Aim: This project is regarding Sickle Cell Anemia and its Prevention. The most frequent cause of sickle cell disease is sickle cell anaemia (SCD). SCD is a severe condition in which the body creates red blood cells that are sickle-shaped. “Sickle-shaped” means that like a crescent, the red blood cells are shaped.

Theory: There are disc-shaped regular red blood cells and they look like doughnuts without holes in the middle. They pass through the blood vessels with ease. An iron-rich protein called haemoglobin is present in red blood cells. There are stiff and sticky sickle cells. The blood vessels in the brain and other organs appear to block blood flow. Pressure and organ injury can be caused by the blocked blood supply. It may also increase the risk of infection as well.

They cross the arctic circle from the Indian Ocean and reach the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, only to be caught up in the air circulation over India. These south-east trade winds are of oceanic origin.

Aim: By applying manures and fertilisers to the soil of crop fields, the lack of plant nutrients and organic matter in the soil is compensated for. The primary sources of plant nutrients are both manure and fertiliser, so they are used in crop growing.

Theory: In addition to water CO2 and sunlight plants, no elements were required for their growth. These are classified as nutrient elements. From the salt of these elements found in the soil, plants receive their elements. But soil in these elements becomes low after prolonged cultivation of plants. The material applied to the soil to cover up the shortage of the vital components was called fertilisers by increasing soil fertility.

Manures are fertilisers that are natural. They are bulky sources of organic matter that provide small amounts of nutrients but huge amounts of organic matter. Manures include farmhouse compost (FYM), manure, biofertilizers, agricultural residues, etc.

Vermicomposting is a method wherein biodegradable wastes are used to make manure, which can be used as an alternative for chemical fertilizer. It's a process in which earthworms and microbes decompose the plant waste into manure. Vermicomposting is done in the presence of water, proper climatic conditions, and pH. There are two methods of vermicomposting, the Pit method (organic matter collected in cemented pits) and the Bed method (beds of organic matter are prepared).

The bed method is a prominent method, and one would get to learn a lot in it. One can use a bin and can store earthworms and other waste in it. The container should be covered with the help of polythene or dry grass, as it will help to maintain the temperature.

Blood Groups

Blood plays a significant role in the transportation of oxygen to the cells. Karl Landsteiner invented the ABO blood group system. He explained that there are four different blood groups, A, B, AB, and O. These blood groups are differentiated by the presence of antibodies and antigens, on the surface of the red blood cells . 

The system O blood group is the universal donor, while the AB blood group is the universal recipient. Also, it's essential to match the blood group of the donor and the provider, or else it can be life-threatening. The blood group of any individual is studied by the genes which are inherited from the parents. It's a very exciting biology project for class 11 because there is lots of lab work and lab equipment handling. 

Blood Pressure

Being a fluid connective tissue, blood helps in the transportation of oxygen to all parts of the body from the heart, with the help of blood vessels called arteries. The reading of blood pressure is given by the systolic pressure and by the diastolic pressure.

Mitosis in the Onion Root Tip Cells

There are in all Five Stages in Mitosis: prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. The division of cytoplasm is known as cytokinesis, which usually occurs in the telophase. In this project, the student will learn every stage of mitosis along with the different events. 

This project is even more exciting as one will prepare their own specimen of onion root to visualize mitosis.

The human body requires different vitamins to fight off a disease or to make the body function well. There are 13 vitamins, but the sources of these vitamins are very vast. Basically, there are two types of vitamins, fat-soluble and water-soluble. Transpiration of Plants

1. Behaviors of a Pea Plant

This classic science experiment by the famous Gregor Mendel observes pea starts for about 6 weeks to see their development and plant growth. This course focuses on the processes that occur in biological systems. Students will learn concepts and theories as they conduct investigations in the areas of cellular biology, microbiology, genetics, the anatomy of mammals, and the structure of plants and their role in the natural environment. Emphasis will be placed on the practical application of concepts, and on the skills needed for further study in various branches of the life sciences and related fields. Prerequisite: Science, Grade 10, Academic or Applied

B. Cellular Biology

B1.1 evaluate the effectiveness of medical devices and technologies that are intended to aid cellular functions or processes (e.g., insulin infusion pump, chemotherapy) [AI, C]

B1.2 analyse the effects of environmental factors on cellular processes that occur in the human body (e.g., the effect of lead on nerve cells; the effect of electromagnetic radiation on brain cells) [AI, C]

B2.1 use appropriate terminology related to cellular biology, including, but not limited to: macromolecule, passive transport, active transport, catalyst, and fluid mosaic model [C]

Biology involves the study of living organisms and their organisation levels, as shown below. During year 11 you will learn about the structure and function of organisms as well as develop an understanding of the Earth’s biodiversity and the effect of evolution. You will need to be able to develop hypotheses, as well as design and evaluate experiments.

Year 11 biology establishes the foundation that year 12 will build upon. Some questions in the final HSC exam will directly relate to what you learned in Year 11!

What type of questions can I expect on my assessments?

In exams, you will be answering multiple choice and long answer questions that test your knowledge of the subject, but there will also be questions that cover multiple parts of the syllabus or ask you to apply your knowledge to a new scenario.

‘Working scientifically’ skills will also be assessed. You may be asked to do research on a particular area or do an experiment in class under exam conditions.

You need to be able to construct and interpret graphs and recognise good experimental design. A depth study will be required. This is sometimes given as an assignment where the student looks in more depth at a specific topic (e.g. punctuated equilibrium) and may involve presentations, research, fieldwork, experiments or collecting data.

What are some common student issues?

Many students do not realise they will need to apply their understanding of year 11 concepts to year 12 (e.g. evolution or organelles).

They do not put enough effort into year 11 and start year 12 without a good foundation.

Some areas of Year 11 Biology that students typically struggle with include:

  • Coping with the large volume of content covered in Year 11 compared to Year 10.
  • Reading and interpreting graphs and tables.
  • Answering the question rather than writing down everything they know.
  • Remembering to look at how many marks a question is worth so they know how much to write.
  • Designing an experiment and understanding the different variables involved.
  • Applying their understanding of processes (such as evolution or osmosis) to new scenarios.
