Book review: The 3 mistakes of my life – Chetan Bhagat

I just finished reading “The three mistakes of my life.” The only regret I have is why didn’t I read it earlier. When I started off reading it, I got mixed reactions; some said it’s good; some said it’s bad, so I decided to dig into it and find it for myself.

I was reluctant to continue a few pages through the book as I felt I would have a sad feeling at the end of this book. But I continued, and I was glad I did; it was so engrossing that I flipped page after page till the end. And yes, it has a happy ending :-). So the verdict is it’s the best among all the three that Chetan Bhagat has written.

The book has fiction (if you thought it’s about Chetan’s life, you are wrong:-)), sentiment, romance, social message, business, life, relations, religion, and of course, Cricket. The unique thing I found in this book is that Chetan has addressed a sensitive issue in the most sensible way possible. He has presented the facts, neutrally narrated a story.

It’s a story about three friends Omi, Govind, and Ish. The story is presented through Govind’s eyes, and it’s his three mistakes(???) of life presented along. Govind is a true Gujarati, interested in coming up on his own in life, through business.

Ish is an avid cricket player whose passion lies in playing, teaching, and watching cricket. Omi is a priest’s son who doesn’t have any ambition and moves along with his two friends. These simple people’s journey in life, how their lives get affected by the worst disasters in Gujarat’s history is portrayed in a simple yet efficient way by Chetan.

This book also teaches you how your dreams crash into pieces by unexpected events but how with support from people around you, you get back on track, focus, and rebuild your dreams.

The 3 mistakes of my life - Chetan Bhagat

This novel especially comes when people only want to come up with excuses to show or feel how different they are rather than see the common aspects and bring oneness, which can keep us together and achieve our common goal of growth, peace, and prosperity.

The language is simple; it connects well with India’s youth , the narration has improved; all in all, Chetan has improved in all the departments of writing a book. He has again proved that to be the best novelist, you don’t need fabulous vocabulary, or you don’t need awesome critics review; all you need is a thread to connect to people’s plain minds. Truly his best book ever.

Chetan Bhagat - Indian author, columnist, screenwriter, television personality and motivational speaker.

Finally, Chetan ends the book with a message like “ One night @ call center, ” which goes out to everyone in this country.

Life will have many setbacks. People close to you will hurt you. But you don’t break it off. You don’t hurt them more. You try to heal it. It is a lesson not only for you, but our country needs to learn. Chetan Bhagat

It does make you think about certain aspects, and the feeling lingers with you for a long time. That is what you would remember after many long years that you have read the book, and of course, guys would remember the Cricket and the girl :) (A typical character found in his last two novels).

So this book is for you if you are

  • Someone from Gujarat or Ahmedabad can relate a lot to the slang, attitude, and places described.
  • You like masala, drama with a tint of reality.
  • You are NOT an English language freak and are looking for a simple, engrossing, time-killing novel.
  • Last but not least, you are a fan of Chetan Bhagat :)

Given Govind's business acumen and Ishaan's love for cricket, the youngsters decide to open a shop that sells cricket goods. Omi's family helps them to get a rented place outside a temple, and soon enough the place is a hit with the locals. Chetan's biggest strength as a writer is his ability to create interesting settings and situations. And that's true of his latest book too. Moving on, Ishan takes a great liking to one of the local Muslim boys, Ali with a 'magical' ability to smash the ball for a six each time. Living with the regret of making it himself, Ishan decides to train the 12-year old. In between, there's a love story thrown in between Govind and Ishan's sister, only to have Omi spout cheesy lines like, 'You can't hit on your friend's sister, that's an unwritten rule' etc.Honesty, I wanted to like this book. It begins well, it’s setting is wonderfully created and importantly, it truly attempts to give the reader a slice of small-town India.Again this is for teenagers, not for a mature reader group, have read this when i was in my collage that time i liked it.

book review on 3 mistakes of my life

Chetan Bhagat’s books are, by and large — in what is commonly referred to in literary parlance — “potboilers.” He churns them out with regular frequency, and all them, as far as I know, have been made into (Hindi) movies. (He is an Indian writer writing in English.) The amazing thing about his books is that even though their literary merit is questionable — the writing is very pedestrian, as to be expected from potboilers — they have, by and large, been made into very successful movies. A couple of these movies have, in fact, been not just commercially successful, but excellent, with top-of-the-line directing, acting, screenplay, music, editing … everything that goes into making a great movie. The best example of this is the movie, 3 Idiots , which was based on Chetan Bhagat’s first book, Five Point Someone . Another example is the movie, Kai Po Che , based on his third book, The 3 Mistakes of My Life .

