Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering

Students typically complete the Ph.D. degree requirements in three to five years. Early in the program, students focus on course-work that enhances their knowledge as they prepare to conduct research.

Within one year, students must pass the departmental qualifying exam, an oral exam that tests research skills and knowledge of a core mechanical engineering subject area.

Student research forms the core of the Ph.D. program. Research involves active student-directed inquiry into an engineering problem, culminating in a written thesis and oral defense.

Ph.D. Financial Support

The majority of full-time Ph.D. students accepted through the standard application process receive fellowships that cover full tuition, the technology fee, and a stipend for living expenses for up to five years, as long as sufficient progress is made toward degree completion. These awards are sufficient to cover all expenses for the year (including summers). Students are required to pay for health insurance, the transportation fee, the activity fee, books, and course supplies. Off-campus housing is available within walking distance of campus. At least one year of residency is required for the Ph.D. We offer two ways to enter the Ph.D. program.

Olympic Breakdancer Raygun Has PhD in Breakdancing?

Rachael gunn earned a zero in breakdancing at the paris 2024 olympic games., aleksandra wrona, published aug. 13, 2024.

Mixture

About this rating

Gunn's Ph.D. thesis, titled "Deterritorializing Gender in Sydney's Breakdancing Scene: a B-girl's Experience of B-boying," did cover the topic of breakdancing. However ...

... Gunn earned her Ph.D. in cultural studies. Moreover, a "PhD in breakdancing" does not exist as an academic discipline.

On Aug. 10, 2024, a rumor spread on social media that Rachael Gunn (also known as "Raygun"), an Australian breakdancer who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, had a Ph.D. in breakdancing. "This australian breakdancer has a PhD in breakdancing and dance culture and was a ballroom dancer before taking up breaking. I don't even know what to say," one X post on the topic read .

"Australian Olympic breakdancer Rachael Gunn has a PhD in breakdancing and dance culture," one X user wrote , while another asked, "Who did we send? Raygun, a 36-year-old full-time lecturer at Sydney's Macquarie University, completed a PhD in breaking culture and is a lecturer in media, creative arts, literature and language," another X user wrote .

The claim also spread on other social media platforms, such as Reddit and Instagram .

"Is she the best break dancer? No. But I have so much respect for going on an international stage to do something you love even if you're not very skilled at it," one Instagram user commented , adding that, "And, I'm pretty sure she's using this as a research endeavor and will be writing about all our reactions to her performance. Can't wait to read it!"

In short, Gunn's Ph.D. thesis, titled "Deterritorializing Gender in Sydney's Breakdancing Scene: A B-girl's Experience of B-boying," indeed focused on the topic of breakdancing. However, Gunn earned her Ph.D. in cultural studies, not in breakdancing. Furthermore, it's important to note that a "PhD in breakdancing" does not exist as an academic discipline.

Since Gunn's research focused on the breakdancing community, but her degree is actually in the broader field of cultural studies, we have rated this claim as a "Mixture" of truths.

Gunn "secured Australia's first ever Olympic spot in the B-Girl competition at Paris 2024 by winning the QMS Oceania Championships in Sydney, NSW, Australia," the Olympics official website informed .

Gunn earned a zero in breakdancing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and clips of her routine went viral on social media, with numerous users creating memes or mocking dancer's moves. "As well as criticising her attire, social media users mocked the Australian's routine as she bounced around on stage like a kangaroo and stood on her head at times," BBC article on the topic read .

The website of the Macquarie University informed Gunn "is an interdisciplinary and practice-based researcher interested in the cultural politics of breaking" and holds a Ph.D. in cultural studies, as well as a bachelor of arts degree (Hons) in contemporary music:

Rachael Gunn is an interdisciplinary and practice-based researcher interested in the cultural politics of breaking. She holds a PhD in Cultural Studies (2017) and a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Music (2009) from Macquarie University. Her work draws on cultural theory, dance studies, popular music studies, media, and ethnography. Rachael is a practising breaker and goes by the name of 'Raygun'. She was the Australian Breaking Association top ranked bgirl in 2020 and 2021, and represented Australia at the World Breaking Championships in Paris in 2021, in Seoul in 2022, and in Leuven (Belgium) in 2023. She won the Oceania Breaking Championships in 2023.

Gunn's biography further revealed that she is a member of the Macquarie University Performance and Expertise Reasearch Centre, and has a range of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels "across the areas of media, creative industries, music, dance, cultural studies, and work-integrated learning."

Moreover, it informed her research interests included, "Breaking, street dance, and hip-hop culture; youth cultures/scenes; constructions of the dancing body; politics of gender and gender performance; ethnography; the methodological dynamics between theory and practice."

Gunn earned her Ph.D. from the Department of Media, Music, Communications, and Cultural Studies within the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University. Below, you can find the abstract of her paper, shared by the official website of Macquarie University:

This thesis critically interrogates how masculinist practices of breakdancing offers a site for the transgression of gendered norms. Drawing on my own experiences as a female within the male-dominated breakdancing scene in Sydney, first as a spectator, then as an active crew member, this thesis questions why so few female participants engage in this creative space, and how breakdancing might be the space to displace and deterritorialise gender. I use analytic autoetthnography and interviews with scene members in collaboration with theoretical frameworks offered by Deleuze and Guttari, Butler, Bourdieu and other feminist and post-structuralist philosophers, to critically examine how the capacities of bodies are constituted and shaped in Sydney's breakdancing scene, and to also locate the potentiality for moments of transgression. In other words, I conceptualize the breaking body as not a 'body' constituted through regulations and assumptions, but as an assemblage open to new rhizomatic connections. Breaking is a space that embraces difference, whereby the rituals of the dance not only augment its capacity to deterritorialize the body, but also facilitate new possibilities for performativities beyond the confines of dominant modes of thought and normative gender construction. Consequently, this thesis attempts to contribute to what I perceive as a significant gap in scholarship on hip-hop, breakdancing, and autoethnographic explorations of Deleuze-Guattarian theory.

