ENC 1102: Sociocultural Construct for Research Writing

ENC 1102 emphasizes the discipline and community-specific nature of academic and public research writing through sustained, semester-long inquiry projects into topics related to writing, language, literacy, and/or rhetoric. Students learn to ask research questions that matter to specific communities, collect and analyze primary and secondary materials to extend public and academic conversations, refine research findings and continually revisit and extend ideas, and express those ideas across multiple genres and modalities. Through this process, ENC 1102 invites students to contribute to conversations about writing, language, literacy and rhetoric and introduces them to a range of research literacies that they can adapt for future use at UCF and beyond.

ENC 1102 includes an ePortfolio where students demonstrate the course learning outcomes. ePortfolios are also used as a direct measure for programmatic assessment.

ENC 1102: Student Learning Outcomes

Generating Inquiry. Students will be able to generate and explore genuine lines of inquiry related to writing, language, literacy, and/or rhetoric.

Multiple ways of writing. Students will be able to purposefully integrate multimodality, multiple languages, and/or multiliteracies into writing products to support their goals.

Research Genre Production. Students will be able to produce writing that demonstrates their ability to navigate choices and constraints in a variety of public and/or academic research genres that matter to specific communities.

Contributing Knowledge. Students will be able to draw conclusions based on analysis and interpretation of primary evidence and place that work in conversation with other source materials.

Revision. Students will be able to negotiate differences in and act with intention on feedback from readers when drafting, revising, and editing their writing.

UCF students are required to complete both ENC1101 and ENC1102 with a grade of C- or better in order to fulfill the General Education Program . Questions regarding AP, CLEP, and transfer credit for these courses should be directed to your college’s undergraduate advising office, to the College of Arts and Humanities Student Advising , or to the Office of Undergraduate Studies .

Search the library resources for articles in databases, books and more about National Parks

Search for "National Parks" as a starting point. At the top of the results list, note the "Research Starter" which gives an overview of the topic. Use the advanced search for additional keywords, such as "United States" or the name of a particular National Park or Monument. Narrow your results in the "advanced search" options or by using the left-hand column of the results list page. For example, you may limit the results to "articles" or "ebooks." You may find a more clearly defined subject/topic. Consider the importance of the publication year. Determine the type of source needed, such as news, academic journals or magazines.

Sample ENC 1101 & 1102 Discussion Thread

Sample ENC 1101 & 1102 Discussion Thread

Below is a sample completed discussion thread from a former student. Students were given a topic to discuss from the readings (the supervisory relationship) and relay it to their own personal lives. I have included the sample topic followed by the initial response given by a student (Jason).  For the “Student 1 (Jason)” response, I have also included his responses to two of his peers’ posts from the discussion thread.

Instructor Post: The last couple of weeks, our readings have focused on factors that affect the supervisor-employee relationship. What are the key lessons or strategies you will take from these readings as you approach the task of establishing a supervisory relationship with future employees?

Student #1 (Jason)  - Initial Response to the Post

Since professional development is a lifelong process, I think the supervisor and employee relationship is essential. Supervisors do not only supervise the development of specific skills, but need to be supportive of the employee by learning how to be a supportive. That is, learning how to learn and to feel comfortable engaging in supervision is a skill in and of itself, and one that I believe can only be fostered in a positive supervisor/employee relationship. In the readings, they  discuss behaviors and attributes that predict the supervisor alliance (i.e., interpersonal style, use of power, use of self-disclosure, ethical behavior, attachment style and evaluative practice), all of which I hope to consider when I become a supervisor. As I reflect on my own experiences as a employee I know all six of these have impacted my relationships with my supervisors. For example, self-disclosure stories about mistakes made by my supervisor helped me feel more comfortable sharing and accepting my own mistakes while learning how to handle when mistakes occur. Also, as a supervisor, I would be especially mindful about how to create an effective system to provide feedback, which may vary depending on the supervisee’s style. My aim would be to provide constructive feedback that leads to behavior change, while maintaining a positive relationship. The readings taught me how employees and supervisors react and manage feelings of shame and anxiety, which directly impact employee behaviors. I believe that supervisor’s should make effort within the limitations of the supervisory relationship to ameliorate such negative feelings and recognize when their own behavior as a supervisor is affecting the employee negatively.

