t been Chinese.

I hated my unruly black hair and my eyes, which marked me as a foreigner in the Netherlands, where I grew up. I went to bed at night hoping I’d wake up with blond hair and blue eyes like the other Dutch kids. Sometimes I tricked myself into believing this had happened — until a mirror reminded me where I came from.

I was adopted from China as a toddler in 1993 by white Dutch parents who couldn’t conceive on their own. I grew up in a deeply Christian small town where, every week, dozens of people — all of them white — paraded past our house in their Sunday best on the way to church. It was about as far as you could get — physically, culturally, ethnically — from China.

I don’t blame my adoptive parents for the sense of alienation I grew up with. They did their best to give me a happy childhood, and I love them very much. But when China confirmed earlier this month that it would end most adoptions by foreign parents, a wave of relief washed over me, followed by suppressed anger.

The number of Chinese children placed with overseas families since China opened up to international adoptions in the early 1990s has been estimated at more than 160,000. Around half of these kids went to the United States. The topic is usually discussed from the adoptive parents’ perspective: How it allowed them to start families, how they rescued these orphans and now how the sudden ban leaves applicant couples in the lurch .

Far less attention is given to the darker side of these placements and their impact on adoptees.

China’s strict one-child family planning policy , introduced in 1979, forced many Chinese parents to give up babies. These were usually girls , because of a traditional preference for male heirs. A profit-motivated overseas adoption industry cropped up in response, in which human lives were sometimes bought and sold .

For many like me — plucked from our home cultures and raised in countries where we didn’t quite fit in — the search for who we are and where we belong has been lifelong and full of discovery, as well as confusion, regret and loss.
