A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out how you will grow your business in order to improve your chances of success. Your business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Tutoring Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a tutoring service are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable. But they will want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business.

The second most common form of funding for a tutoring service is angel investors. Angel investors are wealthy individuals who will write you a check. How to write a business plan for a tutoring service.

Your business plan should include 10 sections as follows:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of tutoring service business you are operating and the status; for example, are you a startup, do you have a tutoring service that you would like to grow, or are you operating a network of tutoring businesses?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the tutoring industry. Discuss the type of tutoring you are offering. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target market. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of tutoring you are offering.

For example, you might operate one of the following types:

  • Exam preparation : this type of tutoring company provides exam preparation and training materials for high school students, undergraduate students, and recent college graduates preparing for college entrance exams such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, etc.
  • Primary school tutoring : this type of tutoring specializes in helping students in K-12. This type of tutoring is typically subject-specific – math, literature, history, etc.
  • Occupational and advanced academics tutoring : agencies may sometimes specialize in occupational certification for those entering the workforce as engineers, mechanics, technicians, etc.

In addition to explaining the type of tutoring you provide, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to questions such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include placement goals you’ve reached, the number of new contracts, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the tutoring industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the tutoring industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section:

  • How big is the tutoring industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5-10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your tutoring service? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: elementary students, middle school students, high school students, etc.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of tutoring you offer. Clearly, high school students would want different subject tutoring and would respond to different marketing promotions than professional certification clients.

Try to break out your target market in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most tutors primarily serve customers living in the same city or town, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target market. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other tutoring services.

Indirect competitors are other options customers may use that aren’t direct competitors. This includes peers, teachers, or graduate students. You need to mention such competition to show you understand that not everyone who needs help with grade improvement and test preparation will hire a tutoring company.

  • What types of tutoring services do they offer?
  • What is their pricing structure (premium, low, tiered, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regard to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide superior services?
  • Will you provide services that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you make it easier or faster for customers to engage your services?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a tutoring service, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product: in the product section you should reiterate the type of tutoring that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific courses or subject help you will be offering. For example, in addition to high school level math tutoring, will you provide GED preparation, or will you be specializing in certification preparation for a specific occupation?

Price: Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place: Place refers to the location of your tutoring services. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your tutoring office located next to a high school or near a retail district, etc? Discuss how your location might provide a steady stream of customers.

Promotions: the final part of your tutoring marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to schools and teachers
  • Reaching out to local websites
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your tutoring service, such as serving customers, attracting future applications, processing paperwork, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect your 100 th student to successfully improve their grades, or when you hope to reach $X in sales. It could also be when you expect your Xth student to excel at a specific exam, or when you expect to launch a new location.

Management Team

To demonstrate your tutoring business’ ability to succeed as a business, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in teaching or tutoring. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in education and/or successfully running small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your tutoring office, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $100,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt. For example, let’s say a company approached you with a $100,000 contract for helping employees achieve certification, that would cost you $50,000 to fulfill. Well, in most cases, you would have to pay that $50,000 now for curriculum, employee salaries, etc. But let’s say the company didn’t pay you for 180 days. During that 180 day period, you could run out of money.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing your tutoring service:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment like software, office equipment, etc.
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your office design blueprint or location lease.

If you plan on making a sustainable income for yourself or perhaps for a larger service group then you need to consider a tuition business model that will work for your niche.

Tuition Value Proposition

A value proposition is a statement that explains the benefits that your students can expect when learning from you, as opposed to the competition.

THE Scottish TUC urged City of Glasgow College bosses to “see sense” today after they rejected proposals to save the institution’s trade union Education Centre.

Unions and campaigners vowed to step up their push to save the centre, which has helped educate thousands of trade union reps, shop stewards and members over 30 years.

In May college managers announced the centre was earmarked for closure, claiming it was financially unsustainable.

They have now rejected an alternative business plan put forward by the STUC this summer.

A spokesperson for the Campaign to Save The Glasgow Trade Union Education Centre said: “There is no educational or financial reason for closing the centre.

“With his actions, college principal Paul Little has shown his true colours. He is an anti-trade union principal who will do anything he can to undermine the trade union movement.”

STUC general secretary Roz Foyer said the federation had written to the principal and Cabinet Secretary today outlining its concerns at the lack of progress in discussions.

“We have presented a viable plan which would generate a surplus for the centre and provide the foundation to consolidate the future of the trade union centre, helping sustain it for many years to come,” she added.

A City of Glasgow College spokesman said: “The TUC Education Centre is currently operating at an annual loss to the college of circa £150,000, and unless additional, long-term funding is forthcoming it is financially unsustainable.”

