Dentistry Personal Statement

Everyone has the right to a good smile. A smile can have a major effect on a person’s self-esteem, confidence and happiness. It would give me great satisfaction being able to have a positive effect on a patient’s quality of life by being able to influence these and many more factors. Dentistry as a prospective career path has always been a very appealing profession because I am interested in caring for people and also enjoy the creativity involved with the profession.

My work experience has further fuelled my desire to study dentistry, because it has shown me how rapidly expanding the dental sector which allows continuous learning. I have worked at Smiledent Dental Practice where I shadowed the dentists and the dental nurses. This experience has highlighted the importance between the balance of leadership and teamwork required to achieve the best treatment for the patients and the efficient running of a dental practice. Furthermore, I witnessed the need to gain the trust of the patient and build a patient-dentist relationship, to allow for a smooth successful treatment.

Apart from a dental practice, I have also volunteered at Haselbury Junior School organising activities for young children at an afterschool club for three months. Working with young children taught me to adapt my communication skills, using simple vocabulary and body language. During this time, it also gave me a sense of care and responsibility towards the children. This motivated me to work with people at the opposite end of the age spectrum. I therefore volunteered at The Haven Day Centre which was a humbling yet valuable experience. I enjoyed being a pillar of support to the elderly trying to entertain them and it was a warming experience to witness their joy.

Moreover, I have regularly attended St John Ambulance Cadets for the past three years. I am now a senior member in the division teaching younger peers first aid thoroughly enjoying the additional responsibility involved in nurturing others.

In addition, I have a keen academic interest. The transmission of diseases, prevention and immunology in Biology, has emphasised to me the significance of hygiene and how rapidly diseases can spread which is vital in the field of dentistry. In Chemistry, I have particularly enjoyed learning about molecular bonding enabling me to understand why particular materials have properties that make them suitable for their job. I have thoroughly enjoyed and flourished in the practical aspects of both subjects. The experiments have allowed me to put into practice/apply the knowledge I have acquired in lessons. Studying mathematics has improved my problem-solving ability acquiring practice to reach answers with a methodical yet flexible approach. In years 9 and 12, I was invited to attend lectures at the London Metropolitan University and the Royal Institution of Mathematics over a series of weekends. As a result, I had the opportunity to study branches of mathematics outside the syllabus which thoroughly challenged me. Additionally, geography has helped develop a creative aspect of academic life. In the human sector, I enjoyed the topic about smoking because it taught me the history and origins of smoking and the widespread effect it has on the body including the gums and teeth.

As part of my research, I have expanded my dental knowledge using several websites to gain extra information. I have been fascinated by crowns and root canal treatments because I am fond of the creativity involved such as choosing tooth colours, shape and material to ensure practicality for the patient and simultaneously rectify tooth damage.

Finally, from my work experience in a dental practice and I believe would thrive in such an environment.

Good Points Of The Personal Statement

Clear structure and the student gives good insight into his/her motivation for the study of dentistry as well as providing evidence for his/her personal, professional, and academic development. It becomes very clear that the student is dedicated to the subject and disciplined in the pursuit of his/her goals. Having a good experience from work attachments is a further strong point, demonstrating the student’s enthusiasm for the subject. The student also shows a good range of other achievements and activities that contribute to the overall, very positive, impression of a dedicated and well-rounded individual.

Bad Points Of The Personal Statement

At times, the style of the statement is somewhat unclear. Particularly towards the end, one gets the impression that the student ran either out of space or out of ideas as the different aspects raised in the text are not discussed to their full effect, making them significantly less relevant for the overall quality of the statement. This is particularly a problem with the conclusion which makes little to no sense.

UniAdmissions Overall Score:

An average statement that demonstrates some good and relevant work experience and patient exposure. Unfortunately, the statement is let down by some stylistic weaknesses that reduce the overall strength of the content, at least in some parts.

Selection For BDS Dentistry Interviews at King’s College London:

A-levels: Grade A*AA or higher, with at least an A in Biology or Chemistry, as well as an A or above in one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Psychology.

