Bachelor/Master Thesis at Oldenburg University

These rules apply for all theses assessed by Prof. Sonntag as the first reviewer. While working on the bachelor’s thesis, you participate in two seminars, namely the accompanying research seminar (Forschungsseminar) and the Bachelor/Master seminar (Oberseminar). When writing a master’s thesis, you only participate in the Bachelor/Master seminar.

Research Seminar / Forschungsseminar

In the research seminar ( Forschungsseminar 2.01.801-D ), we discuss fundamental topics of a basic research proposal:

  • A synopsis of the proposed project, including the rationale for the proposed research, a statement of specific aims and objectives (hypotheses or research questions), the experimental approaches to be used, and the potential significance of the research.
  • Specific aims, to provide a clear, concise point-by-point summary of the aims of the research proposed.
  • Background and significance: You explain background information necessary to understand the proposed project and its significance in relation to long-term research objectives.

Also, you provide a tentative sequence or timetable for the investigation. As a result, you provide a 20-minutes related work talk (plus discussion) .

Bachelor/Master Seminar / Oberseminar

In the Bachelor/Master seminar ( Oberseminar 2.01.AM-56 ), we focus on the research question. (1) The preliminary data collection and qualitative evaluation: You can succinctly describe preliminary experiments that justify the rationale and/or demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed research. (2) Experimental Design and Methods: We discuss in detail the experimental design and procedures together. The technical architecture may belong to this experimental design. Master students provide a 20-minutes related work talk within three months. As a final result, you give a 30-minutes final presentation (plus discussion) before submitting the thesis.

Development of the Communication Training Program ZAK – Zusammen Aktiv Kommunizieren – for Persons with Hearing loss and their Significant Others

["eprint_fieldname_abstract_plus" not defined]

Introduction: In Germany there is a lack of evidence-based communication training programs for persons with hearing loss. The deficiency was taken up by the study objective to develop a German version of the communication training program Active Communication Education (ACE) (Hickson et al., 2015), which meets the needs of the study participants. Intervention: A preliminary German ACE version that was closely translated from the original ACE program. Methods: An intervention study (pre-post-design) was conducted with 49 participants. Qualitative Data were analysed by qualitative content analysis. Within-group comparisons and effect sizes were calculated for the quantitative pre-post measures. Results: After attending the preliminary German ACE version communication strategy usage showed a significant improvement. Qualitative Data revealed increasing self-efficacy and positive impact on everyday life communication. Based on the study results the final German Version “ZAK – Zusammen Aktiv Kommunizieren” was developed.

Funding Opportunities for Doctoral Students

If you have completed your studies and you are thinking about doing doctoral research or if you have recently decided to do doctoral studies, we recommend that you read the essay Ich will promovieren (German only) to get a general overview.

Detailed information related to doing doctoral studies can be found on the website of the Graduate Academy of the University of Oldenburg.

A doctorate is a very important point in your academic career and in your life. You should, therefore, pay the greatest attention to financing your doctorate. You can finance your doctorate with

  • a position as a scientific assistant,
  • a position or a fellowship in a postgraduate programme,
  • or an external scholarship fund.

For major funding organizations, such as the EU, DFG, etc., you are, however, only eligible to apply after obtaining your doctorate. Nevertheless, there are many ways for you to finance your doctorate, e.g. to apply with a foundation or one of the talent development programmes.

If you have no or little experience with writing such proposals, please refer to Wie stelle ich einen Antrag? (German only)

Under doctoral funding , we have compiled a selection of funding and research options that does not claim to be complete.