While both the book and the movie are no longer new (the book was published in 2008 and the movie was released in 2013), they returned to the spotlight recently, following the sudden death of the actor, Sushant Singh Rajput, who made his debut in the movie as one of the three leads and whose performance in the movie was widely acclaimed. I had seen the movie when it was released and loved it. I saw the movie again recently following the news of Rajput’s death — it was still so good — and then went back to read the book, The 3 Mistakes of My Life, on which it was based. I was mystified as to how such an average book had been made into such a terrific movie. Surely, they must have had to change the story substantially to make it so compelling?

It turned out that this was not the case. Granted, the ending has been changed completely, but the main plotlines, the key ingredients that make up the story, remained the same.

The 3 Mistakes of My Life tells the story of threechildhood friends in their early twenties who start a sports shop together. (While the store sells all kinds of sports equipment, its heart and soul is cricket.) The location is a suburb of the city of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat, which is critical to the plot. Of the three friends, Govind is the businessman, Ishaan is the cricket buff, and Omi does the odds and ends, in addition to being the key to getting the funds for the enterprise, courtesy his family connections in religious and political circles. The other main character in the story is a 12-year-old boy, Ali, a cricketing prodigy, in whom Ishaan sees the potential to go all the way up to the national Indian cricket team. The main tension in the story comes from the fact that Ali is Muslim, and Ishaan’s championing of him does not sit well with Omi’s extremist Hindu uncle to which the shop owes its existence.

While this storyline, in and of itself, is not particularly exceptional, what makes it so is that it ties together four key real-life events that are vital to the plot:

  • The devasting earthquake in Gujarat on January 26, 2001. Although the epicenter was in Bhuj, it caused a lot of destruction in cities such as Ahmedabad. In the book, it destroys the building that was going to be the mall which the friends were planning to relocate the sports shop to. They lose all the money they had made as a down payment on it. Govind, in particular, is distraught.
  • The second Test match in the Australian cricket team’s tour of India in March 2001. The Australian team, rated as the best in the world, had won 16 Tests in a row, including the first match in the series. India’s performance was so dismal in the first innings that they had to follow-on. A loss seemed imminent, with the best-case scenario being a draw. But in what was a historic turnaround, India actually went on to win the match by 171 runs, thanks to an unbroken partnership between the two Indian batsmen on the fourth day. The book referred to it as the batsmen making “eleven Australian cricketers dance to their tune” in public and for the whole day. Ishaan didn’t leave the TV that day “even to pee.” With that win, the fortune of the sports store turned around, and it started to recuperate the losses it had suffered following the earthquake.
  • The 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in the US in September 2001. Although this was half the world away, the anti-Islamic sentiments it stoked had reverberations even in India, fueling the simmering Hindi-Muslim tensions even further.
  • And finally, the Godhra train massacre in February 2002, which sparked off full-scale Hindu-Muslim riots in Gujarat. The train was returning from Ayodhya carrying Hindu “karsevaks” when a mob, allegedly comprising mostly Muslims, set fire to it, killing close to 60 people in Godhra in Gujarat. One of those killed was the son of Omi’s uncle, the Hindu fanatic, and in his despair and rage, he comes to kill Ali, who is being protected from the Hindu mob by Ishaan, with Govind and Omi by his side. (In the movie, Omi is on the side of the Hindu mob, but not in the book.)

I find it sheer genius that a writer can take these four different, but highly significant, real-life events that happened in the course of a year and weave them into such a compelling and completely believable story. Chetan Bhagat’s writing style may be mediocre, but in The 3 Mistakes of My Life , I think he has created a remarkable story. Let us give credit when credit is due.

I also read the book. I still find it is not up to "Five Point Someone". The entire Australian episode described in the book is a bad idea. The story line had some many loose ends like you mentioned. I wrote a post abt this book in my blog too. Chk it!

book review on 3 mistakes of my life

hi srinidhi, nice comprehensive analysis. you have got many of the glitches but in the process you have revealed too many parts of the plot. Regarding NDTV channel argument .. ur argument is partially right. As my memory runs the riots were shown in Star-News(the news segment was produced by NDTV). They weren't a independent channel at that time. Btw I am awaiting for ur post abt "assault weapon".