Personal Statement: The personal statement doesn’t form a significant element of the selection process, but it is always screened for evidence of commitment to dentistry, insight that you’ve gained into a profession, as well as the desirable skills of a dentist.

UCAT: UCAT scores form a significant element of the selection process at King’s. You will be ranked against other candidates based on a mix of our total UCAT score and achieved grades. The SJT is also taken into account when selecting students for dentistry interviews.

📊 What is the UCAT cut-off score to get an interview at King’s College London?

Each year KCL sets a UCAT cut-off score, depending on multiple factors, including the number fo students who applied and the average scores of the cohort. For the 2021 entry, the lowest UCAT score to get a dentistry interview at KCL was 2260 , while the interviewees’ mean was 2680 . However, don’t rely on this data too heavily, as the cut-off scores tend to change from year to year.

📤 When does KCL start sending interview invitations (BDS dentistry)?

First students can expect to get invited to dentistry interviews around late November 2022. In the past years, KCL sent out interview invitations on a rolling basis until early March of the application cycle.

• You are a 5th-year dental student 3-weeks into a surgical rotation in a new hospital. While shadowing one of the specialist dentists, you realise that they regularly omit washing hands between patients. What would you do in that scenario?
• A young mother comes with their 12-month-old child to your dental practice for a checkup. During the checkup, you discover that the girl’s pulp is severely damaged and infected and recommend root canal treatment. After hearing the name of the procedure the mother nervously takes the child’s hand and says “We don’t want any treatments. Ginny, let’s go home”. Both the mother and the girl are clearly anxious. However, you know that the treatment is necessary. How would you act in such a situation?

NHS & Hot Topics:

• How would you explain the Band system to a patient who only recently moved to the UK and doesn’t know anything about NHS dentistry?
• Why aren’t dental procedures free under the NHS, like all other medical treatments? In your opinion, should all dental procedures be free?

King’s College London Dentistry Interviews (2023 entry):

This year’s dentistry interviews at King’s College London will most likely take place between December 2022 and March 2023 .

💬 Interview format at King’s College London School of Dentistry:

For the 2022 entry, KCL conducted online panel interviews for their BDS dentistry course. The interviews were held by 2 interviewers and around 4 general, open-ended questions were asked. Each of the questions was marked out of 20. Half of the marks were given for the content of the answer and the other 10 for communication (including non-verbal aspects).

Before interviews were moved online in 2020, KCL conducted standard MMI interviews for candidates applying to dentistry. The MMIs at KCL usually involved 6 stations, each revolving around a different topic and each conducted by a different interviewer.

It is still not known what form will this year’s interviews take. Once it’s confirmed, it should be published on KCL’s official website and communicated to those invited to the interview in the invitation email.

🏆 King’s BDS Dentistry Statistics: How many offers?

Following approx. 350 interviews, KCL aims to give out offers to 175 students (reserving 15 offers for international students). This means that your chances of getting in once you’ve been invited for an interview at King’s are about 50%!

In the past years, the admissions team at King’s only sent back responses after all interviews have been conducted. Therefore, you can expect to hear back from KCL by the end of March 2023 at the earliest and May 2023 at the latest.

Your communication abilities (including your non-verbal communication) constitute as much as 50% of your total interview score. Instead of just talking about how passionate you are about dentistry or starting your studies at King’s, demonstrate it - keep an open posture, talk in a passionate tone and smile!

❄️  Make Your Answers Genuine!

Do not bend the truth trying to signal some of your extraordinary qualities, or skills or trying to fit in your work experience into every answer. The admissions panellists can easily recognise insincerity and don’t perceive it well.

🧠  Think Positively:

Whenever you feel stressed or anxious in your KCL dentistry interview, recall a situation when you were stressed, but you succeeded. Think of any relevant exams (GCSEs, UCAT), any competitions you took part in or anything that involved an obstacle which you eventually overcame. If you've done it once, you can do this again in your interview.

