First thing’s first: what do you need to get started as a freelance writer? If you want to get paid writing, you need to have a few things. You can’t just start applying to gigs or pitching articles with your college essay from your freshman year. (Please don’t do this!)

However, the good news is you don’t need any experience to get paid to write. You don’t need a degree either, though I will defend my English major until the end of time.

Here’s what you really need to get paid for your writing:

• A freelancer website: A writer’s website is a great way to show off your experience, your writing portfolio, and even your own blog. I break down how to create your own portfolio in this post .
• Writing niche: It helps to know what topics you want to cover. This is known as a writing niche, and it should be something you have a lot of experience covering. For instance, I’m a technical and digital marketing writer .
• Writing samples: It should come as no surprise that you also need some samples to work with. Clients will want to see that you can walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Having 3-5 samples in your niche should be enough!
• Time: Last but not least, you’ll need some time to apply to these gigs, negotiate with clients, and actually get paid to write. These things likely won’t happen overnight, and that’s perfectly normal.

How Much Should You Charge as a Freelance Writer?

When you’re getting paid to write, you need to know what you want to charge! What you’ll charge as a freelance writer will depend on your experience level, the job type, and the niche.

In the writing world, it’s common for writers to get paid either by project or by word instead of hourly. For instance, if you’re writing a 1000 word article at $0.06 a word, you’ll earn 60$ for this. It’s up to you to determine how long this project will take and whether this is worth your time.

There are no hard and fast rules about what to charge when you’re getting paid to write. As long as you’re comfortable with the amount, it’s fair. Just make sure you’ve valued your work and that you know when to raise your rates !

• Upwork : Upwork is an online platform for freelancers, and it’s a great place to get paid for writing. If you create a winning Upwork profile and proposal, this can be a lucrative place to make money online.
• Pro Bloggers Job Board : Another option is Pro Bloggers Job Board, a curated job board with a lot of opportunities in many different niches. They’re open to all experience levels, so this is a great place to search. I recommend setting alerts to your email.
• Wellfound : Previously known as Angel List, Wellfound is a platform specifically designed for finding jobs with startups. You’ll find startups of all sizes, mostly from the USA, and a lot of options for remote or contract work. Search “content writing” gigs to find paid writing jobs and set your search to “contract positions.”

Lifestyle Publishers and Magazines

Another option is to pitch yourself directly to well-known publishers and magazines. While you’ll need to work under an editor, these are an option if you have a story idea in mind. Here are some that fit into the general lifestyle niche:

• Readers Digest : RD is currently accepting 100-word story submissions. They want you to send them a story about yourself in 100 words or fewer. (Pay $100)
• DAME : If you have an essay on your experience with politics, culture, or societal issues, DAME wants to hear your story. DAME is open to essays that features a strong voice. Pay is dependent on topic, experience, and negotiation and begins at $350+ per post.

How Do You Pitch Writing Jobs Online?

Finally, let’s talk about how to actually pitch those writing jobs above. You need to know how to make an impression on your prospective clients so they trust you. Sometimes you’ll be talking to HR managers, marketing managers, editors, or even business owners directly. You need to know how to sell yourself!

When in doubt, keep it short. These editors/managers get a lot of pitches, most likely, and they don’t have time to read through your life story.

My basic formula is usually greeting + short bio + my experience in relation to the gig/topic + pitch idea + sample links . Here’s a sample that I’ve used in the past:

Hi [Editor’s Name], I’m a full-time digital marketing writer from Orlando, FL. I’m excited about your call for submissions on email marketing since this is something I have 3+ years of experience in. As the Lead Content Specialist at an Orlando-based marketing agency, I was fully in charge of 10+ email campaigns at any given time. Because of this experience, I would like to pitch the following ideas: X, Y, and Z for your blog. Because I know quality content speaks for itself, I’ll link my most recent work to this email. I look forward to learning more about your publication needs! Signature

It can really be that simple! Here are a few helpful pointers to help you get your paid writing pitch noticed every time:

• Read the contributor guidelines carefully! Make sure you include everything they asked for.
• Link any published work when possible, even if it’s only to your personal blog.

One way to make easy money online as a freelance writer is to write about freelance writing! The Barefoot Writer is a magazine dedicated to helping freelancers start their businesses and work from home. Depending on the content you submit, the pay can range from $100-$300.

VQR is a literary journal that focuses on excellent writing. They look for unpublished poems, short fiction (up to 8000 words), and nonfiction (up to 9000 words).

The pay rate is $200 per poem and $0.25 per word for prose but book reviews could earn you $500 ! Their submissions aren’t always open, so it’s best to check to see if they are accepting any .

How to Have a Successful Pitching Process

Applying to any of these sites involves sending a pitch .

A writing pitch is an email or message you send to the site’s editor explaining your article idea and how it would be perfect for their publication.

When you write a pitch, you don’t want to go overboard!

Pitches need to be concise and outline your story idea while explaining why they should pay you to write it.

The idea of pitching can be intimidating and don’t worry if you don’t get it right the first time – or the first few times.

Once you start pitching for these sites that pay, you’ll get better at selling yourself and your content as a freelance writer.

To get you started, here are some tips for successful pitching :

• Learn about the website. If you’re going to pitch to a site, you need to know who they are and what type of content they are looking for. You can check out their about page, Linkedin profile, and social media accounts.
• Write a compelling subject line. These types of sites probably receive tons of submissions in their inbox so you want to make sure yours stands out! Capitalize keywords and try to highlight your expertise.
• Link to your portfolio. Because you’re not sending a full article, the editor or recipient of the pitch may want to get a sense of your writing style.
• Personalize each pitch. I know there are a ton of pitch templates out there but you don’t want to simply copy and paste generic emails for every site you submit to. Start with a personal greeting and tailor each pitch to the site you are sending it to.