@Shande I have given an overview of the storyline. A blog post can never be a substitute for reading the book. These three mistakes weren't a serious mistakes as such so thought of destroying the hype and set the expectations clear for a reader. Please stand by for the "assault weapon" post-may be a week or two... Thanks for dropping by and commenting.

Hi Nidhi, Ya, the mistakes you pointed out were correct. But Chetan's novels are akin to Hindi movies, most of the times, no logic. These kind of mistakes can be found out in 5 Point Some one too. I felt book was not upto the hype created, especially the title, 3 mistakes. Some guys felt after reading the prologue in his site that it is not a fiction but his life story! Read my take on the book in my blog Raveesh

Yes Raveesh,,, Those mistakes are not really mistakes-almost everyone faces such issues... Reading ur post now...

Congrats as this post of urs is becoming famous on google search.. How did u do this?

@Nidhi Thanks... Well there's no exact formula to explain that... A bit of SEO (Search engine optimization), some links from popular blogs, a bit of luck and Google's faith in my blog...

Hi, me too read this book and got frustrated. LOL seeing your review on this book and the errors you had pointed out made me write my review on this book a little more interesting. Thanks for this review and pointing out those errors. Hope you read and enjoy my review on this book on my blog... ;)

HI Joel Reading your review... Good work... Thanks..

Amazing review and I agree to every single word in this review...

Thanks Akash.

i had read this book.....

Did you like the book?

And also Ish asks fred what his name was and was he playing... How can a man so much involved in cricket not know the name of a player in the team and whether he plays or not

that's also a good point.

Hii.. Wonderful review.. a heads up for me. Not to just get deep into any book i read... I was wondering if the story was true where is Ali. Who is Ali and if there exists a person with such super talent, has he started to fame? I completed this book just a few days back. So not knowing much of things... If you could help please...

book review on 3 mistakes of my life

There have been a zillion comic blogs on chetan bhagat... twitter had some funny stuff going on with him blocking ppl... neways i found this funny... http://www.chutneycase.com/2010/03/chetan-bhagat-plot-generator.html

can you tell me how many children or youngsters read books....the percentage is low but chetan have hit the score and even book haters read his books ..which means its good to a certain expect and a book is written to reach the audience and tell thm something ..the gujarat episode hit the audience as it really made people know about the gjaratriots....to my aspect it is wonderful attempt of chetan bhaghat

Sofi, That was one valid point. I agree.. Anu: Thanks for sharing Sirisha Its more of a factious character

i read the book n i think ali was even fake.

nice review.but i actually kinda enjoyed d book.i wonder if the book is true.it all seems so real.

I appriciate for all your books. One nigth @ call center was the best novel for me. can i know what was the girls name whom you met in train???? thanks a lot............

This was my first book by Chetan Bhagat and seriously speaking that was my first and last mistake for reading his books ever. I do like intelligent works like by Dan Brown, Robert Ludlum.

Thanks S. Anons: let us hope CB answers your questions

My most interesting lines from the book- Page 86-Vidya and Govind go to market to buy guidebooks for former’s exam “What is this?-Vidya said as she tried to lift the book with her left hand. She couldn’t. She used both her hands and finally took it six inches off the ground. ‘No seriously, what is this? An assault weapon?” -I will discuss this topic in little more detail in a separate post soon. i really wish dat u do give it as soon as possible coz i really need dis.....plz post d explanation or d discussion why u liked this topic asap..... thanks.....

even i want to ask d same question which has been asked by some chetan bhagat on june 07 2012...plz answer.....

I agree with your review nidhi, but in 1995 mobiles were introduced in india and it was actually during 2000-2002 Reliance had launched a scheme called Kar lo Duniya Muthi Mein .it actually provided a free mobile with the connection. So many middle-class ppl. actually bought it. i agree with all the other points u stated. but ur review was very helpful:) thanx kay

mistake- page 216-ali wore yellow tshirt and old pair of jeans. page 242-his thin body in white kurta pajama. thet didn't go to ali's home in between, then where did ali change his dress..:p

I had read the book more than 3 time. Every times when i read the book show a freshness.

Thanks Navin Harjot Singh: Nice observation Kay, thanks for your comment

Good book. One must read who loves our country. It gives the definite inside view of what is really going on in our country. We all know the symptoms, and sometimes get frustrated with no cure of it, but It talks about the Cure as well. It may not be inspirational or Fun like Bhagat's earlier ones, but definitely it is an Honest book which expresses the most of the Youth's view, who understands a bit. It may let down to those who doesn't want to face the reality or who wants to be in their world, but those are having a concern, and going through the what is going on in our country for past few years and see through the pathetic condition of the country, will definitely relate to it.