In a response to online criticism of her Olympics performance, Gunn wrote on her Instagram profile: "Don't be afraid to be different, go out there and represent yourself, you never know where that's gonna take you":

SAC graduate Brenda Valdes receives full scholarship to PhD program at Stanford University

August 13, 2024

Office of Marketing & Strategic Communication

Four years after beginning her college career at San Antonio College, Brenda Valdes is now at Stanford University, starting a PhD program in education on a full scholarship. She plans to study the effect of social and cultural influences on the performance of students in high school and college.

It’s a subject that in many ways, she’s already an expert on, after overcoming many obstacles to achieve her academic goals.

She dropped out of school to care for younger siblings in her native Mexico. No other family members had ever gone to college. Her husband did not want her to pursue an education, fearing that it would take too much time away from their three young children.

“I always dreamed about a college education, but at that point I thought, ‘well, I didn’t do it, but I hope my kids do,’” Valdes said.

BrendaValdes-web.jpg

The desire to go to college never went away.

“It was a fire that was always inside of me,” she said.

Her love of education started in kindergarten. Her father took a job as a school custodian in a nearby town. He had no car to commute, so the family was invited to live in unused classrooms at the school. They lived there for five years.

“For me it was the coolest thing ever, because when everyone went home, the school was our playground,” Valdes said. “We’d run in the halls, play basketball and climb fruit trees. I thought we were so privileged because we lived inside the school. I didn’t know we were practically homeless.”

When her father was able to afford a house in their hometown, the family moved back. Her younger siblings enrolled in a school near home, and Valdes continued to attend the school where her father worked, traveling with him each day.

After her parents divorced, Valdes left school in the ninth grade to care for her siblings.

“It was terrible for me. My siblings were happy – they’re happy in their lives – but for me, I always felt incomplete,” she said. “I felt like a disappointment to myself and to society even.”

That feeling motivated her to pursue her college dreams. When the COVID-19 pandemic shifted all classes online, she saw her opportunity to study at home while taking care of her family.

She applied to SAC and took the TSI, a test that measures college readiness.

She didn’t pass, but SAC staff reassured her that she could still go to college and enrolled her in remedial classes over the summer to prepare her for college-level work in the fall.

When the semester started, she was ready, though she was intimidated, especially as a non-native English speaker. She woke up every day at 4 a.m. to study and do homework before her children woke up.

“Every time I wrote something, I didn’t want people to know that I had very little vocabulary, that I wasn’t like them,” Valdes said.

She graduated from SAC in 2022 with a 3.94 GPA and delivered the commencement address at her graduation ceremony.

Her next goal was to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

Soon after starting there, she attended a Mexican Independence Day party on campus and met the leader of UTSA Pathways, a one-year program that teaches undergraduate students to do research in preparation for graduate studies. She joined the program, which provided a stipend and a trip to Stanford University at the end of the year.

After getting a glimpse of graduate-level education, Valdes wanted to keep going after earning her bachelor’s degree in May 2023. She discussed it with her family.

“I told them I still want to go to school. I love being a student. I want to go as far as I can, as far as possible,” Valdes said. “I told them I believe when you’re Hispanic, you have to reach very high ground so you can be seen and really make changes.”

Her husband encouraged her to look at doctorate opportunities. It was a change from her early days at SAC, when she would hide to do homework because she didn’t want him to see her with her computer open.

Over the years, her experience helped him realize that he no longer wanted to be a truck driver, working long hours that took a toll on his physical and mental health. So, with her encouragement, he applied to SAC to major in engineering.

While visiting Stanford with the UTSA Pathways program, she met with a professor who encouraged her to apply to a PhD program there. She applied and received a full-ride scholarship to pursue a doctorate in education.

Both Valdes and her husband will work on their studies from their campus apartment while their children attend schools close by. Valdes can picture herself as a university professor in psychology or education and, someday, possibly as the U.S. secretary of education.

As she reaches new heights, Valdes is grateful for the start she got at SAC, where she felt welcomed as a non-traditional, first-generation student who spoke English as a second language.

“SAC gave me the foundation for the student I am today,” Valdes said.

500-level courses do not count toward MS/PhD core requirements; students who potentially could apply to the UMass PhD program should follow the MS/PhD degree requirements .

Passing Out of a Core Requirement

In some circumstances, it may be possible to pass or test out of a core requirement on the basis of equivalent coursework at another institution; iIt may also be possible to substitute a different advanced course for a core requirement. Such approval will be based on the content of that course as it compares to the content of the parallel course taught in this department. If you believe you should pass out of a core requirement, please download the Waiver of Core Requirements Form and contact the appropriate professor. The instructor will notify the Master's Program Director of his or her recommendation. If you are requesting a waiver of more than one core course, each professor must be aware of this and sign off on both waiver requests.  The Master's Program Director will then determine whether or not to accept that recommendation. (Such recommendations are rarely declined.) Note that passing out of a core course addresses the core requirement only—it does not absolve you from taking the corresponding credit hours. If you needed to take 18 credits and you passed out of one 3-credit core course, you still need to take 18 credits.

Additional Courses in Computer Sciences

The following courses may be applied toward the MS degree as non-cores:

  • Ethical Considerations in Computing (COMPSCI 508)
  • Fixing Social Media (COMPSCI 697M)