📖  Reflect On Your Work Experience:

The steps you took to find out more about dentistry, whether through volunteering, work experience or other activities, are an important element of your application. Before your dentistry interview at King’s, you should refresh your memory of what you did - dig out your personal statement, a reflective diary or some notes you took. Recall what you saw, what you learned and how it made you feel. Write down some questions based on your work experience and try answering them.

Does anyone know if KCL accept an Chemistry degree as meeting their criteria for graduate entry? (their website specifies bioscience degree but their admissions team won’t say if the would accept my degree as relevant).

The admissions website says degrees should have 2/3 biosciences content so it sounds like Biochemistry might be more suited than Chemistry.

We’ve searched far and wide to find personal statements from successful applicants all around the UK and asked them to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of their work for your own inspiration. Today’s subject is from Eera, who studies Dentistry at Cardiff.

Eera applied to study Dentistry back in 2019 at four amazing UK Dental Schools, including Manchester and King’s College London . She received offers from three out of her four choices of which she chose to study at Cardiff.

Cardiff Dentistry Personal Statement Example

Whole personal statement.

Teeth! When I think of dentistry, not just teeth come to mind but rather the blend of science, art and nurture, to improve overall oral health. Aged ten, my interest was ignited from seeing my dad’s relief from severe pain after his root canal treatment. Seeing the difference amazed me as to how dentistry could help and initiated my curiosity to know more. 

By spending time in NHS and private clinics, hospitals and a summer school run by King’s College dental students, I gained a clearer perspective of dentistry. My favourite seminar was on tooth carving and filling, illustrating the creative side of dentistry. Over five weeks, I saw fillings at a practice in Brighton, orthodontics, salivary gland surgery and more. My most inspirational memory was at Guy’s Hospital – a patient had sadly lost all his teeth from oropharyngeal cancer. Part of his definitive treatment plan was placing implants in his upper and lower palate requiring specialist intricacy from the surgeon. Post-surgery, I observed the patient’s relief and overwhelming happiness. With a now intact dentition, the patient was able to smile, improve his speech and ease in eating. This showed me that a well prepared and executed treatment plan can tackle multiple difficulties that may arise during dental treatment to improve quality of life.

As both a Chemistry Prefect and President of the Dental Society at my School, I have developed leadership, planning and commitment to engage other students. Seeing queues of students buying sugary drinks daily at my school, inspired me to write an article for my school newsletter, regarding their impact on caries and to raise awareness across the student body. As lead of DentSoc, I regularly give talks on various dental topics. My natural curiosity led to my participation in the Biology Olympiad and Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, which allowed me to apply my understanding to unfamiliar ideas. I completed my EPQ on the management of dental anxiety – (something I witnessed frequently during work experience) it saliently showed the importance of patient trust. Observing patient apprehension and how dentists dealt with this fascinated me.

Volunteering at the Links Centre for those with Downs Syndrome for two years has taught me empathy and mindfulness of the vast requirements of different children. I learnt that patience and a calm tone best engages those with anxiety or complex learning needs. I enjoy helping the wider community though my involvement with several charities, including CRUK and feeding the homeless with SWAT, where I learnt the value of human compassion. Completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition enriched my collaboration, preparing me for dentistry where teamwork is paramount when working alongside nurses and technicians. It has heightened my determination to discover innovative solutions, but the major lesson learnt was to never give up! My experiences as a tutor at Explore Learning, mentor at school and piano teacher enhance my ability to communicate, which is key in dentistry. I am adaptable and can tailor techniques to suit each pupil’s needs, encouraging them to achieve the best outcomes. I have great enthusiasm for music – playing piano at Diploma level. Performing in front of audiences requires confidence and handling pressure whilst maintaining control of hand movements – valuable skills for dentistry. I enjoy Bhangra dancing and performing at cultural events. On vacation I like to scuba dive.

I believe dentistry is the ideal career combining theoretical skills and scientific study, alongside my interpersonal skills from extra-curricular activities. This places me in a strong position to study dentistry. I love how a dentist can cherish the relationship they build with a patient over a long period of time, often with the reward of seeing the impact of their work immediately. I believe it will be a very fulfilling career and I am excited to play a key part in the future development of the profession.