I just finised reading this book. my first ever indian literature I ever read. it's amazing, fun, and entertaining but I'm having problems with the translation, though it's just small grammar lapses. let's talk about ali and his cricket stuff. why all of a sudden ali wanted to play cricket? my understanding is he was forced and bribed. Is abba pushed ali to go on training to have some sort of free tuitions? though abba promised to pay if his budget permits... after the autralian trip, no one has a guts to tell ish to endorse ali to the indian team? though it was stated in the book that team india is not good in terms of training their mates. and so? is ish more good than the team india trainers? i guess, ish depends TOO MUCH on ali's talent. for govind. a business minded person that thinks how he will become rich somehow pursuaded to support ish's obssession towards ali's talent. a lot of money were wasted supporting ali. what was govind thinking? that someday ali will be famous in his field and earn tons of tons of money? i know they're friends but this is business, almost everything went to ali. but overall, it's a good book. i enjoyed reading it =)

the only chetan bhagat title that was a little sensible. glad to have started reading him from here and hence picked up his second book. the fictional god controlling everything was enteratining but simultaneously seemed so foolish

any one can tell me what is perceptual error, motivation,Emotional intelligence, Group dynamics, in 3 mistakes of my life

I have just read this book, I loved it so much that cannot resist myself to tell the world, that this is a great work by Chetan Bhagat Ji. When searched online I landed on your website. Just to say God Bless You.

now what can i say about chetan who is world renowned for his novels but this one is worth to be in your collection....not as great as 2 states yet it had touch of everything in it.....it's not too interesting yet not so boring as well....

Thanks Neha, Kavita, Rahul,Galib for your comments.

Thanks for Sharing this Shrinidhi. It is very good Point.

I am sure he will... thanks

Hy Nidhi, Your review was excellent.I have read every single one of Chetan Bhagat's books and have found most of them to be utter rubbish. His first book Five Point Someone, based on real life events have been a bit thought provoking but very boring. The second book One Night At The Call Centre was no better. It was an imaginary tale and I can confidently say One Night At The Call Centre is an imaginary story having ZERO logic. The Three Mistakes Of My Life better than his previous two books.Although it did not make sense most of the time, the story was capturing.I didn't find it boring like the other two.2 States was a story based on his life and was the only book that was interesting as well as logical. It showed some realities that happen in the Indian Marriage System even in highly educated families. The prejudices that take place in the Indian society is clearly depicted in the book.Revolution 2020 is a book which would appeal largely to people who are interested in politics. It shows the corrupt political system in India behind the veil of democracy.Although i like the book largely for the political content in it(as i m interested in politics)the book was not liked by most of my friends as it had something very illusional.Half Girlfriend was like One Night At The Call Centre and cannot be considered as a good read. The recent book One Indian Girl can be a handbook for feminists as it shows how the society showcases a girl while having no regard for a boy. This far I have felt that most of Chetan Bhagat's books are not enjoyable. Thank You

Thanks for your comments Sauda Mol. I am yet to read Rev 2020.

Book Review

The story of growing up that was turned into a fiction book titled “The 3 Mistakes of My Life” was written by Chetan Bhagat – an ace Indian writer. Released in 2008, this book delves into the journey of three youthful companions residing in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India: Govind, Ishaan and Omi. The process of their transformation from childhood into adults is shown when they grow up, beginning their personal journey, fighting for their dreams.

Loosely based on benchmarks of real-life crisis, including the Gujarat earthquake in 2001 and the Godhra train burning incident in 2002, which incited ethnic strife in the area. The three protagonists in Bhagat’s story go through some turbulent events and take necessary decisions in their life. Love and compatriotism interwoven with subplots such as deception and the competitive desire for success.

Endorsed by today’s young generation of India for tackling issues like faith, power, and demography especially the economic divide in India.

The author of this novel has done a good job telling the story and his ability to take up intricate issues in this novel was quite impressive to me in this novel. The novel has been applauded for presenting the new-age Indian society and their vulnerabilities as they try enter into the world, seek employment and establish themselves in society.

The machinist’s flaws, profoundness, and characteristics of the three main characters make readers empathize with them and get involved into the stories. The audience appreciates the author for the ability to address difficult topics, which are relevant to the perception of religion, communalism, and ambition, and the consideration of the young generation’s search for oneself and the hardships of living through those years.

