The Writing Process

Over my first semester at College of Dupage I have had multiple writing prompts throughout my classes, and English 1101 led the way. It is always helpful to have a class where the focus is to make yourself a more effective writer rather than learn or research about other topics. While my overall approach and attitude towards writing didn’t change very much, I did learn some new things about doing multi-model projects and getting started with writing.

Where I Started

I came into college as a confident writer and communicator. I had good teachers in the past that helped me expand my vocabulary and focus on the intended audience. This is displayed well in all my major writing assignments, but really takes off with the profile I did with interviewing my brother and the multi-model piece . Focusing on my audience and thinking about what they would want to know or hear about has always been one of my writing strengths. In my interview on my brother, who recently graduated from nursing school, I made sure to ask questions that I thought other healthcare workers would want to be asked. I also considered what everyday people would want to know, when it comes to COVID, from someone who has experience working in hospitals.

For my multi-model project my audience was parents and people who work with young boys in their career. It was important to use a lost of statistics to back up what I was saying and appeal to logos more than pathos. This is because they could get defensive and are already in an emotional state of mind from being told that there is a problem in the area that they are working. Parents would be especially defensive and may feel like they are being told that they are raising their kids wrong. For these reasons, I focused on statistics and logic to pull them out of the emotional state of mind and do more informing than influencing.

Where I’m At

In terms of changing my writing style I don’t think I changed drastically. I keep my same mindset while writing aside from my first draft. One thing I learned about my writing style is that I do much better when getting my ideas out on paper first. I used to just struggle through a first draft and then go back and do lots of editing, but after the shitty first drafts assignments we did I realized how much easier it is to not care about the first draft and just get the ideas out of my head. I also learned how to use google sites to put together a project and move a power point into google slides.

The Future of my Writing

Most of my writing assignments in my college career are going to be researched based in the future. It was helpful to do research for some of my assignments this semester and I learned about how to google something filtering for just .gov or .org sites. I’m interested in using this tool to easily do research in psychology in the future. I also discovered a few things about myself and the world around me from the sub-topics we talked about in class. I’m much more aware of things like a single story being told to me, and question more things in the media because of this. That’s one of the things that I liked most about this class; even with assignments that are like something I’ve don’t before, I still learned something about myself or the world through the topic we wrote about.

Semester in Retrospect

For any students going into English 1101, I would tell them to try and learn something about life. Obviously, the focus is on improving yourself as a writer; that will happen regardless of what you write about, so why not try to learn something profound through your topic. My writing got better through learning about researching and developing a new way to get started, but I think what I learned about the importance of confidence as a writer in first drafts, a single story that I’ve been taught about others, and the media perpetuating those stories is infinitely more important.