Cardiff Dentistry Personal Statement Example Analysis

Now, let’s go section by section and see what Malikha has to say about what she wrote:  

INTRODUCTION

Introduction

I tried to be unique with my introduction. I think it is all about giving the reader something that they have not seen before. I though slipping in a personal experience with Dentistry would show that I have taken a keen interest since a young age having had my curiosity piqued. 

It possibly could have been a bit more personal than what I was with my introduction. I could have gone into further detail as to what I did to develop this curiosity. As well, although I tried to be unique in my introduction looking back I possibly just played into cliché and countless of other applicants probably started their personal statements in the same way. 

Paragraph 1

Work experience is a major factor when applying for Dentistry, so I knew including that I had done some was essential to my personal statement. I tried to write it so that tone came across a story being narrated rather than just listing and stating things in a more boring manner. 

On reflection, I have mainly spoken about what I saw and memories I have when I should have mentioned the skills that I developed. It comes across like I am bragging about the experience and I have disregarded the value of doing work experience. 

Paragraph 2

This was my opportunity to show off to the universities of all the things I have done that would showcase me as a strong Dental applicant. By showing that I was the Chemistry Prefect – with Chemistry being a required A-Level subject by all Dental Schools – and President of the Dental Society shows that I have been taking an active interest in Dentistry and have been nurturing it during my schooling. 

Generally, I’m fairly happy with this paragraph as it gets the points that I’m wanting to make across effectively. If anything, I would say I could have changed some of the wording and grammar so that some of the sentences flowed better. 

Paragraph 3

I drew upon the volunteering and charity work I did to show my empathy skills – a skill essential to being a dentist! I also explained how it links to Dentistry to show that I understand this. I mentioned that I play the piano as manual dexterity skills are a must for being a dentist, and by playing piano, I have excellent hand control.  

I really should have made this paragraph shorter, or split into two with one discussing my charity and voluntary work and the other on my personal interests. I do feel it comes across as a bit clunky bit I struggled to cut it down. If I had spent more time on my personal statement I probably would have been able to achieve this.

The summary of my skills is positive here. As well, I have mentioned CPD (continuous professional development) which is one of the incredible opportunities you have as a dentist just reinforces my passion and interest in the profession. 

My conclusion really comes across as informal. Perhaps making it more heartfelt would have been better, I could have done this by allowing my personality to show. I could have linked it back to my introduction and the story about my father would have been a better way to close it out. 

Final Thoughts

Being able to talk about the work experience I have done and linking it to how it benefits a career in Dentistry is something I’m very proud of. I feel I can be quite proud of my personal statement overall, given that it helped me receive offers from King’s College London, the University of Birmingham and Cardiff (who I of course ultimately decided to study at) which is no easy feat given how competitive Dentistry is. 

I’m not really the biggest fan of my conclusion, as it just doesn’t feel personal enough. I reassure myself with the fact that despite getting three out of four offers, you will likely never be completely happy with your personal statement and feel that there was something you could’ve done differently. 

So there you have it! This personal statement helped Eera get 3/4 offers in her application.

Everyone has different experiences and abilities, so you may not be able to relate to everything that was said in this personal statement. However, the information and advice provided by Eera is universal and will help any applicant write a better personal statement!

Our innovative entry route into dentistry is designed to enable graduates with honours degrees in biomedical-related science subjects and healthcare professionals with a degree, to study for a Dentistry BDS. Our course combines the very latest thinking in dental education with early clinical experience. You will be taught by internationally-renowned staff and exposed to a rich breadth of skills and knowledge in a diverse clinical environment.

Employability

A variety of career pathways are open to new dental graduates. The career path for many graduates is general practice, with others aiming to be consultants in the hospital dental service, senior clinical academics in a teaching hospital, or specialist practitioners. In most cases, newly qualified graduates will enter practice by way of Dental Foundation Training. Foundation Dentists (FDs) work in a Training Practice under supervision and have a day release course of lectures and demonstrations building on the undergraduate degree and giving instruction in all aspects of practice management. After this year, successful FDs can begin work as an associate in a practice.