The events are compressed and entertaining that engages the readiness of the reader for further adventures. To use real-life experiences in the writing of that novel also helps in increasing its credibility and applicability.

Another aspect in which the novel is particularly compelling is in how the protagonists’ ordeal as well as the trials and tribulations of growing up and defining oneself in the world are depicted, coupled with the complexity of life’s reality. All in all, a fascinating and educative novel, it explores multiple issues and concepts that are relevant in modern Indian context.

All together I would like to say that reading “The 3 Mistakes of My Life” was a splendid experience straight from the appealing characters to the gripping story line and Idea waves.

Thus, it can be stated that “The 3 Mistakes of My Life” by Chetan Bhagat is an interesting and philosophic book which offers the readers’ rather thought-provoking reflection on the staking and the maturity in the spectacle of life. The ambition of the main characters, their disdain towards communalism, and views on religion are some of the topics depicted in the novel and the revelations that growing up is not easy. It fulfills all criteria a good novel should have- its cast of characters are real, the story itself and the situation depicted is true and the events that surround it are all real. Furthermore, contribution toward understanding the contemporary social Indian reality is also the significant benefit of the novel, as several important themes and concepts are discussed throughout the book.

Book Review - The 3 Mistakes of My Life

book review on 3 mistakes of my life

India has undertaken an appreciable journey on the road of growth and development since the day of freedom, but Indian attitude or the attitude of the inhuman kind needs to be changed very seriously, as Indians are very easily driven by emotions and not by practical thoughts. This book covers their individual struggle to achieve goals, their strong attachment of love which wins them through all odds.

Introduction

Book’s Name- The Three Mistakes of my Life

Author- Chetan Bhagat

Genre- Motivation, friendship

Language- English

About the Author

Chetan Bhagat is an Indian author and columnist. He was also included in Time magazine's list of World's 100 Most Influential People in the year 2010. Bhagat originally graduated in mechanical engineering at IIT Delhi and completed an MBA at IIM Ahmedabad. Initially, he started his career as an investment banker but left it after a few years in order to pursue his passion for writing.

‘Five Point Someone’, his first novel, was published in 2004. He has written nine novels and three non-fiction books till date. His novels have always been listed as bestsellers since the beginning.

About the Book

‘The 3 mistakes of my Life’ is the third bestseller novel by Chetan Bhagat. It was published in May 2008 and gathered an initial print-run of 4,20,000. The story follows the life of three friends of Ahmedabad.

The main story line is that in late-2000 in Ahmedabad, a young boy Govind dreams of having a business. To accommodate his friends Ish and Omi’s passion, eventually they open a cricket shop. Govind wants to make money and so, always thinks big. Ish’s life is all about to nurture Ali, who is a batsman with a rare gift. Omi among them, is completely different. He knows his limited capabilities and he just wants to be around his friends.

But, nothing comes easy in a turbulent rush city. To realize their life goals, the three of them will have to face it all– religious politics, earthquakes, riots, unacceptable love  and above all,  their own mistakes in existence. The book covers their struggles of how they make it or even not.

It is a story of a young Indian generation in this modern world who counters unpredictable love, thwarted ambitions, absence of family affection, pressure of a patriarchal set up and the work environment around a universalized office.

It also forces readers to question if an individual’s dreams could overcome the nightmares which are offered by real life and also, could we succeed even despite a few mistakes in the process. The book is based on real events, real circumstances and stories. While we all find Bhagat’s books as a common fun romance based, this book comes out as a dark, yet witty tale of modern India with a lot of enlightening issues and learning aspects.

Translations of the Book

This English national bestseller has been published in the following languages:

Gujarati - A leading Gujarati book publisher, M.B.D., based in Ahmedabad & Mumbai.

Tamil - Published by Diamond Pocket Books.

French - Released by Cherche Midi publisher in March 2010 as Les 3 erreurs de ma vie.

Sinhala - By Dileepa Jayakodi in 2011 as Thun Thakatheerukan Karapu Kenek Man.

The book has also been adapted into a Bollywood movie, Kai Po Che, and was directed by Abhishek Kapoor. The movie starred Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh & Rajkumar Rao. It was released in February 2013. Since the film and book were set in Gujarati, hence justifying its title, Kai Po Che.

Famous Quotes From the Book

“I think the brain has a special box where it keeps crappy memories. It stays shut, but every time a new entry has to be added, it opens and you can look at what is inside.”