Lastly, you want to send a pitch that showcases your skills and confidence.

Never state that you are a new writer or that you’re new to a certain field. Also, avoid phrases like “I hope” and “I think”.

Student paper writing is a form of ghostwriting in which a student hires a writer to do a term or research paper, and the student gets credit for it. The paid essay writing service has been around for years, but, like other freelance jobs, the Internet has made it easier for writers and students to connect.

As a freelance writer looking for work, you may have encountered these jobs on writing websites, work-at-home job boards, or ads from harried students on Craigslist. If you have a website to promote your freelance business, a student may have contacted you directly.

Either way, the student paper industry is a real and viable way to make money as a freelance writer, if you have the right background and skills, and don't mind the questionable ethics behind it.

Students Who Need Academic Essays Written

Initially, the Internet made it easy for students to post completed essays online that other students could take and use as their own. Savvy teachers and professors caught on to this, and the rise of plagiarism checkers forced students, who didn't want to write their papers, to find an alternative.

There are several types of students who may hire writers to do their papers for them. In general, they fall into one or more of the categories below:

• Procrastinators who waited too long to get started on their paper: These students tend to contact you at the last minute, which means you can often charge more for rushed assignments.
• Lacking self-confidence to tackle a big assignment: These are students who tend to reach out ahead of time, with a little leeway on the due date.
• Students for which English is a second language : For these students, writing papers for U.S. schools is difficult.
• Lazy students: These students lack the drive to do the work themselves and have the money to pay someone to do it for them.

Why Get Paid to Write Student Papers?

Why would a writer agree to write a student's paper? Looking past the ethical considerations, there are several reasons a writer might add academic writing to their menu of services.

• Enjoy academic topics: If you did well in school, remember the books you read and lessons you learned, and like to research, then writing student essays would allow you to use what you've already learned.
• Pays decently compared to content writing: Writing student papers usually pays several hundred dollars. This, of course, depends on the level you're writing at, how long the paper is, and the time you have to write it. On average you'll be paid $9 to $15 per page (double spaced), more for graduate-level papers.
• Steady work: Freelance writing work can ebb and flow, which can make it stressful during ebb times. However, there seems to always be students who need writers for their essays and papers.
• Quick payment: Some writing gigs can take weeks, if not months, to pay you. Student writing through a company usually pays weekly.
• Flexible work: You can work when and where you want, as long as you meet the deadline

Along with writing papers, there are services that involve providing research and editing help, especially with theses and dissertations. This type of work is more palatable for writers who don't feel writing students' papers is ethical. However, thesis and dissertation work usually requires an advanced degree.

Finding Student Paper Writing Jobs

The safest and easiest way to write student papers for pay is to go through one of the many companies that offer this service to students. Each will have their own criteria, but in most cases, you'll, at the very least, need a:

• College degree or higher
• Sample of your writing
• Knowledge of style guides , such as APA and MLA
• Experience in formatting footnotes, citations, and bibliography

When hired, you'll sign a contract that outlines what you're paid and when.

You can offer student essay writing directly through your freelance writing business, as well. In that case, you just need to prove to the student you can do the work, and arrange payment through PayPal or check, delivering the work via email in a Word or other document format that the student can edit.

For the writer, there are a few challenges in not using a company. For one thing, the person hiring you is a cheater, and if they'd cheat at school, he or she might try to cheat you. For that reason, you should demand full payment upfront, or not deliver the paper until the payment is made.

Why You Shouldn't Write Student Papers

There are challenges and cons to writing student papers for pay. For one, especially for college entrance exam essays, it can be difficult to match a student’s tone and voice. You may be a talented writer, but it stands to reason that your customer is not. How polished, exactly, should this work be without giving away that the student isn't the writer? This will depend on the topic and level of the course the paper is written for. Some companies frame their service as "model" papers, with the expectation that the student will take the paper and tweak it, sort of like private label rights, to make it their own.

Another issue is the research or reading inherent in college-level work. You might be able to write a three-page essay in an hour, earning $45 per hour, but if you have to read a book or other literature first, or do research, that will significantly lower your per-hour earnings.

The main consideration in this type of work is ethics. A writer who does this type of work is helping a student cheat. While not illegal, the freelance writer should understand that this doesn't mean it’s free of consequences. The student risks expulsion, if discovered. For the writer, it can hurt his or her reputation. Ask yourself what your cost would be, were it known, that you engage in this kind of work.

As mentioned earlier, some service providers get around the ethics question by insisting that the writing they sell to students are unique model papers that the student is supposed to use to help them learn. But chances are good that the student puts their name on the delivered product and turns it in.

Of course, as a freelance writer, you need to pay the bills, and so if you're in a bind, and need to make decent money quickly, student paper writing can help. Especially if you consider that the student is going to pay someone to write the paper. Why not you?

Alternatives to Writing Student Essays

If you're not comfortable with this type of freelance writing work, you do have other options, such as:

• Book reviewing : If you enjoy reading and writing about what you read, this is the ideal freelance job.
• Editing, indexing, and research support to Masters and Doctoral students: In this case, you're helping a student with the paper they've researched and will write or have written.
• Ghostwriting: Similar to student writing, you're providing content that someone else will take credit for, but it's not academic cheating.
• Article writing : There are many magazines and websites that accept long-form articles that are well-researched, interesting, and provocative. Check the Writer’s Market book or website, or do a search within your particular niche area.

The bottom line is that essay and term paper writing is a service that students are willing to pay for, and it’s probably not going away any time in the near future. You have to decide for yourself if this is a freelance writing option you feel comfortable tackling.