“In our discussions with the STUC and TUC they have not yet been able to come up with a viable plan to help safeguard the Centre's future, but further talks are scheduled and we remain hopeful that an agreement can be reached which makes the Centre financially sustainable.”

Biden asks Supreme Court to lift block on student loan repayment plan

President Joe Biden's administration has asked the Supreme Court to lift a block on the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan , which is designed to ease the burden of student loan debt for millions of borrowers.

Biden introduced SAVE after the Supreme Court struck down Biden's student loan forgiveness plan . The White House said that the SAVE plan could lower borrowers' monthly payments to zero dollars, reduce monthly costs in half and save those who make payments at least $1,000 yearly. Additionally, borrowers with an original balance of $12,000 or less will receive forgiveness of any remaining balance after making 10 years of payments.  

Legal challenges from Republican-led states resulted in a temporary block of the program until the litigation concluded. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a preliminary injunction blocking the SAVE student loan repayment plan. The block prevents the Department of Education from offering the plan while litigation continues. In the meantime, borrowers enrolled in the SAVE Plan are being moved into forbearance while the Biden administration defends the plan in court.

"We remain committed to supporting borrowers and fighting for the most affordable repayment options possible for millions of people across the country," U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement. "Already, we've approved $169 billion in relief for nearly 4.8 million Americans entitled to relief under various programs, including teachers, veterans, and other public servants; students who were cheated by their colleges; borrowers with disabilities; and more. President Biden, Vice President Harris, and I are committed to fighting for college affordability for all."

PRIVATE STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS: 7 OPTIONS

Less than half of all borrowers make payments

Roughly 40% of borrowers are current on their student loan payments since they resumed in October following a three-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a recent Government Accountability Office report .

As of January 31, 2024, nearly a quarter of borrowers in repayment (7.3 million) were enrolled in the SAVE repayment plan. Because of the court order injunction, these borrowers will not have to make payments on their student loans while the litigation is ongoing and will not accrue interest on their loans during the forbearance. 

However, the time spent in forbearance won't count towards Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) forgiveness. PSLF forgives federal student loans after 10 years of qualifying payments, or 120 payments, for borrowers who work full-time for a qualifying government or nonprofit organization. IDR plans have a loan forgiveness benefit after a required repayment term of 20 or 25 years, depending on the plan.

"This injunction, if allowed to stand, would harm borrowers who have dutifully repaid their loans for up to 25 years by denying forgiveness that has been available under law for three decades," Cardona said.

Poll shows fewer adults support debt forgiveness 

According to a recent AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs poll , less than half of Americans (39%) said they supported federal student debt cancellation.  

Americans were more likely to support forgiveness of some or all of a student loan debt in certain situations, like if the borrower was defrauded or misled by their school or in cases where the borrower made on-time payments for 20 years or the loans accrued more interest than originally borrowed.  Other reasons Americans may support debt cancellation is if the borrowers attended school at an institution that left them with a large amount of debt compared to their income or if they are experiencing financial hardship.  

"In recent years, more than a million borrowers who were defrauded by the schools they attended have received debt relief from the government, and the survey shows that forgiveness under such circumstances is supported by a majority of Americans," University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy Associate Professor Lesley Turner said. "Although existing forgiveness policies may receive less attention than broad-based student loan forgiveness plans, such as the one overturned by the Supreme Court in 2023, they are an important source of relief for the most vulnerable borrowers – those who took on debt but did not necessarily benefit from their investment in the ways they hoped."

Biden ‘SAVE’ Student Loan Debt Relief Plan Faces Appeals Court

Three states faced questioning from a federal appeals court Wednesday about their standing to challenge the Biden administration’s student loan debt forgiveness program, while the US Education Department was pressed on the impact of a separate circuit ruling temporarily halting the program.

Snail farm in city office sparks tax avoidance probe

A city centre office building has been home to a snail farm for more than a year, in what council bosses allege is an attempt to avoid tax.

About 15 covered crates - containing as few as two snails each - have been kept on the lower ground floor of 9 Dale Street, in Liverpool, since 2023.

Under current law, this could qualify as "agricultural use" and this part of the building would arguably be exempt from business rates.

The firm renting the space said it was a legitimate snail farming operation.

The company, Snai1 Primary Products 2023 Ltd, shares its sole director, Terence Ball, with a company called BoyceBrook based in Ribchester, Lancashire.

BoyceBrook’s website says its team "has a proven track record of minimising the liability for empty property rates" and describes the company as the "Canceller of the Exchequer".