“And tell me, who will be more successful in life? The kid who knows all the chemical formulae or the one who knows teamwork, passion, discipline and focus?”

“God gives talent so that the ordinary person can become extraordinary. Talent is the only way the poor can become rich. Otherwise, in this world the rich would remain rich and the poor would remain poor. This unfair talent actually creates a balance, helps to make the world fair,”

The Bottom Line

Bhagat believes very firmly that if the government really gets its act together on transportation the young workforce will get better quality jobs that are more satisfying and will make India move ahead.

HAVE YOU BEEN SCAMMED OF YOUR COINS AND WANTS TO GET IT RECOVERED BACK??? I invested a total of$95,000.00USD worth of Bitcoin with an online company who does trading and was guaranteed a payout of 25% a week. They ended up shutting down their company website but their website was still running. So I could still see my dashboard at that time and instead of paying weekly they ended up compounding my money. It ended up compounding to$179, 000USD so I requested for a withdrawal which was declined before they shutdown their website, I complained to my colleague at work who directed me about this recovery expert, Mr. Morris Ray, that helped him, I contacted him immediately, what surprised me most, was that I recovered my money that same week. You can contact him on his email at MorrisGray830 @ Gmail . com and on WhatsApp: + 1 (607) 698-0239 and he will assist you on the steps to recover your invested funds. Just trying to help those who where scammed just the way I was too.

In Conversation with Chetan Bhagat

It is not everyday you sit in front of your computer on a Saturday morning and get an email like this:

From: Ahd_businessman

Sent: 12/28/2005 11.40 p.m.

Subject: A final note

Dear Chetan,

This email is a combined suicide note and a confession letter. I have let people down and have no reason to live. You don’t know me. I’m an ordinary boy in Ahmedabad who read your books. And somehow I felt I could write to you after that. I can’t really tell anyone what I am doing to myself – which is taking a sleeping pill every time I end a sentence – so I thought I would tell you.

I kept my coffee cup down and counted. Five full stops already.

Contemporary Fiction (Books),Classic Fiction (Books)

I made three mistakes; I don’t want to go into details.

My suicide is not a sentimental decision. As many around me know, I am a good businessman because I have little emotion. This is no knee-jerk reaction. I waited over three years, watched Ish’s silent face every day. But after he refused my offer yesterday. I had no choice left.

I have no regrets either. Maybe I’d have wanted to talk to Vidya once more – but that doesn’t seem like such a good idea right now.

Sorry to bother you with this. But I felt like I had to tell someone. You have ways to improve as an author but you do write decent books. Have a nice weekend.

Businessman

Contemporary Fiction (Books),Classic Fiction (Books)

17, 18, 19. Somewhere, in Ahmedabad a young ‘ordinary’ boy had popped nineteen sleeping pills while typing out a mail to me. Yet, he expected me to have a nice weekend. The coffee refused to go down my throat. I broke into a cold sweat.

‘One, you wake up late. Two, you plant yourself in front of the computer first thing in the morning. Are you even aware that you have a family?’ Anusha said. In case it isn’t obvious enough from the authoritative tone, Anusha is my wife.

I had promised to go furniture shopping with her – a promise that was made ten weeks ago.

She took my coffee mug away and jiggled the back of my chair.

‘We need dining chairs. Hey, you look worried?’ she said.

I pointed to the monitor.

‘Businessman?’ she said as she finished reading the email. She looked pretty shaken up too.

‘And it is from Ahmedabad,’ I said, ‘that is all we know.’

‘You sure this is real?’ she said, a quiver in her voice.

‘This is not spam,’ I said. ‘It is addressed to me.’

My wife pulled a stool to sit down. I guess we really did need some extra chairs.

i did not like the book at all...i think the whole book is commercial, not just the last part...it lacks in research of any kind...om's character is not developed at all, so one feels no sorrow when he dies...it is also rather obvious that bhagat does not watch cricket

The story iz complicated fr those people who hv never been in habit of reading such beautiful emotional buks.............i liked d story very very much............even waiting fr d movie based on it..........kai po che!!!!!!!!!!

book review on 3 mistakes of my life

Even kai po che is the same. but the one who has read the book and remembers the story, then only he'll understand the movie, because, the movie is made in a "shortcut" way. The screen adaptation is done cleverly. Story runs fast and no specific background for a particular character or situation. and about the last part, i haven't read the book fully (only reached half the pages) but yeah the one youngster ISHAAN, who dies in the end, its very bad. and sad too ! that should have been ignored. Overall book is good.! A worth reading !

