These styles have been shaping and changing throughout history, affected by a variety of factors, including the overall structure of the world and the mood of society. In the 21st century, one of the most widespread types of leadership styles is democratic leadership. This style implies that the decision-making power is never concentrated in one person’s hands. Instead, all subordinates of the leader with this style are given a voice in the process of making decisions. Yet, the responsibility for the actions of the entire group is still on the leader. Throughout decades, this form of leadership has been considered one of the most effective and humane ones. No wonder so many impressive leaders in history relied on it, including Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F Kennedy, Mahatma Gandhi, Barack Obama, and many others. Due to its nature, the key characteristics of a good leader with this style include teamwork, empathy, and a fair mind.

An opposite of the democratic style is autocratic Leadership. This style implies that the entire control, command, and power are concentrated in the hands of a leader. In this setting, the leader makes all decisions on their own, without giving their subordinates much room for negotiation or objections. And the responsibility is also fully on the leader. Due to its somewhat tyrannic nature, this style of leadership has a lot of detractors, especially in the modern world. Nevertheless, it still has some adherents. This is an IELTS Writing Task 2 sample answer on the topic of leadership from the real IELTS test/exam.

It’s really interesting because when I started this blog years ago – this was the very first question that I wrote a sample answer for!

The questions can repeat themselves on IELTS, but only years later.

I thought it would be interesting to write about it again to see if my sample essays have changed a lot or not.

Some believe that people are naturally born as leaders while others feel that leadership skills can develop. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Many are of the view that leadership is innate, rather than cultivated through time and experience. In my opinion, leadership is largely developed rather than gifted.

Those who believe that there are naturally born leaders point out the character of a person as a fixed quantity. There are certain individuals who display a natural charisma and inimitable capacity for command. A recent example of this would be Barack Obama. He is a naturally eloquent, stately, physically imposing presence and perfectly walks a fine line between warmth and firmness. Researchers have long identitified common natural characteristics of leadership such as height, a deep voice, a strong chin and natural grace of movement. These cannot be developed to a significant degree and therefore support the claim that leadership is intrinsic.

However, great leadership is more deliberate than spontaneous. There are countless examples of individuals possessing all the physical characteristics of leaders who fall well short of inspiring people. An instructive example of this is Steve Jobs. Early in his career he inspired people with his exceptional talent but that had its limits as he pushed and demeaned employees ultimately leading to his ouster from Apple. This humbling experience led him to soften the sharper edges of his personality in the ensuing decade by considering other viewpoints and giving up more control to competent employees. These learned traits served him well when he become CEO of Apple again and reached what many regard as the pinnacle of leadership.

In conclusion, though the endpoint may obscure the origins, all leaders must cultivate their hubris to become great leaders. The long-standing assumptions about leadership must be challenged in order to put in place better institutional practices to mold future pioneers of industry and politics.

Olympic golf leaderboard: Women's final scores, updates from Round 4 at Le Golf National

Lydia Ko has collected them all! Olympic medals, that is.

The New Zealander completed her collection of all three Olympic medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics by winning the women’s golf tournament on Sunday. Ko entered the final round in a tie with Switzerland's Morgane Metraux. While Metraux and other golfers struggled throughout the fourth and final round of the tournament at Le Golf National, Ko was a steady presence outside of one mistake-filled hole. Ko won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics and silver at the Rio Olympics.

Ko clinched the victory on the final, Par-5 18th hole, where she earned a birdie to finish with a score of 10-under. With that, she ensured she finished ahead of Germany’s Esther Henseleit (-8), who finished the final round 6-under to put herself into position for the silver medal.

The 27-year-old golfer had three birdies and a bogey on her front nine and built up a five-shot advantage through 12 holes. However, a triple bogey on the 13th hole opened the door for Henseleit and other golfers. Ko entered the final hole with a one-shot lead but held on for the victory.

China’s Lin Xiyu finished with the bronze medal, shooting 7-under for the tournament. Lin sunk a birdie on Hole 18 to pull out of a five-way tie to win the medal and avoid a potential playoff.

Zhang Rose finished shooting 5-under for the day and in a tie for eighth place. Her teammate and No. 1 golfer in the world, Nelly Korda , shot 1-under and finished tied for 22nd. Korda shot 3-over for the day, while Rose was 2-over to fall out of contention for a medal.

The building where Fuad Shukr was killed in an airstrike

The rubble is still being cleared in Lebanon's capital Beirut where last week Israel assassinated Hezbollah's top military commander, Fuad Shukr, in an airstrike.

It was an audacious move in the city's southern suburb of Dahieh that left Hezbollah looking exposed. It also has the potential to reshape the Middle East. The group has vowed to retaliate against Israel.

Next to the building where Shukr was killed, I meet 65-year-old Noura Beddran. She's animated and incensed. She tells me she was in the lift when the explosion happened.

The blast ripped through her apartment. She shows me the damage - there is debris everywhere - windows blown out, bricks on the beds, everything covered in dust.

"My daughter was sleeping here when the explosion happened, but at that very moment she'd gone to the other room. When it hit, she couldn't see a thing," she tells me.

I ask her if she fears Israel might strike her area again - it's a Hezbollah stronghold.

"We never know when they will strike, for so long they would attack us day and night, they don't have any limits," she says.

"Whenever they want, they will hit us. But God will take revenge on Israel, the United States and Britain."

A few floors down, I meet 40-year-old Sabah Suleiman. She's sitting in a shell of a room - looking forlornly into the abyss.

"It's unbearable," she says. "You're sitting doing nothing and suddenly everything collapses on you."

She says she's not scared of death, but the anxiety of wondering when the next attack might be is crippling.

"When you live through times like these, you die a hundred times every day," she says.

Western states have designated Hezbollah a terrorist organisation, but its influence and firepower have grown hugely in recent years.

Israel's strike on one of its top leaders was a major blow for the group - stripping them of a man who'd helped take them from a shadowy civil war militia group to a major player in the region.

Lebanon has its own unique dysfunction to wrestle with.

The government is in power, but it's not in control. It has no president and the economy is crippled. They, too, are trying to second guess what move Hezbollah will make. And they are struggling to prepare for what might come.

Nasser Yassin, the environment minister overseeing contingency planning for a wider conflict, says Lebanon would need $100m (£79m) a month for food, shelter, healthcare and other needs in a worst-case scenario.

It is an almost impossible situation. He also has little faith in Benjamin Netanyahu committing to a ceasefire.

"I think Netanyahu is only concerned about waging this regional war to save his neck," he tells me.

But the Israeli prime minister has said he'll go back to the negotiating table - after America, Qatar and Egypt called on him to meet next week to discuss a ceasefire.

Recent reports suggest Hezbollah could now strike out alone, with Iran delaying its response until after possible Gaza ceasefire negotiations next week.
