“A Brief Assignment”

Adam Kinyua

Adam Kinyua

I remember well, it was in 2007, a Friday afternoon. I cannot exactly remember the month, but I know the grass in the grazing fields had started turning grey and there was plenty of it for my family’s livestock and that of our neighbors and friends. I was grazing across R. Munyari near Kinyingiri primary school as I had always done since I was seven.

There is nothing particularly special about the fields beside the fact that a lot happened there that helped change my life and that Kathongi, the beautiful Kathongi, la Belle, usually walked the very same way on her way to and from places she usually went. I liked watching her pass by. She was a beauty, and I believed she was in need of a boyfriend, me.

Well, I am not going to write about how the grazing fields taught me the ways of resiliency, or how to approach the village girls such as Kathongi as they passed by carrying loads of mangoes on their back on their way home from the fertile fields of Tumbura. It is this particular afternoon that I flipped open the last page of the novel “ A Brief Assignment ” by Ayub Ndii, a Kenyan fiction author.

The book was thrilling in its own special way. It presented a beautiful art of how to commit perfect crimes. The setting presented itself in my young mind in a way that I will never forget until I fade into nothingness. Its smart African characters and familiar terms gave it more life. The book had a sad ending. The main character, who was the only survivor in the gang, raped a virgin girl and impregnated her before the train chopped him into three pieces. The mysterious ending left me with unanswered questions that I have had for the past 12 years. Then, I came across “ Then she was gone ” by Lisa Jewell.

The novel begins by presenting Ellie, a 15-year-old virgin girl. In the eyes of her mother, Laurel, Ellie was a golden girl. She had a whole life ahead of her. She went to school, made friends, and completed her assignment on time. Her mother hired a math tutor to help with her daughter’s studies at home.

Then, in a blink of an eye, Ellie was gone. Laurel’s, (her mother) world falls apart. Ten years down the line, she still had no hint on what happened to her daughter. She only had a few pieces of bones and a bag Ellie was carrying when she disappeared.

The bag contains exactly the same things she had carried the day she went missing. She ends up burying her daughter’s remains and living a broken life. Then, one day, she bumps into a charismatic and charming stranger who sweeps her off her feet. She starts going out with her and she enjoys it until she meets his daughter. She looked exactly like Ellie; and she is ten too; the number of years that had passed since Ellie went missing. The unanswered questions of Ellie’s disappearance that had been haunting her for the last ten years come flooding back. The feelings that unfolds next are dark and claustrophobic but also moving and heartfelt. Lisa Jewell packs a huge, emotional punch at the end of the novel that leaves a reader weak and winded.

I am attracted and interested in having the opportunity to meet the authors of these two books and share a moment with them. Maybe we would have a conversation or maybe just sit and say nothing. In my mind, I imagine that these authors are studious, interesting loners, and they have families that they treasure so much.

They are likely intelligent individuals, who are calm and have a great sense of humor. In my mind, they are also caring, do not judge people easily, love what they do, are simple and less interested in material things, drive relatively old vehicles that they treasure so much, and have that one particular friend that they trust so much. Besides my formulated hypothesis on the lives of the two authors, I like their way of writing. The protagonists in both novels live in disguise. Their characters assume fake character traits and live lives full of dark mystery. They chose what to let people know about their lives and everything else follows them to the graveyard. They are quite stunners, and I love it.

It was exactly August 7, 2017, two days before I left home for the land of the future. The day was half gone when I finished reading “ The Cause of Death ” by Patricia Cornwell. It was a typical day in Njarangeni Village and I did not have much to do at home besides nursing boredom. The Sun shone, dust brew everywhere, and villagers went about their village lives. When the afternoon came, I thought it was a good idea to go out and meet someone who I could perhaps talk to. Therefore, I cycled to Kibung’a (a local marketplace) but I was not fortunate enough to find someone who was willing to spend a couple of their precious minutes with me.

Besides, some people did not want to talk to me because I was going to study abroad, and since my family was [“well-connected”], maybe they thought I would brag about it. I did not care much about that because life had taught me to let people be people. As I cycled back I caught up with the 5’5 foot, 120 pounds, and now prettier Kathongi.

Her childhood beauty had faded into a quiet, kind, and true young woman, just as expected. She was walking by herself on one side of the road and she seemed lost into herself. Either way, she just looked amazing. I thought maybe this would be the best time to make my move and I was not ready to let my courage fail me. I will not write the precious pick-up line that I used but guess what; everything fell into place. I liked her mind despite the fact that she did not have much to do with books. It reflected maturity and a sense of responsibility. Before we bid each other adieu, she promised to meet me the following day to say an “official goodbye”.