Hmmm When one wonders why such cliches in Hindi movies sells, books in similar lines, to script more movies, surely is bound to hit big !!! After all they unfortunately cater the spicy tastes of a good majority for certain . . Its just the ones with a sour tongue that have to be contend with the least in the contents . . But that said, Kai Po Che certainly is a lil relief from the usual !@#$%^&* that hits the screens week in week out . . With the Oscars over, trend tends to peep into the English territory only to wonder what hit them i guess, such sweet spot in taste isn't really that well defined in this majority . . But can't help wonder the difference in class and standard of the same, which surely will be understood by those who have long been tasting such great servings !!! THat brings such few ones to ponder if ever Hindi movies will grow up, especially when even the ones they send for the Oscar entry itself describes shamelessness !!!! Not to mention the unfair treatment to many a brilliant regional movie in Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam which could at least stand in the list of the class of foreign ones . . Agree with your review on the book, though only browsed through it :P Yes, I'm not that much of a fiction reader nowadays too :) Anyways Thanks . .

book review on 3 mistakes of my life

The review is very apt. I haven't read the book but just saw the movie. It just get unnecessarily heady towards the end. My sole question is - what are the THREE MISTAKES if to be defined clearly?

1. Buying the shop in the mall which they knew they could not afford. 2. Sleeping with Vidya 3. The third one wasn't shown in the movie. Its related to Ali.. Read the book for that one :P

I loved to read famous authors books and Chetan Bhagat is my favorite one..I like this book a lot!!

I like the book.

It love this book.

i like the book. But i too agree with your review. it's quiet lagging in middle.

Hey , i read the book , its fab, The only unlikely thing is that i just read till 2 mistakes, Pls , can someone pls tell me about the third mistake and ending? I gave the book back to my friend from whom i borrowed.....

book review on 3 mistakes of my life

TO PEOPLE WHO SAID THAT THIS BOOK, "THREE MISTAKES OF MY LIFE" IS DISAPPOINTING, Dearies it seems that you people are rather too practical with giving no way for emotions or your life is heading towards no where or you far too advanced for CB's writing maybe!!(God knows what).... It turns out that this novel has impressed me .... coz I've seen it deeper than outer line given. Omi's death would only touch if you had bonding friends in reality and if you would have empathised him. well, Ishaan is like WOW!!(EXCEPT in not accepting Govind and Vidya) The patriotic blast in his blood and passionate about cricket!! For people should learn from him what patriotism and passion of life is!! the protaganist seems not to stay in my mind same goes with Vidhya and the religious freaks living in there.. But ALI , hats off to him.. the young, innocent, talented kid who scores the love of my heart far more than anything in this book!

Ur book"THE 3 MISTAKES OF MY LIFE" is ausum....i loved it...

book review on 3 mistakes of my life

Its amazing, but describing the vidhya's charecter is not good .ending is awesome

You should have a balanced sense of emotion & practicality when you are doing criticis of novels or any kind of arts. But really what you are doing here? You are so desperate to compare the novel with bolly movies that you find several passionate lines cheesy & even saying that saving a boy's life is not meaningful to you. What are you made of dear? Even the beasts have minimum of hearts. It was not only for his gift, the gift words were for excuses to save him, but they mentioned quite a few times that they care, especially Ishan, Govind too at the end. Besides this, if anyone is partriotic that is drama to you, protocol line about best friend's sister is cheesy for you, seriously where are you from? Even if you are from some high societies, don't you know minimum of small town things? And here you are with your critics, with all these horrible senses? And not only these books characters, but many did suffer directly from both the earthquake & riots in Gujarat, so stop giving such dumb peculiar conclusions by saying that it's not realistic. Not that I'm saying this is the best book, but enough likable, there are realities ( not for half-sensed or half-knowledged ones) & passions which is not present in everyone who never think out of the box, as a result they find it unrealistic, for example, like going to Australia. One can surely find faults while doing critics, but here every negative point stated is so bizarre. The foolest criticism I have ever read, & shocked to see several foxes as well in the comment section(one started wooouuuu, then the rest are joining too - wooouuuu wouuuuuu), for people with such kind of mindsets India is still lagging so much behind in several professional aspects.