Student 1(Jason) Reply to 1 st Peer Student’s Post

I agree with your post. My past supervisors have also done many things that I feel enhanced our relationship. One thing that I have appreciated is having a standing meeting time with my supervisor. This has made me feel as though my supervisor has enough time to devote to the supervisory relationship, and that they value having an employee. I have also appreciated when supervisors take the time to personally introduce me to other staff members. I had one supervisor who did this every time that I took on a new case, and this always made me feel much more comfortable and reduced my anxiety about starting a new case.

Student 1 (Jason) Reply to 2 nd Peer Student’s Post

I agree that feeling valued is critical. I also think I will try to use your supervisor’s strategy of introducing my employees to teachers when I am placed is that position. In addition to having a standing meeting time, my first supervisor always encouraged me to seek him out or to ask questions when I needed to, just like your supervisor. He always reinforced my asking so that I never felt like I was getting in the way. I can see that the best supervisory relationships that you have been a part of have been ones in which your supervisor valued your assistance and truly enjoyed having you as an employee.

Selecting a Topic

As you may already have discovered this is often the hardest step in the research paper writing process. It is also a very important step. If you choose a topic that is very broad - "Poverty" - you will be overwhelmed with information and you will have difficulty organizing your ideas and findings into a manageable, cohesive paper. If you choose a topic that is very narrow - "Gifted Children Living in Poverty Benefit From Having Pet Fish" - obviously, you will have trouble finding enough sources to support your paper. Take time to focus your topic.

If you can, try to choose a topic that truly interests you.  Thankfully, controversial topics are often the most interesting topics!

Not finding sources that are either pro or con?

  • Your topic might not be controversial enough
  • You may  need to use different search terms/databases

What's an annotated bibliography?

One common type of assignment you may be asked to complete is an annotated bibliography. The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to help you organize and evaluate research sources. Writing an annotation helps you identify what information you've found and decide how to use that information to construct your research paper or project.

An annotation is a summary and analysis of a source included under a complete works cited or reference entry for that source. There are two main types of annotations: descriptive (or informative)  and evaluative (or critical) .

A descriptive annotation provides a summary of the source, including its main claims and evidence, while an evaluative annotation provides commentary on the quality of the source and (sometimes) your response to the source's main ideas.

Futch, L.S., deNoyelles, A., Thompson, K., & Howard, W. (2016). "Comfort" as a critical success factor in blended learning courses.  Online Learning 20 (3), 140-58. https://doi.org/10.24059/olj.v20i3.978

Futch et. al. claim that while there are quantitative studies and anecdotal reports about blended learning, there is a lack of qualitative research about blended learning in a classroom setting. The study is meant to address that deficiency by interviewing three community college instructors. In the interviews, the instructors discussed the obstacles they face when teaching blended courses and their strategies to overcome those obstacles. From the interviews, Futch et. al. identify the instructors’ perception of their student’s “comfort” as the strongest factor in student success. “Comfort” involves reducing student vulnerabilities and encouraging participation. The second area the research identified is support, which refers to the organizational and communication strategies employed by instructors. The authors conclude that more of these qualitative studies are needed to investigate effective strategies for blended learning.

Krugman, Paul. “Confronting Inequality.” “They Say/ I Say”: the Moves that Matter in Academic Writing: with Readings , 3rd ed., edited by Gerald Graff, Cathy Birkenstein, and Russel Durst, W. W. Norton & Company, 2015, pp. 561-79.

In his essay, Krugman discusses the social, economic, and political costs of inequality in America to argue about the need of recognizing this problem and finding a solution. Some of the reasons he gives for the increasing gap between rich and poor include rising levels of personal debt, increased tax breaks for the rich, a conservative shift in politics, and the decline of unions. Despite these reasons, Krugman ends his essay on a hopeful note, claiming that is still possible to decrease inequality and make America a truly democratic nation again. Krugman does a particularly thorough job supporting his claims with specific evidence, including images, statistics, and data. He also provides contemporary and historical examples to prove his points. In terms of structuring his argument, Krugman effectively addresses and refutes opponents who claim that social inequality isn’t an important issue. However, Krugman does convey a slight bias against right-wing, conservative politics in this essay.

Definitions

A bibliography is a list of sources used for researching a topic. Information like the author, title, publisher are listed in the bibliography. In MLA Citation style, bibliographies are called the Works Cited page.

An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Depending on your assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following:

Assess : After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source?

Reflect : Once you've summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?