I cycled home happy and whistling my favorite tune “ Mboya ye ” by Mbilia Bel. I felt relaxed and happy because for once in 10 years I was a man enough to approach her. I got home and everything seemed unusually out of place. First, I greeted my family and I was met by dead silence. Next, I parked my bike, grabbed a wooden seat and sat next to my father, as it is the custom.

“Why God? Why let this little thing die this young? Why has he lost his way when everything seems to fall in place? Murithi, my son, do you have any idea what your father and I have gone through to raise you. I cannot sit and watch you lose your way! I would rather beat you, because cane never kills a child (Muthanju utiuragaga mwaana), rather than watch you perish!” Mum said.

That did not scare me much because I knew I was way too old for parental corporal punishment, however, I was worried. I had no clue why she had uttered such words to me in a moment when we were supposed to be happy and saying prayers. “Kanyoni Muntu (Local term used to refer to the ‘unknown’ person who snitched on you) told us that you were seen with Kathongi. That girl is sick. She has Kamuti (used to refer to HIV Virus). She is about to die. Soon you will start seeing her hair fall off. No one in our family has ever contacted the disease and you will be an outcast. We are not ready to sit and watch you as you embarrass the family.” My father retorted. I knew neither of them was playing games but I never took it personally nor did I worry over anything as I am never after ‘that’ anyway.

Concisely, I felt embarrassed and headed to bed. I stayed awake for long hours. I was concerned because it did not make much sense to me how such a young woman would have contracted such a disease owing in mind that she was not well traveled and the last time I talked to her she was morally upright. And why her and not someone else? Who did that to her? Was she going to die soon? I remembered all my childhood fantasies, how I would see us growing old together and making cute babies, and now it was clearly evident that I would never live the moment with her.

I had a strong feeling that whatever my parents had said was a lie and that she was innocent. The morning came and the farewell ceremony was successful. Friends, neighbors, and relatives said a prayer for me and the ceremony ended at around six in the evening. That evening I had a single brief assignment, and after it was completed I hurried to the marketplace and from a chemist, I bought two determine HIV diagnostic kits, two prickers, normal saline, and two alcohol swabs.

When we met, I asked her whether she was interested in knowing our HIV status because you know, anything can happen. To my surprise, it turned out that she was HIV negative and that whatever I had heard the previous evening was nothing but a bunch of lies and false allegations. She proceeds to say, “I know someone might have told you bad things about me. Many villagers talk bad things about me and I rarely have friends to hang out with. I do not know who started all this but I have learned how to live my life. It hurt at the beginning, but I have learned how not to let people hurt me. Let me leave, it’s late and my mama might punish me for getting home late, but I am happy because for once I have found someone willing to find the truth.” She hugged me gently, and then she was gone.

The world is spherical and beautiful, and in it lives humans. Special animals that define and live in a “civilized” way, unlike the other animals in the wild. Some of these humans are selfless while others are overly narcissistic. Some tall and others short. Some beautiful and others are just okay.

Reading a book’s synopsis can give you a hint whether it is an interesting book or whether it is unappealing as per your favorable genres. However, you can never read the synopsis of a 1000 page novel and assume you have read the entire book. That is not how it works. You need to sit down and dedicate your time in reading it, from beginning to the end. In some cases, it takes two reads to understand a book.

This is the same logic when it comes to defining people. Some people will meet 34-year-old you and assume that they have watched you grow since you were in nappies through your teen years and into adulthood. They will write a review about you and rate you innocently. As if this is not enough, they will go ahead to explain to their friends, neighbors, and their families about the “you” they have known for the past “33” years. It takes an average minded person to evaluate people based on the things they have heard about them from their FRIENDS. The effect is tremendous as they are usually blocked from the good you. When you are talking to such people they do not even listen as they are too eager to reply to you in accordance to the ‘you’ they have made for themselves.

Additionally, the nature in which people learn about the wild and untrue things that people say about them varies and sometimes may have unpleasant results. Back in my days day, I witnessed people lose their dental formula or have their nasal bridge broken as a result of the words that came out of their mouth whereas their brains verily knew it was a lie and now other body parts were suffering for the things they never did anyway. I am not special, sometimes I would run my mouth to make myself look and feel better whereas deep within me I was a desperate piece of something. Be informed, anything that does not make you a better human makes your life lose a fraction of its taste. It may cost you nothing to devalue someone today, but it may come back ten folds tomorrow. Try and treat humans as per you, for this is my brief assignment for you today…..