In 2021, the High Court ruled that a snail farm tenancy deal between a landlord in Leeds and the management company Crusader, where Mr Ball was a director, was a "sham".

'Snail orgies'

Each crate contains two snails, according to L’Escargotiere, another company operated by Mr Ball, also based in Ribchester.

Its website says the number of snails per crate is kept to a minimum to avoid "cannibalism, group sex and snail orgies".

Mr Ball – the son of the late North West shoe shop owner and local personality Tommy Ball - told BBC News that 15 crates containing two snails each could "create 1000 snail eggs, in the right environment".

L’Escargotiere says it sells the snails in 1kg bags – the weight of about 200 snails - for £14 a bag.

Other snail farmers around the UK told BBC News they could not see how so few snails could make for a viable trade.

"You need thousands of snails, otherwise there’s no business," one said.

Another said snail farming generally involved "feeding and cleaning daily".

A representative of Mr Ball told the BBC that there are "regular, routine care procedures" and that the snails are "replaced every three to four weeks".

The 2021 High Court ruling found that Crusader, also operated by Mr Ball, had "agreed to implement a scheme designed to achieve [the property owner’s business rates] avoidance objective".

The owner of the buildings, Isle Investments, agreed to pay Crusader 20% of what the business rates would have cost them.

The Court of Appeal upheld the High Court ruling that the tenancies were "a sham".

Tax avoidance is not a criminal offence, unlike tax evasion. It has been estimated that various schemes to minimise and avoid tax across the UK cost about £1.8bn in 2023.

Business rates are collected by councils and then redistributed by government to local authorities and used to pay for services.

The cost of rates for the building would normally be about £61,000 a year, but it is not known whether the snail farm lease is for the entire complex or just the lower ground floor.

Mr Ball did not respond to the council’s suggestion the snail farm was a tax avoidance scheme, but did say the firm had told the council and the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) when it rented the space and "provided full details of the current legislation required for exemption, which unfortunately is mostly ignored".

British Virgin Islands

Land Registry records show the building was bought by Finchley Land Ltd for £5.4m in 2014.

The company is registered in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, and its main shareholder is Iraqi businessman Namir El-Akabi, a construction and logistics tycoon involved in the rebuilding of Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein.

The BBC does not know whether Mr El-Kabi played any part in, or had knowledge of, the lease granted to Snai1 Primary Products 2023 Ltd.

Mr Ball did not respond to the BBC’s enquiry as to whether his firms received any payment for occupying the lower ground floor of the building.

The BBC has attempted to contact Mr El-Akabi for comment but has received no response.

A Liverpool City Council spokesman said: "The misuse of the agricultural exemption with the use of ‘snail farms’ in commercial premises is a business rates avoidance tactic that has been attempted in Liverpool.

Dubai to have 39 new schools, universities and early education centres in 2024-25

Private education in Dubai continues to grow with 39 new establishments in the coming academic year

Dubai’s private education sector continues to flourish, with 39 new schools, universities, and early childhood centre set to open during the 2024-25 academic year.

The new openings include five UK curriculum schools – Dubai British School Jumeirah, GEMS Founders School Dubai South, New Dawn Private School in Muhaisnah, Hampton Heights International School in Twar, and Springfield International School in Al Aweer – and one French curriculum school – Lycée Francais Jean Mermoz South in Al Barsha South.

The new schools add more than 16,000 new seats to the private school sector at a range of fee levels.

Twenty-nine new early childhood centres are also due to open in the new academic year, in addition to seven ECCs that opened their doors in June and July, including the first ECC to offer the Chinese curriculum. The majority of new ECCs will offer the UK Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.

The higher education landscape is also expanding with four new institutions licensed by KHDA set to open during the 2024-25 academic year. Three of them – SKEMA Business School from France, Plekhanov Russian University of Economics from Russia, and Symbiosis International University from India – offer bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes.

Neohorizon School of Business – a partnership between the UAE and China – offers a dedicated master’s degree in business.

Aisha Miran, Director General of KHDA said: “The growth in Dubai’s private education landscape reflects the emirate’s commitment to providing high quality, diverse educational options for learners at all stages.

“By welcoming these new schools, early childhood centres, and higher education institutions, we’re not just adding numbers, but creating more opportunities for our children and youth.

“We are committed to strengthening Dubai’s reputation as a leading destination for high quality education and remain dedicated to supporting the needs of our students, educators, and families.

“Together, we will ensure that every child in Dubai has access to the best possible education in an environment that nurtures their potential and prepares them for the future.”

The city’s private education sector currently comprises of 220 schools, 274 early childhood centres, and 38 higher education institutions.

All three sectors saw record growth in enrolment during the 2023-24 academic year.
