Students often wonder why they’re learning a given math concept and word problems come in handy to help them realize the practical application of what is being taught. However, teaching word problems can be challenging, both for teachers and students.
This is why we’ll share simple tips on teaching multiplication word problems (grade 4) for teachers and homeschooling parents. Read on to learn more.
What Are Multiplication Word Problems?
Multiplication word problems are math problems that represent actual situations from the real world and involve multiplication.
However, when solving multiplication word problems, children also come across multi-step word problems . These are problems with more than one operation, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
How to Solve Multiplication Word Problems (Grade 4)
Start with simple multiplication word problems.
Explain to students that the trickiest part of any word problem is understanding what is being asked. If they don’t know what they’re being asked to do, it will be very difficult to solve the math problem.
Sometimes, a word problem involves so many details that the key question gets lost. Explain to students that this is why it’s crucial to identify what’s important in a given word problem and what isn’t.
Encourage students to use a highlighter when solving multiplication word problems to highlight the keywords, key numbers, and key operations in a word problem. Provide an easy example where this can be applied, such as:
Jeremy has 7 caramels and he has 5 times as many marshmallows . How many more marshmallows than caramels does he have ?
Explain that the thing we’re trying to find out is how many more marshmallows than caramels Jeremy has – this is the main question that students are asked. To answer the question, explain that they’ll use the underlined key information and perform two steps.
The first step is to figure out how many marshmallows Jeremy has; he has 5 x 7 as many marshmallows or 35 marshmallows . In other words, the first step is multiplication.
In the second step, once children are aware that Jeremy has 35 marshmallows and 7 caramels, they can easily find out how many more marshmallows than caramels he has by subtracting the total number of caramels from the total number of marshmallows, that is:
35 – 7 = 28
So Jeremy has 28 more marshmallows than caramels, which children could find out by engaging in two steps – multiplication and subtraction.
Move on to ‘Wordier’ Multiplication Word Problems
Don’t jump into extremely wordy problems right away, but gradually transition to word problems of moderate difficulty that involve several steps, such as:
Mr. Conner bought 15 packets of pencils for his students. 5 of the packets had 6 pencils and the other 10 of the packet had 8 pencils . How many pencils did Mr.Conner buy in all ?
Explain to students that after they underline the important information, they need to assess which steps they need to take. For starters, make sure they understand they’re trying to find out the answer to the key question – how many pencils Mr. Conner bought in total?
To be able to answer this question, explain to them that they’ll use the key information that’s highlighted in the word problem as we did before, taking one step at a time. Point out that we know there are 5 packets of pencils that have 6 pencils each, which means:
5 x 6 = 30 pencils
The other key information they have is that there are 10 packets of pencils with 8 pencils each, that is:
10 x 8 = 80 pencils
Finally, point out that we’ll add the total number of pencils in 5 of the packets and in 10 of the packets, or:
30 + 80 = 110 pencils
So, the answer to “how many pencils Mr. Conner bought in total” is 110 pencils. This multi-step problem involved two multiplication steps and one addition step to get the right answer.
Activities to Practice Multiplication Word Problems (Grade 4)
Use this Assignment Worksheet (Members Only) to further reinforce children’s skills in solving multiplication word problems. The worksheet contains a dozen multiplication word problems that contain relatable and fun examples.
For instance, in part A of the worksheet, students are asked to solve a number of challenges connected to 4th graders in Mr. Vincent’s class that went to an amusement park last week, bought ice cream, and visited a haunted house.
To prepare for this activity, print out one copy of the worksheet (Members Only) per student. Make sure to bring a sufficient number of markers with different colors that students can use to highlight the key information in the math problems.
Explain to students that they’ll work in pairs of two to solve the word problems. Hand out the worksheets and markers to each pair. After a pair is done, they present their worksheet in front of the entire class by explaining each step they took to solve the given multi-step word problem.
Online Math Activity
Use this online math activity from Khan Academy to solve multiplication word problems. There’s a big variety of multi-step word problems that involve multiplication as a step that children will definitely enjoy.
Make sure that there’s a suitable technical device for each student (such as a laptop, iPad, or even a phone) so that they play individually. Since these online word problems can be done individually, they’re also a great resource for parents who are homeschooling their children.
Each question even contains a hint or a video in case the child gets stuck.

Multiplying Using Arrays
We can multiply by breaking up the multiplier. We can use an array to show this.
How to multiply 2-digit by 2-digit numbers by breaking apart their arrays into easily manageable multipliers and finding partial products?
Example: 13 × 12
How to use the Area Array Model to simplify the multi-digit multiplication process?
Example: 54 × 18
Multiplying using Expanded Form
Solve the following multiplication problem by estimating first, then modeling the problem using base ten blocks and record using expanded form, then multiply to show the number of hundreds first or by showing the ones place first.
Example: You made 22 oatmeal cookies from one batch of mix. You make 3 batches of cookies. How many cookies did you make?
Step 1: Estimate First. 3 × 22 is about 3 × 20 = 60 cookies. I predict that I will make a little more than 60 cookies.