It was a solid book, way better than the movie adaptation. I wish there was a big more character development with the main character, but besides by that the book was very good from the plot to the small details in the characters personalities. It isn't perfect but i don't think any book is perfect. Its basically the term "popcorn movie", but for a book.

The Three Mistakes of My Life Novel Review 2023

The book begins with a passionate bend, where Bhagat is abusing messages sent by some youthful Govind, who has taken rest pills for unknown reasons and is in contact with Bhagat while waiting to die. The novel revolves around three significant relationships that Govind has had in his life; similarly, he is the main character.

Govind dreams of turning into a compelling specialist, while his accomplice Ishaan respects cricket and, with the assistance of Omi and his pastor gatekeepers, designs his initial wander—a games shop in a rented space outside the sanctum sanctorum.

Typically revolving around these three young associates, the novel contains nearly everything related to adolescents in India; the book addresses a wide range of feelings and essential thoughts in India, extending from sentimental narrating to check and antipathy for death, suicide, and suicide. Concentrating on People’s Youth Festivals, A Blend of My Lives is a novel; for example, his past work is packed with an enthusiastic craving for new experiences that keeps a piece of news standing out of the book until the end.

The 3 Mistakes of My Life novel centers on three best friends and religious crises in India; this clash was between the Hindus and the Muslims, and there’s a lesson to draw from it. Christians are Muslims in Nigeria. Did I hit a card? Okay, let’s get right out to the article.

The first character is Ishan, whose room was cut short because he lived in a country with little value for sports. He got into the army, lied that he had an ailing parent, came back, and never went back.

So he’s a military dropout for me; his father is a priest, and he has lived in the temple all his life. Some people say he was born stupid, and other people say that he became stupid when a cricket ball hit him when he was in the classics, but he doesn’t talk much about his future.

Govind is a math guru whose father abandoned him and his mother as a child. His mother became a shambles after she finally decided to start a business after he noticed they were going broke, and all her jewelry was sold to other adults. He went to college to study engineering but didn’t like it, so he now tells people to study math to support his family.

Ali is a little Muslim boy who is gifted in cricket and marble. Having developed a love and sense of business, he decided to involve his two best friends, who became partners. They started a cricket shop. Umi was supposed to ask his uncle to give them a shop in the temple. Ish was supposed to give cricket tutors to two children who wanted it because it was like a loved spot in India.

So it was God who was telling the story. His first mistake was when he and his partners or friends decided to take a loan from Omi’s uncle and his mom to buy a bigger shop at the mall. He was always irritated whenever Umi’s uncle came to the shop and would talk about religious stuff because he was an agnostic; he was in the middle.

Because he’s someone who always knows, who always does research, i.e., buying a house with a sand foundation is something he should have known about or researched, so that was his second mistake, along with falling in love and having a sexual relationship with Ishi’s sister, who was also one of his students.

He was too strong because there is an unspoken rule among the guys that they don’t hit on their friend’s sister, and he’s a very logical person; he’s not someone who has on sentiment, so that was his second mistake. Mis’s uncle lost his son when Muslims decided to burn a train that had Hindu passengers on it and began to retaliate by killing Ali, who also issued students at the climax of events when miss’s uncle lifted his knife to stab Ali, they

So, guys, the book mentioned something about the chimpanzees, the chimps, or the MailChimp who fight in this empire. They will fight each other, for women, for food, for everything, and at the end of the day, they will go through the same ritual of kissing each other on the leaves. This ritual was done to ensure that everything at the end of the day was reserved, which was a reconciliatory mechanism.

book review on 3 mistakes of my life

  1. Book review: The 3 mistakes of my life

So the verdict is it's the best among all the three that Chetan Bhagat has written. The book has fiction (if you thought it's about Chetan's life, you are wrong:-)), sentiment, romance, social message, business, life, relations, religion, and of course, Cricket. The unique thing I found in this book is that Chetan has addressed a ...

  5. Saranya Kavitha's review of The 3 Mistakes of My Life

The title The 3 mistakes of my life is apt to the novel. The 3 mistakes are clearly stated and before starting the novel we can get the clue that it is about business (Govind), cricket (Ishaan) and religion (Omi). After two bestselling books this is his next hit. It has its own value to go through the book.

Chetan Bhagat again feels compelled to provide a framing device for The Three Mistakes of my Life: the mistakes are not his but rather those of Govind Patel.A Prologue describes how Bhagat came to the story, with a suicidal Govind having sent him an e-mail and Bhagat rushing to Ahmedabad (from Singapore !) to hear the young man's story.