Step 4: Compare the final product in step 3 with your estimate in step 1. Multiplying using Expanded Form Multiplying using place value and expanded form with larger numbers to get products.

Lesson Plan: Multiplication for Grade 4
Multiplication Lesson Plan
Created by Samantha Einarson, John Titanic & Keiro Blyth
Description
The goal of this lesson plan is to enable students to practice and develop their multiplication skills through using real life examples. Grade 4 students will be working on developing the following:
Connection to Curriculum
Big Idea ● Development of computational fluency and multiplicative thinking requires analysis of patterns and relations in multiplication and division
Curricular Competencies ● Develop mental math strategies and abilities to make sense of quantities ● Model mathematics in contextualized experiences ● Develop, demonstrate, and apply mathematical understanding through play, inquiry, and problem solving ● Develop and use multiple strategies to engage in problem solving
Content ● Multiplication and division of two- or three-digit numbers by one-digit numbers ● Multiplication and division facts to 100 (introductory computational strategies)
Key Terms ● Array: an arrangement of rows and columns that match a multiplication equation. ● Repeated addition: a multiplication equation where the same number is added repeatedly.
Materials Needed
Story Props ● Cookies, Food alternatives for people with dietary restrictions, Chocolate chips, Cookie Monster Puppet
Introductory Activity (Involving Classroom Desks) ● Ask students to organize their desks into rows of 5. ● Ask, then discuss: “What are some ways to calculate how many students we have in this class?” Facilitate conversation and encourage students to think up multiple strategies. ● When students refer to repeated addition and array forms of multiplication, draw a diagram using dots (in columns and rows for array, and groups of the same number repeated for repeated addition) on the board. Explain that “it is these two methods we will be focusing on today.”
Cookie Recipe Scenario ● Begin by introducing activity in a fun way, either by using a puppet who is hungry for cookies or simply by asking students if they would like to make some cookies. ● Once this question is asked, tell them you have an excellent chocolate chip recipe and write it down onto the board. Tell them this recipe makes 12 cookies. ● Then ask students if this recipe will make enough for everyone in the class to have at least one cookie? ● Instruct students to get into pairs and discuss what must be done in order for the class to make enough cookies for everyone ● Come back together as a class and facilitate an open discussion about how multiplication (repeated addition) can be used to triple the recipe.
Chocolate Chip Group Work ● Ask students to get into groups of 2 or 3. ● Provide each group with a pile of chocolate chips. ● Explain to students (perhaps by using puppet) that each cookie must contain exactly 10 chocolate chips. ● Ask them to organize their chocolate chips in any manner they wish but encourage them to practice using the multiplication methods array and repeated addition. Afterwards, come together as a class and discuss the different ways students calculated how many chips they had.
Connection to Indigenous Knowledge
This lesson plan connects to Indigenous knowledge and learning in that it involves problem-solving through story in a community context (the students are working together to ensure there are enough cookies for everyone to share). This lesson plan connects to the First Peoples Principles of Learning regarding the following:
Learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential and relational (focused on connectedness, on reciprocal relationships, and a sense of place)
Learning is embedded in memory, history, and story
Accommodations
Students will have the opportunity to work with manipulatives as needed, and can use their notebooks to work out equations. Students have the opportunity to explain their thought process to other students in partner or group discussion and potentially with the whole class. Students who need more of a challenge could also extend themselves by working with more advanced numbers to bake cookies for an even larger number of people.
In regards to formative assessment, there are many opportunities in this lesson for the teacher to ask the students questions and discuss key concepts with the entire class, as well as by walking around and checking in while students are working in groups, partners, or individually. The teacher could have a checklist where they take note if they have heard every student speak at some point during the entire class, and make notes of relevant, descriptive comments when possible. As this lesson involves a visually engaging story, teachers could use photo documentation to document student learning. If desired, students can share their thought processes and different multiplication strategies on the projector for other students to follow along with, or the teacher could even set up fish bowl demonstrations.
Finally, students could be asked to reflect on their learning in their math journals or on exit-slips, describing what they learned during the lesson and any further questions they might have. FOR ASSESSMENT TEMPLATES, CONSULT FULL PDF Multiplication Mini Lesson for visual components
Possible follow-up activities/Integration with other subject areas
This lesson plan could be integrated with the Grade 4 BC science curriculum through looking at the content “the effect of temperature on particle movement” (2016). This lesson could also be applied to Grade 4 Applied Design Skills and Technology in that it addresses the Curricular Competency ‘Prototyping’ which asks students to “outline general plan, identifying tools and materials” (2016). For the purposes of Physical and Health Education, this lesson could be referred to when discussing moderation and explaining the “relationship between healthy eating and overall well-being” (2016).
Personalized learning
Students are given the opportunity to work alone, with a partner or small group, and as an entire class throughout this lesson. Students are encouraged to use the strategies that work best for them in practicing their multiplication skills. One way to both extend and personalize student learning would be to ask students to bring in a family recipe that is meaningful to them in some way and then use the recipe to work through some multiplication problems. In this way, students are able to connect their learning to something personal and meaningful and have a say in the numbers they want to work with.
